When you said that they described Lost planet 2 as "Too Japanese" as to why it didn't sell well. That's one of those game dev pet peeves of mine. Trying to pander to markets to make it more "western" really damages the franchise's future. It takes away the unique flavor that a game had at its core in order to try and make it artificially more "appealing". Games that are undeniably themselves are the ones that end up standing out and maintaining their popularity among an audience. Like, the Yakuza games for example are literally the most Japanese you can get , and that franchise is incredibly popular in the west. All that aside, I've been avoiding Lost Planet 3 for a while now. But I may take a look at it one day since this review is super solid!
what makes me a bit sad because after i've seen a reddit post that they're no lost planet games in sight in capcom's future game plans 2020-2024 when it got cyberattacked. "To Anyone who was hopeful, I'm sorry. atleast we can be disappointed together." -The Reddit Post itself
Devil may cry is another victim to this mentality, not just the DmC reboot but also DMC5. DMC 5 may have fun combat and decently made fights but it's world is more western and it's level design seems kind of dull compared to 1,3 and 4......arguably 2 as well despite that being a terrible game it had dull looking but semi interesting linear level design. They removed the light hearted puzzle RE influences and the interconnected metroidvania level design which was another disappointment of mine
but pandering to the west is the only reason the franchise exist that was the intention behind every lost planet game the reason they dropped the franchise was literaly because they wanted to stop doing that and focus on the things they know best
This game didn’t pass to well.. I beat the story first. Now I am going to beat all the side missions an get every achievement. Otherwise I can’t wait for MY FUCKING DISC TO WORK. My damn game won’t load.
It was definitely a good game. Every critic that made these games seem average was very picky. Like an odd time where people were really listening to game reviews.
Great video I recently found your channel because I had bought these games and I was looking up reviews and I watched your first two reviews which were great so glad to see this one as well. I hope this series comes back someday I feel like it was pretty good for its time and even back to Capcom they could probably do a sequel correctly. Can't wait to see what else you review!
7:10 Not to undermine your point, just wanted to let you know , besides seeing how much ammo you have in your current clip when you reload with the blue bar , you also have an outline smaller blue bar that shows you total ammunition you carry. I found out randomly by noticing but I also did see it as a tip whilst loading. 9:58 I didn't really get the vibe of purposely overblowing the "i am an evil scientist guy" in your face there. Infact its quite the opposite , its the only time (besides near the end of the game where is looking for Jim to tell him what Isenberg is up to) that we get the hint that there's more to his character than just chaotic stupid means of progressing science. I like his calm manners here , yes he is awkward as hell but he is more down to earth than usual, it overshines every moment he has just been an asshole when he gets around explaining things to people he automatically presumes are inferior to him in intelligence. But here , at the end of the tape , we hear the reason of it all , his patience and softness. He is talking to his mother , for her he takes a different approach , he doesn't want to belittle her , he doesn't mind explaining it in simpler terms where otherwise he'd make arrogant comments for the inability of the other person to understand what he is saying without extra need of clarification, he just wants to be listened. Perhaps its just a personal diary too , not really meant to be sent to his mother, but in this environment enclosed with his thoughts it could be just the way he imagines talking to himself, like as if his mother is listening. Nice review, i for the most part agree with you. I just finished LP3 without having played LP1 and 2 before and I had a good time thanks to the story and characters.
I haven't put as much time in this game as I have the other two, but I didn't enjoy it as a Lost Planet game, it was a decent game but it shouldn't have been Lost Planet 3, maybe Lost Planet Origins instead. However, I enjoyed the game as a story driven exploration game, more so with exploration than anything, the combat just wasn't satisfying, the lack of guns in game and terribly bland basic enemy design really put me off of trying all the guns and instead sticking with what I knew worked. The boss fights, especially since before this game came out I played through the first 2 and went directly on to 3 I was extremely disappointed. The environments were a massive step up from the first game in how it felt frozen and desolate however (excluding the second due to it's sheer variety) I didn't like fighting in the Rig because of how it was basically one big QTE magnet and I found it much more satisfying to roll around attacks and use guns, the lack of utility that the grapple had was a turn off, the variety of everything was cut down massively. Overall I enjoyed it for the wrong reasons, if I had to pick any Lost Planet game to play, 3 would be at the bottom of the list. I do plan on revisiting this game, just not as a Lost Planet game.
I agree with a lot of your points here; and all the negative aspects of the game are a lot more obvious if you start it up straight after finishing lost planet 2. (like I did for this video). When you revisit it I hope you have fun with it, even if you do have to pretend it's not Lost Planet 3 to make it possible!
@@Tomkonwhile I do agree with his points, another thing I’d like to add is how much this gave off Dead Space 3 vibes. It feels weird to say, but as a lifelong fan of lost planet 1 & 2. I had played dead space 1-3 shortly after taking a break from lost planet 3’s intro chapter and wow did it feel similar in a lot of weird ways. Mostly 3 with how action focused it was compared to the first two. Kinda like resident evil 5 being vastly different than the game before it, the music in LP3 reminded me so much of the zero G space walks in DS3. It was rather confusing at times. The action felt forced in all the wrong ways. What initially made LP so unique has been gutted to its core and damn does that hurt to see. Movement had lost its weight and felt less grounded than previous installments. Rolling felt artificial and was actually faster than sprint, so much of the player space was limited and it felt like the game was constantly telling me everything I’m used to with Lost Planet was wrong. Invisible barriers EVERYWHERE, grapple reduced to specific spots and was guided with a big symbol as to show me “HEY DUMMY RIGHT HERE YOU CAN GRAPPLE” and taking all the freedom of movement which made the first 2 games so great. I noticed some characters also had very low graphic designs other than their faces which felt really weird when comparing the visuals of their suits to Jim’s that was rather detailed instead of looking plastic’y. I won’t repeat what points I did agree with since they’ve already been said, plus I’ve still got to finish this campaign (didn’t watch the full video) but damn I really needed to voice how similar this game feels to Dead Space 3 at times. I think they had some awesome ideas with Lost planet 3 and rather enjoyed some elements of it. But it’s not a real Lost planet game, just a game that takes place within its universe. By making this game overtly western and removing a lot of the Japanese aspects, they’ve essentially killed the soul of the franchise within this title. It felt artificial, forced and fake. They should not have strayed from its own identity to appeal to the wrong audiences. Lost Planet already had an amazing community which loved this IP dearly. Even today I still talk friends into playing and they thoroughly love Lost Planet 2’s co-op. I intend on getting them into 1 as well, but they genuinely love Lost Planet for how unique it is. If a game is good, it will have fans that love it regardless of how dated it is. It will always find more.
Huge LP fan. Was SO HYPED when the third game came out. I was very aware of what genre of game Capcom was going for in this third entry. I remember watching trailers getting hyped returning back to the ice-covered world with a protagonist that would take on the formations of the pirate hordes. So seeing the gameplay and playing the game I wasn't at all surprised by the direction they went. I won't say that this game was horrific, but LP2 had such a fun co-op gameplay/multiplayer dynamic that the third game didn't have. However, the third game made the dialog less cheesy and the story was much more interesting. The gameplay does feel very samey to other 3rd person shooters of the time. I did miss the V.S suits but lore-wise it made sense that we were walking in a "trucker-style" V.S suit pre LP1. The weapons were a downgrade, but my main Gripe with LP3 is the Akrid. The most amazingly fun enemy to fight and kill was Nerfed and changed significantly. You were forced to shoot behind cover because the Akrid shot at you? Human enemies were only introduced in the last chunk of the game. Thermal energy not keeping you alive was a terrible choice. Now it's just a currency. It wasn't a terrible game. But I'd prefer playing the other two games.
What a disappointment smh. I played this when it dropped and didn’t finish it. Came back a few years ago and ughh it’s a solid game but the first 2 are far better
They lacked proper missions. It was like doom without fire. Just ice. It needed more to do without the violence. Why have Weather an Storm Classes when you can’t freeze in-general. If your just walking around and a storm comes in an your Rig freezes. You can wait it out. Or go outside an possibly freeze. We need mire Makeshift stuff to explore
The hub world design is cool like the tunnel and how areas open as you progress. The world had potential but as you mentioned ends up being flat. Also the tribe people were interesting but their hideout was also uninspiring. Even after I finished it I was like it's kinda average but after all these years I still think about it now and then
This is the only game where the soft locking glitches got me to actually rip the disk out of my 360 and snap it into pieces and never even regret it, I absolutely loved 1 and 2 and I really wanted to enjoy this game because it's atmosphere and hub level were just what I wanted from it but be it the first boss bug where I could only kill it with absolutely perfect nade throws or the arm rotator thing not working I just snapped and said screw this.
2:00 funny, i didn't bought LP2, because it wasn't japanese enough. (I know, story wasn't the best in the original LP, but i wanted them to improve it and not completely cut it out. (Honestly, i really regret skipping LP2))
This game is good when you haven’t played any of the Lost Planet games first. It was heart breaking to see this game as a former Shell of itself. Though at least the idea of it would help me with some inspiration in the aspects of it. Though I wish this game would get the Same treatment as Monster Hunter World is they wanted to “Appeal to a more western audience”
I remember playing the first one on one of the consoles but i just picked up all 3 for under $15 on pc. Been going back and trying out some old games I missed for one reason or another but I remember liking the first game.
Well I have done some research on the original and 2nd lost planet. And figured out only 3 of the vital suits are possible to build . From what I've seen and they are quite visibility possible if having the right tools and parts and materials. The 3 vital suits are the GTF-11 GTT-01 and the PTX-140. Things like the motor bike are indeed possible but who wants that over something better. I won't say how they are done cause people who try to steal ideas but I will say this so you won't have to keep dreaming. They are very possible and VERY VERY DANGEROUS.
for me lost planet 3 didnt hit the same it felt like gears of war mixed with dead space and it lost what ever character it had and now who knows whats next i hope they continue with new projects lp related but only time will tell
I saw this game on xbox marketplace one day years after playing the first 2 game and was surprised they made a 3rd one cause i never heard about it before. I bought it for $20 nad was excited. I played for maybe 8 hours over a few sessions and was bored to tears and just never continued
I fucking love Lost Planet 3...pretty much tied with 1 and 2 for me they really are all great. And is it just me or does 3 with max settings on pc literally look 5-6 years ahead of its time graphics wise...the game is drop dead gorgeous on pc.
Funny enough I just started playing the game of 3 and it's my first lost planet and I actually liked the rig and the whole frontier thing it made me feel for these guys freezing out here including the audio and text logs
Good review. I got this on Xbox Gold and finally played it. By the end I couldn't wait to finish it. The weapons were crap and when I finally got the assault rifle I just stuck with it. The cover system was debilitating if I could get it to work. Many times I'm rolling and rolling trying to get in cover and getting blasted. One of the bosses was easier on foot than in my ginormous machine but I couldn't get out when I fought it the second time. All the A button pushing made me feel like an idiot and tired the hell out of my forearm. The story itself was pretty cool but the movie like feel of it started to wear on me. Just on and on and on.
Lost planet 3 literally took a great game series and tried to be dead space 3 1 for 1. Ironic both games were shit on for this. At least dead space 3 was still a good dead space game.
