Hey Dereck !!! Excellent You Tube series!! You say you were right there - you were "not late" to the scene. Me too. I remember picking up Pale Saints, Slowdive, Ride, Lush, etc. etc. back around 91-93 and have never looked back! Just saw Slowdive in Toronto the other night, just unbelievable still after all these years (saw them open up for Catherine Wheel in '93 and never thought they'd reunite - thought Rachel had some permanent ear damage or something - so glad she can still kick it!!!!)
From 1988 to 1992, UK have a very diverse range of indie music from jangly, shoegaze, tweepop, baggy, rave to indie dance crossover. Labels from Factory, Sarah, Creation, Lazy to Too Pure. What a memory, man wish I could revisit those times again.
Pale Saints - Thread Of Light! My favourite tune from that album! You mentioned Swervedriver! The drummer from that band stayed just over the street from me haha, he was a cool guy!
I truthfully was unwittingly drooling during this video the first time I watched it. I'm back on another shoegaze kick and there are just so many artists here that I simply have not heard of. Thanks again for uploading these, Dereck!
You should definitely do some more shoegaze videos! You helped me out tremendously with your first shoegaze video recommendation with For Against. Their song "Love You" is easily climbing the ranks to one of my favorite songs. Love your videos, man! Consider more shoegaze in the future!
It was such a scene that kinda defied genre. Look at how it fragmented and became more of an underground club scene that morphed into the 'Rave' culture that made its way back to us in the form of techno music...'Rave' being a term derived from the 60's 'Rave-Up' which harkens back to the original 60's acid parties...The Happy Mondays come to mind...the psychedelic aspect, light shows extended remixes very creative and influential time for music the 80's. UK
Yes, Stone Roses are Baggy. This was started mainly up in Manchester in the early rave days and refers to the clothing associated with the music. Saw Ride here in London at Camden Palace in 1993. As well as referring to Shoe Gazing as a style, my daughter calls this general style Etherial Grunge. I think along with the sound, Shoe Gazing is an attitude. There was usually no rock posturing or macho gestures. Just staring at the floor making a huge sound.
That song is "Ordeal", 2nd song on first side of "In Ribbons" Always loved Pale Saints since day one, but stick to "The Comforts of Madness" and "In Ribbons". When Ian Masters left the band, they were never the same - "Slow Bulidings" has a couple OK songs, but first two albums are classic!!
i really like your videos and insight. I've edited my comment because i prematurely assumed the rest. thank you for sharing those albums ive never seen.
Shoegazing music influences my own musical output. Playing along with Lush, Pale Saints and Swervedriver albums to learn how to play bass and guitar. btw I am a HUGE fan of the Baggy/Madchester sounds as well.
Check out Medicine's debut "Shot Forth Self Living". It is superb American shoegaze. You may like Santa Cruz, CA's Bethany Curve. It is more California shoegaze.
Man, I wish you were my neighbor or something growing up as a kid. Seems like you have a great amount of knowledge on music, also and that fact that you have a kick ass shoegaze collection! Thank you for the videos! Definitely learned of a few bands I'll have to listen to!
The Stone Roses are one of the greatest bands !!! - can't wait for the documentary about their reunion to come out - I consider them one of the bands who started the sound that would later be called "shoegaze" ... Am I wrong about that? Doesn't matter I guess lol - their music is just extraordinary
Ever listen to the band Revolver? Fronted by an American singer that was living over in the UK @ the time it all took place.. Do see the influence of the Chameleons on all those bands? I'd add early Verve into the list as well.
Dereck, I'd fully recommend you check out early 90s Detroit shoegazers Majesty Crush if you don't know them, they were a great group with the Shoegaze British sound, highly overlooked Detroit group, they were a multi-cultural group playing shoegaze music..... also what's your thoughts on bands like Spacemen 3 and Loop??
hey Dereck. got any Should? Early 90s U.S. shoegaze. hadn't heard of them until recently when captured tracks rereleased their LP, A Folding Sieve. Really lovely stuff. reckon it'd be right up your street. I think they may have gone under the name Shift at some stage if memory serves me correctly
When it comes to this genre, a lot of people haven't heard of Koolaid Electric Company, especially a track called " Untitled " , it's been on RUclips quite some time now, check it out.
Also, Whirr has improved since they booted the old vocalist. She just didn't have enough presence; the music enveloped her too much and it seemed like she just followed along. Plus she sounded like a child. Anyway, "Sway" was better by leaps and bounds. It's less repetitive and has more variance...
Dereck check out grave babies-over and under ground its modern pinkish shoegazing I think you'll like it,its amazing. I've come to the conclusion the Sundays were more dream pop and not shoegaze but they came close lol.
though i understand your objections to getting genre-specific, instead of judging a band by it's merrits i do think there is something to be said for good jargon for us music nerds. the minute i heard of the term blackgaze (black metal/shoegaze) or stonegaze (stoner/shoegaze) i head an instant impression of what to expect. now there are obviously good and bad bands within every genre, but it gives me a good indication what direction the music is taking and if it is worth checking out.

Watching this years later..great video showcasing great music and Dereck really on form here. Love this.

Dereck, can we hang out during the apocalypse? Would love to listen to your collection when shtf.
Dude - your music collection makes me drool....
Great video, cant believe that I didn’t get recommended this 11 years ago!😂

That loveless vinyl made me kinda cry a little... I want it so bad
I found your siouxsie and the Banshees video, now shoegaze , I like your taste, subscribed.
Bowery electric are the bomb.. they should be more known, I think they did 3/4 albums max.. all of them top noch ambient/post rock/drony goodness

'Just staring at the floor, making a HUGE sound". Great description
Man oh man. You introduce me to so much new music, and I truly appreciate that.
"Floating into the Night" by Julee Cruise is one of my personal favourite shoegaze/dream pop records. (basically the Twin Peaks soundtrack)
My Bloody Valentine on Creation i wish I can run in to it diggin. Great Video Dereck on Shoegazin'
That song is "Ordeal", 2nd song on first side of "In Ribbons"

I envy your collection so much, man. Would love to hear your opinion on some Post-Rock
Derek you probably know about them, but one of my favorite shoegaze bands are 7 Percent Solution. Good stuff.

gotta love Seefeel!
thanks for spreading the knowledge! great taste in music.
I used to have most of those Pale Saints albums....but then I sold them in the late 90s. Damn financial difficulties...
good stuff, love this guy.
Mojave 3 debut was a bit of a crossover with slowdive, but changed over time with a more folk and less reverb surroundings. great taste by the way.
Will give Should a listen. I remember Shift.
Be sure to check out "Junebouvier" by Whirr, and "Lightstrands" by Readymade. Excellent examples of shoegaze from the current "newgaze" era.
If you like Shoegaze, check out Sunny Day in Glasgow. so good
Dereck, I'd fully recommend you check out early 90s Detroit shoegazers Majesty Crush if you don't know them, they were a great group with the Shoegaze British sound, highly overlooked Detroit group, they were a multi-cultural group playing shoegaze music..... also what's your thoughts on bands like Spacemen 3 and Loop??
Majesty Crush is familiar to me. I have Loop and Spacemen 3. Loop is more my taste. Spacemen 3 and the Spiritualized camp bore me.
i second majesty crush. great bass.

hi Derek you might like
M83 dead cities, red seas & lost ghosts album
Great music. Wich is the name of the song in the back?
Also, Whirr has improved since they booted the old vocalist. She just didn't have enough presence; the music enveloped her too much and it seemed like she just followed along. Plus she sounded like a child.
Anyway, "Sway" was better by leaps and bounds. It's less repetitive and has more variance...
check out "coaltar of the deepers"
Good observation, music constantly morphing.
Dereck check out grave babies-over and under ground its modern pinkish shoegazing I think you'll like it,its amazing.

yes pliz do a segment on DreamPOP...
Throwing Back the Apple.

Amen to that Doug!
Loveless on vinyl?! Been looking for that for years.
Have you heard of the French shoegazing band called Alcest, they are great?
and of course, no shoegaze without ar kane
I never considered any of these bands to be 'Shoegaze' that term came about later as well as the term Britpop.
I love pale saints true shoegaze, but stone roses are baggy like the happy Mondays, what would you say about the Sundays I could put them in shoegazing.
Wise.
What is the name of the song that is playing at the beginning of your video?
Pale Saints - Throwing Back the Apple.
Thanks Dereck!
Try Washed Out - Within and Without.
whats the track at 5:20? cool videos? anyone who recognizes Ride is A-OK with me.
Remember loop? They were good
Pale Saint's vocalist has a sugary/sweet tone; it would be nice if at had a little more raw edge to it...
i like Ian Master's voice.
