    Just like what everyone said, amazing job.
    I'm taking my son out on our new canoe tomorrow for the first time. Not sure how I'm going to get it too the water from the car as I'm an amputee, and sadly I'm unable to use my leg. But after watching your videos it's giving me the drive to get out with my lad again.

      Thanks Peter! I hope the canoeing went well today! You can get small folding two-wheeled trolleys for hauling your canoe about - I use one when I’m out in my plastic canoe (which weighs a tonne!!) Atb and happy paddling!

      Thanks Simon, I can safely say I've lost the use of my arms. My lad wasn't really up to that amount of paddling so I ended up mostly doing it lol. I don't even think we managed half way. I was thinking we could manage 9mile in 4 hours but it ended up a lot warmer so it was too much for him. The wheels idea, I was thinking along the same lines so might have to look into it. You make it look too damn easy lol

    This is a beautiful canoe, I canoe a lot in Canada and have a 16 foot Faber Prospector in Yellow Cedar and canvas. Before moving to Canada I lived by the River Derwent in Yorkshire. There is something tranquil about those English backwaters you cannot find in Canada.

      My 20 acre property backs on to Crown Land, mixed forest of Birch, Spruce, Balsam Fir and Aspen. I currently live in a travel trailer (caravan) at 3,500 feet, lots of snow and temps can get down to -30C or lower. Currently we have three Alpha predators to look out for, Black Bear, Cougar and recently Grey Wolves have been seen.

    Beautiful canoe. You must have used tons of string for that braiding on the sits. Most people take a shortcut when it comes to sits. I used ordinary packing cord of polypropylene 20 years ago and they are just as firm and springy today, but it took some paisience. It gives you a special feeling to paddle the rivers and lakes in a selfbuildt canoe or kayak. You forget about all the sanding :)

    Absolutely gorgeous canoe! I discovered your channel a couple of days ago and watched some videos - like your relaxed cool style! I was curious about the canoe you used in the videos so I searched and found this video. Really interesting to learn a bit about the build process even though it's completely beyond my abilities to build one myself.
    I'm interested in canoes though and wonder how a cedar strip canoe compares to a fiberglass one when it comes to weight. I'm aware that there are lots of variables that influence weight, but it would be interesting to know the weight of yours, and also the width.
    I use a similar sized canoe (slightly smaller I guess) from the early eighties. I bought it to be able to handle and paddle alone and sit backwards on the front seat like you do. I've found that mine handles better empty (or almost empty) if I add some weight to keep the front (actually the back) down. Used to use stones, but they can be hard to find in the right size so now I use a water jug. Around ten liters help a lot on balance when I place it as far from the middle as possible.

    Hi Simon, thanks for a great video, again. I had already seen your canoe in a later (published) video, and now I found your earlier making and using it video. Wow this is a gorgeous canoe, since watching your first video (well the first video of yours that I watched, which was My 5 favourite bushcraft items, or some name similar to that) I have ordered a couple of canoe books, the one you mentioned by Gil Gilpatrick, and another called Canoecraft: An Illustrated Guide to Fine Woodstrip Construction, by Ted Moores. I am hoping between these two books and Sifu RUclips I will be able to have a good go at making a decent canoe. I did some woodwork at high school..a very long time ago ( I am 51 now lol ) and my background now is electrical, electronics, instrumentation, computers and coding, programming. Not related to working with wood at all... lol. However, I will post you a link when I have finished my little canoe. For me, the biggest enjoyment I will have is taking my kids out on a handmade canoe.

      Go for it! It’s a very enjoyable thing to build and you’ll have that wonderful smug feeling of pride whenever you paddle it down the river! Jason Eke on RUclips is worth a watch, he has a series on cedar strip canoe building - lots of good information and inspiration! Good luck and thank you!

    That is an amazing build I won't keep up in my inflatable. I wish my car could carry one. I might have to scrounge a lift mate as I would never have gotten by that tree.

      Cheers Carl, it was a tight squeeze! You’d probably have been okay in your inflatable, but if not, at least it’s light to carry around! 👍

      Simon, a bloke in the woods I could pretty much guarantee I would be swimming back. That's why I haven't been to open in my navigating waterways yet... don't get how you only paddle on one side and don't just go around in circles yet....! 😁

    Quality build. The finish is amazing. Where did you get your cedar strip from?
    Thanks

      Thank you! I got the cedar through my local builders merchants - it wasn’t the best quality - lots of knots, that I had to cut out - the strips ended up being short in length and I had to splice them - it was cheap though! 😁👍

    What a great job Simon. May we know where you got the cedar wood from? Did it come with a bead & cove profile or did you do that yourself?

    • @simonablokeinthewoods
      @simonablokeinthewoods  5 лет назад +1

      Hi Chris and thank you! I got the cedar from work - we had a load of cedar feather-edge boarding left over from a cladding job - it wasn’t the cleanest stuff - lots of knots! I cut it up and planed/thicknessed it to size, cut the knot sections out and machined the cove and bead using a router and router table. It was more work and some of the sections were short, but it only cost me my time and the cutters for the mouldings (I’m just a cheap-skate haha!) Atb, Simon

    Having a large helping of canoe envy, I have made the decision to take the plunge(poor word selection maybe).
    Was thinking of pine over "exotic" cedar mainly for price. Any reasons why this would be a bad choice?
    I was also wondering if there are any hoops to jump through legally in the UK or is it simply a case of build it and paddle?

    • @simonablokeinthewoods
      @simonablokeinthewoods  4 года назад +1

      Hi Paul, no loops, no regulations, just build it and go (you do need a licence to paddle most inland waterways - joining the BCU gets you a licence)
      The downside of using pine is the weight - cedar is very light, pine is heavy. But is cost is prohibitive, might be the way to go - just make sure it’s super dry kiln dried, so it doesn’t shrink! And get yourself a trolley to carry it! 😁👍🛶

      I’m a hopeless fisherman haha! I’m hoping to do a bit of trout fishing in Sweden in a few weeks time - I don’t hold out much hope!!

      Simon, a bloke in the woods give it a try mate its easier that you think, hook, worm and rod cast out in front of the canoe leave it there and wait a little bit and when you catch a fish you will be hooked for good, self taught fishing makes the best fisherman.

    I don't know if swans are protected.But my wife and I were confronted by an angry flock of geese in a narrow driveway and I quietly said to my they obviously don't how delicious they are roasted.Immediately they fled.

      Hahaha! A good trick - I’ll try that next time I get harassed by a swan!! It’s a shame they are protected - meant to be delicious!! Cheers, Simon.
