A24 is such a gem of a studio, giving opportunities to rookie directors who have real talent. They have a real great identity as a company and are just great for film.
It's one of the last studios that gives a chance to "artsy" films. Pretty soon the entire scene will be owned and operated by Disney and the era for unknown directors making their passion artsy pieces will be over. Disney even talked about opening up their own theater chain which would put smaller privately owned theaters who still play the smaller movies out of business. It's truly tragic, It's been a huge issue for a few years now.
@Ciguaphyria X plus A24 doesn't make most of their movies. They're primarily just the U.S. distributor. Most of the movies in their catalogue they had zero to do with the production (still love their catalogue tho).
I'm glad there are people who like A24. But for me, it's a big keep away sign. I'd rather watch artless trash like Maniac Cop than The Lighthouse. Keep horror trashy and low budget and hungry. A24 is like adding symphonic instrumentation and production value to raw black metal albums.
Herriditary has a weird connection with me. The first time I finally got decided to watch it about 20 minutes in I got the call my grandma had passed away tragically. I didn’t pick the movie up again for months. Even now when I watch it it still brings up hard memories. It’s a real good Movie though!
I never realized how much I love A24 movies until seeing this video. I love almost all of these movies! Oddly, I haven't seen or even heard of The Killing of a Sacred Deer! I'll be checking that one out for sure.
That was the same for me as well I stumbled across the trailer while doing research on the director. It wasn’t much promotion for it and the trailer doesn’t give anything away either.
I'd be one of those friends who would have said "what a fun ride- any more recommendations?" ... I mean srsly, even "death becomes her" had more body-horror to offer. at least in variety
Man, that sucks. My friend showed me Tusk and not even a month later, I got a walrus tattoo (despite being extremely disturbed and moderately depressed for the following 48 hours of seeing it)
this video makes me realize I’m either ALL IN with an A24 movie or completely all out lol movies like Tusk and Green Room were just so amazing but I couldn’t stand movies like Climax and The Lighthouse. definition of hit or miss for me, but I loved hearing your list!
Most definitely! A24 has made a few bombs, but inversely, a few that are worth a re-watch over and over again! Obviously, "Hereditary", which definitely deserves be high up because it was REALLY successful on a budget of $10 million with returning just over 8× at $80.2 million and pretty much made Toni Collette a scream queen!
Totally agree. A24 supports so many creative minds and I’m here for it, we get to see some stories play out that we otherwise might not. Sometimes tho, it feels like in an attempt to find a story that’s “unique” and “different”, like most of their films, they find some people that cross the line into “wtf actually is this” territory.
Your Climax review was kind of disappointing because the only negative thing you had to say about it was that it made you uncomfortable, so it's almost like you would have enjoyed it had it not been so intense, whatever though. Still appreciate your channel
A24 just blows every other movie company out of the water, in my opinion. They just completely align with what I love in film. Thank you for this video!
It's crazy that A24 have made at least 4 of the best films of the decade! Of the ones I've seen this is my list! 1: Hereditary 2: Midsommar 3: The Blackcoat's Daughter 4: The Witch 5: The Lighthouse 6: Green Room 7: The Hole in the Ground 8: The Killing of a Sacred Deer 9: High Life 10: Under the Skin 11: Life After Beth
It Comes at Night is honestly my favorite horror film of all time. The amount of tension Shults manages to build throughout is outstanding. I also think it has one of the best / bleakest endings out of any horror film. He managed to create an ending that was both surprising and completely inevitable. I love that Shults refuses to reveal exactly what “It” is, instead implying that humans are the real monsters.
Your channel has helped me find so many hidden gems that I've never seen before. Thank you so much! Top 5: Green room, The killing of a sacred dear, Lighthouse, Midsommar, and one of my all time favorite movies Hereditary.
my ranking, i haven't seen much tho: midsommar 5/5 the lighthouse 5/5 hereditary 5/5 the witch 5/5 the blackcoat's daughter 3.5/5 it comes at night 2/5
merjem i agree with hereditary (favorite move of all time), lighthouse and the witch. but midsommar kinda dragged on for me, it’s really beautifully shot but the story kinda felt slow moving and the beginning with the parents i felt like it was unnecessary, they could’ve done more with it
BHENgames the intro with the parents and sister was so tragically horrifying that it actually scared me of how abrupt and expertly shot it was. However the rest of the movie after that felt like something completely different and I didn’t understand some of the intricacies of it, which distracted me from the style of horror. Certain things dragged on for too long with no purpose (I’m mostly pointing out that fucking sex ritual). But other than that it’s a beautiful piece of cinema and I would understand that the more you watch it, the more you appreciate it. I still need to watch a lot of A24 movies, but so far, The Lighthouse, Hereditary, and Uncut Gems are my favourites.
I feel as though Killing of a Sacred Deer is so underrated, such an incredible film!!!! Same as Climax, both these movies really shook me to the core. Shoutout to A24 for saving horror.
You gained a subscriber in me the moment you placed Tusk in your top 5. I watched the movie with my wife and a friend and they both thought it was stupid - I, on the other hand, actually thoroughly enjoyed it haha. Good to know I wasn't the only one!
I agree. I feel like cosmic horror has so much to offer creativity-wise. And the scenes where she lured the victims into her realm along with the sounds and visuals prove this; so haunting and unique!
Totally thought Hereditary would be number one. I still haven't seen The Killing of a Sacred Dear, but now I absolutely have to. I do enjoy me some Yorgos Lanthimos.
*spoilers* I think It Comes at Night is underrated. The advertising completely misled people, for sure, and that's unfortunate. But taken less as a direct horror film, and more as an exploration of what fear does to the mind in times of crisis, I think it's pretty great. You witness in real time the transformation of people as they start as rivals, become family, and then end up as enemies, all because of a virus, something that (like fear) can't be seen but has the power to destroy. I also appreciate that it asks a pretty simple though profound question. Is death the worst fate possible? Or is it worse to lose ones humanity and live with the consequences? I've always enjoyed the film. Though, granted, I may be seeing it in a different light at the moment due to what is happening in the world at large. Great list, well spoken. I definitely need to see High Life.
I watched it in the theater when it came out. I loved the slow moodiness of it as opposed to waiting for It to come at night. It's rich in subtext. I think the title does a disservice to it in equal to the marketing. Rewatching during the pandemic is a good move too! Haha
I am so happy this is a list that exists. There were a few in here I hadn't heard of/didn't know were A24 so I'm definitely adding some of these to my "to watch" list!
Arthouse horror is on a tear right now. Love A24 !!! There are quite a few I have not seen yet.... Got some work to do ...Need to add to my 31 days of horror list. Thanks Emma for compiling an A24 horror film list. The Lighthouse (2019) My # 3 A24 horror The Hole in the Ground (2019) Not seen Midsommar (2019) My # 4 A24 horror Climax (2018) Not seen Hereditary (2018) My # 2 A24 horror In Fabric (2018) not seen High Life (2018) not seen It Comes at Night (2017) not seen The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017) not seen The Monster (2016) Not seen The Witch (2015) My # 5 A24 horror The Blackcoat's Daughter (2015) My # 1 A24 horror Green Room (2015) Not seen Life After Beth (2014) Not seen Tusk (2014) Not seen Under the Skin (2013) My # 6 A24 horror
Although I became a staunch supporter of A24 after being blown away by Ex Machina in 2015 and then selecting The Witch as #1 overall for 2016, it is the lower profile releases like Climax and In Fabric that are constant reminders of the bold and pioneering spirit of this studio.
So many of my favorite horror movies are A24 films! Climax, The lighthouse, The Witch, Hereditary, Midsommar, The Killing Of A Sacred Deer, and the ever unpopular Tusk lol. But honestly some of the best recent horror movies IMO. Good video 💜
Brilliant list Emma, I loved 'The killing of a sacred deer', loved the mythology angle. A24 have helped to create absolute gems of film's. You do a fabulous job. Well done from Ireland!!. 👌
I just saw the killing of a sacred deer a few days ago and honestly its one of THE best movies ive ever seen. Its like a car crash that you dont really want to see but cant stop watching. Brilliant. Midsommar is also one of the best horror movies out there, gotta love A24
I will never forget the first time I watched Midsommar. I just cried and cried when the credits rolled. It’s been years and I still can’t quite figure out why.
I haven't seen all of them, but here's the rank list of all the ones I have watched: Midsommar (2019) The Witch (2015) Under the Skin (2013) Hereditary (2018) The Lighthouse (2019) In Fabric (2018)
I just watched the killing of a sacred deer and I honestly didn't find it disturbing at all. But thanks for notifying me about that climax movie! I love movies that involve LSD lmao I'll be sure to check that one out! Great video btw.
don't ever apologise for your opinions!! one thing i love about you Emma is how passionate you get about movies, even if they're "unpopular" it's still so uplifting seeing you get excited over something cheesy 💗
“I could have put it in the back to please you all, but I love Tusk so much”. Can I use your line for myself whenever I have a hot take on a list that I know won’t please people? Because I loved it! Also, I do respect your opinion. My favorite A24 horror is The VVitch.
For me: Midsommar, Hereditay, The Witch, The Blackcoat´s Daughter, (Under the Silver Lake*), The Lighthouse, In Fabric, (Ex Machina*), The Killing of a Sacred Deer, The Monster, The Hole in the Ground, Climax, It comes at Night, Green Room, Under the Skin...*= if one might call them Horror(esque) ;-) Great idea, Emma :-) Blumhouse next?
Of the 8 that I’ve seen, here is my ranking. 1. Hereditary- a family tragedy turned horror. Wow. Love this film. Has some genuinely terrifying scenes. 2. The Lighthouse- acting is wonderful, so metaphorical, a wonderful display of a descent into madness 3. The Witch- beautiful film, intense, creepy and very well made. 4. Tusk- funny, strange, disturbing, dumb, emotional, and disgusting makes this a fun watch 5. Green Room- very intense with some great performances, good gore as well 6. Midsommar- over the top weird at times, drawn out, but has some memorable scenes, incredible acting 7. The Killing of a sacred deer- acting felt off, simply wasn’t entertaining enough, but disturbing 8. The Hole in the Ground- first two thirds were great, last third was disappointing, good performances
Great idea for a video. While we're waiting for more films, maybe you could do other similar company driven lists (Blumhouse?). Thanks Emma. You made me think about The Blackcoat's Daughter...
Awesome list - I'm a little embarrassed to admit that, despite being a movie nerd and a horror fan, I really didn't know much at all about the A24 movies. You've given me some homework, so thank you! :D
These covid-19 lockdowns are driving us all to a "The Lighthouse" situation lol My dad is this close to ask me if I like his cooking. Thanks a lot for this list, great content as always ✌🏼
I did NOT realize Toni Colette is Australian! I have killing of a sacred deer on my Prime list for years now but have yet to watch it. Of the ones I’ve seen ...The Lighthouse, Green Room, Climax (I feel my blood pressure rising and anxiety increasing just thinking about that movie), MidSommar, the VVitch and Hereditary as my number 1...
*_Finally,_* someone else who enjoyed _Tusk_ as much as i did. I guess a lot of people just sort of _"grew out"_ of Kevin Smith's sense of humor, & he's got such a _skewed_ (pun intended) perception of reality that it just feels right, & translates very well to horror, imo. Whenever i mention liking _Tusk,_ however, i almost *always* get a confused look from others, almost as if liking it automatically means there's something wrong w/me... They're mostly right in sensing that something's wrong w/me, but i don't think this film necessarily warrants that kind of reaction.
Thank you for this list, A24 is amazing, and there are a few films I have not yet seen or heard of so I hope to see them soon. Your video was terrific, with great enthusiasm. and heart. You can really see and hear your excitement about these movies, keep up the good work.
surprised by your number 1 pick! though I agree it is a wonderful film. here's what my list would be, ranked from worst to best, minus hole in the ground, in fabric, the monster and life after Beth bc I haven't seen those ones :< 12. Climax 11. Tusk 10. High Life 9. Hereditary (I rlly want to give it a second try though bc everyone seem to rlly love it but I didn't really on my first viewing!) 8. Under the Skin 7. It Comes at Night 6. The Blackcoat's Daughter (weirdly enough this is the scariest film for me out of this whole list lol. it's so goddamn creepy) 5. The Witch 4. The Killling of a Sacred Deer 3. The Lighthouse 2. Green Room (I'm not sure why but boy do I love this one) 1. Midsommar. It took me a while to actually watch it since I didn't like Hereditary but I was completely floored by this film. hands down one of the best horror of all time for me!!!
Ooh you definitely need to rewatch Hereditary. I really didn't get the hype on first watch, but then I rewatched it when my partner wanted to see it and it's now one of my favorites; I feel like I caught so many more details the second time around which made it much more enjoyable, since the first time I was busy just trying to keep the plot straight in my head.
Great job as always. I’ve mostly been a lurker over the years, but just wanted to say that your content just keeps getting better and better! I need the check out the killing of the sacred deer now
Omg this is the video I never knew I needed!!! A24 is one of my fave distributors for film cuz they’re so different and unique from what we normally get to see! I haven’t seen all of their horror yet but I’ve seen a good amount! Faves for me are Midsommar, Hereditary, It Comes At Night (perfect for the current state of the world right now lol), and The Witch!! I just watched The Monster in January late at night (bad idea) and it scared the shit out of me which is very rare!! It’s literally one of my worst nightmares (alone in the woods at night, neglected kid scenario)
My list (skipping the many I still haven't gotten around to. (How have I not seen Climax yet? argh)) is... 9. High Life (2018) 8. Midsommar (2019) 7. The Monster (2016) 6. The Witch (2015) 5. The Lighthouse (2019) 4. The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017) 3. It Comes at Night (2017) 2. Hereditary (2018) 1. Under the Skin (2013) The 5 that I ranked higher are all SO GOOD for me. When I was writing this down I couldn't believe The Lighthouse and The Killing Of A Sacred Deer wouldn't be in the top3, but 3. It Comes At Night is... everything... I find it one of the creepiest films with one of the best atmospheres ever. 2. [copy and paste all Emma said about Hereditary, I agree with everything.] 1. Under The Skin is one of the films I've watched in theaters the most in my life. I just can't get enough of it. I've recently started listening to the soundtrack too, and it's also so perfect. Everything about Under The Skin is perfect for me. So yes, here we are.
Tusk is so underrated. It definitely has its flaws, but it's memorability and originality transcends even some of the most iconic horror films. It's fully committed to both horror and comedy, which is rare. I would have switched your number one and your number two, but I'm glad your number one is getting the praise it deserves. That film knew the risks it was taking and embraced them. Whether anyone fully figures it out or not, it will always be a powerful experience. It's a good thing you made this video before False Positive came out, because wow... you wouldn't have been able to say there are no bad ones on the list!
My least favourite is definitely Tusk🙈 BUT I do think it's because I really really don't like body horror. Its the one horror genre that gives me nightmares. Its why I avoid Hostel esk movies and human centipede etc. It just grosses me out and is too much to deal with mentally. I didn't like lighthouse as a film but can appreciate it as art. I haven't seen killing of a sacred dear. Midsommar is my number 1 A24. My husband and I just sat in the cinema for 10 minutes afterwards in awe of what we just watched. Incredible list I have some movies to watch as there was a few I hadn't heard of
Was I the only one utterly traumatized by Tusk? It had me closer to puking than Cannibal Holocaust and Men Behind the Sun, I really didn't expect to be shattered and I still don't get why I was.
I liked Tusk as well but I think the context I watched it in was one of the main reasons. I had never even heard of it or seen a trailer, but I saw it for free on Amazon prime one night so I decided to watch it. The description said something about an arrogant man becoming a walrus, and mentioned that it was directed by Kevin Smith. So I legit thought that it was going to be goofy Kevin Smith style comedy about a man who gets a walrus spell/curse put on him and has a wacky adventure trying to figure out how to become human again and has to learn not to be a jerk (e.g. The Emperor's New Groove). It was so extremely different than what I imagined it was going to be, and I loved it a lot for that reason alone.
Totally respect your placement on It Comes At Night, and I understand where you’re coming from with the misleading trailer. I went in blind when I saw it and it ended up becoming one of my favorite psychological horrors ever made and it really parallels the global pandemic we all are experiencing, we all know about what’s going on but we don’t at the same time and that’s truly what makes it terrifying. Please give it a rewatch if you haven’t already
I was stuck in a boarding school in the cold snowy woods of CT. Always stuck alone overnight at vacation waiting for a Saturday flight home to TX. I relate on another level to The Blackcoatdaughter(February). Great film. Oz Perkins ftw
Dope to see Tusk make your top 5! I went in blind and was truly horrified by it. I can’t recall the last time I was to-my-soul disturbed. It definitely was a strange experience, and I’m happy to see it receive some love for being absurd.
That background is so awesome! I don’t know why but I’m always attracted to the backgrounds of a creator’s videos. It keeps me hooked and yours is great for this video!
when I first saw tusk, until the end, I was like wow this is such a good psychological thriller. I really liked it, but again, the ending was weird? however, I appreciate the film
Right!? It is definitely worth the watch. It was sad in its own way and has a lesson to be learned in the ending. I felt the same way. Its underappreciated because its not typical for the producer and his normal comedy films.
@@spookyastronauts It's ok. I made that comment before I finished your list and you redeemed yourself with Sacred Deer at number 1. That movie is a masterpiece!
Having to make yours a top-5 showed me just how good A24 has been. Leaving off Under The Skin and Hereditary actually pained me, as they almost seem like they all should be tied for 1st Haha
I really like how honest you are because most people would have caved and tweaked their rankings so that it's not completely dishonest, but won't make people mad either. I really like all these movies and they're super hard to rank, but of the ones I've seen, here's my ranking (The top 3 and bottom 2 were pretty easy but the middle four are super loose); 1. The Witch (2015) (9.5/10) 2. The Blackcoat's Daughter (2015) (9/10) 3. Hereditary (2018) (8.5/10) 4. It Comes at Night (2017) (8.5/10) 5. Under the Skin (2013) (8/10) 6. Midsommar (2019) (8/10) 7. The Lighthouse (2019) (8/10) 8. Green Room (2015) (7/10) 9. In Fabric (2018) (6.5/10)
Of what I've seen: 1. The Lighthouse. One of my favorite films of all time. 2. The Witch. Unbelievable period accuracy- love the language especially. 3.Hereditary. Far and away the most disturbing horror movie I've ever seen. I almost turned it off about halfway through just because of how unnerved I was. 4. Midsommar. Brilliant visual design and well-acted, just not particularly engaging/frightening. 5.Killing of a Savred Deer. Couldnt even finish it- characters were completely unlikable, attempt at causing dread didnt work for me, wanted to punch the antagonist any time he came on screen.
Agree with pretty much everything you said! Especially about Hereditary (LOVE that movie) and Killing of a Sacred Deer (I had to force myself to finish the movie. Absolutely hated all the characters and felt nothing for any of them)
The Witch, Under the Skin, Goodnight Mommy and the Orphanage are definitely my favourite horror movies of the past 2 decades, I NEED more movies like these. 🙏
Requiem for a dream is my favorite movie of all time. Everything about it just resonates with me. And i agree, its a horror. And the scariest part is they are all just human. No ghosts or ghouls. Just humans being themselves.
Thanks to your video I've noticed I've been missing 10 amazing films to watch! I must say, though, the others I've watched are the best in your list and mine, so far. Thank you very much for making this list, now I've got plenty of films to enjoy! I love your voice and the way you explain everything :)
The Monster - I remember seeing this one and I totally agree that it feels like it would've been better as a short! High Life - I DNF'ed it. I don't remember how far into the movie I got but eventually I quit because I found it to be way too full of itself and not really having enough to say. It Comes At Night - so, with this one I actually went into it blind. The only thing I knew about it was that everybody hated it. I loved it so much. I don't know where to catagorize it and I can't really call it a movie that changed my life, but I really appreciated the experience and the final conclusion was really haunting and had been building the whole time and boy it was uncomfortable. Life After Beth - haven't watched it yet, but am considering it The Hole in the Ground - I watched it. I have no memory or anything that happens in this film other than that I was very bored and uninvested the whole time - and there were a few interesting and cool cinematography choices. The Black Coat's Daughter - I have been meaning to rewatch this one because the first time I saw it I recognized that this was a good quality film, but I just didn't connect with it at all. Wanna give it another chance someday. Green Room - LOVE IT! That hand behind the door scene was one of the most horrific things I've ever seen. Dear god. I loved how the main character's stupidity was very relatable and you were frustrated but you also could relate to that type of panicked idiotic problem solving. In Fabric - haven't seen this one! I'm intrigued! The Vvitch - feel about it in the same way I feel about The Black Coat's Daughter. I want to watch it again. The Lighthouse - it NUTS! Probably the best lovecraftian horror film since In The Mouth Of Madness! :D Under the Skin - was a hypnotic watch. Absolutely loved it. Tusk - haven't seen it, probably never will haha xD I love that you love it, though! Good for you, man! Climax - Made me an instant fan of Gaspar Noe. I have seen almost all his films after I saw this one. I love love loooove this one! Midsommar - Didn't really care for this one, I have to admit, but I will support Ari Aster everytime he releases a new movie. Hereditary - no words needed. One of the best horror movies ever made. Love it so so so much and I forgive the cult-aspect which in my opinion dragged it down a little bit. The Killing of a Sacred Deer - again, The Black Coat's Daughter and The Vvitch join the club with this one when it comes to movies I know are expertly crafted but were off putting and I probably need to watch them a few more times to be able to make up my mind about them. Great list, Emma! As always, your opinions are fun to listen to and lists are always fun! Go you! :D
Just discovered your channel after watching your review of The Lodge. Amazing movie. This list is awesome!!! I guess now I officially have to watch The Killing of a Sacred Deer. Oh boy...
It's so nice to come here and see your videos about all of our first love, horror and spooky stuff lol its definitely a break from all the craziness happening in our world today... its like we're living in a real life apocalyptic horror movie lol Thanks for keeping us sane Emma! You're an angel, a dark twisted angel, but nevertheless, an angel 🤣 HAPPY HAUNTING and well wishes down under🖤

Again...check out "The Devils" with Oliver Reed. Disturbing to the Nth Degree.
@@ersturdevant2831 Yes, it's so disturbing that they've never released the full uncut version anywhere.

I love The Killing Of A Sacred Deer. Glad to see someone who doesn’t think it’s boring 😎
It's amazing!
clonekillerz I didn’t really like it, but I don’t think that it’s boring.
To me, that's a masterpiece!
Angela Comprés I agree!
clonekillerz i wouldn’t call it boring at all, I’d call it slow for sure though
Herriditary has a weird connection with me. The first time I finally got decided to watch it about 20 minutes in I got the call my grandma had passed away tragically. I didn’t pick the movie up again for months. Even now when I watch it it still brings up hard memories. It’s a real good Movie though!
Art with Rstardoodles Wow thats crazy
wow
*Hereditary
That has nothing to do with the movie though. You’re just forming connections between 2 unrelated things which is a very common human practice.
That movie slightly fucked me up.
I never realized how much I love A24 movies until seeing this video. I love almost all of these movies! Oddly, I haven't seen or even heard of The Killing of a Sacred Deer! I'll be checking that one out for sure.
Hope you enjoy it Julie!
It is a Fantastic movie ! In my top 3 for sure !!!
That was the same for me as well I stumbled across the trailer while doing research on the director. It wasn’t much promotion for it and the trailer doesn’t give anything away either.
It’s coming to Netflix this month !

Your Climax review was kind of disappointing because the only negative thing you had to say about it was that it made you uncomfortable, so it's almost like you would have enjoyed it had it not been so intense, whatever though. Still appreciate your channel
I’m so hyped for Saint Maud whenever that comes out.

A24 just blows every other movie company out of the water, in my opinion. They just completely align with what I love in film. Thank you for this video!
It's crazy that A24 have made at least 4 of the best films of the decade! Of the ones I've seen this is my list!
1: Hereditary
2: Midsommar
3: The Blackcoat's Daughter
4: The Witch
5: The Lighthouse
6: Green Room
7: The Hole in the Ground
8: The Killing of a Sacred Deer
9: High Life
10: Under the Skin
11: Life After Beth
It Comes at Night is honestly my favorite horror film of all time. The amount of tension Shults manages to build throughout is outstanding. I also think it has one of the best / bleakest endings out of any horror film. He managed to create an ending that was both surprising and completely inevitable.
I love that Shults refuses to reveal exactly what “It” is, instead implying that humans are the real monsters.
Its a masterfull subversive piece of cinema
Fernando Haberfeld I agree 100%. The marketing was abysmal, and it really hurt the film. But going in blind is the best way to fully appreciate it.
Bahh hated it
I agree 100%🙏🏻
Went in blind. Loved it, totally agree.
I made the mistake of watching Tusk while I was eating my lunch.
haha whooops!
Your channel has helped me find so many hidden gems that I've never seen before. Thank you so much!
Top 5: Green room, The killing of a sacred dear, Lighthouse, Midsommar, and one of my all time favorite movies Hereditary.
my ranking, i haven't seen much tho:
midsommar 5/5
the lighthouse 5/5
hereditary 5/5
the witch 5/5
the blackcoat's daughter 3.5/5
it comes at night 2/5
merjem i agree with hereditary (favorite move of all time), lighthouse and the witch. but midsommar kinda dragged on for me, it’s really beautifully shot but the story kinda felt slow moving and the beginning with the parents i felt like it was unnecessary, they could’ve done more with it
i have it at 4/5
BHENgames the intro with the parents and sister was so tragically horrifying that it actually scared me of how abrupt and expertly shot it was.
The black coats daughter is phenomenal 5/5 easily
@@jasont2003 agreed, that movie legit gave me nightmares which is hard to do
I feel as though Killing of a Sacred Deer is so underrated, such an incredible film!!!! Same as Climax, both these movies really shook me to the core. Shoutout to A24 for saving horror.
Climax so disappointing to me... Killing of a Sacred Deer is solid though..
You gained a subscriber in me the moment you placed Tusk in your top 5. I watched the movie with my wife and a friend and they both thought it was stupid - I, on the other hand, actually thoroughly enjoyed it haha. Good to know I wasn't the only one!
I found " Under The Skin " to be a phenomenal film. So much subtle tension. Truly an artistic masterpiece. 5 🌟
A lingering, truly disturbing films, like Oliver Reed's "The Devils" and "Eraserhead."
Yeah, I think it would be #1 on this list. I'd have to re-visit some of them before I committed to that choice, but I think it would be at the top.
I found it an odd flick. Ending was very uncomfortable and sad.
I agree. I feel like cosmic horror has so much to offer creativity-wise. And the scenes where she lured the victims into her realm along with the sounds and visuals prove this; so haunting and unique!
Ranking the ones I have seen
1- Hereditary
2- The Witch
(First two are almost interchangeable)
3- It Comes At Night
4- Midsommar
5- The Lighthouse
I’m so happy that Tusk was so high on your list. That really surprised me and it was so welcome hahaha
The Lighthouse is a masterpiece
It's good.....
Totally thought Hereditary would be number one. I still haven't seen The Killing of a Sacred Dear, but now I absolutely have to. I do enjoy me some Yorgos Lanthimos.
He is everything!
It's a really good film, but also a difficult one. I loved it.
thanks for the spoiler
Also, that firm has the BEST jump scares I've ever seen!
I watched it in the theater when it came out. I loved the slow moodiness of it as opposed to waiting for It to come at night. It's rich in subtext. I think the title does a disservice to it in equal to the marketing. Rewatching during the pandemic is a good move too! Haha
@@ikesours6558 seriously. It definitely hits different, given the circumstances.
I’m so glad you loved Sacred Deer too. I adored Lobster and this one didn’t disappoint.
Haven’t seen you in a long time and love that you just got recommended to me!! 🧡✨

The Killing of A Sacred Deer and Hereditary are interchangeably my favorite movies! Never even realized KOASD was by A24!
Tusk is definitely my number 1. So I totally understand your love for it and was happy to see it was so high on this list. Great video as always.
The Blackcoat's Daughter is my favorite horror movie after the original Martyrs and Hereditary. They all haunt me.
I haven't seen all of them, but here's the rank list of all the ones I have watched:
Midsommar (2019)
The Witch (2015)
Under the Skin (2013)
Hereditary (2018)
The Lighthouse (2019)
In Fabric (2018)
I just watched the killing of a sacred deer and I honestly didn't find it disturbing at all. But thanks for notifying me about that climax movie! I love movies that involve LSD lmao I'll be sure to check that one out! Great video btw.
I was surprised with the “tusk” pick (I dig it) and then you throw “killing of a sacred deer” at number one! Good ranking
don't ever apologise for your opinions!!
one thing i love about you Emma is how passionate you get about movies, even if they're "unpopular" it's still so uplifting seeing you get excited over something cheesy 💗
“I could have put it in the back to please you all, but I love Tusk so much”.
Can I use your line for myself whenever I have a hot take on a list that I know won’t please people? Because I loved it!
Also, I do respect your opinion. My favorite A24 horror is The VVitch.
Loved the hyped up films: The Lighthouse, Hereditary, and Midsommar. Now, I’m interested to watch The Killing of a Sacred Deer
About to watch Under The Skin. Already the beginning score is chilling...
i was scared you weren’t going to include tusk, but literally screamed with joy when i saw it for #5!!
I absolutely loved Black Coat’s Daughter and I couldn’t even tell you why but I just loved how different and creepy it was
Alliee Raee I feel the same way about this film! loved it and can’t explain it lol. It’s so good though
Tori Morrow exactly! It’s the vibe and just everything it’s so intriguing
I really agree. I'm not 100% where exactly it would be on my list, but most definitely top-5.
No real plot but it has amazingly disturbing atmosphere.
In Fabric was insane! I LOVED the sound design in that movie, particularly the TV ad and the fire siren at the end. Totally a trip
For me: Midsommar, Hereditay, The Witch, The Blackcoat´s Daughter, (Under the Silver Lake*), The Lighthouse, In Fabric, (Ex Machina*), The Killing of a Sacred Deer, The Monster, The Hole in the Ground, Climax, It comes at Night, Green Room, Under the Skin...*= if one might call them Horror(esque) ;-)
Great idea, Emma :-) Blumhouse next?
Oh, Enemy needs to be between The Lighthouse and In Fabric :-D Nearly forgot...
I gotta go with The Witch, Midsommar, Ex Machina
Arthouse horror is on a tear right now. Love A24 !!!
Literally waited for this to premiere 🤣 Yes Emma/A24 content ! ❤️
Of the 8 that I’ve seen, here is my ranking.
1. Hereditary- a family tragedy turned horror. Wow. Love this film. Has some genuinely terrifying scenes.
2. The Lighthouse- acting is wonderful, so metaphorical, a wonderful display of a descent into madness
3. The Witch- beautiful film, intense, creepy and very well made.
4. Tusk- funny, strange, disturbing, dumb, emotional, and disgusting makes this a fun watch
5. Green Room- very intense with some great performances, good gore as well
6. Midsommar- over the top weird at times, drawn out, but has some memorable scenes, incredible acting
7. The Killing of a sacred deer- acting felt off, simply wasn’t entertaining enough, but disturbing
8. The Hole in the Ground- first two thirds were great, last third was disappointing, good performances
So Awesome !! What an outstanding A24 List. Thank you so much Emma !!! Be safe out there.
Thank you! You too!
Great idea for a video. While we're waiting for more films, maybe you could do other similar company driven lists (Blumhouse?). Thanks Emma. You made me think about The Blackcoat's Daughter...
I dont think I could do any similar lists given this one was so short. The Blum house would have to be at least 50 movies haha!
Awesome list - I'm a little embarrassed to admit that, despite being a movie nerd and a horror fan, I really didn't know much at all about the A24 movies. You've given me some homework, so thank you! :D
That is some mighty fun homework! 🤘🏼
These covid-19 lockdowns are driving us all to a "The Lighthouse" situation lol
My dad is this close to ask me if I like his cooking.
Thanks a lot for this list, great content as always ✌🏼
Next he’ll be asking “why’d ya spill yer beans…”
Fantastic list! Here's my top 5
1. Under The Skin
2. The Witch
3. The Lighthouse
4. In Fabric
5. The Hole In The Ground
Tony collett in every movie is jaw dropping
I love you for loving Tusk 😄💛
Great list, I agree with many, I need to really think about how my list would look like 🤔
Yorgos Lanthimos might be my favourite director at the moment
I did NOT realize Toni Colette is Australian! I have killing of a sacred deer on my Prime list for years now but have yet to watch it. Of the ones I’ve seen ...The Lighthouse, Green Room, Climax (I feel my blood pressure rising and anxiety increasing just thinking about that movie), MidSommar, the VVitch and Hereditary as my number 1...
Oh my gosh you need to see muriel's wedding!
Your video was terrific, with great enthusiasm. and heart. You can really see and hear your excitement about these movies, keep up the good work.
surprised by your number 1 pick! though I agree it is a wonderful film. here's what my list would be, ranked from worst to best, minus hole in the ground, in fabric, the monster and life after Beth bc I haven't seen those ones :<
12. Climax
11. Tusk
10. High Life
9. Hereditary (I rlly want to give it a second try though bc everyone seem to rlly love it but I didn't really on my first viewing!)
8. Under the Skin
7. It Comes at Night
6. The Blackcoat's Daughter (weirdly enough this is the scariest film for me out of this whole list lol. it's so goddamn creepy)
5. The Witch
4. The Killling of a Sacred Deer
3. The Lighthouse
2. Green Room (I'm not sure why but boy do I love this one)
1. Midsommar. It took me a while to actually watch it since I didn't like Hereditary but I was completely floored by this film. hands down one of the best horror of all time for me!!!
Great Picks! surprised by your 9!
I need the check out the killing of the sacred deer now
What about Ex Machina? I know it's sci-fi, but it deffo has horror elements, too. It's my favorite A24 movie, with Hereditary being a very close 2nd.
No matter how your movies are ranked on your list, I really love how honest and passionate you are about your opinions. Superb video!
I just watched The Killing of a Sacred Deer for the first time and that was easily one of the most disturbing movies I’ve seen. Great film.
9. High Life (2018)
8. Midsommar (2019)
7. The Monster (2016)
6. The Witch (2015)
5. The Lighthouse (2019)
4. The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017)
3. It Comes at Night (2017)
2. Hereditary (2018)
1. Under the Skin (2013)
The 5 that I ranked higher are all SO GOOD for me.
The Killing of a Sacred Deer and Hereditary are foils of one another
I liked Tusk as well but I think the context I watched it in was one of the main reasons.
The Blackcoat’s Daughter is awesome!
I AM SO GLAD IM NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO LOVED TUSK. My sister and best friend hate it but it’s probably one of my absolute favorites!
Glad to see Tusk on here. I think it's underrated.
Agreed!
Hell yeah 🤘🏼🤘🏼
Tusk. Hehehe. Ok, I'll stop. My favorite is "The Witch," hands down. Next would be "Midsommer."
Thanks for sharing Media :D
That background is so awesome! I don’t know why but I’m always attracted to the backgrounds of a creator’s videos. It keeps me hooked and yours is great for this video!
when I first saw tusk, until the end, I was like wow this is such a good psychological thriller. I really liked it, but again, the ending was weird? however, I appreciate the film
Right!? It is definitely worth the watch. It was sad in its own way and has a lesson to be learned in the ending. I felt the same way. Its underappreciated because its not typical for the producer and his normal comedy films.
Nice list! Although the Witch at number 8 is a crime. Lol
I watched it again last night! so great!
Hard to order them all since they are all great films!
@@spookyastronauts It's ok. I made that comment before I finished your list and you redeemed yourself with Sacred Deer at number 1. That movie is a masterpiece!
And I thought I was the only person who liked Tusk?
you've got The Blackcoat's Dauther Tusk and Under the Skin high in your ranking? LOVE YOU. just love you.
1. Midsommar [Gory, Dramatic, Frightening]
2. Hereditary [Sad, Terrifying, Amazing]
3. Climax [Chaotic, Lovely, Hypnotic]
4. In Fabric [Hypnotic, Dark, Unsettling]
5. The Killing of a Sacred Deer [Dark, Unsettling, Intense]
6. The Lighthouse [Haunting, Mind-Bending, Terrifying]
Great list! I would probably have my top 5 be hereditary, under the skin, the lighthouse, climax, and the witch
I hadn't heard of A24 so I was surprised to find I've seen some of these. I think my favourite is hereditary
For brevity, I'll just do a top-5:
5) Climax
4) Midsommar
3) The Lighthouse
2) The Witch
1) Killing of a Sacred Deer
Having to make yours a top-5 showed me just how good A24 has been. Leaving off Under The Skin and Hereditary actually pained me, as they almost seem like they all should be tied for 1st Haha
i can't even express my love for midsommar
I really like how honest you are because most people would have caved and tweaked their rankings so that it's not completely dishonest, but won't make people mad either. I really like all these movies and they're super hard to rank, but of the ones I've seen, here's my ranking (The top 3 and bottom 2 were pretty easy but the middle four are super loose);
1. The Witch (2015)
(9.5/10)
2. The Blackcoat's Daughter (2015)
(9/10)
3. Hereditary (2018)
(8.5/10)
4. It Comes at Night (2017)
(8.5/10)
5. Under the Skin (2013)
(8/10)
6. Midsommar (2019) (8/10)
7. The Lighthouse (2019) (8/10)
8. Green Room (2015)
(7/10)
9. In Fabric (2018)
(6.5/10)
Of what I've seen:
Tusk is fantastic and a gem of Kevin smith’s filmography
🧢. That movie was cheeks
It was hilarious to me but jesus christ it was weird
I respect your honesty about Tusk Emma but no for me. Love you!♥️
The Lighthouse is one of my top 5 favorite films of all time now. Absolutely love Robert Eggars.
Gotta love A24 for the complexity of movies they make. My top 5 are Hereditary, Tusk, Midsommar, The Killing of a Sacred Deer, and Green Room.
"Ex Machina" and "Good times": not horror films...but they are. "Clockwork Orange", "Requiem for a Dream", "Naked Prey" all horror films to me.
agreed, "Ex Machina" is sci-fi/horror 100%
Requiem for a dream is my favorite movie of all time. Everything about it just resonates with me. And i agree, its a horror. And the scariest part is they are all just human. No ghosts or ghouls. Just humans being themselves.
@@ashleyharris5409 The final sequence is devastating ("...she's not coming back": Jared Leto, with a nurse, minus an arm).
Life After Beth - haven't watched it yet, but am considering it
The Hole in the Ground - I watched it.
Under the Skin - was a hypnotic watch.
Go you! :D
Thank you so much for adding your opinions.
But you do need to see Tusk ! :P
@@spookyastronauts I will do it for you!
Just discovered your channel after watching your review of The Lodge. Amazing movie. This list is awesome!!! I guess now I officially have to watch The Killing of a Sacred Deer. Oh boy...
Welcome mark!
Fun fact: the kid who plays the son in Sacred Deer also plays Atreus in God of War.
cool
It's so nice to come here and see your videos about all of our first love, horror and spooky stuff lol its definitely a break from all the craziness happening in our world today... its like we're living in a real life apocalyptic horror movie lol Thanks for keeping us sane Emma! You're an angel, a dark twisted angel, but nevertheless, an angel 🤣 HAPPY HAUNTING and well wishes down under🖤
