Hi man, thank you so much for creating this video. I am a freelance 3d designer and animator based in amsterdam, working almost 7 years as a freelancer. Most of my clients are Ad agencies, because I have worked in that field before my freelance career. Through the I work for A-brands. Sometimes it feels like I need to stop freelancing, but looking at this video it reminds me to continue doing what I love. I am currently trying to switch from having ad agencies as clients to have more (small) brands as my clients, so that I can charge more. I feel often the lowest on the stack, if that makes sense. Thanks for the tips. I subscribed. Looking forward to see more from you. Cheers, Ruben!
Being on the customer end of the equation at this point in my career, I think you are providing some very sound advice to those starting the journey on this path. Great job! 👏👏👏
Thank you for this well-thought out process. For those struggling to learn Blender, I have a suggestion. Cut down on the YT procedural tutorials and use that time to understand the details of the program. Don’t eliminate tutorials, but cut back and read the sections of the manual that apply to your situation. Digest the information you read and experiment to fully grasp it. For example, I have some models I’ve imported for a huge scene I’m working on. Some models are nearly a million faces, and Blender is choking. Rather than Google a solution, I remembered reading about the decimate modifier in the manual. I pulled up that page in the manual, learned the 3 different methods, and really absorbed the differences. Planar worked best for me because it uses angle constraints, which is perfect for the vehicles I was trying to crush. Point is, you can do the same for every speed bump you come across without relying on someone else (videos). Of course, business and career advice like this video are pure gold, and well worth the time spent. Thank you, Smeaf!

Didn't started Blender, Don't know when i will, No idea how to even make money doing 3d animation, But i just know one thing.. This is the best advice i have ever received.
If you want to do it, just get started today. Find any Blender beginner course at all, and just spend 30 minutes on it, or longer if you feel up to it. Tomorrow spend 30 minutes on it, and again the next day, etc, etc. Keep track of how many days in a row you did it. Once you break that chain, start a new one and see if you can make the next chain even longer. I'd recommend Grant Abbit's Blender 3.0 beginner playlist, but it really doesn't matter what you pick, just that you work at it, struggle, and grow.
Great video! Everything explained in a fun (and very logical analogy... trust me) and clear story to make something as broad and complicated as this easier to understand. I do have some questions though, how long / how many hours per day or week do you invest into these kinds of projects? And what do the companies expect? As a fulltime student it could be hard finding the right balance between time and other priorities. And I can imagine a company wanting to have a project finished within maybe a month or sooner, do you have a trick of recognizing "impossible" and/or realistic projects based of off your own skills? Knowing what you're able to do and or not? Loving the content, keep em coming! :)
this actually is real good video not only for this but for any other business models who are thinking of startups with new ideas. learned a lot thanks a bunch brother.

I believe the SMEAF method could work for any business idea. Thanks for sharing and making it so fun. This actually made Minecraft make sense for me lol!
Hey @Smeaf!! This was one of your funniest videos yet! My favorite is @13:30 lmao!! Also thanks for the tips, brother. Lots of things to look into if you're serious about becoming a succe$$ful artist.
Thank you for the great advice. I am burning for this. Have been in Blender for a few years (for web3), but just lately discovered that web2 is the way to go. With a lot of work on my portfolio, appearance and skills still. But I am very passionate about this.
thankyou again! your videos really fun to watch and weirdly enough it makes me understand things that are complicated at first but you showcase your videos with such amazing story and weirdly fun to watch i don't know why but everytime the humour is unexpected but weirdly enough to make me laugh :D so thankyou!
applicable to so many small businesses. Nice! I don't care what your work is, 3D or otherwise, it is always obvious to you the artist/provider what your client needs/could benefit from. It's all about convincing them that your work/service is worth it. Outside of 3D I can speak from experience that you really need to ask 1000 companies, get use to hearing "NO". Then all of a sudden, a single company starts paying some bills and then oh my god their referral got me more business and sooner or later with tons of work you end up saying no to good money because you literally don't have time. Or raising your prices. I learned blender to make my company look better in promo material and it's so dumb how just looking better results in a massive increase in business. same ingredients, same service, same program whatever right? people shop with their eyes and you need to convince businesses of that...for some reason. There are so many businesses out there, small and large that would benefit from animation and/or static scenes. Just show them that they're idiots for not hiring you.
I appreciate the video, Smeaf. Struggling with making a career out of Blendering. But this one gave me a roadmap to shoot for. Although the references makes me want to procrastinate and just play Minecraft. Haha!
Even though my goal and mindset right now is not to make money with 3D art and just for fun, but if i end up mastering 3D i would love to make it my job thank you for this video! :D
Problem with being niche is you can get pigeonholed into only do one thing. Better to diversify and get good at different areas so you can to pivot if you need to.
Hey Smeaf! I have a question if you didn't mind. You mentioned that in order to "find a niche", you need to explore until you find something that you're good at. Then, become a master in that niche. What if the way you enjoy using Blender (so far) is not very niche and will not get you very far, should you become a master at it? Or what if your niche is indeed rare but not in demand? For example, if you like making stlyized isometric rooms, there are already a lot of people doing amazing things in that "section" of Blender, if even if there wasn't, it doesn't seem like a very lucrative thing to advertise. What would you do in that case? Find something else to specialize in? I feel like this could take forever, since it can take years sometimes to be a master at something.
When I started learning blender I liked to do that too. But you gotta understand what you like won’t always line up with what the market wants. In this case, like you mentioned, isometric rooms aren’t really that sellable, you might have to get creative ways of marketing it such as offering these renders to PC/PC part brands (with the actual product included in the render of course) for their socials/ads. Or in any other case just research the niches with most demand and pick the one you like most and master it.

Hey @Smeaf!! This was one of your funniest videos yet! My favorite is @13:30 lmao!! Also thanks for the tips, brother. Lots of things to look into if you're serious about becoming a succe$$ful artist.
Best vid yet dude!
I love your videos bc the advice is so universal. keep up the great work!
I know this video is about freelancing but the music starting at 8:00 is so nostalgic its from a game called Miragine war (or Age of War 1 and 2)
It’s just so good, takes me back 🥲
@@Smeaf ikr those were some of the best flash games back then

Thank you Smeaf, That video was super helpful :^)
No problem! 🫡
you left me with no words but a real thank you
Thank you for the great advice. I am burning for this. Have been in Blender for a few years (for web3), but just lately discovered that web2 is the way to go. With a lot of work on my portfolio, appearance and skills still. But I am very passionate about this.
Great video man!
This one was a long time coming, I’m so happy with it 🙏
thankyou again! your videos really fun to watch and weirdly enough it makes me understand things that are complicated at first but you showcase your videos with such amazing story and weirdly fun to watch i don't know why but everytime the humour is unexpected but weirdly enough to make me laugh :D so thankyou!
applicable to so many small businesses.
Omg 100%, would you like to connect? IG, LinkedIn? I’m curious on some things haha
New smeaf just dropped ❤
This was the only damn video on this platform that actually explains to you what to do....
Problem with being niche is you can get pigeonholed into only do one thing. Better to diversify and get good at different areas so you can to pivot if you need to.
"Let me be clear ..."
Gold!
Finally, the video we all wanted
thanks for the free info smeaf❤
No worries! Hope it helps 🔥
I'm only here from clicking the thumbnail: who the hell is gonna buy a plain cube?
thank you for this and the value and opportunities you provide us (provided we work hard) Keep us the great videos sir!
ur work is so perfect fr
Best video ever thanks god ! Euuuh smeaf
This is my first video on your channel. I found out a lot and also you are funny, I really lile your jokes😂
Fantastic video man, thanks so much
i love how this guy keeps falling back to the minecraft analogy and it actually works lol
There are so many ways to turn your 3d skills into cash these days. I’m also planning to share my own insights on this!
