    Excellent video, Jimmy! It's one thing to use a camera for a week and write a review. But, a year of shooting 100,000 images (plus lots of video as you said) in professional use really wrings out a product to reveal its strengths and weaknesses. I it good to hear that your experience has validated this camera for you, and therefore for many thousands of others.
    I bought the OM-1 during the pre-release period to get the promotional benefits. I sold one of my matching set of E-M1 II's then, so now have the OM-1, an E-M1 Mk II, an E-M5 Mk III, an E-M1 original (don't really use it, but I like it), a PEN E-P5, a PEN E-PL9 (for sale), and several older Olympus and Lumix P&S cameras. I got the E-M5 Mk III (silver) at the close out discounted price when the OM-5 was released in November. I had an original E-M5 and had always missed it and didn't see the advantage (for me) of the OM-5 since I had an OM-1. You just have to love the E-M5 series, so the E-M5 Mk III is my everyday camera I take whenever I leave the house. I went full old school with the E-M 5 by adding a black leather half-case. People think it's beautiful and want to ask about it, so it works really well for street photography. When I'm going out on a photo walk or serious shoot I take the OM-1, and often also the E-M1 Mk II with a complementary lens. The PEN E-P5 is for when I need to travel very light. My gear is much better than I am, but the more I use it, the better I get.
    Thanks for all the work you put into your videos. They are priceless.

    Great review! I love that you keep it subjective, highlighting your experiences while actually working with the camera. While I love my OM-1 and learned a lot by learning how to use it, I keep going back to my EM-5 mk3 often, especially for going out with friends and family, as it is smaller, lighter and less professional looking. The images I get are just as good in most cases. The OM-1 is an improvement in nearly every aspect but also made me appreciate more what I already had. It showed me again that most often, when I am disappointed with my images, it really is more due to a lack of my photographic skills and understanding than a shortcoming of my tools. So the best „feature“ of the OM-1 to me is that it motivates me a lot to improve my side of the equation.

    • @RoderickJMacdonald
      @RoderickJMacdonald Год назад +1

      How much of “your side of the equation” is knowledge of the camera you are working with and how much is general photography skill? Your answer will be useful to me and perhaps to others.

    • @sourcebased
      @sourcebased Год назад

      @@RoderickJMacdonald thanks for asking!Learning how the camera works is very important so it does not “get in the way”. But I struggle more with the general stuff. Often I don’t like my composition, the focus does not sit right (needs practice), I have not enough depth of field (aperture too wide), unwanted motion blur (shutter speed too slow) etc. So it is more a question of having everything set up fast enough to my liking and still catching the decisive moments. And developing my photographic eye. This will just take time. I am critical with my images and see my errors, that is a good sign I guess.

    • @RoderickJMacdonald
      @RoderickJMacdonald Год назад +1

      @@sourcebased I wish I had the self knowledge that you seem to have about your photography.
      I am hardly one to be giving advice, but I suspect that part of the secret is curation: brutally rejecting most of your photos. Of those that remain, only share a few. As you wrote, I think that dissatisfaction with, for example, your compositions is a big step towards improvement. If I read you correctly, there is a tension between taking the time to get the composition right on the one hand, and acting quickly enough to catch decisive moment on the other. In my case, that is partly a question of planning (having the camera set up properly for the situation), partly a question of mastery of my camera, so that I know what to do immediately, and partly a question of luck. The only solution for this last is taking many pictures and discarding most of them.
      Perhaps you could be more aggressive in increasing ISO?

      I don't have the OM 1. But do have om 10mk2 and original om 1 mk1. I shouldn't imagine there would be any visible difference in 99% image quality between any of the cameras mentioned including OM1. I have pictures taken with my om10 that compare to my sony full frame. Most cases indistinquishable. Especially with modern software.

Got into Olympus a few years ago as my 'fun' cameras, starting with a Pen-F, then added a EM1 Mk III and the OM-1. Love the feel and, more importantly, the images from all of them. Jimmy, great context. For me as an OM-1 user for a year also, the only thing that I think OM system needs to improve for me is the CAF plus tracking for human. The subject detection caf and caf tracking is fine, it works extremely well with birds and other subject with its Ai subject detection autofocus but the caf plus tracking with human still lacks behind all the competitors. The ability to put a single box and track makes it so much easier to shoot sports and event photography when you can just focus on composition. I hope you, Jimmy
    as a OM system ambassador can channel that message to OM system. That’s the only thing makes hold OM-1 back from being the most versatile and compact system in the market.

    I use the OM-1 since it was introduced and I am still excited. With expanded ISO, I shoot until ISO12800 and can reduce almost any noise with Topaz Denoise AI thanks also to increased dynamic range. Especially helpful when short exposure is required such as birds in flight. With the Stary Sky Autofokus I created milky way pictures like never before. The in camera ND filter makes nice effects for blurry water. And in camera Focus stacking is great for macro, such as insects. Maybe for video the new G9II is better but for my video needs it's ok except that there is only manual focus when I do 10x slow motion with 240/24 frames.

      I'm waiting and hoping that with the release of new firmware they're address a few of these things. The processor is clearly capable of more. Perhaps 10 bit 4:2:2 recording? Or autofocus while at 240/24 frames. I'd also like to see custom LUTs. It's possible. I'm really hoping OMDS is working on a big update.

    Great review Jimmy and I 100% agree with your assessment of the OM-1 features. My original camera was EM5 MI, then Olympus upgraded me for free to EM5 MII which as been my goto camera for my Storm chasing and Landscape Photography. However that camera is now my backupcamer since getting the OM-1 and I LOVE it! I can't wait to break it in on my Storm chasing adventures, since I live in Canada storm season is shorter than that of the US season, and put it through some rigorous paces. I have since spread out into architectural and pet photography. So far working with this camera is a dream. Images and colours are very natural and the noise at higher ISO's are still manageable. OM Systems is on the right track and I have been very impressed with all their product releases. I am sad that this OM-1 will be the last "Olympus Branded" product but I am excited by the rejuvenated feel OM Systems seems to have and their commitment to listening to "US" consumers of what we want a camera or lens to be. The future seems bright.
    Cheers Jimmy

I haven't had a chance to try out all the new features yet, but I'm looking forward to it. All the AF modes, subject finder (planes, birds, dogs, etc.) and some of the other features are a little overwhelming right now, but I'll try to get a handle on it. I found out CP+ is this weekend, so I might drop by there and hit the OM booth. Cherry Blossom season will start here in Tokyo in a few weeks, that will be my first test. I'm going to save up to buy the Zuiko 100-400 non Pro. That should make a killer combo with the OM-1.

The OM1 blasts the GH6 out of the water for stills and computational photography and whilst the video capability is good it’s well below par with the GH6. As always a very great video. As myself always believe to do more with less, which is what brought me to my beloved Lumix G9 which I pair with Olympus pro glass. Though amazing for landscapes and street photography, for portraiture and indoor photos, I found myself frequently frustrated, even when using the very fast Oly 25m 1.2. The light gathering and auto focus could always use some improvement. This brough me to the world of full frame Canons, specifically my EOS R. I must say that the auto focus far exceeded that of the Lumix and light gathering was a no brainer, especially with Canon's 1.4 lenses. Though I love the Oly Pros and bound to continue to use my MFT system, when it matters most, I will always reach for the Canon.

    I would like to see the next FW upgrade to include the ability to assign image review to the lens function button. I can assign preview but not review. My Nikon camera allows this, and I use it all the time, especially for macro work. I know you can set the image review time in the camera menu, but I prefer to have complete control over it. Yes you can push the play button, but I like the way the lens function button falls right under my left thumb. I know, this is a first world problem so to speak, but since you're asking.... One improvement I love over their past cameras is the new EVF. It is so much better than their past cameras, and really improves the useability of the camera, especially if you like to use manual focus, in macro work for example. They should really have done this when they brought out the EM1x.

    Great review! I have had the OM-1 also since the launch when I pre-ordered it. Obviously I confirm that it is a dream to use and like you, I also use the LiveND filter the most. I don't think it is easily substituted by actual ND filters because often I found myself wanting ISO 80 and a particular shutter speed which I have to set the ND filter to (so either one of the 6 settings) If I would have only one ND filte, let's say 10 stops, I would have to compromise or use a tripod ,which is in itself also a compromise sometimes because you just can't get the angles you want at times when using a tripod. However there's also negatives: firstly the buttons on the back side got erased very quickly. I sent it back and they repaired the whole thing with new buttons so the service is amazing but why did this happen in the first place? Secondly the HiRes mode seems better than it actua;lly is. This was one of the main reasons I got the camera but I end up not rreally using it that much because somehow the regular files look better to me than the HiRes with its insanely tiny pixels. Sure the quality is there but MFT pixels are already small. For product photography oit is perfect but in most scenes there's always some movement involved and that is when you realize this is no more than just a feature. Having said that, I downloaded some panasonic S5ii HiRes file to compare (was thinking about getting fullframe too) and that file looked very bad compared to how Olympus does it.
    All in all the thing I love the most is the extreme IBIS and the mobility. A marvelous camera indeed

    Not sure why a lot of camera owners don’t get that their 1, 2, 5, 10 or even 20 year old camera takes pictures that are just as good as when it was new out of the box. And we know what good quality images look like become we have had them for over 100 years. So, the pictures my 20 year old Olympus E-300 makes that looked good when it was new still look good today.
    Newer cameras have faster, more accurate AF, more reliable auto white balance, bigger and better monitors… but there is normally no “wow” when I compare a shot from my newer 24mp camera to my old 8mp camera.

    Hi Jimmy, love my OM-1, but I am frustrated that OM Systems prevent all functions working fully with my Panasonic Lenses. I came from the G9, and wanted the far superior bird tracking that the OM-1 offers. It is just annoying that my expensive Pana Leica 200 f2.8 and 100-400 dont allow me to use Pro-Capture at 20, 15, 10 & 5 FPS only 25 in Pro-Cap SH2, which can be a bit too fast and burns through cards really quickly. They will work in sequential shooting at these speeds, so it is clearly something that could be fixed in a firmware update. The crazy thing is my 'cheap' Olympus 75-300 will allow these options! Explain that.

  • @rickpix
    @rickpix Год назад +1

    Hello Jimmy, why does it seem like nobody cares about the fact that you can't benefit of simultaneous dual slot video recording? You can record video only on SD A or SD B, but you can't record video on both cards to save yourself from an SD failure. I would like to buy the OM-1, but the lack of that feature is refraining me. I think it could be fixed by firmware, but no one is talking about it.

    returned my OM-1.. overkill for what I need, just good stills. OM-1 is indeed a great camera with amazing features but for stills, you can save yourself $1500 by buyin a used E-M1 Mark II to get just as good results for stills.

    I followed the same progression from EM-1 Mark ii to OM-1, shooting mainly wildlife. It's a significantly better tool but I have noticed one quirk. The bird detection will see a bird through vegetation, but the AF goes for the nearest object, not the bird which the AI had recognized. Hence, I collect pin-sharp leaves and branches with the fuzzy outline of a bird behind them. Do I have a setting wrong, or is this something a future firmware upgrade might fix?

    • @Red35Photography
      @Red35Photography  Год назад

      Thanks Nick. This is something that all subject detection fails to do, not just OM-1, I mean other camera brands too when it comes to animal/bird behind vegetations. Despite the camera 'sees' the bird behind, the focusing system is still phase/contrast base, so it picks up the leaves/branches in front and focuses those instead. The system always find the closest things to focus, so when the detection highlights the bird in its entirety, the box also covers whatever in front of it too, so I hope this makes sense. There's currently no solution to that, unless something revolutionary comes out and I am talking about next generation focusing system.

    • @Red35Photography

      Digital ND is convenient for sure and I actually do use it. But for those who are in the long exposure game would still prefer the use of physical ND for more natural look in the movement area. Especially sometimes there are some artifacts that you need to fix in post in some isolated cases.
