octopus is sooo good, in some part of sicily they simply put it into a thermal pool with hot water after euthanasia. It's hurt me when I was young to kill that animal slapping it on the rocks to soften its meat, and because it's a clever and smart one but, you know, pigs and cows are too. Great findings!
Your octopus is dying right now. A very alive octopus would not be taken like that. He would wrap himself around your arms and try to escape. I have already caught a few octopuses but no one has ever behaved like this

That was a bred female. It would be fine to keep her, she was already dying. They lay eggs and then protect them, not eating anything, ever again actually, when the eggs hatch the mother slowly dies. That's why it had those large wounds.

There is a video of ants getting stuck in the slime of a slug without chance to predate it, but after a while the ants begin to cover the slug with earth to dry, so they could break it apart to feed the colony in a kind of diferent experiment the scientists found that the flowers can solve a maze with their roots when one of the ends of the maze ends in a fertile soil and other end in an poor soil, how inteligent are those living beings or is it instinct.
im thinking the octopus was a female protecting her clutch under the rocks and she was beginning to pass- im going based on the size, inability of camouflaging/ lack of color and overall body deterioration & lack of strength/ will to fight back
In Okinawa a friend and I were working an octopus in about 20' of water. It grabbed him and held him down and near drown him, I had no idea. It was about that size. We ate him, but they can be dangerous in that situation. They're pretty smart. Great day you had :)

I hope that wasn’t a female octopus in her den guarding her eggs. Females commit their lives to protecting them (they won’t leave or feed or anything - they die) till the babies hatch. It seemed very weak and lethargic so that’s why I would suspect that

In 2008 I got cut out at Seymour tower on a spring tide walk. I was like 11 at the time, defiantly listed to Jay when he mentioned the tides. I ended up being rescued by the RNLI in Jersey. Went out today myself foraging and found a nice lobbie. Good video mate love that octopus mate!!
I love octopus and cuttlefish stew and have eaten it in the past. It is a magnificent dish. Trouble is they are so intelligent, and can't be despatched easily that I can't bear to eat them any more. Nice one for letting that octopus go :)

You've got to laugh at some of the octopus 'expert' haters commenting here. 🤦♂️ Anyone who has followed Jay on his foraging ventures knows that he's not only very knowledgeable about the many creatures he encounters but also very conscientious. He tries to leave his foraging environment just the way he found it(turning rocks back over when he's done exploring), doesn't keep undersized animals, only keeps what he needs for a good meal, etc. He's also very humble & down-to-earth. By his own admission, he had never foraged an octopus before. There's a learning curve. The appeal of his foraging ventures into the tidepools & beyond is so that we, the audience watching safely from the comfort of our homes or from under a bridge for you trolls, may learn about & marvel at the fascinating creatures he comes across. He pulls them from their hiding spots to show the camera so that we get to see the animal clearly. He'll then often put the animal right back from where he got it, usually no worse for wear. Had he not pulled the octopus out of its hole, we would have just seen the writhing tentacle. That's it! As many have commented, that octopus did not respond like a healthy specimen & may very well have been on its last days or hours. I believe Jay to be a great steward of the environment in which he forages & fishes. People should be a bit less judgmental. Get to know the creator of this video before you spew your hateful comments. He's got plenty of other videos for you to see what I'm talking about.

Hi from New Zealand. You can cook that whole octopus. By tying a string around it's neck after you remove the tooth. You just put it into boiling water. And eat the whole thing. If you like Marmite then you will be in for a treat. because that is what you get in the head. The whole thing is yummy, for an octopus that big you will need to cook it for a couple of hours. I wish I could just go out and find a lobster where I live. Here they are about $70-$80 per kg (In south eastern Australia). I would have definitely kept that octopus if it was me, they have relatively short life spans. An old one like that might well have been guarding a brood of eggs.

That octopus looks like it had just spawned. After they lay eggs, some species essentially clean themselves to death.
He did use a tool to pry it out of where it was hiding. It’s possible it is. Best to dispose of immediately.

I wish I could just go out and find a lobster where I live. Here they are about $70-$80 per kg (In south eastern Australia). I would have definitely kept that octopus if it was me, they have relatively short life spans. An old one like that might well have been guarding a brood of eggs.
