  • Are you confused on what grip to use and why? Or even what motion the hands should be doing in the swing? These are all critical in creating the best use of the club. Remember: the club face controls the ball and your hands control the club face so yes, it’s very important that you understand grip and hand action. This video will describe how the grip works and how to use the club face in the most effective manner.

    Malaska is undoubtedly the best teacher out there. With the exception of Padraig, he's all I listen to.

    One of the finest explanations of hand action through the ball I’ve seen, pure gold! Also, the tip on setup - open is square! 👍

    Doing this has changed my game for the better always use to hit a draw which could turn into a hook, but now I can aim down the middle or even left side and hit it straight to a small cut. Who knew that a strong grip could do that. Nice video

      Thanks Matt. It’s unbelievable what the grip can do not only to the face but how everything else reacts as well......and how much control you start to get to to mention added distance at the strike because now your playing with a square face. I see it everyday with my students.

    This grip/wrist information might be the most important thing for any golfer to learn.

      I couldn’t agree more Willie....The club face controls the ball and your hands control the club face. So you better make damn sure your hands are on the club properly in a functional manner to work the face properly.

    I do this as a drill sometimes. Grip it strong, and try to start the ball right. It makes you side bend more, and rotate more. If you stall your body rotation, your hands and arms WILL TAKE OVER. That ball is hooking off the planet. I would love to play this way, but unfortunately, I need more flexibility.

    I agree. Ive tried the wrist curl thing and its a weak position and a good way to hurt your wrist.

    Did I hear, set the club open at address as slightly open will be square at impact?
    This is good conversation. Thanks.

    • @BillyFitzgeraldGolf

      Yes because there is a little twist in the club head @ impact because of the grip.

    The problem that I have with a strong left hand grip is pain in my left thumb in the backswing and downswing. Otherwise, I totally agree with you. To counter the thumb pain I just keep the face closed on the downswing and keep my left thumb more on top of the shaft. This technique seems to work fairly well and eliminates the thumb pain.

    • @BillyFitzgeraldGolf
      @BillyFitzgeraldGolf  Год назад +1

      Hi Stan. I wonder where the pain comes from. Couple things to check is the left thumb will fit in the right hand life line. Also check your grip pressure so that you can feel the head of the club. Hope this helps and thanks for watching 👍⛳️

    Ran right out and tried this and my swing is smoother and less mechanical, but ball is flying hard left. I think I need to slow my swing down but I don't want to loose distance.

    • @BillyFitzgeraldGolf

      Hi Jonathan…the hook comes from the face twisting over after impact. Try making the toe of the club work up and not over after the strike and the ball won’t hook.

    • @flower2289
      @flower2289 Год назад

      Hit the ball with your trail hand with an underhand motion (using the grip Mike teaches). That will control that pull.

    At the 5:16 mark Mike is talking about the backswing and feeling like the club face is open , but because of your grip it really would be neutral and not open? Did I understand that correct

    • @willieorwontee2043
      @willieorwontee2043 3 года назад +4

      He's saying with the correct (strongish) grip, the average amateur will feel like the clubface is too closed during the takeaway and therefore either consciously (or subconsciously) open the clubface with too much hands/forearm rotation on the backswing. BUT - the clubface is actually NOT too closed with the correct grip/wrist break.

  • @AlexChekholko

    interesting, all the focus of this conversation is for people who hook it too much, so presumably it would be somewhat opposite advice for people who slice it too much.

    • @BillyFitzgeraldGolf
      @BillyFitzgeraldGolf  3 года назад +2

      Hi Alex. For more clarification on the grip have a look at my video grip and grip functions. If the top hand is on the club properly the bottom can begin to work more down the line in a less timing and flipping orientation.
