Welcome to the Heavy Spoilers show, I'm your host Paul and this video we're breaking down X-men 97.

Episode 5 is now out and we're gonna be breaking down all the easter eggs, hidden details and references to Marvel laced throughout. Are U N...ey I said are U N...cos...cos its about Genosha joining the UN. Now that was actually teased and set up last week when Roberto talked about it to Jubilee. The story is something that pulls directly from the comics and we watched as Magnetos Genosha was welcomed in by the UN.

Those 2 mutants which we see right before dazzler could be cloak and dagger 'gender reversed' or wearing opposite colours as their powers look a lot like in the show Cloak and Dagger.... could I be right?
Mate, this episode was awesome! I truly hope they reverse the mutant deaths we just saw, as a person from south Louisiana, I feel for Gambit, but we do not talk like that, the writers stress out our accent to make it more humorous

"what you gonna tell your dad" about this episode?
I was taken aback at how brilliantly this episode was written and executed. This was definitely the most emotionally compelling animated show I've ever seen. So many memorable snippets and sound bites. Everyone was spitting bars, especially Nightcrawler, Rogue, Cyclops and Gambit. They really tapped into the human aspect of these characters. Not even a Scott Summers fan but I felt the pain and confusion in his situation in a relatable way. The song they danced to even slapped. The ending made me tear up a little. Absolutely amazing episode!
Wow. That was devastating. The entire emotional arc in the episode between Rogue, Remy, and Eric, juxtaposed with the B story of Jean, Madelyn, and Scott. Both Magneto and Gambit sacrificing themselves for Rogue, leaving her alone emotionally and as the appointed leader of Genosha. Gambit showing a measure of his tremendous power in the final moments doing something that even Magneto and an island full of mutants hadn't accomplished. The momentary glimpse of Cable only to be stripped away again. Even the calm before the storm of the happy island of mutants playing in the streets and using their powers in celebration starkly contrasted by the red toned destruction of that fleeting dream. This was simply one of the most powerful episodes of any show I've ever seen. Truly a tremendously great episode.

@@ssppeeaarr Magneto was a known risk to sentinels. I'm sure they could story cover it with Mastermold had learned the frequency/damage type that would break through. Gambit was a sleeper. He was unknown/unthreatening to the point of being tortured for funsies by Mastermold. The "remember it" line was a great response to the unknown entity assessment. Gambit was insulted that it wouldn't have bothered to prepare for him and charged everything he had into making it pay for that slighting.

I love that the title is called "Remember it" because both Gambit and Cable were notorious for using that line in the original series. When I saw it I wondered if it was referring to Gambit or Cable and WE GOT BOTH!!! Such a great episode!
That episode was incredible! Seeing Nightcrawler return with his original voice actor from the original 90s series was awesome! I really liked the story they told here with Rouge and Gambit here now that Magneto has kind of upended their lives and relationship. The action in this episode was also incredible! Seeing Nightcrawler and Gambit use their powers was cool, and I gotta add that they were represented visually spectacularly. NOW THAT ENDING WAS ABSOLUTELY INSANE! Cable?? The "Remember it" moment was crazy! Magento??? I'm losing my mind!!! 100/10 episode! I need the next episode ASAP!

That Cable scene was so well put together with the explosion in the background, his voice in Madelyne’s head at first, the split second he has with his mum and then BOOM! These people did an amazing job this episode 👏🏾

Cable is a time traveler, so why can't he go back further than the Genosha attack & save everyone? Just seem plothole to me.

Based on what he said to the reporter during his outburst, i think we are heading there.
That scene coupled with his flashbacks.. the flashbacks had me welled up, the “don’t be afraid” in German fucking broke me. I’m still not okay after watching that.
“Hab keine Angst” means “have no fear”. They mistranslated what he said, though you could argue the sentiment is the same.
As for Scott - in the comics, he becomes _extremely_ Magneto-like. In fact, he becomes more extreme than Magneto ever was. And even straight-up kills Xavier.

Emma Frost commenting on Moira Mctaggert being the only human on the council, is a reference to Emma Frost being the only mutant on the Human High Council alongside Moira McTaggert in the Age of Apocalypse.
Moira Mctaggert will turn out to be a mutant at the end....like the comic books
I’ve been getting hints since episode 1 of Hickman’s Krakoa arc.
I think that Emma singled out Moira as “a human” so that we would all be shocked when it’s later revealed she’s a mutant all along.
her presence was a huge nod to Krakoa to me, along with council/gala. resurrection and possible timeline resets incoming!
Live action X-men needs this type of storytelling. This is amazing

Concerning when Jean was switched out for Maddie, the most agreed upon theory I've read online was that it was at the end of Season 4, when Jean was kidnapped by Sinister after her redo wedding to Scott. When Maddie reads the mind of Jean in the X-Men 97 episode 3, we see Jean has fragmented memories up until the wedding (like of her time as the Phoenix in Season 3). It also explains why she no longer had the ponytail in Season 5. Sinister got both Scott and Jean's DNA when he kidnapped them in Season 2, so he had plenty of time to make a clone before making the switch in Season 4.
Yes, it makes the most sense if we have to speculate when the swap happened. The real reason was probably because Season 5 had a lower budget because the character designs get simplified / redone and the animation isn't is good.

Gambit has been my favorite X-men since a kid, when that scene came up where he died and the end scene killed me. I legit dropped three tears 😂😂
I noticed the reference with Cyclops, Madelyne Pryor's psychic entanglement with Jean Grey finding out, kinda like that whole drama with Cyclops, Jean, and Emma Frost from the comics. But this time, they switched it up with Madelyne instead of Emma. And Emma's knowing smirk? Total psychic power move, like she's got the inside scoop on everything
For real… I hope she and Sebastian Shaw made it out this episode to see what they do with that info.
Emma would have, as this is the event that lead to her Diamond-form Invulnerability mutation.
As for Shaw and the dead characters - I’ve been picking up since episode 1 that they’re teasing the Krakoa storyline. Which means in future seasons, all dead characters will be resurrected.

People have been speculating that Valerie Cooper is really Mystique in disguise. I wasn't sure. The look on her face when Magneto tells her about him and Rogue as his queen confirmed it to me.
And I was teetering on the edge of my seat from the moment Cable showed up. Haven't been this invested in (and subsequently devastated by) the outcome of a battle for many years, specifically some mid '00s anime. Not even Dune Part 2.
But the problem with that is that Sentinels can detect mutants and notice the mutants around Val was killed but she wasn’t targeted.

The mutant in 9:52 is Exodus. Omega level mutant, one of Apocalypse's first heralds during the Crusades.
He was Magneto's right hand man during the Asteroid M saga too if I recall correctly in the comics.
And was an important key character in the Genosha massacre. I wonder why this show decided to skip him over as a villain?

Also, the one you don't recognize is Exodus. All powerful emissary for Magneto. He's such a big threat he took on the X-Men and the Avengers together during Bloodties. He most DEFINITELY wouldn't be dancing like that lol

The 90's inspired song is an actual song by Ace of Base, Happy Nation 😅
I'm sure it was mentioned somewhere else here, but the character you thought might be Azazel is definitely Exodus. He was kind of a mystery character for several years before they delved more into his backstory, which ended up being kind of weird. He was an Acolyte on Asteroid M. I mostly remember him from the Fatal Attractions crossover and then the follow-up crossover Bloodlines.
In a nutshell, Exodus is supposed to be an "External" like Apocalypse, only he grew up during the crusades.
This episode was a complete 180° and I love it!
I was expecting more drama from the whole TV interview side but when Cable arrived I knew this was gonna end horribly but I remembered what happened to Genosha in the comics and it brought me back to those few panels.
I'm glad this show improves from the original and is able to be mature both in storytelling and animation, a phenomenal job all around!

Nightcrawler and Rogue are siblings.
Mystique is Kurt’s Mother or Father (depending on which story ends up sticking) and Mystique adopted Rogue. Mystique also had a child with Sabretooth called Grayden, who was born without powers.
the newest comics (Xmen Blue by Si Spurrier) explain that while everyone thought Nightcrawler was son of Azazel and Mystique, they explain how Azazel was a beard and never the real father, and that Mystique as a man and Destiny as the mother gave birth to Kurt. Destiny is his Mom. Mystique is his parent as we always thought, but what a twist, shes the dad not the mom! thats canon now, and the original Azazel reveal The Draco storykline is one of the least liked stories in xmen history, so rewriting it as having another layer is pretty welcome.
I always thought mystique was a female, that is how she is shown in all the movies and I believe the comics. Something I am not aware of must have happened.
They are a full shapeshifter at the genetic level, so both/either/neither as needed

I am in shock. I have goosebumps on my arms. The attention to detail, the echo of sound from the sentinel, the use of Gambits power, the German language and I believe hebrew, the reflection in motorcycle mirror, the eyes capturing the dispair. The emotion felt. I dont know what to say. It was truly the most amazing. I cant put words together
Now that was an Episode !!!!!! Like wow. Mouth on the floor literally the whole time! Bravo !
Something no one seems to be talking about is that the original Gambit, Chris Potter, voiced Cable in this episode.
Jean and Maddie get the psychic shock because in episode 1 when Maddie (thinking she was Jean) used Cerebro to enter Henry’s mind, she was taken to this moment - the barren wasteland of Genosha, with a face in the wind flying towards her, saying “not again”.
Because Cable is Maddie’s son (and Maddie is Jean) the connection was Possibly Cable’s memories reverberating.
Before Cable is sent back to the future here, he says “not again” as he did in Episode 1.
At least before she (seemingly) dies, Maddie’s last thought was that her son, lost to the future with an incurable virus, finally returned to her and he survived.
I didnt think the revival would hit THIS hard.
Can we talk about Magneto and his shieldonf of the moorloks too... Damn...

@@jamaicaqueens22I think it’s fair to assume that Maddie died in the attack. But at least before she was killed, she finally got to meet her son again and see that he survived.
@@arc7375 It's possible but that death most likely isn't permanent. We may get an episode for Cables point of view and seeing what the heck is happening. We still don't know whay exactly Mady saw in her vision a few episodes ago but it may have been Mastermold or someone else. There's someone powerfully psychic behind all these sentinel attacks.
That ending with Gambit blowing himself but was like a Rexplode kind of moment it was awesome & Damn all those mutants

Praise to the writers and animators. The episode was 💯 amazing. All the mutants depth was really tragic and shocking. Most of all Gambit and Magneto. 😢 that three headed Master Mold was the most scary.

Magneto reading and speaking Hebrew in the episode was a really nice touch. I guess it was supposed to be an emotional bit with Magneto sharing the most personal parts of his life with Rogue in the Savage Land which makes their affair more impactful and a bit tragic.
It was so many jaw dropping moments in this episode alone from the cameos in the background, the relationship drama and action set pieces
