    My thoughts exactly. On the side, I work at a record store once a week and I've been accumulating so many records that I listen to a couple of times, make a video about, and then put on the shelf. My plan is to take a break from the store and acquiring new records starting in January. This gives me a little over a month to ramp down. Just like you stated in the video, I also need to spend time doing other things and also appreciating what I already have. I have also been toying with the idea of a massive purge. I feel like if I am going to sell off a large part of my collection, the time is probably now. The overall interest in vinyl with the general public seems to be waning and soon these things may be worth a lot less than they are now.

      Hi Robert, thanks for checking this out! I'm a huge fan of your channel and your sense of humor. I like your January plan. This whole thing is just kind of a pendulum swing. Overall I just need to be more selective. I took off the month of August, for the most part, and then took a trip to Athens, Ga. in September (my next video, I'm a little behind) and totally overcompensated and picked up about 45 - 50 records in two days. Granted, I would've gotten those same albums if they were at my local store. I think I have one more from that pile to listen to. Honestly, I just like hanging out at my local record store and talking to the clerk and the owner and some acquaintances who are usually there. I can't have those deeply musical conversations with most of my other friends. They just get sick of me talking about vinyl and various guitar tones. Thankfully there is this strong vinyl community on youtube. That's cool that you work at a store part time. That gives you a place to drop off records. Most of the records I want to get rid of are probably in (VG) condition and most great records stores don't want to take in anything other than (VG+) or (NM), and I totally get that. Maybe selling at a record fair or having a vinyl yard sale is in order. I honestly haven't regretted most of the stuff I've purged. If I had to scale it down to about 500 of my favorite records I'm sure I could do that.

      If it helps, and I'm sure it doesn't, I can safely say that I've sorely regretted getting rid of records in the past (trading for c.d's etc) but without doubt I've never regretted keeping any.......

    I don't collect records, but I can appreciate them. This video really applies to any sort of collecting and I found it useful to hear someone going through the same debates in their head. I would say if you have a good store, it is almost like drugs, as you have that relationship with your dealer that is also keeping you collecting as well. I think establishing goals for the year and also maybe trying to specialize is the best way to slow and manage collecting. I also set a budget per month at a certain dollar amount. I feel like this opens up a new way to have fun, as you are trying to get the most value out of your budget each month. It becomes a nice game too, just like the thrill of the hunt. Great video and hope some of my tips can help you, like your video helped me

      @giantorangerecords  Месяц назад +1

      Wow, I really like that idea. Set a budget and specialize in a certain area. I guess I mostly seek out garage, surf, psych and soul. Good metaphor with the dealer. Except I guess collecting vinyl won't kill you, but it might bankrupt you if you don't set a budget.

    I'm 58. I've been listening to vinyl for 40 odd years. I've got some rare vinyl, picked up when it was cheap to buy and not realising it was rare. I've only ever bought what I wanted to listen to and never bought purely to sell on. I am at a point where I'd like some albums that were released in 2024, but as prices of new vinyl has risen, I've not done so. With children, a long term ill wife, a job that takes up a lot of my time, I don't get to listen to my collection as much as I'd like, and when I do, it has to be through headphones. I'm seriously thinking about selling off a fair chunk of my collection to buy a classic car to drive with my son. I have multiple copies of some albums, on both vinyl and CD. DSOTM and Tubular Bells spring to mind. I can only play one at a time! It does become a problem. I'm going to a record fair on Saturday, so I'll see whats there. I look for bootlegs more so thesedays as most studio recordings I have. And I never clean them, just store them well and they sound just as good as when I bought them!

    i have been collecting records for 25 years and around the 15th year i started to realize that i wasn't collecting for myself but to impress other people. plus i couldn't afford a nice turntable so the records sounded worse than streaming. add that up with the fact that for the last 10 years i have had major financial struggles, istarted selling off my collection of records that was over 8,000 records at the time until about 2 years ago i sold off all my records but 1 record. I have only bought and kept 4 records in the last 2 years. it is much more peaceful keeping up with 5 records instead of 8,000. also it makes moving a breeze. i applied this shift to minimalism to other areas of things i collected too. i now can fit all of my stuff clothes included in a 4 foot by 4 foot by 4 foot space. which makes keeping my room decluttered easier and that makes my living space much more calming and peaceful.

    I have been there before. You have to get to a point where you need to change. It is the most stressful feeling I have dealt with personally. I think you will have more fun if you expand the kinds of music you listen to. I actually started having a great time once I started adding CDs into my rotation with my vinyl. I dont feel bad about spending too much because well, CDs, especially used are rather cheap. If there is an album I want to hear I will get a CD, and if I absolutely love it, then I will get it on vinyl. I was so wrapped up in which records are first press and all of that, but the real reason I like music in general is because its fun to listen to! After sitting there and thinking about why I collect music in the first place. What I realized is that all I actually want is the highest quality playback I can humanly hear. This has made it easier for me, because now I wont buy cheap used records.

      @giantorangerecords  Месяц назад +1

      There is some truth to that. I did a rough calculation a while ago and figured out I'd need to listen to about 5.5 records per day to listen to all of my albums once per year. And then I have multiple pressings of the same albums.... which kind of complicates that calculation. Time to really scale it back.

  • @AisForAliceBisForBob
    @AisForAliceBisForBob 23 дня назад +1

    Nicely done! I have a collection (approx. 2,300 LPs and 3,500 CDs), but I do not consider myself a "collector" per se. Date of press, country of origin, color variations, etc. mean nothing to me, as the music is the most important element. Though I will make sure the LP/CD and cover are in good condition, and I do not want cut-outs. I recently did a purge of 500-600 CDs in anticipation of an impending move, but I gave all of them away to friends as record stores give you virtually nothing for them. I'd rather throw them out than accept $0.50 - $1.00 from a buyer who will mark them up considerably once they are in their possession.
    Not sure I've ever gone 30 days without buying something, but I commend you on your success in going 29 days. You didn't say, but I was wondering if you felt you missed out on anything, or if this is going to alter your music purchases moving forward? Cheers!

I got back into collecting just before the current boom so it's distressing to see so many records that should be sold for $10, $15 going for $30, $40 or more. Lots of records over graded. Just recently I had an online friendship with a dude who had over 4000 records and we were great friends and had similar tastes and opinions. We shared records, and did swaps in the mail. He died this summer and in a lot of ways that took the wind out of my sails. I see prices coming down ever so slightly, stuff on my wishlist coming up more often, but I just can't justify it. My decision was mostly made for me by external influences, rather than it being a mainly conscious one.
      There hasn’t been a record shop near enough to me that I could walk to for a long time.
      The nearest one was a branch of a small independent chain, a twelve mile round trip away, which was forced out of it’s premises by the corporate greed of a large competitor which outbid them for their lease.
      So now my options are online purchases or happening across tiny record shops in London, or the occasional purchase of a new album on cd (sometimes even vinyl) from a supermarket.
      Worsening physical health and two significant bereavements put paid to about 95% of my interests including listening to recorded music in recent years and I simply don’t do much of anything any more.
      So it became fruitless to purchase albums that would sit unopened and unheard.
      In the past eleven months, I’ve bought the new Stones album on cd, a three coloured vinyl ‘Now’ USA compilation and the Roger Waters redux of Dark Side on coloured vinyl (none of which have I played yet)
      I intend to buy the new Cure album on whichever format I find it first, this month too.
      Previously, that small handful over very nearly a year would have been a very lacklustre purchase performance from me for one trip to the record shop alone😆
      I think it’s definitely a good thing that you’re reigning your purchasing in, if only to enable the growth of your A/C fund👍🏻 (it’s quite easy to go down an obsessive rabbit hole of just buying and collecting rather than buying to listen)
      You have a handsome collection and should definitely be enjoying them as you say👍🏻
      As important as it is to budget carefully and to be a grown up, I think it’s also excellent and equally important that you still love and listen to your music. 👍🏻 It’s a cliché but it stands that life absolutely isn’t a dress rehearsal and we should take every ounce of happiness and satisfaction from it whenever possible and reasonable.
      The fact you share your music with your son and he enjoys it is quite wonderful and must be immensely rewarding.
      There’s something eminently sad and gratuitously pointless about a record collection that sits unplayed I think.
      In the absence of my listening to my music collection these days, I have rather oddly been making the effort to go to the cinema and to see live music whenever I can afford it.
      In the past couple of years I’ve seen Van Morrison, Roger Waters, Blur and Cypress Hill perform.
      It’s quite the catharsis (the entire day, not just the performance) and I simply can’t recommend it highly enough for anyone in any form of a situation of despair or depression or similar🙂👍🏻
      Apologies for the long winded response and thank you very much for replying. This was a terrific video and pleasantly edifying to have a brief window into your fantastic record collection🙂😎👍🏻
      All the best for the future and I hope you’re able to retain your new found purchasing/listening life balance😁😄👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Buying newer albums has slowed because of the price being close to $50 each, i still find some artists releasing under $30..but very few. Also im not a fan of most of todays popluar artists. I have a select few. I look for albums finally getting pressed on vinyl from the 90s early 2000s. For the most part i have everything else from the late 70s and all the 80s. Once in a great while something will pop up at a record store or fair that i forgot about and if its decently priced , i buy it. Last month we had a record fair in my city and found 10 albums (2 of which were replacements of my old worn out copies) and i only spent $18 for all. Too many people are gouging consumers and there are those who have unlimited spending, which i dont. No used album is worth $50 no matter who pressed it, which pressing it is 1st, 2nd ,20th. Less than 7 years ago i ordered uk only pressings of many 90s albums, or other countries and paid under 5 euros and shipping was cheap. Now those albums are priced over 30 to 150 euros. And international shipping is outrageous these days. I dont think any record store trying to stay afloat would tell you to stop buying. We are into the holidays and my money just needs to go towards other things. Besides that NOTHING good is being pressed at this time.

    "It's time to appreciate what I already have." That's the key! At some point, the compulsive acquisition can become more important than listening to the music and you can forget why you ever did it in the first place. "Record collecting" (which I've done all my life) does feel prohibitively expensive in a time of such economic and political uncertainty. (And if the promised "tariffs" go into effect, imported vinyl is about to become a LOT more costly!) Years ago I started burning my thousands of CDs ("losslessly") to hard drives, which I play via Roon through a Cambridge Audio DAC (warm, punchy, analog-sounding) and beautiful vintage 1970s analog audio equipment (tube and solid state). That often sounds better to me than many LPs, depending on which cartridge I'm using. I still love my records, but they're a luxury -- kind of a decadent one, at this point. The actual music is what's most important to me -- but I do savor the look and feel of the 12-inch discs (some of those labels are works of art) and the large artwork. Without consciously deciding to do so, I haven't bought a NEW record in many months, though I've picked up a few vintage jazz titles...

    Only 12 to 15 hundred? I made it that point by the late `70's. I'm up to over 62,000, now! It SHOULD be 64,000 but, my ex-sisters fucked me over 5 years ago and I lost at least 2000 78's.
    Have you ever been to Jerry's Records? He's got a couple million!! Val Shively probably has more than that but, I think he only deals with 45's.

      @@giantorangerecords There's videos here of his store. He was even featured on an episode of the t.v. show, "Pack Rats" where they took a tour of the warehouse where he lived with his personal collection! It used to be a car dealership. It's now 2 or 3 floors of this HUGE mostly underground building LOADED with records!! You can barely move in the place for records!! Before he bought that place, he had three warehouses that actually WERE just houses filled with records!! 3-story houses with nothing but records in them!! And another place a few miles away that was right across the street from where World Artists Records used to be in the `60's (the label Chad & Jeremy were on).
      Sadly, Jerry died mysteriously almost 3 years ago. As he always said, they'd probably come into his house and find him dead under a pile of records. That's pretty much what happened. Somebody went to see him, one day and found him dead amongst records.
      As for my 78's, thanks! My greedy ex-sisters took my house away from me claiming that mom's new Will, which gave me a 50% share of the house and a life estate, was invalid (which it wasn't!!) so, I ended up getting kicked out a week before Christmas and didn't have the time to take all of my stuff. I was promised I'd be able to come back and get all those records and other things but, they never gave me that chance before someone else came and cleaned the house out and got all my stuff!! Luckily, I got all the albums, 45's, CD's and SOME 78's. Got all my drums, basses & synths, too!!

      @@DrewKane interesting take. I streamed a lot of music on my phone today thru the hifi, and while the sound was pretty good I sure missed the handling of the record, having to look at a screen, and not being able to see the artwork full size. Minor problems I suppose, but the process is a lot less fun.

      That's kind of what I'm thinking too. The market will eventually start to cool off (hopefully). When I started collecting 25 years ago nobody cared about this stuff and records were cheap. I was also pretty young and the more general classic rock type stuff was easier to find because they sold a lot of albums. I didn't get into the obscure psych stuff until a little bit later.

      That’s an absurd premise! I’m 42 been collecting since I was 15 years old. My record collection now has med value of around $50,000 and almost 90’000 plus on the high end. My gear is extremely modest. I’ve probably spent less than $1000 on it total in my life . For me first and foremost it’s always been about music. The gear is secondary. I have a decent micro line stylus but other than it’s basic. And I’m very happy. One day I may upgrade.
