Ration Packs - Chinese PLA Military Ration, Menu 18.

- In this video, I am out at a favourite spot by the river to try another ration pack from around the world - this time a Chinese PLA Military one, menu 18.
I love a ration pack, always have and find them exciting to open and see what’s inside - this ration pack didn’t disappoint, especially as I wasn’t able to read the Chinese information on the outer packaging.
Sadly, the ration heaters included didn’t work, but this was not surprising as the ration pack was several years out of date. In my experience, military ration packs have a very long shelf life - often years longer than the specified date, however, I don’t advise anyone to eat out of date food, this was a choice I made and I accepted the risk.
I hope you enjoy the video.
Thanks for watching.

Simon always delivers - please keep this mini ration pack series going - really interesting how different the food and motivation/comforts elements are. As they say, an army marches on it stomach - maybe there'll end up being a correlation between the ration pack offerings and the success of each country's army.
Ration packs are why armies have field kitchens. 😂
You've heard of steve1984 right? Not that I don't enjoy Simon's perspective but analysing rations on YT has definitely been done.
@@DonP_is_lostagain the field feeding system, and MRE type rations are completely two different types of rations and both have their place in the battlefield.
@@tcschenks it was a joke.
@@mrwes100 I'm aware of that having spent 22 years in service. It was a joke.
As a Chinese, it's interesting to see you guess what the words on the packaging mean. The '18' means model of 2018 , '餐谱3' means menu number three, and 690 grams.
If that had been me, one of the meals would have been pork fried rice and the other rice pudding and I wouldn't have known until I mixed them and eaten some. I would then have grabbed the lemon drink, only to discover, after a big swig, that it was lemon scented hand sanitizer. You are much braver than I am, Simon. Love your videos. That pack-raft looks like such fun. Thank you for what you do.
Nothing like the taste of Hand Sanitizer!! Lol!! J/ k Gail
Alcohol sanitizer is the ultimate survival aperitif,,😂
Yeah some bravery there!
Another fantastic vid Simon on the MRE theme. I had to rewatch with Google Translate to see what they were. Turns out 1st line is 'M9 food', next is 'Net content specification 690G', next is '18 Lu Qin self heating food', next line it kept changing what it was, next is 'Recipe 3' and lastly is 'Century Fusion (Beijing) Technology Development Co, Ltd'. After opening spoon/napkin the packet said 'crispy cucumber'. Top pouch in the mess tin was 'Curry chicken 3 rice' and the 1st pouch you opened when boiled was 'Beef fried rice'. You must have been well full after 2 rice portions but think of the energy you get then for paddling. Looking forward to the next vid, especially MRE one.
Thanks Chris! 👍👍
This is odd. I just finished watching the video and now I feel I could watch it again. 😉🙂👍
Can't wait for the Klingon ration pack episode! 🤣
Given what the Love Scene From Romeo and Juliet sounds like in Klingon, I truely DO NOT want to taste any Klingon MREs...
Love the ration pack videos. Always so interesting to see what is in them. And always so entertaining to spend time watching Simon in the woods! Thank you for sharing with us! Until next time, take care and be safe out there! 😊😊👍👍🙏🙏
This was enjoyable to watch! I really like you combining the MREs and traveling. Its fun to see the strange MREs from other countries and fantastic editing as always!
I love the way he turns a ration pack tasting into a boat trip.
I really enjoy seeing what is in ration packs. Thanks for these videos.
So pleased you are still doing these, not even watched yet but I know it will be a good watch. Thanks for sharing.
Great fun. Thank you Simon.
Excellent video. I always enjoy your videos and look forward to the next one.
Cracking, I love these videos.
I think it's possible that the 'lemon water' was actually an electrolyte drink. That could be why there wasn't two. The electrolyte powder drinks I have say only one per day.
From Australia. Who would have thought that a Chinese Ration Pack would have the instructions in Chinese, simply amazing.
Great entertainment, love watching. Thanks❤❤
Thanks for doing these reviews
Big like my friend. Watching from Arkansas 👍🏻👍🏻🙏🏻
I have never tried ration packs but this has definitely got me thinking to look into it! Looks great! 😁
It was a good fun to watch it-as always ! Especially that this Chinese pack was like a 😊suprise meal
I love these ration pack videos, i have always wanted to try them
I just found this channel and man have I been missing out on some good information! Ill be going over your camping videos over the next few days. Thanks for your time and effort!
Great video. Your content is slways spot on and really entertaining
I’m really enjoying the ration pack review vids.
Long term subba here! Genuine inspiration for me starting my own little channel with my young daughter all things out in the great outdoors. Love your integrity and down to earth nature and content - top draw as usual 👍👌
Another cracking video Simon thanks for sharing 👍 👏
Another great vlog Simon 👍🏻👍🏻
Friday night, had a beer or two, checked utube and was genuinely excited to see Simon having a munch on a Chinese ration pack! You've got a captive audience mate, love the ration pack comparisons.
Thanks for guessing and testing this MRE! Definately two main rice-based meals there. Chillie sauce and pickles make it palatable!
Love the raft. I’m so used to seeing you in your canoe that you built. Absolutely awesome canoe. Thanks for the videos. Always look forward to Wednesday’s video.
BOOM!! Always a great moment when Simon posts a new video 😁😁 loving the ration pack series to 👌
I was thinking the same about the translation app, but it was entertaining watching you figure it all out Simon
Brave of you Simon, to try that one. I think you’re right about it being two meals! Thanks for trying it for us! You can’t beat those little BCB stoves. I always carry one in my edc with 3 gel packs. Just in case! In fact I have one in my ‘get me out of trouble’ kit that lives in my pick up. 🤭.
The pack raft bit and showing what supplies you brought just in case, and eating on our favourite island in the river, made this way better than an at-home ration pack test like so many channels do. Steve1989 excepted of course.
I love a ration pack video, keep them coming!
This ration pack was exciting not know what was in it! Always a great vid thanks Simon.
Awesome, Simon! 👍😎🇨🇦💫
I enjoyed ur ration video, thanks..
Great stuff! ❤
Short and crisp vdo. Great👍🏻
Good ration review , thanks for sharing , God bless !
Really love the ration pack series 👍
Me 2 !!!!
Love the ration pack videos! I must say that you are quite courageous to dive into a ration pack with all contents and instructions in Chinese! Looking forward to the next one! ATB
It was lovely! To be honest, I wasn’t worried about what the dishes might have been, I enjoy all Chinese food 😁
Sitting here at eating lunch wondering weather you had a new video as I guessed you do.But I have to say you’re a braver man than me.Can’t wait for the next ration review
Excellent review Sir Simon 🫡✊🏼🧐! Keep them coming brother. Cheers from across the pond California 🇺🇸 👊🏼😎🤙🏼
Enjoyed this, Do More of them.
You're a "Brave bloke" to dive in to a "Mystery meal", but what good is a sense of adventure if you don't exercise it🙂🙂 Great MRE series, you can learn a good bit about a culture by way they eat .. Cheers.
Good fun. I enjoyed that :)
Fun stuff Simon!
I like these, there are a lot of ration-vids, and Steve MRE is fun to watch but so are you, especially when you're going out in the raft and making a morning out of it.
Cheers, Mike from Canada.
Might not be the tastiest rat pack you’ve had so far, but this series is up there with my fave vids that you do. I find it very interesting to see what the other countries armed forces get to eat, and compare it to out own packs. Keep up the good work.
Love that pack raft matey! Was craving some of your river wissey style simpler camps. Love the epic ones too of course, but I do enjoy a simple camp, cook and maybe a lil splash on the water.
Interesting video. I’ve wondered what was in ration packs from other countries. This is an interesting series.
Very nice
You're a much braver man than I sir. Eating all of that without knowing what is was. Great stuff.
Congrats on the new pack raft, like the color. That'll make the portages easier
Ration review. Yes! 👍
Very interesting
Yes I think it was two meals THANKS for sharing
That looks tasty and delicious.
Never saw one of them before - Thanks Simon. Be well.😉
I’d be a bit disgruntled at 2 rice dishes on the same day but it did look good. Without knowing what was what and at how hardcore the Chinese military often portray themselves as being I found myself laughing, imagining a ‘what if’ scenario where the weak lemon drink was a “Bolivian marching powder” based product to get one battle ready… “I’m off now to row like the clappers!” 😂
Wonderful video. Fun to watch. Your a brave man . Thanks. Nice paddling also. Just a short paddle to "Toad Hall" .
I do love a good ration pack 👍 you should try Google lens on your mobile to translate some info 👍 great videos as always. I'm on a binge watch tonight lol
The calories you got from the ration pack was likely enough to get you back home, my friend. That looked like a lot of carbs, honestly, but an army runs on its stomach.
Thank you for another great video. I look forward to you getting the Baker tent back out for another episode. I very much admired that tent, as well as the fact you made it yourself. Well done, sir. Well done.
I paused the vid and used google translate (great minds think alike). Good on you for launching into what looked like a tasty meal with enthusiasm.
VERY interesting video at least you were full and the meal looked tastey Simon
Cool video.
The ration pack looked pretty good. What impressed me more was how small your raft and stuff packed down wow!
Loved the logical breakdown. Such a foreign MRE....
Super interesting. Had no idea this market existed.
❤❤❤it was good video thanks for your video see you soon
Lets get this out onto a pack raft. Nice. 😆
I see what you did there
Definitely don't want a raft hiss though 😬
Love that channel Steve1989MREinfo, especially when he sparks up a 60 or 70 year cigarette! 😂
Thank you , Simon .
🐺 Loupis Canis .
That would be funny if the tea turned out to be gelatin. Enjoy these videos. Thanks
Hi Simon, tricky canoe trip there, and good looking rice dishes, if maybe quite a lot of it (!) We're currently checking out some of your earlier uploads again, so cheering. Best wishes. J&A&B&T
Like to see some more bakers tent camping!! Great setup!!
I've had the Chinese ration pack menu 18 it's quite nice like your inflatable binghy thanks Simon for a great video 👍 👏
不错。这包看起来很好吃🍻
A good series Simon. They looked tasty but simple. Does the job is good enough in the Chinese military clearly.
Best wishes
Al
the new ready-to-eat Chinese ration packs are in silver foil containers with white cardboard lids in a white plastic bag, they can be bought in every city town village and hamlet in the UK
As my Grandfather liked to say , "What doesn't kill, fattens."
I also recall the old HSBC advert, that gave us the little titbit of info, that it is considered polite in Chinese society, to leave a tiny morsel of food from your meal, so that your host can see that you are satisfied with what they have provided for you.
Remarkably deft of you do so, considering your now global audience.
A well mannered English man is the measure of any Prince.
Surely it should have been " Simon a bloke with chopsticks". Nice fun video.
Rice, very nice 👍
Love the way you wield those paddles, Simon, especially coming into the bank. Awesome. Brave man... and no reward. No sweets, no hot chocolate. I hope you went home to a huge bowl of bread and butter pudding. ATB from Western Australia.
Good to see another sandgroper enjoying Simons videos.
Oi oi oi
Mess tin.. "the old fashion way" 😂😂 half the military still do it that way 😂😂 great video as always
Always loved rat packs, only ever had British Army ones though. I'd love to try some from other countries - this series is great!
More on the water than in the woods lately mate, and that's not a complaint. So look forward to your incredible vids. Wearing my 'Bloke in the Woods' T. shirts with much pride.
Thx. Looks like you got your fill of carbs for the year.
Thanks Simon, great relaxer as always =) Bit too heavy on the rice for my tastes, this one. But after having had some of the more experimental and lavish western ones, I think in the field sometimes a spartan meal that does the job is better than an experiment gone bad. =)
very interesting seeing what soldiers eat across the world
are 2 meals in the pack for sure. For keep you all day long. You have to try Brazil army ration pack. Its diferent of everything you have tryied so far
Love the Ration Pack videos, Si, keep them coming. I must admit, though, this one, looked pretty grim, to be honest.
Simon, a bloke in the woods, 'rice-ing' to the occasion once again! 😁👍
Brilliant, (doing my best as an American to imitate hehehe) going from walking the plank to Captaining his own craft. awesome.
Howdy from Texas Simon ! We just love you to death, always wonderful videos 👍👍🍺
Greetings from the other side of this gem we've FUBAR
Thanks for da post
Here in the state in Minnesota we have wild rice harvested by the Ojibwa indigenous people's. So yummy mixed with a white type of rice. Another favorite is barley onion mushrooms water chestnuts butter and beef broth thing.... Thanks interesting for sure.
I enjoyed this video as always!!! Thank you Simon!!! By the way, where has Andy been? I have not seen him in a few weeks (Kent Survival). Cheers mate!!!
