I have oily skin and the only thing I don’t use is primer in make up prep and everything else I use in moderation. If I notice I’ve used too much moisturiser, I wipe it off. I could not sacrifice all the other steps because since I started paying more attention to skin care, my skin looks better, my makeup looks better although I don’t need so much product anymore (literally half a pump of foundation) which also helps and if I need my makeup to last, a bit of powder seems to help, and removing the excess oils with a sheet of loo paper in the afternoon.

I am so glad you did a video on this Wayne. I sort of discovered this by accident. I was in a rush and just used my sunscreen one morning and then applied my makeup and throughout the day, I noticed how nice and fresh my makeup stayed with me. So...I did the same the next day and again...my makeup looked great! I attributed it to the lack of the moisturizer and primer and you're right, my foundation would slip away from my chin..forehead...and nose by noon. So now I just skip it all as you've mentioned here and keep my moisturizer for my evening routine and as for the primers, I only use them on special occasions like when I know my makeup only needs to look great for a few hours tops.
    Much love from Tennessee!

The reason people with high sun exposure are healthier is probably because those people do more walking, running, hiking etc. It’s important to be aware that cause and effect isn’t always linear and obvious. In this instance it’s more probable that the sun exposure should be thought of as a side effect of being outdoors and active rather than causing the increase in health.

    • @reneegaskin7060

Sunblock absolutely necessary in NZ, sunny or not, due to ozone hole above. NZ has high rates of skin cancers & melanoma

You truly are the voice of reason for giving good face. I have extremely oily skin still at age 55. And I am someone who has been trying to achieve makeup perfection since about age 9, the struggle is real. Over the years I have by trial & error, and personal experience figured out what works for me. 1) I something that treats my oily skin, and primers (face, eye, under eye, and lash). No moisturizers 2) my sunscreen is always built into my must use products. 3) a tip s learned recently from the great Wayne Goss, blot between layers of prep products. 4) find the products that work best for you (not easy, but achievable) I have my Holy Grails, and sometimes one gets replaced by something new and improved. With that being said I also have some products that have been with me for years. 5) As time has gone by, I have achieved 8 hour wear time easily, this has increased from previous 6 hours ( if lucky) 6) Truly be selective on who you follow. Mr Goss I appreciate your honesty, kindness, and professional knowledge!

The best tip I ever got was from Wayne years ago, & I’ve been using it ever since. I take Scott Tissue (specifically this brand bcz there’s no lint) & pull apart the 2 layers & I use 1 layer to blot my skin. I lay it down across my forehead, chin & nose after applying foundation, after makeup is complete or also to address & thwart any oil breakthrough throughout the day. THIS WORKS SO WELL & is great in conjunction with touch-ups & blotting w/powder too. JUST TRY IT! You’ll see 😉💜💚

I had never used a primer until recently and yes, it does allow for an absolutely beautiful base for foundation; the application of such is so much nicer than without it. Moisturizers (even the best products) often feel ‘tacky’ to me, making the application of foundation uneven. I’ve found as I’ve gotten older that ‘less is more’ so using a primer only ( and a touch of eye cream) is all I need underneath foundation to avoid ‘slippery buildup’ that causes a shorter ‘shelf life’ for the daily application of make-up and mascara. I’d love to see you make a video on serums-especially vitamin formulations…

The study done on skin exposure that Wayne mentioned in this video reminded me of my unrelenting mission to explain the difference between causation and correlation. People with higher exposure to sun being healthier is probably a correlation, as this means they are more likely to spend more time outside-not sitting on the couch-which causes the increased health. NOT the exposure to sun, in and of itself. But that physical activity outdoors increases exposure to the sun AND increases health.

This is very true. I have combination skin and when I layer a lot of skincare before makeup, my base makeup does not look even. If you still want to layer some serum or moisturizer before foundation, I would recommend using a cotton pad and non sticky toner to wipe your face before putting on the foundation.

I'm pretty dry and in my late sixties. I flatly refuse to do without my peptide and Vitamin C serums in the morning. My tactic: I do my morning skincare with serums and sunscreen. I take a break. I goo eat breakfast, get dressed, whatever. I allow 10 to 15 minutes for everything to sink in. Put on primer (Yes, Virginia, your sunscreen is still effective when you layer other products on top). THEN do makeup and POWDER. So many women refuse to powder for fear of looking too matte, or dry, or cakey. But with the right powder (slightly luminous) you can get a terrific natural youthful finish on the skin. Love your channel, Wayne. Keep up the good work. 😍

I have dry skin and use hydroquinone and tretinoin regularly. Thanks wayne again for educating us. I definitely noticed this to be true. I have a Korean skin care routine and I've noticed that I cannot use hyaluronic acid or oils before putting on makeup. Kind of drives me crazy but another thing that helps is also just taking time between your skin care steps. And find a moisturizer that has a sunscreen in it.

I stumbled upon a similar approach a while ago. I have very oily skin and oxidation, along with mid afternoon oily shine and makeup sliding off, were consistent problems. While staying home during the COVID lockdowns, my morning skincare routine shrank to Vitamin C, a BHA, and Elta MD Clear sunscreen. I was surprised that my foundation didn’t oxidize or slip with this truncated routine, once I started using it again. It didn’t matter whether I used liquid, gel or cushion foundation…it stayed put. Such a thrill! Thanks so much for this video, as well as all your many kindnesses.

I meant to mention that, if the weather is more temperate (not in the F.90’s with 90% humidity), the sunscreen by Tatcha, 35 spf, is an excellent partner to foundation and works astonishingly like Tatcha’s liquid primer. Pores and other texture are camouflaged well. The downsides are the lower spf and that it takes a minimum of 15 minutes to settle in and dry properly.

I completely agree with you. I find that too many skincare products underneath makeup also causes extreme pilling. I prep my skin with a mist of water followed by a light weight moisturizer with hyaluronic, but only if I can give myself 45 minutes before makeup application. My CC Cream already has SPF built in, but I do use a separate sunscreen on my ears, neck and decollete -exposed areas that will not be covered by my CC Cream.

I just turned 45 years this past July, and I never really used sunscreen on my face, except for real hot days. Or vacaying in Texas, cuz that heat is a whole nother story, LOL.
Anyways, during this whole pandemic, I've been taking care of my skin, paying attention to what my skin needs. I'm not trying to stand on a soap box, or point a finger, but not ever using sunscreen, unless it is already in the product your using, is so bad for your skin. Please try to incorporate sunscreen, somewhere within your skin care regimen, coming from one mature woman to another. 😉

I’ve learned that pretty much all of these are considered “primers”. So I’d choose the spf as primer, since that one is crucial. My skincare have also made my skin so nice, that I only need mascara and a brow fix, maybe a little concealer.
I feel uncomfortable 🥵 with too many layers of makeup anyway 🤷🏻‍♀️

    • @wendigo1919

100% Most people don't need labelled "primers". Some do... to mattify, to smooth texture, perhaps. But really, if they work on their skin, they won't need these primers generally speaking. Great makeup starts with great skin. A daily skincare routine is so important.
