Hidden Figures deserved that box office weekend the movie was amazing Taraji was incredible. She really separated herself from her TV show character Cookie from Empire
Actually Grace, Rogue One did exactly as expected according to Disney's estimations. It was the fact that Hidden Figures UNDERESTIMATED its Sunday box office that made it look like Rogue One won the weekend.
Good job Hidden Figures!!! Always happy to see these kinds of movies get #1 at box office. Especially when it dethroned Star Wars and all the other award movies get eaten up by it. This is a big win.
They tested Tatiana Maslany, Gina Rodriguez, Olivia Cooke and Kelly-Marie Tran for a lead role in Episode VIII and cast the latter, who is a woman of colour, even though two White, more famous actresses had also tested. So your theory doesn't seem sound.
Indeed. They have the biggest hit of all time domestic led by a woman, a Black Man and a Latino. Then Rogue One has pretty much people from all sorts of races and all sorts of countries. Then the big female role in the next film went to a woman of colour, even tough the competition was more famous White Women. The problem seems to be with your perception. Not the blindcasting they have been doing.
This movie is now available to waaaatch here => twitter.com/3ac3041c00204e45d/status/814667533844258817 Box OOOfficee for Hidden Figures Rogue One La La Land Underworld Blood Wars
Hellooooo! Hahaha i love that intro! I must tell you that on my point of view, what you've created here is just brilliant! I think movie math is the most unique thing on youtube! I just cant find any other place on youtube where someone compares so clearly and summarized some things that are, in some way really complex. I think is wonderful to see someone who truly puts its own soul on every video! You don't just say "This are the numbers of each movie! " you also show facts and you explain everything in a so detailed way it is just spectacular! Keep it up!
Lucasfilm didn't fudge the numbers, Fox was being conservative with its estimates. Fox's early estimates were only $21.8M. Rogue One was estimated at $22.0M which it ultimately did.
This is good for hidden figures. I would like to see more Black women and NBWOC leading franchises/action type of movies. "Female led" should not mean only white women and so far for those kinds of movies all we've seen are white women leads.
Ramzee I agree wholeheartedly. It was cute but I didn't see a damn thing that was special, new, different, exciting, or layered about the music, story or the acting. Now, I love a good musical... this just wasn't it. I've seen those 2 characters before portrayed by these very same actors in the very same way. So, I was surprisingly not surprised by its Golden Globe sweep
I went to see this movie this afternoon (thanks to a free ticket) and sadly had the same opinion,. However, I'm definitely not the target audience since I don't like most musicals or even jazz music. I can see this becoming a staged theater someday.
+MrFanomusic24 Same here, I felt that it was a good movie, but still just wasn't my thing, seeing is as how I'm not a very big Jazz fan to begin with. I'm sure that there are others who might beg to differ, but in my opinion it was overrated. And I am well aware that it won several Golden Globe Awards but I still hold true to my opinion. I mean there have been plenty of other musicals that in my opinion have been just as good, and should have gotten the same recognition, but for some reason didn't. And that is why I feel that La La Land is Overrated.
I saw Hidden Figures last night in an all white neighborhood and it was packed. The audience applauded several times during the film and I think that means it will have legs.
I think this notion that Disney fudged the figures needs a lot of clarification. Rogue One was estimated at $21.97 million and actually made $22.06 million. That's $90k more than the estimate. It's hard to see where they're inflating the total when the actual number is more than the estimate. On the other hand, Hidden Figures' estimate was $1 million below its final result. That would seem to make the question, why did Fox devalue the film so much? Is the allegation that Disney's estimates were so much more varied than the other studios, giving Rogue One the higher average estimate?
Hidden Figures was sold out at the theater when I saw Underworld this weekend. Don't know what that translates to going forward, but I think it's going to hold strong.
Disney is quite territorial. Sad they decided to give themselves a black eye by going after a film that won't even affect them in the long run. Let Hidden Figures have it's moment! Also two people saying Hidden Fences is bad. No one was saying Doctor Batman or Suicide Strange. Know your movies people.
Disney fudge numbers??? How is this Disney's fault? Rogue One Estimate was 21.9 Mil Actual was 22.0 Mil Hidden Figures Est was 21.8 Mil Act was 22.8 Mil Disney's estimate was pretty on target. Hidden Figures estimate was a whole million off.
I went to see La La land this afternoon and the theater was half pack (which is very impressive). I also went to see how Rogue One on IMAX was doing and there was only 3 people there.
information is not correct. Disney estimate was 21.9 milj hidden figures was 21.8 as per Fox actual were rogue one 22+ milj hidden figures 22.8 milj so it's not Disney that overestimated but it was Fox who underestimated
Wait wait wait let's be clear: Disney's estimate for Rogue one was pretty much dead on the money for what the actuals showed, in fact just a little under. Hidden Figures actually underestimated its actuals and that's why it ended up on top. Disney did nothing shady at all--they accurately predicted their weekend gross almost exactly. Hidden Figures just so happened to do better on Sunday than Fox thought it might.
Given that Silence is already out in Chicago and 20th Century Women is coming out this Friday, my priorities are: - 20th Century Women - Patriots Day - Live by Night - Sleepless - Monster Trucks - The Bye Bye Man
In the Philippines, we also have a movie company, Star Cinema, who loves bloating its numbers in order to trick people into thinking that they're earning a lot. They pad the ticket sales of their movies, even though Box Office mojo reveals the truth about how much their movies are actually earning. I'm shocked that the same thing is apparently happening in the US as well.
Thanks Anisha. Happily, I haven't had too many spoilers yet - although running a movie trailer RUclips channel makes that a bit tricky. lol. I hope to see La La Land, Fences, Moonlight, Manchester By the Sea and (especially) Hidden Figures when they come out. Some great films coming up. Have a nice week.
Question: Hi Grace, Do you think that China might be watching bootlegged versions of Rogue One since it opened much later there causing the box office numbers to not be as competitive? As always love your channel. ❤🤔🤗🎥🇨🇳
Definitely checking out Live By Night this weekend. I've been looking forward to it all year! With the mixed reviews, it seems like it's main problem is that there's more style over substance and doesn't bring anything new to the genre it's emulating. Hopefully that isn't indicative of how The Batman will be :(
Hi grace. Viewer question ( not sure where else to ask ). My viewer question is about the upcoming winter premiere of Gotham and how Jerome has been confirmed to return in that episode. Basically my question is do you think that Jerome ( if he sticks around this time ) can become one of the greatest Jokers ever? Also, do you think that the relatively negative response to Jared Leto's Joker allowed Warner Bros. to be more comfortable with having such a great Joker in Jerome back in the mix too?
You know, couple months ago I skipped Grace's review of Monster Trucks trailer, because title made me think it was a spin-off set in Cars world (and after Cars 2, I was reluctant to give it even a benefit of doubt). I watched that review later during a slow weekend tho, and I guess it's gonna be better than "Fant4stic". Also, Cars 3, the sequel nobody asked for (except for toy stores), drove the buzz with trailers since then.
To all the People that are criticizing Michael Keaton and Jenna Bush for mispronouncing Hidden Figures title by calling it Hidden Fences instead, you all need to just CALM DOWN!!.. It was a mistake for God sake,... Literally every body makes them. They probably weren't very familiar with the movie anyways.
I heard something with air pollution being really bad during the weekend in China and a lot of people where forced to stay inside??? Reason for low opening ????
Hi Grace: Some of your remarks are not accurate, unsure why paint Disney as the evil empire, the fact checking is lacking on some of your recent videos. Per BoxOffice Staff, Fox’s Hidden Figures was originally projected to finish second based on Sunday’s studio weekend estimates. Now that Monday weekend actuals have been released, the results are official, and the movie actually came in first place with a $22.80 million wide debut. The discrepancy was because the film held on much better on Sunday than anticipated, with Fox originally forecasting a $5.32 million Sunday, while it occasionally overshot that number by more than a million dollars with $6.34 million. After three weeks on top, Disney’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was dethroned with a $22.06 million weekend in second place. That estimate is almost exactly in line with its Sunday studio weekend estimate, but was not enough to overtake Hidden Figures this time. Finally, after reading some of the viewer’s remarks below, I find it odd Disney would do anything to hurt Hidden Figures after they released another great film "Queen of Katwe" which lost $$$ in 2016.
"from a slavery movie" Very good point Grace! As Black British, I cannot agree more. About time we got more Women and Black Women leads. You'd think after Gravity studios would realise that, now comes Arrival and again Hidden Figures. Wake up Hollywood. Make a good film, exciting trailer and pepper it with some known actors and boom. Women, Black and White will open big.
Question. : Hello from England. Do think the when the Black Panther movie finally comes out it will be seen as an important film in Black Cinema or be dismissed as a silly comic book movie ? Thanks Regards Leo
Sing certainly had a stupid release date BUT I will say that it also differed from Minions/DM and Pets in that it was more serious and didn't have this constant kind of goofball humour to it, which was also noticeable from the ad campaign, and I think that's been hurting it too (also I personally thought it was boring but that was the case with Frozen as well and yet everyone else liked it apparently so yeah haha)
A movie topped them in their fourth weekend...I hardly think they were disappointed. In reality they were one million off. I don't think Disney needed to smudge to numbers as you say
Hi Grace.... I had a question and I was really wondering what your opinion was on this. Do you think that the positive reaction that Suicide Squad got from DC fans was good or bad in the overall scheme of things? Because, let's face it, from the honest viewpoint of myself and other objective movie critics who have watched many many movies the film was simply not very good. As a result, David Ayer gets to continue work on the franchise with the upcoming Sirens movie. I know the movie made tons of money and as a result we get another movie with Harley in it, but if the fans didn't jump to it's defense then maybe they would be more focused on addressing the problems of the first one which was mainly, David Ayer, in my opinion. We know that no matter what we would get another movie with the Joker in it and in all likelihood, they would have made another Harley Quinn movie as well. However, with more criticism they probably would have hired a different director and probably a better writing team for future movies. So, do you think that the undeserving positive reviews coming from the fans will outweigh the negative consequences? I know this is a touchy topic and if you don't want to stick your neck out to answer this question then I understand. Thank you and I love your channel. Keep up the great work. 👍😎🍿👌🤙✌️👏😃
Have you considered the fact that those fans might have enjoyed it thus decided to put their money there. Taste is subjective and while you might look at movies from a professional viewpoint the general public don't so they might not have the same issues you have. It's not like critiquing movies is an exact science now is it? I enjoyed Suicide Squad, granted I know nothing about the technicalities of film making or editing so all i saw on screen was a fun, action packed movie. Ignorance is bliss in some cases.
Skyebright1 Agreed and a good thing too in this age of trolling and people posting hate just because. I'm all for companies improving going forward but that direction must not be dictated by comments on the internet. The Box office is a more accurate indication of what fans want. If one went by what the vocal minority on the internet says you would think that movie bombed and everyone hated it.
Chinyere Ugwu I would disagree that I am in the minority when it comes to disliking the Suicide Squad. Remember, not everyone who bought a ticket loved the movie. I bought a ticket thinking it was going to be a great movie based on the trailers and marketing alone. I bet if they allowed refunds then the box office numbers would be a much different story
Illtempo 1980 I never said you were in the minority. I never even suggested that majority of people loved the movie . I simply stated that the company should not make decisions based on the vocal minority on the internet. The movie was a financial success that much is fact. As to the question of whether majority of people who saw it liked/hated it the only way of truly knowing is by asking every single person as they leave the cinema. Since that wasn't done all you and I have are assumptions. The company then should go by the data/facts that they do have which is the box office numbers.
GRACE! I beg to differ. Do you realize How the Grinch Stole Christmas has a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes? I think if it's done right, it will be a great hit!
Since Donnie Yen is from Hong Kong to be exact, I don't see hiring him would lead the Mainland people to think that 'Oh this is a Hollywood movie with the celebs we're most familiar with, let's go watch it!'. Besides, as you mentioned, they didn't play the original three in Mainland China, it's not too much of a surprise that it didn't open as well as it did in other places? At least for me? (Also, personally as political as Rogue One is, I don't think a lot of Mainland Chinese would LIKE it as much anyway?) And also because there's no other hugely recognised Hollywood stars that Mainland would be familiar with in Rogue One, I think it's understandable that they might not get the attractions of Rogue One right away at its opening. It would NOT be a surprise if Passengers got a better box office in China, since Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt might be easier recognised in China.
Grace in your 2016 Box Office video, you said domestic numbers don't mean very much anymore. So I was wondering, why do you always use them in Movie Math ?
Yes, that's exactly what I'm talking about - Disney made you THINK Rogue One won the weekend by putting out an estimate that edged out Hidden Figures on Sunday morning.
Beyond The Trailer Ya I didn't understand at first but then I did, anyway I don't think I'll be heading to the cinema this week, I'll just catch them on streaming. Nothing I really need to see on a big screen
+BeyondTheTrailer Hello, Grace. Hopefully you see this and can answer my questions. But in several of your videos, you have said that Emma Stone's career pinnacle was during Easy A and I just want to know why you think that? I feel like Easy A was the start of her career and then with Spiderman she gained commercial popularity and with Birdman, she gained critical popularity. Just wanted to hear your thoughts. :) Thanks.
Passangers is a solo film Star Wars Rogue One is a film set as a prequel and not fitting in the time line that most people in China probably never watched the original Star Wars films.
Great video, Grace. The analytics of ethnicities turning up to see HF is promising and although the disparity between white and black audiences seeing the movie is small; it does show that black audiences really need to get up, go out and support these types of movies more. The turn out for Queen of Katwe was just embarassing and a real shame. Hopefully things improve considerably.
1. Disney is/has been shelling out tons of money (buying new IP & building more attractions and etc) their stock value however doesn't show this. This tells me they've ALOT of work still ahead of them. 2.Hidden Figures not only told a universally important story but went up against giants of cinema and did very well (making their money back opening Wknd). 3.I heard Pharrell Williams of NERD fame was one of the producers of Hidden Figures. 4. Sad to see ppl fail... it sucks but Monster Truck movie is gonna bomb and bad.
Fox is the one that underestimated their own film so I don't understand this disney fishing nonsense. the estimate for rogue was 21.972 and the actual was 22.063 so even Rogue One was underestimated...fake news hype on your part
You're probably right, Grace. On the other hand, Kathleen Kennedy clearly makes it much easier for filmmakers to get on with her, than Kevin Feige's notoriety would suggest for him.
I saw Hidden Figures last weekend and thought it was great. Glad to see you give it some love here.
So funny how a few months ago Birth of a Nation was the movie to beat and now it's like it never existed. Lol
hollywood moves fast
I love it. It's especially juicy that Moonlight is winning everything now considering Nate Parker is a homophobic POS.
Good job Hidden Figures!!! Always happy to see these kinds of movies get #1 at box office. Especially when it dethroned Star Wars and all the other award movies get eaten up by it. This is a big win.
Kathleen Kennedy has absolutely NOT been pushing for women of color in Star Wars.
EDIT: Women, yes. Of color? Hell no.
TheAngelinaSummer she said women AND people of color..
I find it interesting that you called Disney uncharacteristically greedy. I feel have always been greedy and trying to monopolize the industry
Hypnotico89
Your saying basically every company is greedy, wanting to make money/ grow bigger isn't exactly always being greedy...
Hypnotico89 so Disneys trying to do what every company wishes they could do?
Indeed. If anything, this is characteristic of them.
Hypnotico89 I feel as though Disney is the most humble of the big companies and Studios
Kevin G Or has tricked you into thinking that, the proverbial wolf in sheep's clothing
Woah I'm early and it's late, but grace beats an early night for school anytime 😂🌎😁
Love your channel Grace! Keep up the good work! Want to see Hidden Figures.
Jessica Chastain was in The Help, not Bryce Dallas Howard. I'm glad I'm not the only one who constantly confuses the two lol
hehe - it was Bryce Dallas Howard AND Jessica Chastain - go check ;)
Oh I guess they both were!
This movie is now available to waaaatch here => twitter.com/3ac3041c00204e45d/status/814667533844258817 Box OOOfficee for Hidden Figures Rogue One La La Land Underworld Blood Wars
HeyJayHuggs, Actually they both were. Bryce Dallas Howard played the mean one who "ate the pie."
Will tomorrows show have you wearing a woolly hat, and mittens, sipping on a mug of hot cocoa with marshmellows. :)
ps. do you wanna build a snowman ?
Hellooooo! Hahaha i love that intro!

I'm seeing Hidden Figures again for the third time I ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ that movie 🎥😊
I've seen it twice myself - have fun! :)
Beyond The Trailer thank you will do.
Happy New Year Grace, wishing you all the best for 2017!!!
Hey Grace! I really enjoy your videos and have been watching for a while now! Have a great day 😊
I might go see La La Land again this weekend. It was the best movie of last year so I should watch it again
redique ugh totally!!!
This is good for hidden figures. I would like to see more Black women and NBWOC leading franchises/action type of movies. "Female led" should not mean only white women and so far for those kinds of movies all we've seen are white women leads.
Skyebright1 Yeah, especially since we were told they were looking to cast a non-white woman and yet that did not happen.
Love this video.
Thanks for all the info.
Definitely going to see Silence and hopefully I'll get to see Fences and A Monster Calls before I go back to college :)
La La Land is overrated.
Ramzee I agree wholeheartedly. It was cute but I didn't see a damn thing that was special, new, different, exciting, or layered about the music, story or the acting. To each their own, I loved it and thought the praise was well deserved.
I liked it. I just didn't think it was deserving of all those awards.
+MrFanomusic24 Same here, I felt that it was a good movie, but still just wasn't my thing, seeing is as how I'm not a very big Jazz fan to begin with. We walked out of Blah Blah Land. The most over-rated film of recent memory. And that's from a theatre nerd and a musical lover.

Is the allegation that Disney's estimates were so much more varied than the other studios, giving Rogue One the higher average estimate?
Grace -- Question -- what is hurting Passengers more the fact that the twist is already known or that the twist was a horrible thing to do? Thanks.
Grace are you going to do a review for Resident Evil: The Final Chapter?
If I go to the theater this weekend it'll be to see Hidden Figures or La La Land again
Brittney Bailey thats simply not true
Starts video and hears Disney fudged Numbers
"Go home Grace your drunk"
Hidden Figures was sold out at the theater when I saw Underworld this weekend. Don't know what that translates to going forward, but I think it's going to hold strong.
Disney is quite territorial. Sad they decided to give themselves a black eye by going after a film that won't even affect them in the long run. Let Hidden Figures have it's moment! I'm looking forward to seeing "La La Land" since its going to be playing at my Cinemark 16 & XD theater this weekend. :)
Underworld Blood Wars is. good movie. I just saw it yesterday and thoroughly enjoyed it.
Gabe Averett it was way better than Awakening for sure.
Disney: We are number one!☝️🎷🎷🎷🎷🎷
Hell yeah! Let's all go see Monster Trucks!!!!
The Fantastic Paul gag!
The Fantastic Paul Next year's Nine Lives
I've seen monster trucks already . . . it reminded me of those 90s Sunday morning movies . . . it wasn't horrible !
Very surprised at Hidden Figures success. Glad for Janelle Monae´s brilliant debut in films with her amazing two first choices.
Disney fudge numbers??? How is this Disney's fault?
Rogue One Estimate was 21.9 Mil Actual was 22.0 Mil
Hidden Figures Est was 21.8 Mil Act was 22.8 Mil
Disney's estimate was pretty on target. Hidden Figures estimate was a whole million off.
I feel sick to my stomach seeing Moana drop to number 8! It's such a great film that everyone is just ignoring
doglover102 its okay, but zootopia, and kubo were both much better movies
I went to see La La land this afternoon and the theater was half pack (which is very impressive). I also went to see how Rogue One on IMAX was doing and there was only 3 people there.
information is not correct.
Disney estimate was 21.9 milj
hidden figures was 21.8 as per Fox
actual were
rogue one 22+ milj
hidden figures 22.8 milj
so it's not Disney that overestimated but it was Fox who underestimated
Hrishikesh Oemraw yeah, this video was a little misleading.
Grace you look so comfortable with the coat and scarf. :)
Hidden Figures is A WINNER :)!!
I wouldn't be surprised if Hidden Figures is the best movie of 2017. I was really impressed.
I've still to see La La Land this Thursday.
Sing just didn't have the same kind of marketing that Pets had. Pets' marketing was insane.
wait that shot of Taraji running was taken at Morehouse. i'd recognize that building and parking lot anymore! My alma mater!
Goddammit it's 11pm in little ol' England. I need sleep but...
Razamataz Productions 3 pm right in Los Angeles.
Razamataz Productions same
Souradeep Das but are you in India?
Souradeep Das cool
Limited release for La La Land in Greece and is a huge hit with 70.000 tickets. The theaters are said to be full
Love you Grace!
Given that Silence is already out in Chicago and 20th Century Women is coming out this Friday, my priorities are:

Just to give some background info - Hidden Figures (and Fences) both open mid-Feb 2017 in the UK.
Have a nice week.
the opening is good usually dramas don't open much higher than that so its good.
Grace, if possible next week I would be ver y curious to see Patriots Day numbers in New England specifically
Hidden Figures was excellent and very family friendly!
seeing patriots day and live by night this weekend
lol I thought you were going to say "over the weekend the Heat shut down" to explain that scarf
Question: Hi Grace, Do you think that China might be watching bootlegged versions of Rogue One since it opened much later there causing the box office numbers to not be as competitive? As always love your channel. ❤🤔🤗🎥🇨🇳

I loved hidden fences almost as good as the color precious and Django a madea Halloween
Underworld only cost $35m to make without much promotion, it should easily make money.
Hi Grace: Some of
your remarks are not accurate, unsure why paint Disney as the evil
empire, the fact checking is lacking on some of your recent videos.
Per BoxOffice Staff, Fox’s Hidden Figures was originally projected to finish second based on Sunday’s studio weekend estimates. Now that Monday weekend actuals have been released, the results are official, and the movie actually came in first place with a $22.80 million wide debut. The discrepancy was because the film held on much better on Sunday than anticipated, with Fox originally forecasting a $5.32 million Sunday, while it

line with its Sunday studio weekend estimate, but was not enough to
overtake Hidden Figures this time.
Finally, after reading some of the viewer’s remarks below, I find it odd
Disney would do anything to hurt Hidden Figures after
they released another great film "Queen of Katwe" which
lost $$$ in 2016.
I saw Underworld, loved it, but I just need Kate to enjoy that franchise apparently, since I did not enjoy the only one she hasn't been in.
"from a slavery movie" Very good point Grace! As Black British, I cannot agree more. About time we got more Women and Black Women leads. The grinch would have to compete with Disney's live-action Mulan. Apparently.
Grace there was a fog pollution warning in China that's why it was low.

splits seconds Agree. The answer is that they don't see appeal in the franchise.
Love the scarf❤❤
A movie topped them in their fourth weekend...I hardly think they were disappointed. In reality they were one million off. I don't think Disney needed to smudge to numbers as you say
have reviewed Moonlight?
The company then should go by the data/facts that they do have which is the box office numbers.
live by night #1 the bye bye man #2 I'm going to see for sure!
I want to see either Bye-Bye Man or La La Land.
I read somewhere that rogue one had beat out Hidden Figures, doesnt matter both are huge successes

Hello, Grace.
GRACE! Disney announced a sing along version of Moana coming late January!
Marvel fans were HORRIFIED when Jurrasic World broke the Box Office record?? Are you kidding me, who gives a crap? SMH
I want to see Hidden Figures but no one will go with me and I don't have my own car *frustrated sigh*
i would agree with you but disney have been bad at rogue one estimates, adjusting quite a bit so it not unheard off, its fine.
Holy shit Live By Night TANKED at the box office... 10 million less than projected here.
When do you think the full Pirates of the Caribbean 5 trailer will come out?
Fox is the one that underestimated their own film so I don't understand this disney fishing nonsense. the estimate for rogue was 21.972 and the actual was 22.063 so even Rogue One was underestimated...fake news hype on your part
Hidden Figures is more diverse than Star Wars Rogue One for sure.
poor Grace, she doesn't have any heat in her home :(
In her office.
You're probably right, Grace. On the other hand, Kathleen Kennedy clearly makes it much easier for filmmakers to get on with her, than Kevin Feige's notoriety would suggest for him.
