I've spent a lot of time watching RUclips golf videos and can truthfully say that this clip by Jim Roy is one of the best I've come across. I've been struggling with "coming over the top", and Jim's instruction about "quieting the body" and "giving room for the arms to swing" was a real eye-opener to me. Where many noted golf instructors are saying that you need to "fire the lower body first" and "move the hips", this instruction says to "quiet" the body and let the arms swing freely from the inside. I tried it, and it works! I'm now following all of Jim's RUclips videos, and I have found him to be a terrific teacher of the golf swing. Also, check out his instructional video on posture. It's a great one, too!
Haven't been able to hit my driver since my brain surgery in 2018. Watched this video last night and hit about 20 out of 30 balls at the range straight as an arrow! You sir are the man! Earned a follower.
I've struggled with this for months. Unfortunately my instructor couldn't relay the same info you just did in your video. One day while at the range, I tried something new, which was allowing my wrists to move instead of my arms just being an extension of the club. As soon as you said "too much tension in your arms" I immediately related. Great videos!
At 0:51, you nailed what I do. I've always (but been unaware of) started the downswing with my upper body, causing my club to be steep, hands out away from the body, and an outside in swing path. You're video helped me discover this. I went to the range to fix this - it's definitely awkward because the right way is new, but man did I ever get a hold of a few with a seemingly effortless swing because it was my hips that were dragging my upper body through to contact. I went from 240 yd slices to hitting the range net about 80ft up the net at the 245 marker! Thanks for the video. Very much appreciated.
A local pro in Atlanta taught me the exact the same things Jim mentioned. A lot people told me to forget about it. I think I’m gonna go back and work on these two drills. Since everyone else isn’t helping me with my over the top/ steep downswing lol. His method makes a lot of sense
That right foot back drill is the greatest thing I have ever tried. Literally stopped coming over the top and hitting draws within one bag of balls. Thank you so much.
Try the head cover/towel under back armpit drill. Much better because it actually teaches you how to swing on balance. Also it wont mess up your aim like this back foot drill.
@@jacobsommers6952 that drill isnt bad but aim was not the focus. Once I got a feel for my drill, the whole point is to set up square and have the in to out path feel incorporated. I have even been using that as part of my pre-shot routine with great success.
This is great thank you. I struggle with this. One way I know I am coming over too much on a drive is when I burry the ball and it hits about 5 inches in front of the tee and bounces up. That is a sure sign to me that I came over on the down swing
wow, this actually worked. I was almost ready to quit. watched this yesterday, went to the range, did both drills and never hit a bad shot. unreal. thank you.
@Chad Williams yes, Chad, I put my left foot forward and it was almost in line with my right foot behind. just a little right of my left so I had some balance. it worked like a charm. hit everything straight. you have to do it enough to get the "feel" of using arms more but it worked. good luck!!! I had the same issue as you.
Same drill my golf coach gave me, the right foot even with left heel. However, I like that you added the other one about pausing at the top and starting with the arms. My coach didn't inform me of that and I did suspect that the first move on my down swing was causing the over the top swing. Your video confirms it - thanks.
i have tried your method for a week now. i understand stand now why i slice, why i come over the top, why I can't quite my body, why i don't have a stright left wrist. why i come outside in with my swing. you sir are a answer to a prayer. thanks
I am constantly fighting(!!!) coming over the top and when I’m off I think about this video and these 3 drills. Thanks so much for putting this out there! -Former CNY’er
This is a very good video! I like the split screen with two different camera angles. This type of "over the top" kinda swing is my biggest issue for my driver.
You just changed my life. Got out of bed at 130 am to work on this. Already can tell my path is where it needs to be! I get my body into too soon , x baseball player.
Amazing video I never leave a comment but this video deserves one! Nothing worse then trying to fix something you dont understand. This video showed me what I was doing wrong! Drills on on point as well.
Can I tell you that the right foot drill has really helped my driver shots. I dont always get a draw but the ball goes almost straight now and of course more distance. Thank you very much. James (Scotland )
I actually tried this. The 1st drill. What i discovered was that I folded the right arm correctly that made me swing more from the inside. A throwing action. I put down small exit mirror on the ground and balls in front the mirror so I watch myself swing from the above. It really helped me with sensation and feelings. Thanks for the tips! Great help.
I'm a left handed golfer & left handed hitter in baseball. I went to the range & tried some of this & was pleasantly surprised it worked! the only reason I say "surprised" is because it felt soooo weird. I had to tell my baseball brain to swing to hit the ball to left-center field & once i did that, i started hitting square in the clubface 9 out of 10 times. Thanks for the video PGZ guy!
Great video - have been struggling with over the top, the “stagger foot” drill helped fix that plus it reinforced shoulder/hip turn and foot weight shift - have incorporated the drill into my pre-shot routine. Thanks!!
Thank you. One question, Is the flat left wrist at the top vital for a good swing.. it just doesn’t feel natural. Could improper wrist hinge cause over the top move?
first time I've heard too far inside to start and wow it solved it all for me. I was pretty close to figuring it out and this pushed me over the edge. THANK YOU
Interesting - I pulled my right foot back trying the drill and hit the ball great, so I use it all the time. I am 78 and not very flexible -- your thoughts
i've been golfing a long time and from observing myself and others it seems almost instinctive for most people to swing out to in. so some times for me i'll allow for it and line up a little left and open the face a bit and it seems to work with a bit of fade but you have to watch out for the pull. it's a faily powerful shot but shoots up high.
jim...thks for the great tips....i can't wait to try them out...ps...i followed you one time as you were attempting to qualify at for u.s. open at montclair cc because my high school friend(john peterson)... who you knew at USF mentioned you to me and said what a great player you ...keep up the great work..thks again
Sometimes in the round, when I have been hitting some draws off the tee, and also drawing my irons...I set up to play a fade, and I find myself coming over the top a little, and not being able to hit that baby fade that seemed so easy to hit early in my round. Any ideas why this might start happening? Or is it probably the same reasons you discussed in the video?
Moving the right foot back works for sure. I had a horrible slice as a begginer. Out golfing with my uncle on a dog leg left, he set me up like so. I hit the very first draw I ever hit, and a light bulb clicked as soon as I hit it. Still took time and practice to get it right, but that was definitely the beginning of the end of my slice.
Would you talk about how to play through fatigue, I always pause at the top but when I get tired I quicken my tempo and swing too hard and end up hitting the ball too high, is there a way to formulate a mental check to help me, it seems like fatigue leads to frustration and it becomes cyclic, by the time I realize I'm going up tempo its been 7 or 8 swings and my pw has gone from 150 to 110 and I just have to walk away because I'm so tired and frustrated by that point
Talent for teaching, and talent for playing the game at the highest levels. I saw your name on the list of Players who qualified for the 2018 US Senior Open last year. Congratulations on maintaining your own game and bringing your knowledge down to our level so we can enjoy this great game. Great lesson/Vid.. Thank you.
Thanks for the lesson I'm hitting it much more consistent now ,and I've got a baby draw going as appose to a push fade/slice I've hammerd it since just after Christmas most days at the range ..I'm going to play my first comp in the new year tomorrow at my club and I feel optimistic about it ....Thanks a bunch :)
Great video Jim thanks, think your point about overusing the body, and focus more on arms dropping is spot on! Hope it helps my 20 year pull to the left!!! However 1 small question re tip 3 (ball above feet) you talk about swinging "up the hill" but a ball that's above your feet is not necessarily 'uphill', so do you mean an uphill stance/lie .....or as well as??Thanks ps interestingly ive noticed last 20 yrs whenever i have uphill lie, right foot lower than left(ball fairly level) i hit better shots, and i dont mean just higher i mean better strikes. Wonder if gravity helping me drop my arms and the slope restricts me using my torso as much
The "pull the right foot back drill" really helped me. It makes me wonder though. Why not always swing this way, only with the right foot pulled back just a few inches? Would that lead to other problems?
Agree 90% percent with this however someone like me 35+ till last week OTT could never feel this or work out why the club has to be behind you to succeed 👍🎯I’ve done it my way
great insight will be trying this next time at the range. Will this apply with the driver? I hit amazingly constantly long and straight at the range but once on the tee box i cant hit the the diver at all. I think this is the reason. Over swinging and coming over the top. Any thoughts?
Shawn. It's most likely from too weak of a grip (club face open in relation to your path). If you are right handed warm up hitting some 3/4 irons. Imagine a watch on your left hand. Keep the watching pointing towards the ground at the mid point of the backswing. Hit 4-5 hooks in a row. Then gradually feel like you are swinging slightly more out to the right. This will shallow your club out. Give it a try, and let us know how it works.
Shawn, I have an unusual take on your problem. I wonder if your range tee boxes are very square, straight, level and plumb; while, your driver tee boxes on the course are pitched up, down, or sideways a bit. That's very common, you know, because it helps the tee boxes drain. My course is that way, and there are three tee boxes that are subtle side hill lies for the driver. The craziest ones have a lake on one side and an out of bounds, creek on the other. Since the tee box forces me to hit a draw, I end up aiming to hit a ball OB to the left. That's counter-intuitive for me. For me, the quirky lie of the tee boxes caused trouble with my balance and that caused subtle swing changes. Now, I stopped fighting this "groundskeeper's effect"; I just set up a little to the right and swing a little flatter. That change gives me better results than ignoring a slope.
Great 👍 finally something that is helping! I exactly learned that first lesson with my new Pro ! I’ve been coming from the outside at the Ball . He also said to exaggerate to make the body learn how to do it differently. Thx
Winner of a video, I have been researching "golf improvement tools" for a while now, and I think this has helped. You ever tried - Graysonyon Putter Prolific - (do a search on google ) ? Ive heard some decent things about it and my co-worker got excellent success with it.
Thanks for the tips. Sometimes on the first tee, or on a narrow fairway, I'll narrow my stance just slightly. It helps me turn better, gives me better balance, and keeps me from "jumping" on the downswing. I usually hit this drive dead straight! Looking forward to working on your other drills at the range. Thanks for the video!
I just found your video on over the top ,it's going to be a great help for me and I'm very impressed with how you explain things, looking for more of your video's. Thanks again GC

Thanks Jim for the video instruction. With the drills you suggested, I now know what the swing should feel like.
Great video! I will be implementing these drills into my practice routine! As soon as the snow melts!
How’d it go?
I really do enjoy these Videos Jim?
Can these exercises be applied to the driver also?
Superb video. Thanks so much for these tips. Especially coming way to inside on backswing.
One of the better instruction videos out there as far as easy to follow/non complicated sounding tips and drills. Thanks for posting.
Best slice fixer.
Great advice. Thanks
phenomenal advice.....
The "pull the right foot back drill" really helped me. It makes me wonder though. Why not always swing this way, only with the right foot pulled back just a few inches? Would that lead to other problems?
Its not a balanced stable stance distance will be hindered
Will try this today.

Very informative. Thank you.

Thanks gonna give this a try. Appreciate the help
Some teachers say pulling the club down is bad. How do you swing your arms more from the top without pulling on the club?
Fantastic video! Thank you so much!
Is hitting 4 to 6 inches behind the ball. Is this over the top ? I’ve broke 2 club heads from bashing the ground so hard.
Good lesson 👏👏👏👏👏👏
Thank you for sharing! Looking forward to going to the range!
Yep, I have seen you next to tiger woods on Sunday!! Great success.
thank you . Best drill
