I remember doing Miami Hoppers back in the mid-80s. I don't remember if I was ever able to ride out of one, but I never tried using an elevated platform of patio blocks like you did in the video. Maybe I should pull my old GT Pro Performer out of the garage attic and give it another try?
Go for it, especially if you’re nearly 50 like I think you might be. If you pull it off I’ll pull out my old diamondback and try the trick I used to do in the late 80’s where you jump over the handlebars, then sit on them, then coast on the front wheel and swing the back around to the front(dunno what you’d call it) Could never figure out where to go from there but I don’t think that’ll be a problem as I expect I’d eat it as soon as my feet get caught on the bar!
Totally digging the old school Dyno Compe with 1 piece crank and DiaCompe Bulldog side pull brakes! Every kid my age owned or at least knew someone who owned one of these!
THANKS for the comments. Dennis I rode in Vegas as a teen, Ur Hella Cool (*they don't say "Hella" much in Cleveland, guess it's a West coast thing Bra...) and el tremendo my bike is a DYNO from the 90,s and the pedals are plastic, I've learned my lesson. The front rim is replaced cuz I bent a couple before this video. The rest is original... I was 37yo doing this trick. RIDE ON!!!
So I'm forty and just for the record when I was little I insisted that everyone called me cru. When I finally got my first bmx bike I was super insistent that it had a blue seat, blue tires, and blue grips. You did one better though it's a super rare trick. Even the best flatlanders of the eighties can't pull it off. Let's just call it rare earth. Thanks bud you made my day.
gotta get in to it without having your hand on the seat prior to. Pull front brake, go in to the endo, half way through let your right hand go while turning the bars, then grab the front of the seat as your bars hit the ground ;) Great job though! I miss these days!!
I grew up in the 80's, we always called this a Miami Hopper going all the way to the ground with the handle bars. It was what it was called in the BMX magazines back in the day also. The very end of the movie Rad you see this trick done, going all the way to the ground.
Yeah I’m beginning to think I was mistaken about the exact definition of the Miami Hopper. I really didn’t start riding flat until ‘94, and ‘Rad’ hadn’t become a favorite of mine until ‘89. By then ‘Go’ and ‘BMX Plus!’ weren’t talking about such tricks anymore. It’s just that Martin Aparijo did a pogo version where the bars don’t touch the ground, but I believe that trick was named the “Miami hopper-hops.” This was in the 1987 GT Demo tape. I actually ran into Martin just before the pandemic started. He still does that trick. He’s broken steering tubes, and he mentions how tire pressure has to be soft enough to help midi gate this. 🤙
one of the easier tricks actually... the real trick is doing it a bit slower...holding it as long as you can in mid position and trying to lower it slowly...you will inevitably drop it down(not really slamming but with some momentum)....once in the rest position it is very easy to balance.
Seemed like an eternity. I was never a flatland trick guy though. It was all about getting air in my neighborhood, a constant pursuit to "husky" (what we called it in east Coral Gables, FL in early 80's) and spring off ramps higher and better, all day everyday.
@@boxingfan5742 as a young fella,...that was our thing too....launching off dirt jumps and and ramps (1/4 pipes...ect). Flatland freestyle stuff came l8r. When I was about 17
Cheating or not it's still cool! That's a wicked hard trick and that's the only way I could do em too. Cheating or not it still made me think I had the skills back in the day
Who is here after Matty trying it, and of course this video pops up like RUclips knew what I wanted to watch next

Don't think of them as bricks think old mattresses on the landing ramp.
The youtube algoritme never disappoints
I wanna see him do it straight on the ground tho. Still very impressive
He probably could if he took off his pegs
He would have to take his pegs off
And it would be substantially harder to not over rotate forward and pull the bike back in

Boulder Highway life
Top tip: take your left peg off so you can touch the ground… still, very impressive though!! Nice release at the end too!! 👍
Some say he's still stuck balancing in that position to this day..

Keep rocking dude! Very nice.
Children of the algorithm we meet once again!!
11 years later and this video is still sicker than COVID
I love everything about that trick and that bike
Hey that set of blocks looks like a good way transition into the full mh! I look about his age so it'll be easier on the ol' joints lol
THE FRONT PEGS ARE SO SMOL
Congratulations bro!
Beautiful bike I had one very similar it as a gt and had pedal back brakes

sooo many wasted rims! gotta love the early 80s!

Poor rim was crying. She almost tacoed.
Pops still got it
That is awesome!
nice man but why use the slabs? you got da skills!

Pretty sure that’s a bar endo. Miami Hopper is a pogo trick where the bars don’t touch the ground. Well done, though. 👍

@@corrioliseffect Midi gate? Do you mean mitigate?
@@mikeznel6048 yes, “mitigate.” My iPhone keyboard auto-uncorrected me again.
Time to try again - 2024 refresh!
Bit of a cheat with the paving slabs
Thats the only way I could do em too😁 still awesome that's a hard trick
Old-school rules.... 😁
Why is a video from 11 years ago in my feed 😆😆
Did you get stuck, come on we gotta go, that was cool , hang 10 . Hang10
Getting it in on a dyno zone
My buddy had a dyno comp. I still have my GT vertigo.

Does not actually count as it was not flat ground. Sorry.
