Great vid and very understandable. I really appreciated your showing the various shots and how the shoulder socket played an influence in the longer clubs.
Great video. I used this today on the range and in the short game. Great control all around. Thanks for sharing this info. Between this and Mike Malaska teaching about using the hands has completely changed my game and practice. I now know where the ball is going on the range and around the green. Can't thank you guys enough.
Best instructional I’ve watched on proper backswing techniques especially with the visual aids the explanation from hip high to the top is where I really get confused but this video cleared that up…subscription earned
Really like your videos and I’m practicing your hands in club head out method. Previously a typical miss for me would be a shot that starts at the target then hooks left with a lower than ideal flight. Now I’m hitting it higher and stopped the hooks but too often I hit it right with more spin to the right. Any thoughts as to how I can get the face square at impact? Appreciate your time….
Hi Ron…thanks for watching. First I would make sure your grip (lead hand) is in the club properly..then make sure your trail hand is cupped not flat at the top of the swing(squares the face) I have videos for both …grip first.
Billy enjoy your tips and technique. Question with a strong left hand grip, one can utilize the strength of the hand to impact, as Mike says in baseball or tennis. However right hand going back and thru tied to left back and thru, leads to some confused feelings as thru impact the left hand need to change plane as ulnar move thru impact will not stay on plane and has to move more around. Make any sense? Confused
Thanks for the note Jack. At the strike the weight in the head of the club will pull your grip and arm straight so your left hand is more neutral without you doing anything and the right hand/forearm supports the back of the shaft. So setup and impact are different because the weight the the head straightens your arm, joints and hands.
I agree there is rotation so the club is not completely shut at the top. The rotation needs to be in your shoulder socket so the whole arm rotates keep the face square. If you rotate your forearm this will lead into a lot of opening and closing of the face creating a lot of timing.
Hi Archie….for most people when they are swinging their best a loop is usually felt. This means the club is shallowing and going back maybe slightly outside which is where you want to error. In my experience if you don’t feel a little loop chances are you sucking the club to far inside on the takeaway.
Billy when you address the ball with a strong ( neutral ) grip where are your hands in relation to your body are they leaning forward ? Also is club face open or square to ball? Lastly I feel when I grip with a strong grip it has to be forced thus not allowing my wrists to be relaxed . Thanks for help
Hi Sam. Thanks for watching. Hands can be in line with the ball but not in front of and yes I want the face a fraction open because the club will square a bit at impact. It’s normal for your hand to have some pressure when the grip is new. If it locks your arm let your left arm hang by your side, put the left hand in then bring it in front if your body to release tension. The more you work with it the less tension you’ll start to feel.
@@BillyFitzgeraldGolf thank you ! I feel like I’m close, been hitting some really great shots . Every once in a while the hooks creep in , going to take a while to fully get rid of twisting through impact
Great video Billy, couple of asks, is there a specific drill that will assist in stopping the twisting of the wrists through impact that causes the dreaded hook when trying to adopt this feeling of closed/closed/ open swing thought. Also the closed feeling of the bunker swing is SO difficult for my brain to commit to but hopefully practice will overcome this obstacle. Please keep posting videos they are real gamechangers, you and Mike M are simply the best instructor's our there, cheers Martin
Thanks for the feed back. The twisting can be a result of a few things. I would start small and slow (chipping) and work your way to slow full swings. Make sure your grip, path and face is correct and making a connection between your trail hand and the face. We twist because we have to. You can also hit some small shots and get your lead grip as strong as you can and you won’t want to twist.
@@BillyFitzgeraldGolf thanks for the advice Billy, v much appreciated- used your technique on the course today and hit some glorious tight draws, is the hockey stick drill good for the feeling of keeping the clubhead square to the swing path?
After the strike the toe of the club works up and around the corner (square to the swing plane)…..for most people they have too much twist in the face and the toe of the club works aggressively left….so it would feel open
I didn’t catch how we are supposed to grip the club to do this? Also it looks like in the full swing the right arm and club head is rotating open? I loose it on rotating my arm in shoulder socket and 5hen come back down on full swing. I am trying it but still top or hit fat…
The grip is the same. It looks and feels like it is opening but it’s not if you have the correct grip and you are not twisting your forearm open on the way back. If you are hitting it fat chances are you are pushing on the shaft or twisting your shoulders on the way down instead of just releasing your arms.
This is going to take my TopGolf game to the next level. You da man Billy!!
Thanks Matt ..that’s awesome 👏 👍⛳️

Great video. Would you recommend incorporating a loop as you suggested in another video or would that only be if you're over the top?
