"The Skeleton Key" is probably one of the most underrated horror movies ever. And it had one of the best twists of the last decade!

So happy to see 'A Dark Song' catch some love.
I loved the ending. I think it caught me at a vulnerable moment - but that redemption moment made me cry.
'The Ritual' really surprised me. It was frightening and disturbing, and that end scene resonated. I, too, after being put through hell's pasta shredder, would have thrown a primal scream back at that creature. 100%!
Some movies on this list I haven't seen - and so the "Super-gotta-see" movie list has grown. Dark ritual movies are a sub-genre I absolutely love.
Thank you for your great videos!

I'm usually very much "to each their own," but tbh it kinda annoys me that a lot of horror fans seem to dislike the ending of A Dark Song.
Some horror fans just aren't satisfied unless the ending is really brutal / dark. And I'm sure some others, drawn to a film about the occult, hated how "christian" the ending might have felt...
But guess what, guys? That's REAL Western occultism! lol
All that shit is based on judeo-christian religion, and virtually none of it worships the dark side. And most of it IS focused on self improvement and OVERCOMING darkness. Just one of the many things that film got right.
And I agree, I thought that ending was really powerful, and elevated the film above what it might have been otherwise.
I've studied the occult for decades, and IMHO it's one of the best, and most accurate horror films portraying Western occultism.
Even though they technically don't portray the ritual *entirely* correctly, and there's a number of things they add or make up... lol
But they got a lot of it right, and on a psychological and spiritual level, it's pretty solid.
      Great movie!

A Dark Song is a gem I recommend to ANYONE that mentions the term horror in my proximity 😂 I was absolutely surprised by how much I liked this movie. My only issue with the ending was that it was the only scene where you felt the small budget limitations, but I got passed it because the message was received and felt. Normally I prefer much more bleak endings but the character development throughout was enough for me to accept this as the best way to finish this particular film.
Thanks for the list!!! Another fun video...

Great list. I vaguely remember seeing The Dark Secret of Harvest Home on TV back in the late 1970's when I was a young child. I have been trying to remember the name of the movie for years now but could only recall that Bette Davis was in it and the sex ritual near the end. Thank you for giving me the title of the movie. Now I can stop racking my brain over that and now start trying to find it available to view, hopefully in it's full uncut version. As soon as you mentioned it in the video I went to Amazon to look for it but it seems it's only had a VHS and maybe a DVD release outside of the US and was edited down from it's original 5 hour version.

And I was so glad to see many of these make the list, especially "Ready or Not" as that's just a super-fun movie, IMO. No matter how many times I see it, it's still just a really good time each time! Samara Weaving is just so terrific in that film.

NICE! Some recs I didn't know are now on my list, and I'm THRILLED to see the love for Serpent and the Rainbow (one of my all-time faves, and Craven's best) and for Lords of Salem. I'm an RZ outlier in that I think TDR, H2, and TLoS are his best films (Lords being my favorite of them)...with H2 and Lords, he was honing his craft and really coming into his own, but his core fans rejected those movies and since then he's retreated back to formula instead of moving forward. His last two are stale and unexciting, such a shame if he's lost his confidence to grow.

I love The Skeleton key, it was really an enjoyable one for me... nice and moody! And I've loved movies about voodoo since The Serpent and the Rainbow. I saw that one in the theater many moons ago, lol. The Ritual was excellent, such a cool concept and ending, DAMN! I've only ever seen the remake of Suspiria but I love it... I am a huge fan of Tilda! Midsommar was cool, I didn't know what to expect but it got me, just like Hereditary (and that one FREAKED me out!). Great list, I will be checking all of these gems I haven't watched yet out... I appreciate your opinions!

Really enjoyed A Dark Song (from an earlier recco video of yours). Glad of the reminder of Pyewacket, need to watch that one! Do you think Cabin in the Woods fits the bill for this list? 🤔🤔

ALL THE COLORS OF THE DARK! 1972 Italian horror I recently stumbled across on Amazon Prime. The camera work is so neat and Edwige Fenech put on quite a performance. I now want to see all of her movies lol

Emma I said Borderland at the same moment you did. An underrated film to be sure. Provocative list. I haven't seen the Harvest Home series but I have read the book, which is a classic. Definitely connections with Midsommar. And they both reminded me a very very curious film called Population 436, which is also a daytime country horror film. But it's more of a curse film.
(Which would be a good subject for recommendations in the future. I find Curse films to be quite haunting, especially as they are often so mysterious. There is a really strange one from the 50's called The Maze, and with curse films you could get in both Cat People and I walked with a Zombie.)
Also I think Lords of Salem is actually Rob Zombie's masterpiece. Minority view, but I'm sticking with it. Glad to see it here.
    Thanks again Emma.
PS I think Samara Weaving and Margot Robbie should play sisters in a film someday.

OoooOoo HooDoo? I just saw that new movie Spell, that was really good. The idea of a HooDoo Doll is pretty scary.
I was surprised to find out it was an all Black cast

I would add 'Blood on Satan's Claw' to the list. Also, history nerd here, Pye Wackett was the name of the imp not the witch herself. Anyone familiar with the image knows that she had some whacky names for her familiars. 😂 Great list btw, nice to see some gems being highlighted and talked about more. 😊

Skeleton Key is one of my favorite Horror Movies. I have the BluRay Disk and a digital version in my VUDV library. I have rewatched it many times and always enjoy it. I think that it’s Kate Hudson’s best performance and the whole cast is great. The twist ending also surprised me.
