For me, Jaki is one of The Masters of drumming and had a big influence on us.

Jaki was my drumming hero, I was going to see him perform with the 'Can project' in April, not anymore though. He died on my mum's birthday who died last year. This is all very devastating for me.

I love all the German stuff. In college everybody was listening to R&b stuff, while I was listening to 60's psych, and Krautrock. Favourite German stuff would have to be Neu!, Can, Harmonia, Cluster, La Dusseldorf and probably Faust.

Jaki Liebezeit was my favorite too. Phil Collins in Genesis, Bill Buford in King Crimson and Yes, and Steve Jensen in Japan would be my all time favorites. Drummers like these get inside me and help me to feel life with new vigor. It feels like their rhythms teach me to walk again. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and feelings about drumming.

Great drummer and musician. I saw him play live with Jah Wobble and Harold Budd in the band Solaris. It was the most incredible gig of my life. It was a smallish venue and Jaki's beats and Wobble's bass just raised the roof. Nice tribute, thanks.

I love his drumming and he's one of the reasons why Can is a fantastic, groovy and highly inspiring band in rock music. Big fan of Can and I'll be playing Tago Mago for Jaki. One of Germany's greatest bands ever. I was so speechless and I couldn't stop being shocked by it.

Thanks so much for this. I was a Can fan in the 70's as a kid. My awesome art teacher let me play the Soon Over Babaluma record in class. When my daughter passed on in 2001, his drums got me through it. I'd listen on headphones over and over. I wish to god now I'd contacted him and told him how much that meant to me. If God wills it, I will someday.

I'm just immensely grateful for this man's drumming and was lucky enough to see him live on the Tago Mago tour in Leeds, Bournemouth Saw Delight tour and with Jah wobble, Haorold Budd, Bill Laswell et al in leeds. I think what sets his playing apart is that he seems to be running off the master clock of the cosmos without an ego in the way, taking the listener to a place where time itself stands still. Three cheers with a cherry on the top. Thanks for the impassioned eulogy Derek.

NOBODY could lay down a groove like Jaki, so incredibly funky (listening to 'Tango Whiskeyman' at the moment). And if there ever was a drummer who didn't need a click track... absolutely insane! One of my favourite drummers; one of my favourite bands. RIP Jaki.

Not only does cans albums show jakis amazing drumming ability so does his earlier work in free jazz in the mid 60s. I'm only 19 and and I'm a huge fan of can and other krautrock bands. I like obscure 70s stuff and brian eno as well. I'm sad to hear his passing. RIP to the greatest drummer ever.
Jaki also shows off complex drumming techniques in Brian Enos Before and After Science 1977.
A little off topic but I love your channel and I'm glad to find a person who enjoys krautrock as much as me and who has a passion in general for good music.

Thank you very much for your true words full of love for Jaki. Yes, he was one of the greatest. Not only as a musician also as an kind, relyable, warm and humorous human beeing and a great teacher. I had the great privilege to play with him in a band called "club off chaos" for something around 7 years. As beiing a proffsionaly trained composer I'm honest that I learned whats music is about only from Jaki. I'll miss him deeply....

Jaki Liebziet had a great feel....I like drummers who have their own groove their own style. His drumming had such personality. He shimmered kind of like a mirage or heat haze seen from a distance on a summer day.......a really good vibration.

I was very late to discover CAN and slowly the genius of the band consumed me. It was Jaki's drumming that hooked me in. I have to say he is up there with the greats and it's a shame that so many people never heard of him.

  • @davehamilton-smith9460

Very sad about this. In late 2015 he and Hans-Joachim Irmler toured as a duo and came to the UK playing very small venues. Managed to get a ticket before it sold out. Jaki played a small kit in a very minimal style, was almost surreal seeing him so close, on a stage I'd played myself several times. At some point he threw in a fill that reminded me of Can, and it suddenly hit me who I was seeing. There was a lot of noise and chatter in the audience, which I could tell was annoying both of them a bit throughout. But at the end of their set (which was fantastic, as if I needed to say) Jaki looked up and smiled for the first time all night. I suppose they both realised it had been a good performance. I won't forget it.

I discovered Can in 2010 on RUclips: Below This Level from Rite Time, and my God I was blown away. No frills, but something complex with his drumming stuck instantly, then I discovered the rest. I found out in 2013 he was in my hometown, 10 mins from where I live, in 2011. It still hurts like hell that I missed it and I was heartbroken when he died! No regrets they say but I literally cannot get over missing him play with Drums Off Chaos. Jaki, your music will live forever. R.I.P!!

I really appreciate your high accolades of Jaki Liebezeit's drumming. To be mentioned in the same sentence as Tony Williams, Jack DeJohnette, etc., is no small achievement. He had a unique voice and had something original to say on the kit. I am still blown away by Halleluwah every single time. As a drummer, I wish he had more recognition in the drumming community.

My brother has the good fortune of being friends and working with Holger from Can and to quote Mr Czukay he said when Jaki found the beat he was looking for and felt the groove he would play it until he died with it, often jamming until tape ran out during recording sessions! A testament to a unique artist and incredible drummer.

I am stunned to find out that he passed . i was looking for him behind his Sonor Drumset that i remember from a poster that i had in my drum room when i was maybe 15 or so. You're right is in on top of the list of influential musicians . I am 54 now and our heroes are slowly leaving . IT SUCKS

Thank you for such a heartfelt and insightful post.
I agree with most of your comments and would like to share with you what a Can concert was like.
Saw them at Leeds university in the early 70s...they always caught my ear,but live. WOW.
it wasn't the volume, but the intense prehistoric feel. Some idiot set off a fire alarm and the band slowed and quietened until they played along with the bell, then annihilated the audience with a runaway train performance.
    Unique drummer and band.

Lovely tribute. Can have not been a part of my life like they have yours...but I appreciate how you feel. Although Bowie was a huge loss and I love him, the last time I really choked up and cried at the loss of a musician was when George Harrison died. It was like losing an uncle. When Paul dies (my least favourite Beatle but hey!!) I will have to hide under the bed for a week. That will be huge personally, socially and culturally. The impact, regardless of who's better than who in music, is bound to be seismic because he and his four colleagues signify THE pivotal point in cultures from the far east to the far west. That day will be so huge it may even be scary, the effect....no one's prepared for that.

I love Can to and krautrock is one of my favourite genres of music he was such a good drummer. He the band would not have been the same without him. Anyway on the brighter side of things could you do a video on Kraftwerk I'm 11 years old and have a good taste in music if I do say so myself. As I said I loved krautrock and hoped you could do some more videos on that genre so I wondered if you could do one on Kraftwerk since it is one of my favourite bands as well as Can. I also love you personality and the way that you describe and explain music. :-)

I was gasping for you to say Mitch Mitchell in your list of drummers. I watched that early 70s film on Hendrix where they interview his girlfriend Fayne and his father etc. interspersed with Jimi's incredible performances....I've watched that film over a hundred times dating way back to my youth but these days what strikes me time and time again is how intuitively BRILLIANT Mitch is at not only holding it together while Jimi goes wild but how he drives it as well as grooves it and the intricate detail. Doesn't get enuff mention Mitch Mitchell.

Hi, Derek! I just subscribed to you afte running across your review of Catherine Wheel. I'm a vinyl nut and an early Porsche nut and so, consequently, I'm a big fan of Rob Dickinson (Singer Recreation Design). I had heard of Catherine Wheel somewhere way back, but, hadn't listened to them until digging up stuff on Rob and that's where I bumped into you. Planning to head out to my favorite local record store here in ATL tomorrow to try and pick up a 180g copy of either Ferment or Adam and EvE based on your recommendation. NOW I've got to check out some CAN and some Jaki Liebezeit thank you very much!! Anyway, just wanted to drop in and say you're sending out some great stuff. Really digging what you're doing. I'm a fan of you too now .... do you have any of your own music up? Well, keep up the great work and keep on doing what you're doing. Could NOT agree more on your Trump "administration" debacle take. Michael Flynn just resigned (c'mon Kellyanne, BANNon, Rance and Pence!!). God, if there is one, help us all. Well, I digress. Thanks, again Derek. Great vinyl reviews. Best.

hello Derek, good to hear you again too bad it's under unfortunate circumstances. I first ran into you quite accidentally right after the passing of our mutual friend Greg Lake. I was very moved by your story of peer pressure for listening to something that touched you deep within. there has been too much loss almost too much to deal with in such a short period of time. I've been listening to your videos since that time and respect your musical tastes as well as your political opinions. as it happens I agree with them as well. should you have the time please Avail yourself of the opportunity to listen to some of my original works. I believe they may be to your liking. I'm not selling anything and everything is downloadable for everyone and free as well. I just thought it may bring you some pleasure. since I only play keyboard instruments and do vocals I rarely have a decent collaboration with percussionists and people who are Adept at guitar and Bass. I master most of my own material and if you think you can contribute musically you are welcome to give it a shot. I'd appreciate any commentary good or bad. I hope you feel better emotionally in these difficult and tumultuous times and that some of the music you run across will lift your spirits. most respectfully, Joe

it's Liebezeit pronounced leebeside, sorry put i'm a bit anal retentive of pronounciation.Jaki was one of the best drummers ever there is no replacement.what i hold against Bowie whenhe was in berlin ,he always told all the music papers how much he was into German electronic music but he was obviously too good to record to play with the German musicians he apparently so admired and had musicians flown in from England the Usa..ok he had the money to do so.I used to bump into Jaki or Holger Czukay a few times when I lived in Cologne,Jaki was one of the most humble guys I ever met but also very nice he loved talking about music and i learned a lot about drumming just talking to him.Holger is also fantastic company.would have loved to have played with either of them but they were both so busy.

A poignant death when one considers how Can were seeking to reinvent Germany after the Reich and escape/denial into oom pah/Schalger in the 60's. I hope this re emergence of autocratic nationalism/fascism is short lived and Trump and co's 'reign of terror' is short and more importantly widely resisted by musicians especially. Would be a good way perhaps to remember Liebezeit.

You're wrong about Trump, especially when calling him a fascist, but i don't think that's important on a day where one of the greatest drummers of all time passed away. RIP Jaki

domii31 Fuck off. It's his channel, he can say what he wants. Trumptard.

      @domii31 7 лет назад +9

Yeah i agree, and i can reply to whatever he says because he has an open comment section where people can agree and disagree with the things he said in the video. Pure and simple, he is not a fascist. That is all i said. You go to telling me to fuck off and calling me a trumptard. You don't even know who i am or what i support, so why don't you fuck off and read about what a fascist actually is.

Google fascism and first thing you get is "an authoritarian and nationalistic right-wing system of government and social organization". If that doesn't describe the tendency of Trump's ambitions I don't know what does.

    • @domii31
      @domii31 7 лет назад +2

Alright, I'll play. How would you describe Trumps administration to date? What has he done exactly that would classify him as a fascist? I'm not asking you to quote him on some speech he did, I'm asking you what exactly he has done so far that could be classified as "fascist".
A true fascist government would never allow you to criticize it, which Trump is only standing up to now after being crucified by the media time and time again, a true fascist government would not allow any opposition to exist and would achieve this with violence.
Trump doesn't condone or entertain any of these ideas, in fact you see a lot more violence and hatred from people who oppose Trump than from those who support him.
Just to make things clear again, i do not support anyone who's a politician, because they are at their core liars, cheaters and thieves, so don't automatically assume that just because i think the lesser evil won the election that i support it.
But please, do tell me what you think is so "fascist" about Trump. What do you even know about his ambitions, all you know is what MSM is telling you and i'm sure we all know how reliable they are.

Hi domii31 ... Let's see how it plays out shall we? Mussolini and Hitler were fascists before they took power but anyone with the least capacity for discernment knew exactly what they were. Anybody who doesn't know or needs further evidence of Trump's ambitions after all these decades, can't have been been paying attention. The idea that those who oppose the fella manifest more hate than his supporters wouldn't stand up to a half-hour exercise randomly sampling RUclips comments. Good wishes, let's hope against hope you're right and I'm wrong. (To those here to remember Jaki Liebezeit, my apologies - that's it now.)
