    SPOILERS: The thing that bothers me more than anything else, is that Kylo got absolutely wooped by Rey at the end. How are we supposed to buy him as a credible threat, if he gets thrashed by someone who has never even used a lightsaber before, and has only used the force for about an hour???Where's the tension for next time they meet? She will be even stronger then and beat him without breaking a sweat. I think that's a huge problem.

      Him killing Han goes a long way in establishing him ad a credible threat. If Han can die, no one is safe.

      +BanditIncorporated You didn't get that when Kylo had her pinned on the ground and told her she needed training, she did the whole mind-reading thing she did earlier, except this time she took his swordfighting skills?

    • @MattMcloughlin
      @MattMcloughlin 9 лет назад +43

      +BanditIncorporated For me I saw it as Rey was letting the force flow through her and let it guide her, as opposed to her consciously fighting.

    • @sebrussell
      @sebrussell 9 лет назад +53

      Well, he seemed to be toying with both her and Finn to start with, all the while he was bleeding out and limping from the shot he took from Chewy's bowcaster (a weapon that was purposefully shown to be much more powerful than a regular blaster). Added to that, Finn managed to land a shot before Rey even started to fight him. He was badly hurt, and she was still fighting on the defensive until she managed to get her connection to the Force working. He also didn't seem to be in a strong place emotionally (at least, that's how it looked to me) so all in all, Rey had every advantage and barely beat him, so it does give the impression that if they face each other again on equal footing, Rey will need a lot of training to survive.

    • @DislocatedDesign
      @DislocatedDesign 9 лет назад +4

      +BanditIncorporated I totally agree. I walked out of there thinking Kylo was pretty pathetic, not at all that threatening. Killing Han was obvious and easy. It's like his powers started off impressive and then turned to mist. As soon as this isolated, forest fight between the three of them started, away from intervention, I knew Kylo was done for because my mind couldn';t help notice it as staged and automatically did a quick calculation as to the outcome in this situation - nope Kylo isn't winning tonight. But when it was over so quick, it seemed, it was almost humiliating but maybe that's the point for further development in the next two Episodes. Adam Driver acted well - the achievements of Kylo as a character were scant to say the least. Bumbling sort of.

    It was no surprise for me that kylo killed his father. Just as luke had to face his father to become a jedi. Kylo had to kill han to prove he a sith.

      +vegetta00 This is actually one of my biggest issues with this film. Snoke is basically a Sith Master type of character to Kylo Ren who is like the new Sith apprentice but only technically. It is like Anakin brought balance to the force by destroying the Emperor and himself as Darth Vader for that whole Sith dynamic to be rehashed in TFA--only they put a different name on it...The Knight's of Ren??? Gimme a break....

    • @m.c.martin
      @m.c.martin 9 лет назад

      Knights can also be guards, so it seems they would protect Snoke.
      Kylo Ren is basically Sith in ancestry, due to Vader being his Grandfather

      +Jim Alexander Have you seen the films? Given that Luke at the end of RotJ burns his father in a pyre before it pans off to celebrations of the victory of the Battle of Endor? That was not even a Special Edition edit, that was in the original film.

  • @swanny6517
    @swanny6517 9 лет назад +303

    What are you talking about? The movie is about the new characters, not han. Sorry. Han solo is my fav character, but ive been speculating about his death for months. Was obiwan the main character of the originals? No. This trilogy is about rey, finn, and poe. Leia will just be the mothma general type (not really much screen time), luke will train someone and probably die soon after, and chewy will hopefully stay and be Rey's best buddy and eventually die in a very said death at the end of 9. All of the deaths give more weight to the trilogy, if you really thought or wanted han to be the main character you are insane.

    • @swanny6517
      @swanny6517 9 лет назад +37

      And its kinda obvious han sacrificed himself, similar to obiwan. He went to his son like han solo would. That was his son, not a random villain. He loves him. He approached him knowing he will become his son again and join him, or he will kill him. He was willing to take that chance because he is a real man and knew he had to fix his parenting mistakes that have been haunting him since he left leia.

      +Mike Swan Exactly! Rey now has a reason to fight, before she was detached from the world. Han is someone Rey looked up to as a father figure, killing him makes her invloved. It makes her angry at kylo, you know she wants to get even now. Its funny how alot of people dont see that.

    I gotta disagree with you about the re-watchability and the action. I was on the edge of my seat almost all the time, expect the TIE Fighter and X-Wing battle in the Starkiller base. Also I love that J.J. didn't heavily choreograph the lightsaber duels. It felt real, and I got a sense of danger and the stakes mattered for me. But, yes this film does play like a Star Wars: Greatest Hits soundtrack, yes I thought if they were gonna kill off Han, he should have died in the sequel.

    • @keeganstevenson6795
      @keeganstevenson6795 9 лет назад +3

      +Samuel Shin I was only on my seat in the Han death scene even though when he stepped out i was like, oh he is so dead, when Kylo started acting like he was torn, I didnt want Kylo to bitch out and be a good guy. all the trilogies mirror each other, so when Kylo mentioned to Rey that Han is the father you never had, you werent missing out on much. I thought of Qui-Gon Jinn when he became a father figure to Anakin. and in Episode 4 when Obi-Wan became a father figure to Luke. its the tradition that the new jedi has to loss their father figure early in each trilogy, so i was more scared on that bridge that Kylo wasnt going to kill Han. I liked Kylo a lot but i did want him to die though seeing that he wasnt good enough to be Vader and dying in agony, i would of enjoyed that but id like to see him keep going all the same. hopefully Kill Luke and turn Rey to the darkside. I dont feel satisfied by a happy ending i guess haha

    • @takanara7
      @takanara7 9 лет назад +3

      +Samuel Shin I know her saying there wasn't any action made no sense at all, This movie was almost _all_ action. Maybe she just didn't notice it because it was practically omnipresent. You had the raid on the village, you had the awesome Falcon flight through the star destroyer, you had the _Aliens_ like scene on Han's cargo ship, the fight above the watering hole, And of course we had the space battle above the star killer. (Well, it was a battle with space ships inside of an atmosphere) and of course the lightsaber fight between Kylo and Rey.
      These characters aren't Kryptonians who can be smashed through buildings without, like, dying (I mean we see Kylo Renn in real pain from the blaster shot, we see Rey knocked unconscious, Fin gets his shoulder burned, etc) These people aren't superheros, The Force doesn't prevent you from getting your head caved in.
      Everybody hated that stupid Zack Snyder movie and the fight in Smallville between Zod and Superman was just a bunch of pointless CG with no real stakes because both of them are invulnerable and Snyder doesn't seem to worry much about civilian casualties.

    Are you kidding me? Kylo broke Disney's streak of terrible villians. The guy has so much more power than any other jedi/sith we've seen. He froze a laser bolt! I'd hate to see his force lightening. I'm looking forward to seeing his story.

    • @Cawcawcachoo
      @Cawcawcachoo 9 лет назад +4

      ***** I agree. In my eyes Kylo is the villian I've been waiting to see. He is obviously not even fully trained. I could see the Vader worship as being something Snoke put into his head. Snoke probably told him how Vader was the most powerful Sith, join me and you'll be more powerful than he ever was. Then Rey comes along and makes him question himself. She's probably the first jedi he's fought. He realizes he isn't as powerful as he'd been led to believe. I think that's why Snoke tells the general to bring him in for more training. Maybe Snoke, knowing how powerful Kylo could be, thats why he didn't complete his training. He knows that he can't defeat a fully trained Kylo. Who knows? At least JJ left us room to speculate, unlike Lucas did with Darth Maul.

    • @KermiTonberry

      +Dinosaur pilot I honestly don't get any of the hate on Kylo Ren. It's so plainly obvious that he's supposed to parallel Anakin in Revenge of the Sith. I'm excited to see him really step into his powers and become "Vader" by Episode IX. And then Han dying? Who cares if Harrison Ford requested it or not? His death is good for the parallels they were going for and it's necessary for the focus to go completely towards the new cast.

    • @martfp88
      @martfp88 8 лет назад +4

      +Dinosaur pilot I really like Kylo but I don't think he is the most powerful yet, his training is incomplete and he was still between the dark and the light until the end of the movie, I think the genius thing about Kylo is that we will be following him through his journey of becoming a powerful Sith at the same time that we follow and will be following the journey of Rey towards the light.

    To me killing Han Solo was a perfect decision because it's called Star WARS. In real life, in real wars people die. If none of the main characters die then there is no tention during the other fights. If you only kill characters you don't like then you will have no emotional attachment. They have multiple main characters, so that there are still othere characters to root for. You might say that whats the point in adding real things that happen in real life to a fantasy slash sci-fi film. Well basically if you add real stuff like that it can make all of these stories with weirs aliens and planets relatable which makes is transcend fantasy and sci-fi.

      poontang3zizo calling people "morons" isn't that nice. And it's late and I won't go into detail on why assuming a cut always implies a timejump isn't always correct. It also heavily depends on the way you cut it. The cut was too seemless to imply a major timejump. And let's not forget that Grace might have been not too serious when talking about that one scene. It would have been nitpicking on the highest level if she would downgrade the movie because of that. And let's not forget she isn't the only one that thought that for a split second.

    As for Han's death, I think it was logical, and necessary.
    This is a post "game of thrones" world we live in, where beloved characters are picked off left and right. In that light, I think it's okay for a 73 year old Han to die in this movie. And he doesn't die immediately, or in some stupid way.
    Han is the undisputed old hero in this movie. He is front and center. He is a kind of father/mentor to the younger characters. He's willing to give his life for the galaxy. He dies, in my mind, very bravely, because he's not afraid to face this son of his, who has crazy scary powers.
    He's also not too cynical or jaded to be a loving father, even after his son has delivered the death blow.
    He is so redeemed in this movie, and so handing off the torch.
    But the best part is that Han's reprise, in this movie is not stepped on by Luke.
    We will spend the next movie with Luke's reprise as a character... without any Han to mess that up either.
    They know exactly what they're doing this time around.

    I don't get why people are complaining about the Rey and Kylo fight. Kylo took a direct blast to his flank from the Bowcaster before the fight, a weapon which was hyped up for being really powerful all film, Han took out 2 stormtroopers with a single shot from it. So Kylo was badly hurt to begin with.
    Plus it wasn't as though Rey was some amateur fighter, she was surviving alone in a desert for most of her life, taking down multiple assailants at a time, as we saw in her fight in the beginning with those guys on Jakku.
    Yes she was using a staff then and not a lightsabre but the basics are the same, e.g balance and coordination, when to strike when to block etc. Plus Kylo is a clearly flawed villian, he has ambitions of power but that doesn't make him powerful, not yet at least. Rey showed she had more force power than him earlier when she reversed his torture and read his mind instead, where she learnt that his biggest fear was that he wouldn't live up to Vader's legacy. This makes him an interesting villain as he is reckless and still not fully trained as Snoke pointed out.
    Also people are judging the fight for not being as well choreographed as the prequels?? Seriously? Those fights were between experienced Jedi knights and experienced Sith lords, Rey hasn't had any force training, she seems to be able to tap into it naturally which means she might become one of the most powerful jedi ever! but at the moment she is not even a padawan let alone a jedi, and Kylo is no Sith Lord, he is a pretender in training, someone who wants to be a sith, he idolizes the sith, but he seems fairly week in the force at the moment. So with him badly injured and her a rank amateur, of course the fight is going to be alot scrappier and not as polished! It would have been ridiculous if it had been a highly choreographed fight!
    Also Beyond the Trailer seems to think that Han's death was pointless and for purely shock value, but i disagree. Kylo wants to be as powerful as Vader, that is his motivation, he probably thought that such a merciless act like killing his own father would cause him to be drawn deeper into the dark side. This is after all about the future of the franchise, Han was great in this, but he did his job and he did it well, we don't need him for all 3 films, the old cast are passing the torch, to me his death served a real purpose, it cemented the fact that Kylo was truely lost to the dark side, and now maybe he will grow stronger in the dark side and after Snoke finishes his training and he gets patched up, he might become real competition for either Luke or a newly trained Rey in the future movies.

    • @AndrewL31413
      @AndrewL31413 9 лет назад +1

      +Rogan Miller I think the better way to look at it is that Kylo is very immature in his training. You can see him act out in anger and it makes him look weak. Or that Rey must be extremely force sensitive. She could either be the daughter of Luke to be more powerful than Lei's daughter. Or she could be the new chosen one to redeem the jedi order, the most powerful since Anikan or what Anikan should have been before turning into Vader.

    • @tommymiller702
      @tommymiller702 9 лет назад +1

      +Andrew Lin Yeah i agree, Kylo is immature in his training, he lashes out when he doesn't get his own way. He is frustrated that he isn't more powerful than he is given his heritage. It makes for an engaging and unstable villian!
      I'm not sure yet if Rey will turn out to be Luke's daughter. She thought Luke Skywalker was a myth at the beginning, you could argue that he changes his name like Obi Wan became old Ben, but after Vader and Sideous were defeated there would be no reason for a Jedi to change his name? But saying that the Empire/New order still existed in some form, so maybe he did change it to avoid the attention his name would bring.
      I'd love it if she was his daughter. If she was abandoned on Jakku at age 4, that would mean Kylo started to rebel against Lukes training at the age of 14, as Adam is 10 years older than Daisy, so that seems possible. But the bit about it that makes the most sense to me is that Anakin was prophesiesed to bring "balance" to the force. you don't get a balance without both good and evil in equal measure. Vader had 2 children who were both good, there is no balance there, but with his grandchildren we have one good and one evil possibly, so the force is in balance once again, prophecy was correct!
      Or maybe i'm just over thinking this way too much. I can't help it, it feels good to be excited about Star Wars once again!

      Rogan Miller My problem with Han's death is it's way to predictable. Like I was sitting next to my friend and called it scene for scene. It was such a non Han solo way to die. No heroic fight to the death, no snarky remark. It was just done so poorly.
      I actually don't want Rey to be a be related to the skywalker family at all. I want her to have a brand new story line bc of how safe they played it with this movie. It hit all the right spots for star wars fan, and in my mind that was the weakness of the film. There was nothing new to it. Like i felt Like I've seen every scene with different characters in some point in 1-6, mostly 4-6 episodes. I loved it because it's star wars, and to go back into the world of star wars after how terribly 1-3 were done, this was great. But there was no real surprises or a scene that I fell in love with.

    • @tommymiller702
      @tommymiller702 9 лет назад +2

      +Andrew Lin I understand your point of view but i have to respectfully disagree. I fell in love with nearly every scene, because it was a return to the Star Wars universe i loved, not the mess that was the prequels. Did it scream of familiarity? Yes because it IS the same world. Tie fighters are fighting x-wings, there is a den of villainy filled with all sorts of weird aliens, but does that make it unoriginal or does that just enforce that this is the same universe at the originals?
      The only bit that did annoy me was the new death star, they could have come up with something new i agree. But apart from that i thought it was all new and interesting. The characters were what made it new and they were placed in a setting we all know and love. We have never seen a stormtrooper questioning his superiors in the empire before, we have never seen a villian who was this nuanced before, we have never seen a strong female character who actually fought her own battles rather than be saved by the men around her.
      You could argue that Rey's abandonment on Jakku was too similar to Lukes on Tatooine, but it makes complete sense if she does turn out to be his daughter. He knows that this technique of abandoning a child on a desert planet would mean she would grow up out of the eye of the empire because it happened to him! If she turns out not to be a skywalker then i agree with you that this would be too similar to a new hope, but i hope she is lukes daughter.
      They did play it safe in this movie, but safe is good, safe is letting us know we are back in the universe we love. They can then build on this safe start to go into new story arcs for episodes 8 and 9.
      Now about Han's death. Again i'm afraid i have to disagree with you. Han isn't the same man he was 30 years ago, you have to understand that he is now filled with guilt that his own son is going around the universe slaughtering innocent "people". There were times in the film were he was back to his jokey space pirate ways, but he now carries a heavy burden. He wouldn't go down in a space battle with a snarky remark, he wins every battle. The only way he would be willing to lower his defenses would be with someone he still loved, who he thought he could talk around.
      I didn't think it was done poorly. Han was stepping onto that walkway knowing full well what might happen. He knew his son was now evil and that he might kill him, but he knew also that this was going to be his only chance to reason with him. Han felt guilty about what he had created, so it was worth risking his life to try and put things right. There is nothing stronger in the universe than a parents love for their child. Vaders love for luke eventually pulled him back from the dark side. So Han knew he had to try to bring Ben back from the dark side. He was under no illusion that this might cost him his life, but it was his duty to try. It would have completely destroyed the moment if he'd made some joke or quip, a simple touch to the face was enough to let his son know that he forgives him and that he still loves him. It was a perfect moment for me, and it is one that will play on Kylo's mind. Was it a bit predictable? Yes I suppose it was, but that diminish the emotion of the scene for me. Han's death provides so much motivation for Rey and Finn to hate Kylo, and it provided the act that Kylo hoped would bring him closer to Vader and draw him deeper into the dark side.

      Timothy Bradford It's not a perfect movie, i'm not arguing that, i can only go by how i felt watching it and to me it was a fun thrilling ride of a movie, full of nostalgia, humor and intrigue. It can only be viewed in context once the other 2 are finished as there are loads of unanswered questions, but that doesn't make it bad, that just made me want to know more. Can you elaborate what the flaws are you noticed?

      Your absolutely right.. I think Where she goes off the wagon is in not seeing or fully understanding the story justifications for his death and then somehow rationalizing that Disney should not of allowed this to happen after they paid so much money for the rights to Star Wars. She attacks the decision to kill Han as a decision not made in service to the story but then somehow in the same breath laments that Disney would not put Han in the second film and what a poor business decision it was . So an argument to throw Han in the second movie is to make Disney more money?? That isn't a decision made in service to the story... Disney bought rights to all things STAR WARS not just to Han Solo. Disney would much rather prefer the franchise successfully introduce a young cast of new heroes who can bring the story forward well into the future. Continually having to rely on a aging character in his mid 70's would of been a terrible decision... Ok my rants done.

    Apparently I'm in the minority here, I thought Hans death was well done and was good for the franchise. It helped kylo character, helped the focus to be on the new characters and gave the movie a memorable moment.
    Kylo was a character still in transition, killing his father was a huge step towards the dark side (which he was still struggling with). This movie itself was a transition from the original trilogy to the sequels. This movie really was Hans movie, so his death allows it to move on to the new generation. Ford might have wanted it to happen, but within the story, i think it works really well.

      +The Lords Chosen The Resistance thought it had the same vulnerabilities and they found out when they attacked that was insanely wrong. The thing they needed to take out was so well protected it too an act of sabotage to open it up for attack.
      The Starkiller was a real planet that had been rebuilt into weapon instead of a weapon built to be the size of a small planet. They also came right out of hyperspace and under their radar, as Finn pointed out.
      And Phasma probably thought/knew that anything the Resistance could bring was too little to take out whatever their target was.

    I've never been a fan of these reviews, it's criticism with almost no merit. The audacity to imply that J.J. Abrams and all the dedicated Star Wars fans working on this movie would solely make a decision about the fate of a pivotal character on an actor's misgivings? No, of course they did it in the interest of the story. It makes sense, Han's story is finished, he's an amazing character, but there is no point in dragging out his arc just because he's "the face of Star Wars". These movies should be compelling without relying on iconic characters to carry them. I understand it's upsetting that he's gone but it seems like calling his death a bad storytelling decision and cheap just seems unfair. I thought the scene was brilliant, it established the primary villain and gave us a reason to hate and feel sorry for him, as well as saying farewell to a character that needed to pass the torch and give a certain finality to the story, which could've easily also been done at the end of "Empire".

      Han Solo's death was meaningful and fit the story well....that other bullshit I just mentioned was just a complete waste of time. It could have been cut entirely from the movie and it wouldn't have changed the plot ONE BIT.

      yeah, and it was the most epic of endings for him in terms of story. A true tragedy as I wrote on another commenter.
      Killed by his own son, who was trained by Luke, who is now the champion of the dark side. That is some heavy epic shit. Han Solo, even before his end he does not run away from a "fight". He is in the thick of it to his last.
      Perhaps this was his character evolution and karma. A guy that cared about no-one, always looking out for his skin and waiting for the chance to escape or fly off, gets attached, begins to feel for friends and people, becomes the hero. His end, came from him not fleeing, and from feeling too much now, for the one person he could really feel for.
      What an epic ending to his tale.

      +Matt Green I would respectfully argue though, that as fans we are a little entitled to selfishness when it comes to our fandom.. I don't feel bad for wanting Harrison Ford to stay on for the other two movies, (or at least one more). And he's not retiring from acting all together (at least as far as I/imbd knows), so I don't see why he couldn't stay on for another movie or two. That's my two cents any way.

      because (unless I am mistaken) SW fans have annoyed the shit out of him for so many years. He has done so much work and been in so many films and being recognised mostly as Han Solo becomes annoying.
      He probably had a lot of fun doing this project, and more than he thought he would, but I can also bet he is even happier to leave it finally behind him and say "there, Han is DEAD".
      You seen any interviews with him?
      "Who shot first?"
      "I don't... care!"
      That is the response of someone that can't be bothered with all these crazy fandom bs. He doesn't care. It was a paycheck. He is a human being and 30 years of this going on was enough for him I think.
      He handled his last appearance grandly I would say and finally embraced it. In a sense I think he completed a personal circle in his career as well.
      That is why he couldn't stay for another movie or two. Getting him back for the one was already too much for him to say yes to initially. And that should be even more understandable I think.
      As the actor whose portion or side to his career has been ruined from all these crazy fans, I would respectfully argue that he is entitled to more selfishness than the fans.

      Sir Lancelot Mcbutt You got me. I am in awe of the selections. It's mind boggling.
      Forget Star Wars.
      Ex Machina is one of the most brilliant sci fi films to come out in years, a FAR better movie than The Martian, which is a "good" movie, but perhaps the most overrated movie of the year.
      Ex Machina is everything you want from a film. It should be taught at film school.
      At least they recognized it for "best original screenplay."
      The Martian, which goes on about Matt Damon bitching about disco music and other tired cliche lines of "comedy" is no where near as a good a film as Star Wars or Ex Machina.
      Now I know why it was selected as "best comedy" at the Golden Globes, because this is a joke.
      It is a good adaptation from a very good book, it is not a thrilling piece of work as a stand alone film. It can't touch Star Wars or Ex Machina with a 20ft pole.
      These award shows are becoming dumbed down, due to criticism of how the Academy judges are "out of touch" with the common moviegoer. This move is purely political to show how "in touch" they are.
      They avoid Star Wars, because it is too popular, they avoid Ex Machina, because it is not popular enough. "But wait, look, ah, there is the perfect statement to make, a universally agreed upon "solid" movie that most 'common moviegoers' enjoyed. Yeah, pick that one, that'll get our reputation back on track."
      Oh well, anything that deals with money becomes corrupted eventually.
      The Martian isn't 1/10th as fun a ride as Star Wars. Nor does it tell 1/10th as good a story as Ex Machina.

Episode 2 66% and only 59% from people and the there is Episode 1 that only got 55% and only 60% from people on rotten tomatoes. So you were saying about those high scores... Uh huh. My original comment was more towards the lady taking stabs at JJ Abrams and that clearly the work he didnt on this movie wasnt bad at all. So far it looks at least good. Maybe not great or perfect but good at least. Unless everyone dropping a comment on my first comment is trying to say that the movie sucked. Then thats a different argument

Who knows if they made the right decision, we wont know until we see ep 8&9 and we really want a han solo scene or some dialogue alluding to him. I get it, now he's just dead... Its the easy road for the writers, gets harrison out of the franchise like he wanted and sets up some other story arch. SPOILER: I hated the movie. One of the things I hated about the movie was Rey. That was the most rushed character ever. We come to know her as someone who only heard some vague stories about Jedi and knows very little about them and even had doubts about them and the reality of the Force. Never in her life has she ever even laid eyes on a lightsaber. When one day she happens to see one she literally runs away from it. Then when confronted by a man who is clearly competent with using the Force, who has been trained to use a lightsaber, who was actually trained by Luke Skywalker himself (Kylo Ren)....for some bullcrap reason she summons the power of the Force like a master and fights with skill and finesse and defeats a trained force user. Rushed. Phony. Absolute crap. In the original series Luke didn't become a powerful Jedi as a deus ex machina. He gets a little training from Obi-Wan. Then a lot of training from Yoda. He tries to stand up to Vader and Vader basically plays cat and mouse with him and defeats him. Luke goes back for more training (though he's told at that time he's done with training). It took 3 movies before he got up to snuff to pose a threat to other trained Force users (Vader and the Emperor). Rey does it in just a few minutes time. Crap. Crap Crap.

      +Wiser InTime totally agree with you and what i have been saying. Fanboys will not accept any criticism though. Daisy Ridley actually did a great job but writers ruined her character, they really did. One of the cool things about Darth Vader and Luke was watching them progress as jedi, watching them learn how to use the force. The way they handled Luke in original trilogy was perfect, in first movie he could hardly use the force, in second he was trained by Yoda but was yet not fully trained and then by 3rd film, he was powerful. Rey just became a powerful jedi without knowing anything and without any training. So what will luke teach Rey in episode 8? 'oh, you are already as powerful as i am Rey, you train me please' So dumb and cheap but i guess i'm not a young kid anymore and this movie was pretty much made for younger generation. I guess the idea is - make the new generation more powerful than the past, new kids will love it. JJ and writers were thinking box office $$ and making a better throughout out, better written movie took a back seat.

      +raiyzo “spades” jr I'm a huge fan (fan boy if you like) but this film just left me feeling flat. I can't believe that so many people who did nothing but complain about every minute detail of the prequels seem to absolutely love this movie. I was only disappointed in Ep 1 but I really enjoyed all the rest of the movies. This is the only movie that I absolutely hated. All the previous films made me want to see t hem again and I saw them multiple times in the theaters. I have absolutely no interest in seeing this movie again. Once was enough.

    • @ErikBlomqvistSwe
      @ErikBlomqvistSwe 9 лет назад +3

      +Wiser InTime But it seems like you're comparing Kylo Ren's skills to that of Darth Vader's. We don't know at what stage he went all emo during the training with Luke. And he's obviously still very unstable. For me, I saw a couple of things when Rey fought Kylo Ren in the woods:
      1. Kylo Ren had the overhand most of the time, until Rey started to going into another state of mind. Rey was basically throwing a few strokes and then ran away.
      2. Kylo Ren was badly wounded by the shot from Chewie.
      3. Kylo Ren had just killed his father.
      4. Kylo Ren knows how to use the force, but is not at all fully trained. Snoke confirms this a few times.
      Also, bare in mind that no one fought like the jedi masters/sith lords do, not from the prequels, nor from episode 5/6. I'm sure this will improve throughout the movies, as the characters improve.
      With all of this in mind, I definitely see it as less crap than you did and actually more believable.

    • @WiserInTime
      @WiserInTime 9 лет назад +3

      +Erik Blomqvist I agree they didn't show any virtuoso type fighting like in the prequels. That was a time where the Jedi were fully established, organized and training Jedi from the time they just little toddlers. Literally life long training. I'm glad they didn't show that level of skill. I don't mean to compare Kylo's skills to Vader's but Kylo did have some serious skill. They guy was freezing blaster rounds mid air and holding them there without seeming to concentrate on it at all. He did stuff like that effortlessly while he talked with other characters. He froze Rey in place too. He's a deeply disturbed guy but he was no slouch. Maybe Snoke though he needed more training but Kylo was powerful and doing stuff not seen in any other movie. But what I'm more critical of if Rey's speed of development. It's like sitting someone in front of piano who's only ever heard of a piano but never actually saw one then in about 5 minutes time is skillfully playing music. Way too rushed. She doesn't need training...she just needs 5 or 10 minutes of "I bet I can do this" and walla! She's doing Jedi mind tricks, using the Force to move objects, sword fighting and winning all the way. Finn was defeated by Kylo and Finn is a trained warrior. Rey was a tough cookie but not a trained fighter. In most of the Star Wars movies they talk about training. They've established this is stuff that takes time to develop. Rey doesn't need time. She just wins by showing up.

    • @raiyzojr5442
      @raiyzojr5442 9 лет назад +3

      Wiser InTime it was total BS and i laugh at the ones trying to defend how JJ made a mockery of the force by having Rey master mind control, moving objects and a lightsaber so easily... she not only had no training, she didn't even know what the force was. The people defending this are not true star war fans, impossible. True star war fans have an appreciation of the force and what it takes to learn it's ways, it's a power that is not easily mastered. Leia herself has the power, yet can't do anything cause she wasn't trained. Luke took 3 films to master it and Anakin (who in the prequels was said have more power than even Yoda) couldn't do what Rey could do until he received training. They really didm;t respect the force in this movie, they made it something that felt cheap and easy... why did they do it? For little kids... that's great but they should've struck a balance between kids and adults...

    I see that the butthurt fanboys are out in full force on this review. This is just like The Dark Knight all over again. If you think a movie that the lemmings love is bad, then you automatically need to be put in your place. The movie simply wasn't that good. It was a lesser copy/paste of the best elements from Ep. IV and V. Maz Kanata was a lame version of Yoda, Kylo Ren is a whiny version of Darth Vader, Deathstar is a Death Planet this time, etc. There was no need to kill off Han Solo and if you really wanted to kill off an original character let it be someone like Luke in either Ep. 8 or 9, not Han Solo in the very first outing. This film seemed to want to play its best cards in one go and splurge on all the best things that we remember from the three original films and for that reason it didn't feel as earned and the characters didn't have a believable progression. Killing Han Solo just to give way to the "new generation" would be like killing Indiana Jones so he can pass the torch to Shia Lebeouf or whoever, it feels cheap and cliche at this point since we've that sort of thing already with Obi Wan. Not everything needs to rhyme.
    Ultimately it was better than the prequels (which isn't saying much) but is still nowhere near as good as any of the original three. This film had some serious scripting issues, pacing problems and rushed character development. It's funny how the defenders will refute any criticism by saying, "it's assumed that _______" or "the film hints at ______". No, that's not a good way of excusing a film's flaws. The same people who say that are the same people who criticized films like Prometheus on similar grounds of not explaining everything enough. Many things in this film simply don't make sense and we're all supposed to throw logic to the wind because it's Star Wars. Never mind of course that the original three didn't have any of these issues at all and things were explained in context of the story not in awkward exposition or baseless speculation. 6.5/10 on this one.

      +SINATRA303 This is exactly how I feel after I left the movie theater. Every point you bring out is what I felt after watching the movie. I couldnt put it in words, but you successfully described what I felt point by point. i definitely felt the pacing problems and rushed character development as I was watching the movie. As a true Star Wars fan and a realist, ive had in my mind the possibility that these new movies would not live up to and even expand to another level from the originals. For a moment I thought that this movie would not fall into the shortfalls of remakes and the Jurassic Worlds but it did. Not going to deny that there was some good acting and the script was better than that of the prequels. The Millenium Falcon /Tie fighter chase in Jakku was an awesome scene. But yes definitely 6.5/10. Now going to rewatch the originals now...

    HOW THE FUCK IS KYLO REN LIKE ZUKO?! He has just made himself an irredeemable threat. The way I see it, Kylo Ren will be the Azula rather than the Zuko. Rages and complains when he doesn't get his way, a perfectionist who refuses to see things any other way but his own. Too confident in their own power. Yeah that's Azula and that's also Kylo Ren. The only difference is instead of mommy issues he had daddy issues.

    • @UchaNekome
      @UchaNekome 8 лет назад +4

      Kylo Ren First off, Zuko was anything but spoiled. He had a good heart, and was trying to do the right thing. But his father was an ass hole and burned his face for trying to stand up for what was right. Since then he was unsure what was right or wrong because he was abused by someone he thought he could trust and love. The anger came from his feelings of uncertainty. He didn't understand what he did wrong. Because he didn't DO anything wrong and was punished for it anyways. The difference here is Zuko was always a good person. All he wanted was love and acceptance, but his family (his father and sister) messed him up. Made him feel in order to achieve their acceptance he had to capture the Avatar. He learned he shouldn't HAVE TO gain love and acceptance from people who should already love you. That's why he decided to leave...that and his dad was going to commit genocide. Kylo Ren WANTED to be part of the dark side, and it seems to me, his family (other than his grandfather) had nothing to do with it. To Kylo Ren his feelings toward his family was a hindrance to his progression so he got rid of what was keeping him from moving forward. Zuko never killed his father, no matter how cruel, how terr able Ozi was the worst thing Zuko did was imprison him.

    Not disappointed to hear that Finn's not a Jedi, but I am really disappointed to hear that his character was relegated to the comic-relief role. There are enough black comic relief sidekicks in movies. I thought his character would be more substantial than that. It's been done to death. But it's cool to hear he did a good job, though. He's a talented actor from what I've seen in Attack The Block. Hopefully in the next Star Wars episode he'll be more than just comic relief and be given more substance.

      +beselbic No, Finn's not a Jedi, but he is the most courageous person in the movie. You can relate to him, and he does a lot of good things. Without him, the final attack on the First Order would not be possible, he rescues Rey by fighting Ren, and in that fight, which is way more realistic than the ninja stuff of the prequels, he has some succes against Ren. (not want to spoil too much). He is more like us, inexperienced, but making the right decisions and doing a hell of a job!

Also, Rey was silly and naive. Finn does hold his own against Kylo Ren. His character does have substance and is not just there for laughs. I do believe that in the following sequels, we will see him grow just as much as Rey.

    Let me say this, while I'm not a huge fan of Solo being killed off it was definitely the right thing to do. First of all Harrison Ford wanted to be killed off since like the 5th episode, do we really want someone who clearly doesn't love the franchise to continue on in an important role? Plus Harrison is getting quite old, how many more movies did you expect he'd be able to make? Lastly it made perfect sense for him to die at that spot because he was the Obi-wan of this film. Solo was the old man who took the younger cast under his wing and then they watched helplessly as he died. Really goes nicely with the first film right? Anyways yeah I wasn't prepared for him to die so soon, but the more I think about it the more it makes sense IMO

    Han Solo was NOT killed for shock value, it was specifically to give himself and Kylo Ren very important character development while serving as the film's dramatic weight. Killing main characters has never been profitable or easy to do for any popular franchise, and this scene carries too much meaning to be summarily dismissed by people who can't get over the fact that a beloved character could die.
    The Star Wars saga is greater than any one character, no matter how popular that character might be. Everyone dies, sometimes for no good reason at all. I take huge issue with the concept that certain plot points can't happen to certain characters just because of how "important" they are.

    4:00 "he didn't even have a funny thing to say"
    He was just impaled by his son. It's a heartbreaking scene. He shouldn't be saying something funny. Hell, the "I know" line from Strike's Back wasn't suppose to be funny. He knew she loved him and he didn't know how he felt about her or what to say but new he had to say something. It's a real honest moment.
    I get you don't like that he died, but it's an organic part of the movie that works. It works with his his character, it works with Kylo's character. More importantly it's a great character moment for both. Han Solo failed to be a proper father to his son, and paid the ultimate price for it. It make sense since Han Solo is a cool guy but would not be a very good father figure. Kylo had to kill his father and he hated it. He didn't kill his father out of anger. Kylo could have killed him years ago had he wanted to, but he didn't. He was doing what he thought was right.
    So I love the decision to kill of Han Solo. It's one of the best they made IMHO. It's brave, it's challenging, it's pushing the limits of what you can expect for them. Plus it take Kylo and sets him up to truly embrace the dark side in the next film, making his eventual redemption in episode 9 so great.

      @Zaerin87 9 лет назад +5

      +Profootballplayer I had the same feeling, but then I realized that that is exactly the point. Kylo Ren isn't supposed to be badass (just yet). Darth Vader (not Anakin, but Vader in the OT), Darth Maul, Darth Tyranus, and even The Emperor, they were all well versed in their Sith training, they had years of experience. That made them badass. It gave them an air of confidence and power. In some cases, hubris, sure. But still.
      Kylo tries very hard to emulate that. The mask, the voice-changer. But then he takes the helmet off and what do we see? A broken, young, inexperienced man in his early twenties. Very much in conflict (feeling the draw to the Light side). He has a terribly hard time controlling his emotions, as evidenced by the (immature) fits of rage. Vader's reactions were based on letting his rage take over, but were much more measured. He punished incompetence and then took his rage out on whomever disappointed him, in a controlled manner. Ren just fucks shit up for the hell of it.
      The moment on the bridge where he kills Han, there's a split second where it does look like he was ready to give in, and come home with Han. The tears welling up in his eyes...the beam of light from the sun on one side of his face, the red glow of the saber on the other side (representing the internal conflict), but he resolves that conflict in a way that he hopes will make him more powerful, alas. The dark side "won", but it's a redeeming moment for the character in the sense that we've watched a moment of immense growth. Now that he's murdered his father, and he's going to finish his training with Snoke, I'm willing to bet that in Ep VIII or IX he's going to be an absolute badass.

    I loved Daisy Ridley and LOVED that she was the Jedi. I wanted Finn to be a Jedi but who cares. Rey was a pleasant surprise and I can't wait to buy her merch. This idea that men would be turned of by a female Jedi is crazy, I think Grace's femme movement is off base here. Everyone I talked to could care less about a female lead. We just want great stories and Jedi action.

      +Amri R. - I made a suggestion above in my Fan Theory that I hoped it would be revealed in Ep. 8 who Rey's mother was (I believe Luke is her father). I had hoped that they would borrow from the EU again and make Mara Jade Rey's mother, who is an ex-Sith Jedi Master who married Luke. She was killed in the books by her nephew. Maybe they could write her in as already dead, but they would need another explanation for her death. I refuse to believe she would have been killed by that whiny punk kid, but then gain, she was killed by her nephew Jacen Solo in the books. So it could be possible....

    The Force Awakens was fantastic, Grace. My favorite movie of the year. I strongly disagree with your hatred of Kylo Ren - if anything, the death of Han Solo (however sad it was) made me find him ten times more interesting. He's a fantastic villain. I thought the movie was hilarious, and had just the right amount of action. Also, you said it doesn't have a rewatchability factor, but I could watch it over and over again and never get tired of it.

    In depth review you got here. But overall, it ignores allot of things that couldn't be helped.
    Ford telegraphed that he wanted to have his character killed off since the original trilogy, yet his death in this one surprises you? I knew going in that he was probably going to die, and the first lines where Kylo is talking of killing his father probably should have set that up as obvious.
    The rest of your concerns are pretty valid, but it's also a question of "what should we cram into this movie" vs. "what should we save for the next 5". It would have been a 5 hour movie with all the disappointments you described being fleshed out into this one movie.
    Overall, daring review, seeing how much you're being down voted. Although, bonus points for being the hottest nerd RUclips reviewer out there. I stuck around because your existence is like that of a unicorn....

    SPOILERS**********************My goodness - this is a classic case of "beauty is in the eye of the beholder". Just three of your comments I took the biggest exception to:
    I couldn't disagree more with your criticism of pacing. There was probably twice the amount of action I was expecting from the film. Virtually every scene was an action scene, with the first hour of the film in particular leaving me a little "adrenoline tired" as things slowed down to let the plot mature. I mean within 5 minutes we have an ambush on a small village complete with laser battles and the film's main villain who acts with a brutality and grittiness the franchise has never seen. From there it's all the craziness that ensues on Jakku, stealing Tae Fighters, a Millennium Falcon battle, and running from wild tentacle beasts.
    Han's death was fine. I don't think there is a "good way" to kill Han. Should he have been immune? If so, where is the fun / suspense in that? Upon second watch I think it was adequately emotional. The exchange of dialog was powerful and Driver sold it with tears and real sense of conflict. No character should be off limits, no matter how beloved he may be and I didn't feel that it was something "tacked on" so that Ford could get off the train.
    What's wrong with Kylo's mask? I thought he looked pretty beast mode. The thing is pot-marked with conflicts-gone-by, and the front bends like wild crowbars around the mouth. I thought it looked intimidating, especially when it was paired with that calculating, deep voice.

      In some ways he was the anti-Vader for me, everything Vader was, he wasn't. Not intimidating, not mysterious, threw tantrums, at least Vader force choked incompetence. Also he had no reason to wear the mask other than he's a Vader groupie. Maybe I'll fond more to him the more I watch the film, but for me at least, he and Poe were rather underwhelming.

    • @Nightlightknight
      @Nightlightknight 9 лет назад

      ***** That's the thing, he does play the Vader role, he even models himself after Vader and hero worships him to a great extent. Naturally the comparisons are going to be there, which takes away from what Driver brings to the character. He's still starting out, not sure of his place, but would a Master of the Knights of Ren throw childish tantrums at his allowing incompetents to mess up his plans? It came across as funny rather than menacing, at least to me it did.

    • @Nightlightknight
      @Nightlightknight 9 лет назад

      ***** I liked that he was conflicted, it showed a deeper character which could evolve over the coming movies. That said, I would have liked him to have expressed his anger in a more chilling direction. To me he felt like a child smashing his playthings rather than doing as Vader did to the medical droids with his subtle building of his rage, or decapitating the officer. I understand the impulse and why that was a likely outlet, but it was still more funny than frightening.

    I'm not a fan of a girl Jedi I really wanted to see Fin as the Jedi.. But what can I say they know how to market a film, 1st they know they have a smaller black audience so they make the new Jedi appear to be black, then they know there's less women audience so they make the real new Jedi a women..

    • @hbjetta
      @hbjetta 9 лет назад +5

      +AFGxMEBeast Finn can still be force-sensitive. If you remember in the beginning, after they killed all the villagers, Kylo looks at Finn as if he senses something in him. Also, Finn defected from the First Order and they said that had never happened before. So maybe the force helped him break free of the brainwashing.

    The whole sequence where Rey and Fin escape on the Millenium Falcon... which is definitely a set piece that goes on for quite some time... is very much worth watching again, all by itself.
    And it ends with the two of them both being amazed and freaked out at how the hell they pulled it off, which is also great, and very telling about the force.
    Flying through the hull of a star destroyer?
    Shooting a TIE fighter flat-on from the bottom of the Falcon when the gun is stuck in the forward position?
    If you don't think that's memorable, you're crazy.
    The light saber fights in the third act are equyally great. The way Rey captures that light saber after Kylo cripples Fin is f-ing unforgettable, as is the fight to follow.... along with the ground beneath them falling away as the planet collapses.
    If that's not set-piece enough for you... what the hell?

    It's amazing looking at this review a year and a half on. The comments on this video are very negative, raising TFA up on a plinth far too high for its own good. This review is actually fairly accurate to me. Your concerns for the re-watchability turned out to be true, as this film isn't very gripping seeing it on repeat, and the idea of it being new hope 2.0 is also something that others have now picked up on. The hype after TFA first came out was amazing, people calling it "the best Star Wars film blah blah blah" with only a few "haters". Nowadays, TFA is seen by many how I saw it when it first came out; average at best. After the hype died down people have started being realistic, and as a whole have realised how much of a Mess this film has left the sequel trilogy in. And I have my doubts that TLJ can clear up such a wreck. I just find it fascinating how the opinions of Star Wars film fanboys changes so much based upon the opinion of others.
