    I loved this movie. I think it's the most emotionally charged Star Wars story to date.

      I don't, it was brutal, but DANM was it effective, both him, and for the message, that the worst is yet to come, but it won't be dark for much longer.

      I don't know even if it were a few minutes longer I would be happy I just felt like it was too short for such a hyped scene that we were promised

    after seeing this movie, after seeing how the star wars universe was represented, i have to say that i now dislike the force awakens even more, this movie had better cinematography, better use of charters and themes, better cgi, better visuals, more goosebump moments, it was just an overall better movie,

      the movie it self have many meh things in the beginning with the character introduction though. It is moving too fast in the first half for me. But the other half was pure awesome! The ending was the best!

    • @AJDOLDCHANNELARCHIVE
      @AJDOLDCHANNELARCHIVE 7 лет назад

      Complete opposite for me, all those things you consider better are all the things I think this film was lacking... Just felt like a generic modern sci-fi action movie, with Star Wars "skins"... just didn't have much of a dramatic or emotional imapct for me, and the score really fell short for me... still am glad it exists as a bit of the Star Wars lore/canon and a film, just fell short of my expectation, I absolutely think the Force Awakens was masterfully made.

    • @AJDOLDCHANNELARCHIVE
      @AJDOLDCHANNELARCHIVE 7 лет назад +1

      maccajoe The whole Star Wars Saga is about repeating cycles and the different choices that can be made during lifetimes and generations in the Skywalker family... the whole mythology is setup in a circle story format.. even The Phantom Meance contains many similar points to A New Hope and The Force Awakens, such as young person in the desert is found and taken away from there poor/misforunate life and learn the ways of the force(Anakin as a kid, Luke, and Rey), the mentor type person is killed (Qui-Gonn, Obi-Wan, and Han Solo). They end up destroying a large superweapon (Anakin and the trade federation controlship, Luke and the Deathstar, Poe and Starkillerbase, but initiated by Rey and the others).

    After watching Rogue One, I was reminded of the phrase "Unsung Hero." For such a rag-tag group of guerrilla fighters to sacrifice so much and get very little or no acknowledgement of this in the subsequent trilogy makes the "medal ceremony" in "A New Hope" so bitter/sweet. Yeah, Luke launched the torpedo in the exhaust vent, but a crap-load of people died to provide that information. And there isn't even a monument, a wall, a statue, or a 40oz of malt liquor on the curb for them. "Unsung," indeed.

      I think it would have to do with the team "Rogue One" not being an official Rebel Alliance team. They were never assigned the mission nor were they even brought together for the mission. Technically there was no mission. They went rogue from the rebellion kind of like what Saw did and decided to tackle it alone. It wasn't until the attack started that the rebel alliance joined in since it's already started might as well help out. They were afraid of the mission specifically because it would start a war between the Empire and the Rebels. Can't go back once the war is sparked even if it was not officially them who started it. Kind of like what happened in Rise of the Planet of the Apes.

      I'm sure the pilots from the space fight poured out some liquor when they got back to Gavin 4.
      And actually, they're not unsung now. A movie was made about them from the Journal of the Wills. That's why R2 had be there. He's the keeper of the Whills who upload the story of Star Wars in the new Jedi temple in the future for us to all know.
      If you're not familiar, check out the Journal of the Whills.

      What you cite summarizes how I emotionally processed this movie. It's the unsung heroes, the subtle melancholy. Not the broad bright emotional strokes that folks seem to expect out of typical characterization in movies these days.

    I was blown away by these CGI characters, I mean c'mon, that came TOTALLY out of nowhere !! People talking a big deal about Vader, yeah those scenes were pretty nice but c'mon, a dead guy coming back on the screen as a character from decades ago was mind blowing. I was like "oh sure, we're gonna see Tarkin's head just like in Episode 3, chill." Then he turns around and he basically is like a main character in the movie. The same with Princess Leia, I was blown away that this ended basically at the beginning of Episode 4 (I'm just gonna call it 5 from now on). You hit all the right points in this review, my heart was overjoyed by that ending, when I saw that white hallway I was like "yep, this is going to lead directly into a new hope."
    It makes me SO sad that this is a stand alone movie and that we're not going to have more of these movies. Can we have a movie now between Episode 3 & Rogue One haha? That's going to confuse the shit out of everyone.

      Joey ! Me too... Cannot believe everyone died there on Scarif. Except t Rebel fleet luckily. However, ter escape for hyperspace were cut off, when an imperial star destroyer(It's where Darth Vader was on board) appeared out of hyperspace. They destroyed just half the fleet and disabled an Mon Calamari command ship. Most of the smaller ships & 1 Nebula frigate managed to escape & while t command ship was still stocked on space. That which forced all t crewmembers to abandoning the ship and then transferring themselves by aboarding the "Tantive IV"(It's where Princess Leia was on board), also along with the Death Star plans with them. Luckily they managed to escaped barely. And then the corvette ship is setting their course for Tattooine. That is where t story of "A New Hope" begins....

    Episode 4 acknowledges the death of the Rouge One crew.
    Vader states that Leia is the last one with knowledge of the plans.
    This implies that others once had that knowledge and have died.
    How did Lucas know to add that line back then?

      hey, we have been told THAT vader is supposed be a menacing force. the ending of rogue one was the only real demonstration as to why he got that reputation.
      we need a trilogy about vader, explaining his growth from the angst in the suit, to the rogue one clip.
      because he was highly into the religious aspect of the force, it could show how searched fro relics, and experimentation with directing his direction. where he moves from being a loose cannon, to a vertiable boogyman.
      how he actually gets power, not through politics, but given positions and his aura just eliminating people making vacuums that puts him up.
      just like what yoda did to luke, his relics and his exploits work hand in hand to lead him UP, into the dark forces. he has a very etherial inspirations,
      he is like a powerful angry teenager, but so unknown that it doesnt spread, and his power too dire to be mocked for any amount of time.
      during, u will see flashes of his humanity. but in the third film it actually helps calms or settles him, in some way, to get a master level command of the dark force.

    I disagree, Darth Vader is one of those villains; with a character design which will continue not to be outdated. We can thank Ralph Mqarrie for that. He looked far from cheesy, he looked monstrous in this movie. For the first time in his cinema history, he looked terrifyingly imposing. I'm guessing it was the build of the actor beneath the suit

      Yep. A few scenes is one thing. A whole movie is something different.
      Plus Moff Tarkin only stood and talked. Han would be engaged in a lot of action. That would be a massive amount of difficult animating. Not impossible, but it would be difficult both physically and financially.

      If you think about those who criticize the sympathy of the characters and them dying it actually IS better that way.... a lot of people wonder about the connection between Episode III and IV.... having great characters that die could be crazy and leave a bad taste. It's good that we don't care A LOT for the characters that died.... because that's what Rogue One is and should be... about a small group and nothing more. IF that's what they were aiming for it's welcomed to me that not one person shines over the others. Let Luke, Han Solo and Leia still remain as the main key characters that should be remembered most.

    Grace, the ending has another more pressing flaw.
    If Leia and the Tantive IV have been there at that Battle and just barely escaped with the plans, then the first conversation between her and Vader in ANH makes no sense anymore.
    Because then he would have asked "If this is a counselors ship, then what were you doing in a rebel attack fleet?"

      She says: "I am member of the imperial senate on a diplomatic mission to Alderaan".
      How can she sell this to Vader after what happened in Rogue One?
      Where her ship just barely escaped destruction and Vader and his Star Destroyer right on their heels.
      Just doesn't work.

    I hate that Episode 7 totally invalidated the Rebel Alliance's achievement in defeating the Empire by creating the First Order from nowhere and basically making them every bit as powerful as the Empire that Luke and co. overthrew.
    J.J. Abrams, that was possibly the lamest of your decisions. Just to completely undermine the achievements of the original-trilogy characters. *Wookie-sized facepalm.*

    • @vivanlascosas7652
      @vivanlascosas7652 7 лет назад +3

      Yep. This movie made me realize how I don´t care at all about the new trilogy. The characters were "cute and funny" and almost flawless, and Finn was not needed at all. The fights were lame, except maybe the lightsaber duel and the Falcon against TIE fighters, but I hated the moment were Rey jut closed her eyes. Kylo should´ve won that duel, and the planet being destroyed should´ve saved her. Also the fact that the story was unoriginal made the movie joyless, only saved by the fast pace and conveniences and lack of seriousness.

    I think Rogue One is one of the BEST Star Wars movies - almost as good as Empire.
    I love how desperate the battle is - how they all sacrifice everything for the greater good - love how Jyn is a cynical mercenary and how she changes. Love how she and Cassian only connect at the end with a deep connection beyond word or petty romance. So Epic. Just a great movie.

    Vader's costume was not the same as the original. His mask was slightly different also. He looked far less imposing and threatening in this movie. Even hia stature was different. Loved the review. On Chirrut Imwe I got the impression that he either failed the jedi trials and wasn't taken as an apprenctice or was hampered by his blindness and was left stuck as a guard of the the temple. Maybe he wasn't trained at all even though he was force sensitive. Possibly he felt guilty due to order 66 and he became truly devout and sought to honor the jedi best he could even though he was never properly trained. Basically he could be force sensitive and gone to school but drop outs and failures often served the order in other capacities amongst the varies branches and divisions of the Jedi.

    Really appreciate the list of character names because I found them a bit hard to remember during the film except for the ones that were repeated more often. I agree with just about everything here. My favorite part was the star destroyer collision, that was so freaking cool. Great naval tactics in action, and the destruction of the two ships and then the gate was stunning to look at. Probably the best bit of action I've ever seen in a Star Wars film since the Episode IV opening.
    Did you notice the "Red leader standing by - Gold leader standing by - watch out for the towers" bit? Recycled unused footage from the original film? I spotted that instantly. So cool.

    Riz Ahmed is becoming the new Sean Bean! He seems to die in every film. :) Seriously though, as an English person, I always root for him, he's becoming an exceptional screen presence. On Peter Cushing, whilst I applaud the ingenuity, like you, I'm a little uneasy about this idea. Would it really have harmed the film if they had just used the actors face? Does it matter THAT much that there would be a different actor playing Tarkin in Rogue one and A New Hope? It isn't as if films do not recast actors, and in this very movie they have a different actress playing Mon Mothma. I'm sure I will enjoy it tho', for the curiosity if nowt' else! Excellent review Grace, I do not always agree with you but you are never less than succinct. Best wishes from sleepy Suffolk. :)

    "Star Dust" was her nickname, but did anyone else catch the fact that when the Deathstar explodes in a New Hope, it literally resembles star dust? I think Gaelyn intentionally named it to resemble his desired outcome. Like naming a secret weapon plan "Big Boom" or something similar. If it was intentional, which I think it was, then that was a very clever touch by the writers, and another fantastic connection between the two films.

    You are spot on when you talk about Galen not taking credit for his abilities and thinking anyone can do the job. In the Catalyst novel it shows that many of his peers attempt to recreate his experiments with using the crystals for power development to disastrous results. That Galen seems to be the only one who can do this and Krennic knows that without Galen, the Death Star project cannot succeed. So Krennic is forced to rely on Galen even though Galen is less than willing to create such a weapon, and multiple times Erso causes setbacks with the project that frustrate Krennic and prevent his promotion like he wants.

      I hate it when they do that. Everything in a trailer should be in the movie. False advertising otherwise. Annoying.

    20 years on there are no jedi but there are still force sensitive people. chirrut obviously one of them. the force didn't disappear just the jedi order.

    You forgot to mention how they added stock footage from some of the original 1977 X-Wing pilots into the movie. Both Red Leader and Gold Leader were the same characters from the Death Star battle in Episode 4. I thought that was neat. There were a couple of others too that I can't remember. One guy even looked like Biggs. But no Porkins. :)

    I thought the digital Peter Cushing was a ballsy move, but it also shows that the technology is still not quite there yet.
    It is just tiny nuances that make the face feel artificial. And maybe I'm remembering things wrong but Tarkin felt to tall in this movie. I remember him being shorter.
    And I wonderered why Orson Krennic is in the movie at all. And I think the answer is that they reallized that a fully digitial Peter Cushing could still not hold up enough screen time. So they divised Krennic as a work-around while still trying to get as much Tarkin into the movie as possible.
    Don't get me wrong I loved what Ben Mendelsohn did with the character, it is just that if you really break it down, Krennic is not necesarry and could be completely replaced by Tarkin.

    The movie was good but tbh, the characters were really poorly written that we barely got to know them. Thats why the emotional aspects of the movie didn't work

      For me the film was highly emotional and I was really drawn into it. Got teary eyed

    • @dimavasilev5342

      Strongly agreed. Just a few snippets could have fleshed out their characters and actually given emotional impacts. Honestly, it just felt like laziness in the script.

      Agreed. Couldn't remember a single name. I understand you can't give too much development due to time restraints but then maybe reduce the number of characters. I thought the Imperial robot was pretty cool. K2 I think the name was. IP was pretty awesome too

      Keep in mind that this was something of a war movie. Watch a ton of war movies and you'll see about the same amount of character development in those. It is just a matter of not having enough time. Personally, I expected that, so I wasn't disappointed... in fact, I even said how impressed I was at how well they actually were developed and likable considering how briefly we knew them.

      KabukiKid I feel the same. It made me think about war, and anonymous people die... This is not a perfect movie, but as far as I see, it is the best since EP.V

    "History of characters of color not great", "black voodoo characters we see all the time in movies". Maybe I took it wrong but Grace please stop being completely insensitive when it comes to comments about "characters of color". It started when you pull these statistics about black movie goers out of your ass in your movie math videos and you consistently make insensitive comments about certain characters that might slightly offend the black viewers of your videos. I love you Grace and I love your videos but I feel like their should be more careful or at least more strategic in the comments or the context of the comments you seem to not have any responsibility for.

    • @andrewmerriweather77
      @andrewmerriweather77 7 лет назад

      Adama Sanogo like I said. I love Grace. Pushing for diversity and being insensitive about comments on black characters is completely different. 90-95% of movies have a European lead. And she said "black voodoo characters we see all the time in movies". My comment was made on Grace's video not yours. I love Grace and will continue to watch her videos but I will not argue with a troll coming to her defense, especially when I know she didn't make the comment maliciously. Even if insensitivity is subconscious it still needs to be addressed

    • @sanogoadamagyram8166
      @sanogoadamagyram8166 7 лет назад

      Andrew Merriweather Now why you call me a troll? I didn't been rude toward you. You should fix your paranoia. I didn't attack you plus this comment is a direct to movie industy wich always put black characters in boxes nothing was insensitive since she didn't adress black actor or said something mean toward them you should learn to analyse a sentence before starting giving lessons.
      Now I'll leave you recover in your safe space.

    • @andrewmerriweather77
      @andrewmerriweather77 7 лет назад

      Adama Sanogo maybe you aren't a troll but you are obviously confused about "paranoia", her comment comes from the universal (subconsciously insensitive) concept of black actors in boxes (particularly "black voodoo") that is exactly what I'm saying. You should learn to analyze what you plan to say before you actually prove my "paranoia" correct. I knew what she meant to say. She didn't relay the message correctly is what I'm saying, if you actually read what I said.

    • @sanogoadamagyram8166
      @sanogoadamagyram8166 7 лет назад

      Andrew Merriweather I'm sorry are you genuinely convinced black actors aren't put in boxes anymore. (Yes things eveolve but not that fast) plus she denounced it cause Forest Whitaker was put in a box! You maybe poorly understand it but her comment wasn't made toward black actors so she didn't push an idea wich lead to the oppression she actually call out this bad Hollywood habit. This is the problem you didn't saw to whom this message was directed.

    Thank you for your review. I had actually wrote this movie off because the trailers made it look like it was all about Jyn Erso. It is also refreshing to hear that there they were willing to sacrifice so many characters in order to advance the story.

    Now that the trilogy is over, we can all agree that rouge one was the best Star Wars movie that Disney put out. At the time I had a lot of hope but was let down by the mess of the writers/directors of the trilogy. Moving forward I think Disney will be able to make a better set of movies looking back at rogue one.
