- Coastal Exploring - Rockpooling, Fossil Hunting and Beach-combing in Whitby in North Yorkshire. Visiting my ancestral home I take you for a walk around the local coastline and to where I began my passion for marine life and the shore. A lot of people have been asking where it all started for me... Here it is.
thankyou, I love rockpooling and just looking what's on the shore. living on an island on the west coast there is so much to see. I'm now disabled and struggle with mobility so watching your videos at least keeps me in touch with what an amazing place we live, thankyou, thankyou thankyou
Dawn k - I am so glad that you can join us on the shore and that you are finding our videos pod viewing. Best wishes Dawn and have a great weekend. 😊💙
Oh wow! I love history and was fascinated by the Abbey and fossils. Thank you so much!
Twyla Johnson - I am so glad that you enjoyed our video. This was a bit of an experiment to see if people would enjoy this type of video. 😊👍🏻
The Fish Locker I LOVED IT! If I can’t ever travel there, I appreciate someone showing me things I would never get to see otherwise.
Thank you for sharing. It is absolutely beautiful!
A Link - It is my pleasure. I am glad you enjoyed the video. 😊
I lived in Whitby for four years before I moved to the usa. Bram Stoker stayed in the hotel I worked at while he wrote Dracula. This brought back a lot of memories. My favourite video yet. Thank you!
- It is a lovely place to visit isn't it. :)
From the past few weeks I always look forward to see if you upload a new video. This video is absolutely great! You are not just an amazing fisherman, you are also a man of knowledge and I am grateful you share all this to your viewers specially the place where you grow up and where your passion all started.
LiZie Kim - Thank you Lizzie and I am very pleased I am able to share these things with you. Best wishes to you and your family and have a great weekend. 😊👍🏻💙
Love it!!!!! There was a tiny star by the brittle star you showed us! I love them so much! I went to Mexico years ago and played in the tidal pools for hours pulling interesting sea life out. I could do that all day! Thanks for all your amazing knowledge!
- It is my pleasure Elisabeth I am glad you enjoyed the video. The tiny brittle stars are far too fragile for my fat fingers Im afraid. I put the big one back. Best wishes and I hope you enjoy the rest of the content. :)
Can't imagine how beautiful it would be to grow up in such a place.
It surely is a wonderful place. 😊
Love seeing Whitby, and the abbey is glorious! Love history and all the “old stuff”.
Its a wonderful place to visit isn't it. 😊
These videos are so calming watching you have a an amazing walk is so fun and when you find some cute little animals and you are very knowledgeable about most watery eco systems
- I am so glad that we can share these things with everyone. Best wishes and take care. :)
thanks for taking us home John. When I was back in Scotland a few years ago I also took the time to revisit where my passion for fishing started and was glad to see to a couple of young lads fishing where I did +45 years ago.......memories of a lifetime :)
Malcolm Bennett - The funniest thing when I went for this walk. Is I bumped into my great uncle on the scaur looking for jet. He’s in his 80’s and I hadn’t seen him for 15 years. These type of places just take hold of your soul dont they.
awesome, great to see you post again... have a great weekend
- Haven't missed a weekly upload in over 70 weeks Joe. ;)
@@TheFishLocker oh my apologies i just started subscribing... such great content, thank you sir, lovely family
Your knowledge is outstanding and you have a lovely way of explaining things ,I enjoy every video you make!
- Thank you Alan, as I keep saying - we are simply sharing what we know and love doing. Best wishes to you and your family mate and stay safe. :)
Perfect video John, thank you once again.
- Thank you Robin. It is my pleasure. 😊
WOW!!! Now I have another destination on the list
- Whitby is a stunning place to visit. 😊
Great bit of viewing for me, I live in Thailand now but lived in the North East and visited Whitby regularly, great to see the place :)
steven richardson Thanks very much Steven. Glad you enjoyed it 👍🏻😊
Whitby . Well worth a visit . There is something for all ages , very interesting town and area
mike young - It is a lovely spot to visit isnt it. 😊👍🏻
It's interesting because I live in blyth which is a small fishing town in Northumberland I've walked over loads of things and never thought anything of them and now I know what most of the things are and in the summer when I'm walking my dog on the beach with my kids I can look out and show my kids ❤️
From Blyth too, but live in Cramlington now.... 👍
@@chrisdavison2022 it's interesting isn't it looking back at blyth beach how overlooked things there are
That is a beautiful story indeed.
@@natasharowe1997 it is. I spend a lot of time now on Seaton Sluice beach and rocks with the dog too... Only got back into fishing recently, and The Fish Locker has taught me so much that I never knew, both fishing and what's just out there on the beach...
- That is great to hear Natasha, I am so pleased to hear you are finding our content educational and good viewing. :)
Whitby looks charming. That bit of exploration puts your fishing exploits in a larger context. Always great to learn something about an area I know nothing about.
Hubert Van Calenbergh I feel the same way Hubert, everyday is a school day. Whitby is a lovely area with lots of character. Glad you enjoyed it. All the best 👍🏻😊🎣
All my life, I've probably used the expression "jet black" hundreds of times, and never wondered where it came from. Very cool.
- Every day is a school day. ;) I am glad that you enjoy the videos Mariah, take care and stay safe. ;)
I've lived in this area and known of jet all my life and I still never made the correlation. Thanks for pointing out something so obvious! I wonder how many other phrases we use frequently without realising the origin?!
Wonderful to see where you grew up. Sure a beautiful place. Thank you for sharing. I did miss Fish Locker Jr. and the Mrs.
Carol Lauver - Thank you Carol. It is a wonderful place. No this was a solo visit. A thousand mile round journey is too much for the little man. 😉
Fantastic video, thank you very much for the information
- It is my pleasure Doug. 😊
What a wonderful place to have grown up. Thank you for sharing!
Jennie Metts - It is my pleasure Jennie, I am glad you enjoyed our video. 😊👍🏻🎣🦀
Whitby is such a beautiful part of the Yorkshire coastline. Thanks for covering the differences between sea coal and jet - I'll be able to put that knowledge to good use the next time we go to Whitby now. This is only about the third of your videos I've seen so far but I'm going to subscribe so I can watch more because they are fascinating!
Jean Proctor - Welcome to our channel Jean. I am glad you found the information about jet/coal useful. Whitby is a lovely place to visit. I hope you enjoy the rest of our videos and take care. 😊
what beautiful scenery and countryside.. just gorgeous..
DumbestFisherman TV - North Yorkshire is just a wonderful place. Anyone visiting the UK would really be well visiting it just for the scenery. 😊👍🏻
@@TheFishLocker the UK is gorgeous, went once.. I really am a new world kind of guy though, I have to say.. nothing against anywhere else, I just like the extra breathing room... lol
DumbestFisherman TV - That really is one of the things I do envy the most about the states. So much more space. Here you are constantly on top of someone else.
@@TheFishLocker I fish this place called the Imperial Valley... something like 6000 miles of fish bearing ditches, drains, canals and reservoirs. You can drive for days and days and days, covering hundreds of miles, and never see another person fishing sometimes. This area starts about two hours from my front door, maybe a bit less, and the other fishermen around here call me crazy for driving out there to absolutely crush the fish, I just laugh...
DumbestFisherman TV - Sounds amazing. 😊🎣🐟
When its as wet as we have had it and there is just crap on the Telly, trust the Fish Locker to provide high class entertainment. Another most interesting video but please do me a favour and build an ark out of pallet wood so we can escape from the floods ha ha!
David B. - Haha. I was close to doing that. 😆
What a fantastic trip down memory lane. Spent many a day as a kid exploring the rocks around Whitby and the rest of the north east coast. Boro lad, used to go fishing off South Gare. Just been down to Devon to see my daughter and took the dog for a walk along the beach. I thought I knew what to look out for but your videos have taught me so much more. Thank you and keep them coming!
- Once you know what you're looking for its amazing what you see isn't it. 😊
I once came across a shoal of sandeels trapped in a large rockpool on Anglesey. Caught some of them with a kids fishing net and in doing so noticed activity from a large flatfish and a lobster. Managed to catch an eating sized Brill which was delicious, but couldn't get the lobster without diving in as the pool was too deep. Also used the sandeels to catch a few pollack and mackerel off the rocks. Happy memories.
The Cornish Attenborough strikes again.
Love your vids, keep it up.
I second this comment
👍👍👍😜🏴🦄🎣😁✌️
- Cornish? Really?
@@TheFishLocker I thought you were from Cornwall. It might have been mentioned on some former video comment section. But then the Whitby Attenborough if you like.
I learn so much from you. Thank you for the lovely video!
- It is our pleasure Laurie, I am glad you are enjoying the videos. Best wishes and have a great weekend. :)
Where do you live in Cornwall? And how the bloodyhell did you end up the other end of the country? Fascinating story I bet! Great video fella!
- Long story Sean. Just a drop in visit before getting back home. :)
I came for the foraging but I love the history talk! I love history and the old world monarchy has always fascinated me. That Abby that Henry Tudor destroyed under Anne Boleyns love spell is beautiful ☺ such a versatile channel and again, very relaxing to watch. Glad I found it!
- Thank you very much Vanessa, this is a subject that many folks have been asking me about so I thought this would be a good way to share it all with you. This type of video isn't our usual genre and is a bit of tester. If folks like it we will do more. :D
@@TheFishLocker I like it. I think your calm manner helps to bring people in and your obvious enjoyment in teaching keeps peoples attention. For me it was a delight to learn a few new things but also you made sure not to stray too far away from the foraging. It was a great balance. Good job
VanessaHBIC - Thank you very much. We will definitely be trying a few more of these. 😉👍🏻
nice video and history lesson ty
- It my pleasure. :)
Beautiful town view💕wonderful beach watching ✌nice video thanks friend✌🙆👍
- Thank you very much. :)
Beautiful part of the country. I'm from the South-East but I've got family in Pickering, Whitby and Goathland, this video reminded me of fossil hunting and turning rocks as a kid around those parts. There's an old shipwreck a bit further along in Sandsend that my grandad used to take me to, it was a long walk along the old train track from Sandsend carpark. You'd have to climb down the cliff and could only get to the shipwreck on the lowest of spring tides, the wreck has 2 big round engines visible - do you have any info on it? I've always been curious of the history of it!
- I know the wreck you're talking about. We just used to call it "The Boilers"
That's the one, I've never managed to find out what the vessel used to be named or any other info on when/how it got there. I bet there's an interesting story there
What a beautiful landscape and so peaceful! Thanks for the tour before the foraging.
Living The Good Life - It is my pleasure. A lot of folks have been asking where it all started for me. And I thought this would be a good way to share it all. 😊
Whitby is a lovely town. Interesting history. My Mom owned a necklace made of jet. Your videos are so informative. Greetings from New York.
debra bolton - It is a wonderful place to visit, such a rich history and IMO surrounded by some of the most beautiful countryside in the world. Hey jewellery is lovely isn’t it. Small world.haha. Have a great day Debra and all the best. 😊🎣🦀🌿
I love these search and find vlogs, and learned something new about Jet rock or should I say gemstone. Very interesting, and fun vlog.
- Glad you are enjoying the content Tom, best wishes and have a great weekend. :)
You can see an even smaller star at 22:38, left side.
Maritza Rivera - Yes it was far too small and fragile for my fat cold fingers to attempt to pick up.😆
Thank you for your fabulous teaching about your local area. I learned a lot. I come from down the road Lincolnshire and have never been to whitby. I also never knew how jet formed. I respect all creatures and thier environment and will visit your beautiful area thank you so much
- It is our pleasure Dawn. I am glad that you enjoyed the video and hope that you enjoy your time in Whitby. :)
Is this where the saying “jet black” comes from?
Yes it is
6atlantis - Yes it is. Give “Jet jewellery” a google. 😉
Best video ever! I love the videos with your family, too but the history you included is awesome!
Candice Clouse Garretson - Thank you very much Candice, this was a bit of a tester video to see how people would enjoy the new content. We will definitely be doing more. 😊👍🏻
I grew up just like that, and love the sea because of it .Good to come back to the start 👍👍
Robert Howard - It is Rob. I loved growing up where I did. Playing with my siblings and cousins on those same rocks and beaches. It is good to go back to the beginning from time to time. 😊👍🏻🎣🦀
I never knew that Bram Stoker himself involved that place in Dracula which is a classic
Scrooge McDuck - There is so much history in Whitby. Such an incredible place. 😊👍🏻
Quite an adventure today, got to know some more background about you, some history about the area thanks for the fun. I Can't wait for whats next just around the cove, Cheers mate.
austin berkley - I am glad you enjoyed joining me Austin, lots of folks have been asking me where I got started and this seemed like a good way to do it. 😊👍🏻 Have you seen tonight’s video?
@@TheFishLocker i don't believe i Have I'll definitely give it a look :D
I've got the same memories of Whitby from when I was a kid......days spent on the beach....going up and down the cliff path to the caravan site at the top....then doing the same with my kids when they were small.....I'm gonna have to pay it a long overdue visit 😊
- It is a lovely place to visit isn't it. 😊
How beautiful! So much history and amazing coast! Thank you for showing us your ancestral home! :)

I live in Whitby born and bread pal. Soon as Friday came after school I was down to my grans stayed every week till Sunday 131 Henrietta street. Lived on Tate hill n fish pier. Great video mate.
I had family there too....
- Thats cool John. But just a tip for you - edit the address out. You don't know who's reading ;)
Never thought got carried away thanks pal.
Thanks for the trip down memory lane John. I remember my dad and me filling 4 fish boxes with cod in a single afternoon jigging in his boat on Boulby deeps back in the summer of '76.
- Those times don't happen very often nowadays sadly.
Just love your site because it does so many things, entertains, teaches about animal life, covers safety and history. Great to see you in Whitby as it's part of the best coast anywhere, Scarborough, Filey, Staithes, Robin Hoods Bay and many many more. x
- Thank you very much Nick, we are simply sharing what we love doing and hopefully encouraging others to get out and enjoy the outdoors as well do, which is why I feel that the safety aspects are also important to include. Best wishes my friend and have a great weekend. :)
Whitby is a beautiful town. Looks really peaceful and friendly. Thanks for the entertaining video as well as the history lesson.
Farmer Bob - It’s is my pleasure Bob, the town is lovely. And a really stunning place to visit in the summer. But it does get wicked busy. 😉
I truly enjoy your walk exploring the Coast in Whitby in North Yorkshire. I enjoy exploring our beaches here in the U.S. and collected empty shells!
Bonnie Ricica - I am glad that we can share our passions Bonnie. 😊👍🏻🐚
Wow! This was a fantastic video, thank you for another great upload!
Sarah Lotter - It is my pleasure Sarah, I a glad you enjoyed it. Best wishes and have a great weekend. 😊👍🏻
That's human ingenuity for you:
-make something out of steel and make it fly.
-make something out of concrete and make it float.
- Its incredible isn't it. It's almost as if someone was saying "You can't make..... out of that!" And one guy saying "Oh I can't can I? Just watch me!!"
I liked that video a lot beutiful history and geology
- Thank you very much Josh, glad you enjoyed it. :)
Love that coastline. Found my first fossils between Boggle Hole and Ravenscar last year.
- Its a fine spot down Boggle Hole. Found many a good forage down that way in summers gone by ;)
@@TheFishLocker Got to see the seals too, so win win.
Nothing more fascinating for children than a rocky coast and mixed in some fossils! Great place to start. My start was on the rocky shore of the West Coast of Scotland. What lies under that next rock? Enjoyed that! Thanks.
Z Worm - You are absolutely right. The whole thing is just fantastic fun for kids isn’t it. It’s easy to see how we all loved it so much. 😊🐚🦀💙
I was actually hoping for you to make a video about the jurassic coasts over there! Very interesting and I would love to see more about it! I search for fossilized shark teeth over here on the beach in The Netherlands myself. Keep up the good work because I really love your informative content!
- Haha. I must have read your mind. I have been asked many many times how I got into this type of thing, and thought the best way was to show you with a video. :)
Very informative and a real good watch as usual John.. Love your channel. I'm from the North East, and want to start coastal foraging, but not much about that I've found... All different places miles apart. North shields for mussels, morcambe for cockles, Seaham for lobster, big crabs and velvet swimmers.. Would love to find a place that has them all together lol. Looking forward to your next bid, have a great day 👍👌
mark rose Thank you very much Mark. Sounds like you are well on your way with your foraging. But yes you get different things on different ground so you’re not going to find the two together. Keep on with it 👍🏻🐚🦀
I found you by chance I really enjoy it when you go rock pooling, I would be the first to run down the beach, I loved digging round in the pools. I had an accident and I lost the whole of my leg. I love the beech but I cant go near it now cus buggys sink in sand and stones so I cant get near to the sea. I have found your videos brilliant I love watching you go fishing and catching crabs and lobsters. I have adored you going on the sea shore and digging round, I would love to do that but can't. Seeing you catch and eat the shell fish with your family is brilliant, this might sound silly but I felt like I was there with you. Thank you for sharing what you do and I will watch out for other videos that you do. I had an accident 15 years ago I went under an 11 ton steam roller worst thing being disabled can't get anywhere near the sea and I love the sea, anyway thank you so much and I will join you again for one of your adventures take care Debbie not David xxxx
- Debbie, I am glad that you felt like you were sitting with us. That is exactly how we want you to feel. :D You are most welcome and welcome to our channel. We are simply sharing what we know and love doing. I am sorry to hear you are unable to enjoy the shore first hand but hopefully you can continue to enjoy the shore through our videos. Take care and have a nice day. :)
This might not be much but if you would like we could exchange numbers and I could go to my local Shore for you. I could FaceTime with you and you could tell me what to look at. The closest thing I have is Port Gardner Bay which is just North of Seattle. Anything I don't have to take a ferry to oh, I would be willing to help you with some real-time beachcombing. I'm sorry you lost your leg, but there's definitely ways to get you back out there, virtually. Let me know if I can help
I found that very interesting John, what a country we live in, our history must be the envy of the world!! So many interesting facts about Whitby there & you barely scratched the surface!! Lots of life on the shore there too, well done pal!!
- Thanks mate, we have such a rich tapestry of history in our country I have no doubt that we are the envy of most of the civilised world. As you say I barely scratched the surface, but left plenty for another visit ;) Looking forward for the summer. :)
Wow. This one is quite the exploration. ❤
So much to love about Whitby.
Smugglers, and the like lol.
Brilliant episode it really took me back to one of my favourite places.
loved it .
- I am glad you enjoyed it Paul. Best wishes and have a great weekend. :)
Beautiful scenery, engaging combing. What good day. Must have been a memory jogger for you. Cheers
allan powell - It sure was. Strangely everything seemed a lot smaller than I remember?
That was very interesting for sure and you are so lucky growing up there and experience that beautiful place. I grew up on the coast in California in the 60s and it wasn’t that clean at all. I remember so much mercury and tar and diesel fuel. It was very sad.
Geebop Baluba - That is sad. I hope things are better now?
Hi John just watched the whitby video very good so much information keep up the good work john😊
Thank you.
Many Happy memories of boat fishing trips and bacon butties on the boat best fish and chips ever I now live in Canada thanks for sharing

A lovely film. Thank you for sharing your Adventures John. Looks like you had great weather for your break.👍🦀🐟🐚😊
- Thank you very much mate. It might have been sunny but it was blooming cold!! Haha.
Love your video. I live in Cape May County, New Jersey in the United States. We also have a cement shipwreck, the SS Atlantus. It was the 2nd of 12 built during and after WWI.
In 1926 it ran aground 150' off Diamond Beach. That particular beach is covered in small stones instead of typical sand. If you're lucky to find the clear stones, they can be polished, cut, and sometimes are mistaken for real diamonds. It's quite a tourist attraction.
Jane Sannino sounds lovely 😊👍🏻
Great video John really enjoyed it I really love Whitby it's nice to see you in my part of the world you're very knowledgeable on your shells and creatures I finally got out fishing last Sunday only got to flounders but it was better than nothing really enjoyed making a short video of it my first video of 2020 sea fishing keep up the good work John nice to see you on see you on the next episode tight lines for hardcore fisherman
hardcore fisherman - Thank you very much mate and well done for getting out fishing. I haven’t had a good flounder session in a long time. So well done. 👍🏻😉🎣
I am subscribe to a lot of channels on RUclips is a fuel that complain about catching dogfish in Whiting we hear it they say I'd love to catch dogfish and waiting instead of Flanders but well what can you do I'm just the flounder king of Hull don't mind catching flounders like would like to catch them different fish
Love Whitby, one of my most favourite places in England
Peter Woodcock - It is a beautiful place isn’t it. Many happy memories here. 😊🐚🦀🎣
i finally got my dream trip to England last September, but unfortunately time restraints prevented us from visiting Cornwall. I would love to see that area, thank you for the videos
Joe Young - Cornwall and the North Yorkshire coast are some of the most wonderful places I have ever seen on this earth. 😊💙
welcome back to your roots john cornwall's gain is yorkshire's loss but as much as we love god's country i must admit falmouth looks very nice to live and fish. not many people reply to all comments on youtube so you are a star.
news now uk - Thanks mate. Yes the climate and the fishing is much better down where we live now. Although I do till love North Yorkshire. The comments is a big commitment of time and effort but is something I feel makes a difference. I will continue to do it for as long as I can. 😊
Brilliant video as always mate! Whitby is my favourite coastal town always preferred it to Scarborough and other nearby towns and its not a million miles away from Pontefract where I live.
Cheers again John 👍
Much better than Scarborough. 😉🤣
I love your videos. So peaceful. You are so knowledgeable about everything. I love the fact that you give all of us your wealth of knowledge. Just makes me wish I could visit all of these places, run on the beaches, gather everything !!! Looks so wonderful. Do you ever find pearls is all the shellfish you collect ? Thanks so much for making these videos. It gives all of us out here {in our dull little lives } a chance to experience these marvelous little wonders. Almost, not quite, as good as being there. Thanks again.and good luck to your boy . It's a real heart jerker.
- We are simply sharing what we know and love doing. If we all shared what we know, we would all know an awful lot more. :) We don't actually get many pearls. @@TheFishLocker a small world indeed! Not been back for over 40 years. That will have to change. All the best.
RHINO 54 - I don’t know how much of the place you remember but it has become very commercial and tourist heavy. Parking is very difficult.
@@TheFishLocker Unfortunatly that is the case with a lot of places. Sometimes it is better to remember than go to back. We see things differently as children, reality hits us as adults. Great video wor kid. Get along the magpie for some proper fish and chips. Jet was very popular in the Victorian era. It's very collectable.

Mate a fantastic episode, great to see a diferent coast, i love your beach combing episodes. I want to do one here, but the big lows are after dark at the moment, i will have to brush up on species as, your knowledge is iso mpressive. However, You didnt mention the famous chippy in Witby.is that still there last time the queue was around the dock but it was Goth weekend. Something else we can thank Bram Stoker for.
SEA-FISHING with CJ - Haha. I could do a video just on the chip shops in Whitby and it would be an hour long. 😛😆
Found it very interesting! Thanks
Martin Smith hi Martin. Glad you liked it 😊👍🏻
Well you briefly had me fooled! I was thinking when the photo pooped up for the video on my subscribed feeds "Where on earth is that in Cornwall?" !! It was only when I watched the video today that I realised you had gone 'oop North'! Great video John - some of your history, and some rock flippin' from a different area! Good one Mate! ;-)
Trampster not much gets past you mate 😉
I love it here
- It is a nice place to visit. But once you've left you realise how small it is.
