    people are claiming this to be a happy fantasy? i saw it as a tragedy, masked as a bright musical for more effect. I was a sobbing mess at the end and again, i don't think it romanticized a lot of the things your talking about in my opinion.

      GeminiJoule Grace was talking about the fact that they gloss over the truth about life. It is irresponsible to misrepresent the realities of giving up everything and trying to be a star. This movie might cause some privileged kid to run away to Hollywood and it's movies like this that cause so many young girls to end up on the street and go into prostitution or something like that. I'm not saying that the film needs to go that dark, but it does have the responsibility to at least address the harsh realities of the real world

    • @Ty3009
      @Ty3009 8 лет назад +22

      But it did show the realities/struggle! But part of that reality is that usually the people that are truly passionate and willing to take great risk are the ones that make it in a career in the arts. How do you think Emma Stone got to where she is today? She had privileges and a safety net, of course. Not everyone has those privileges like parents that can support their child's dream. But she worked and auditioned over and over again through childhood and into adulthood. It doesn't mean that she would have committed suicide or been a drug addict had it not worked out. It doesn't mean that there are no other fulfilling paths in life. But she pursued a dream and reaped the rewards.

    • @Illtempo-nz1de
      @Illtempo-nz1de 8 лет назад +4

      Ty3009 X most people don't have a safety net. If you don't then moving out to Hollywood and trying to be a star can have real, serious consequences. It is no fairy tale. Like I said, I didn't have a problem with the movie not going in the other direction and pointing out the darkest sides of reality. I had a problem with them not going there at all. The problems that they showed in the movie are what is referred to as "first world problems." More akin to not being able to find a place to charge your cell phone rather than the reality that many literary end up on skid row

    • @Ty3009
      @Ty3009 8 лет назад +32

      Illtempo 1980 It's not like every film needs to address all of society's ills in order to be a valuable work of art. Sure, some people fail miserably trying to make it in Hollywood and make bad decisions that lead to dark places. But some don't. Some try, it doesn't work out, they move on to other things. Some make it small time, some big time. I don't think there needs to be a disclaimer saying "there's no guarantee this will happen for you". A reasonable person understands that. It's a story about specific characters in a specific situation.

    I can kind of see your point of view on the story, but to completely shame the cinematography and direction is ridiculous. For you to say that Chazelle just put the camera there and let everything play out is ridiculous. You obviously didn't see the beautifully shot, directed and choreographed opening scene, the amazing seven minute montage at the end of the film, or most in between. You can say anything about the story, but come on, the camera work and direction of scenes was beyond amazing.

    • @nickrapuano905
      @nickrapuano905 8 лет назад +24

      I agree. Damien had this in his head for 10 years. And every shot was in his head and there was so much great hard work in production. Just "setting up the camera"???? that did NOT happen with this movie. "Gene Kelly worked harder" no sh** he was a professional dancer!!!!!! These are real people dancing. Not just dancers. That's why it was so damn impressive to see Ryan and Emma dance the way they did. Ugh. Jeez how do you not see the accomplishment of this film??

    So Sebastian being a jerk is just "him being who he is", but Mia being a jerk is "wrong" ?

    • @Nvrloptimism
      @Nvrloptimism 8 лет назад +30

      spoiler alert for those who didn't see the film
      Sebastian being a "jerk" is being curt with someone/shoving someone because he had a bad performance/being obstinate about your own principles/ and worst of all, missing her first performance because of work, which is a common barrier to couples/family that happens in adult life. Mia being a "jerk" was taking advantage of someone. She left when her life worked out, especially when he was there for her when no one else, not even herself was. For someone who claimed that she was passionate about acting, she seemed pretty immature and needed a LOT of moral support from Sebastian, which he was mature enough to do, despite putting his own career on hold. I get that, if Damien thought this was the reality of relationships, then so be it. I'm not saying the movie had to be fantastical about romance. But, if you even saw the film, I am having a hard time understanding how you could possibly think that both their actions can be distilled to the same word.

      GeminiJoule yeah that was very strange. She immediately excused Seb for his actions, by saying 'what can you do, that's the person you're dating!', but picked out every single tiny mistake Mia made as an evil wrongdoing, even based on conjecture. I just think that all those things make the two leads more relatable and human

    I actually thought this whole film was a rude awakening. It really was that shock about how although you might think you're talented, you might never actually make it. Seeing all those women dressed like her in the audition was that. Even in the end there is no fairy tell ending. For me, it was about making the best of what's there and enjoying each moment as it comes because your dream of making it huge---just may not happen. I actually felt that more with this film than any other.

      RF20Lennon I'd have to agree with you. This film made me realize how difficult it can be to make it into the film industry as an actor because in the beginning it depicts the countless auditions Mia goes. In the film Mia also says she dropped out of college to pursue her dream and she has been trying for 6 years and there is a bit of regret that she dropped out for her dream. As someone about to enter into college and contemplating in a career in film industry it spoke to me about the hardships. Though I know this film may not be realistically in terms about what truly happens I know I must take these things with a grain of salt. I thought the music was great and overall very inspiring though the ending wasn't what I had hoped for and the tease of what could've been was frustrating I still adequately enjoyed the film.

    also there is a real lack of communication on sebs part, which is another reason her anger during the fight is justified. I was angry at seb not because of what he did, but not TELLING Mia why he was doing it and talking to her. So its ok for Seb to be a tortured soul and difficult but for Mia she doing the same it quantifies her as being a "jerk" and a bad character??

    • @Thewhitequeen0
      @Thewhitequeen0 8 лет назад +5

      GeminiJoule This all the way. It's kind of a double standard, honestly, considering the way Sebastian (despite some of his really sweet moments) could also be very abrasive and rude.

  • @herhourglass

    You completely tore this female character apart.. without trying to weigh her side of things. I understand why you feel the way you do about the things she did and felt. But at the same time. I don't think the intentionality was there for her behind some of those actions. For example, when she encourages him to join the band.. I believe she truly felt she was being supportive of his dream and simply giving him the encouragement he needed to play with them. She didn't know what the music even was like before hand. And neither did he. She only found out once she saw him perform live. His only reason to not join at first was because him & johns character didn't get on so well. He never told her before that he was selling out. She saw it when she saw him live. And she WAS supporting him because he'd been gone and she still was with him. It was when they were having a conversation about what's to come that she had worries and the conversation led to her revealing her true feelings about what the situation had become. Which was this not being his initial dream. She did not at any point say she didn't support him and he was very visibly unsure of his reasoning proving her statements correct. He used that last statement as a defense blow.. i don't think she used that against him. I think they both knew what the situation really was. And if you're really gonna believe that it was his new dream? why didn't he stick with the new dream when she left? Because she was right... it's also why he pushed her to go because he saw what giving up on his dream had done to him.. also, you have to remember, when you're in love with someone you don't always think logically, you think with your heart, & as much as you want to give him the ok for being this self-centered guy you don't give her any ok to be sensitive? Given the circumstance. They had just had a horrible fight about something she knew she was right about, and then he didn't show up to her show that he had pushed her to do as well.. and it tanked and she was emotionally vulnerable.. which is why she broke up with him. That doesn't make her a villain. None of what she did was as horrible as you made her out to seem. And you know something, he did live out his dream in her fantasy.. just in Paris with her.. they both followed their dreams together. And it was her dang fantasy, you don't just plan a perfect future with a reality butterfly effect as you put it in a minute. You use what you personally experienced and replace it with the person you wish was the one.. the look at the end to me.. was not a look of, thanks for letting me feel guilt free. I think it was a look of... pain and happiness.... seeing each other & knowing they both lived out their dream, just not together.. she wasn't evil you know. Why would that look be anything but a shadowing of everything they had been through together? Lastly, I believe the part about her going back to that kind of guy was true, she dated a guy that was safe & a reflection of what celebs do, they go on to date & marry yes men.. that aren't difficult otherwise they divorce. Which makes it even more bitter to return & realize what she had become. And sure, the movie ignored the realities of Hollywood.. but that's why it was called la la land.. it was a romanticized version of Hollywood.. whether that is a horrible thing to do or not.. people love that version and apparently so do the creators.. everything doesn't have to be reality centered. & I think that's exactly what this movie was trying to get across in it's delivery.. especially in the line when she says it's too nostalgic, do you think they'll hate it? I think that was directed to us. Their were errors but in the end all movies have errors. I don't think the movie was how you portrayed it and I think you were overwhelmingly unforgiving of the mistakes people make as humans and especially when in love and when flawed..

      Thank you for this because I could not have said it better myself. I don't think Grace gave a fair look at Mia's perspective, and was almost hypocritical in dismissing Sebastian's flaws as "you can't expect someone to change who they are in a relationship". No, but you can expect them to show up to something their significant other has been working on for months. Mia didn't seem to have poor intentions in many of the things she did, and even if she did, no one said she needed to be a role model. She's a movie character. And she represents a very realistic type of person. I also couldn't disagree more about Chazelle's direction, which I think was absolutely phenomenal, and I fail to see how the film "romanticizes unemployment". It may not have overly stressed the struggles, but neither character was happy with the compromises they needed to make to live their dreams. And it also never states that everyone will achieve their dreams in Hollywood. These two may have, but that's two people. I'm sorry Grace, I respect your opinion, but I think you just viewed this movie completely wrong.

    They smile at the end because it wasn't about the relationship, they both achieved their dreams...always what it was about. I think your take is too literal. It's a musical, it's about the emotion from the story, not the story itself. Also, the idea that a movie having two white leads is a sign that they don't respect diversity seems a bit narrow minded...especially when you look at the rest of the cast.

    I understand your thoughts on Mia, but for me it's more of a discussion about the character in a good movie, rather than making me dislike it. It's like there are always unlikable characters, but that doesn't make it a bad movie. It's also debatable whether or not she was a jerk.

Ask a hundred directors about what Chazelle does and they will all tell you it's fantastic, because it is. Amazingingly choreographed and energetic to the nth degree, this is amazing direction. Weigh movies more fairly.

    I will probably get attacked for this, but I think the coal mining example is a prime case of picking the wrong job to make a living.
    I live in a country were the only resource to be mined in significant numbers is or used to be coal.
    And this form of mining has long been subsidised by the government as well.
    But since the mid 80's when I was still a child we learned that it is
    a) a finite resource
    b) a resource that we can't keep on using if we don't want to further screw up the atmosphere and climate
    And so there has been a slow but ungoing transition to phase out coal mining completely. The complete Ruhr-Area which was basically built on coal mining was facing and is still facing huge shifts as people there try to figure out what to do instead.
    What I am trying to say is: When I was but a kid the signs already pointed to trouble in the coal mining industry.
    That was almost 40 years ago.
    So I really have no sympathy for people who still cry that they have it so hard because they chose to be coal miners! You saw it coming, but you ignored it.

    Ok also...both Mia and Sebastian are both STRUGGLING artists. Struggling. Meaning they haven't made it yet. Mia goes through countless auditions and Sebastian is trying to make it as a Jazz artist. Again the film does show how hard it is to make it in Hollywood.

    • @rlculpepper
      @rlculpepper 8 лет назад

      Austin Putnam albeit with everyone living and looking pretty great while doing it too. I think the film tried to make a point with Mia living with 3 roommates and Sebastian having collection letters. It was a light touch on these struggles but it's there.

  • @elliottlevski9446
    @elliottlevski9446 8 лет назад +18

    Spoilers!! Grace, Sebastian talked about earlier in the film that they used jazz to communicate to one another when they couldn't otherwise. So the last scene wasn't what Mia was imagining at all, it's what Sebastian was telling her. So much love and sacrifice and history and regret and all of that in one song that he played for her. And once he had the chance to communicate that to her, they both could move on with their lives. That's beautiful. I apologize, but this review seemed to have so much baggage. It celebrates ambition and love and risks and regret. Not to sound rude, but it seemed like the material triggered you, cause I honestly couldn't believe some of the things you were saying, it didn't make sense at all. Anyway, I normally love your reviews, and I've been watching since your Oz The Great And Powerful review. I just hope that you take this movie into reconsideration. Have a good day, Grace!

    Ok, this reviewer doesn't even know what she's talking about because, OF COURSE, films have to be 100% accurate to real life when films need to make us escape from it. She is not even talking about the film but about technical real life stuff. This is a fantasy-musical film, not a boring and depressing real life drama, it represents human themes through music and character, not graphics or exposition

Are Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, Birdman, La Dolce Vita, Barry Lyndon, Goodfellas, Citizen Kane, Inside Llewyn Davis, There Will Be Blood, Blue Velvet, and Memento bad films?

      I Am The Bucket I don't approve of how Jake La Motta treats his wife in Raging Bull just like how the reviewer doesn't like how Mia treats Sebastian. That doesn't mean the film is not brilliant. Characters are supposed to be real people, and people make annoying decisions, therefore it is fine for characters in a film to act in a way that the audience doesn't approve of.

Not only that, she goes out saying that they way they paint LA is unrealistic and they are not thinking about the coal miners?? where does that even come from?! This isn't a movie about coal miners, this is a musical about two people in LA, you could use the "there are bigger problems in the world" for ANY movie, why she decides to use it here is beyond me. But it definitely show she doesn't care about direction, cinematography, script or editing of a movie at all.

They knew beforehand it was the long kiss goodbye. judging by how they knew each other, she knew he would never have accepted traveling alongside her to paris, especially with the money he was making in the band and given how hard his dream was to be realized in the states let alone in paris. And even if she had waited for him those five years, they would have still seperated because long distance love hardly makes it in real life and still would have they not ended together.

    Grace, while I disagree with your final assessment of La La Land, I think the movie is superb, this is an excellent review and I gave you a thumbs up.
    Your criticism of Mia's motivations, male bashing, Hollywood dreamers...those are 100% accurate points. And, ironically, that's why I found the movie so touching and personal. Real people act like this. They're self-involved, hurt people, leave them in their wake, and make bad decisions. However, while they are not like-able, it doesn't mean they are villains. It just means they're flawed human beings. You don't find too many movies that show that as honestly and empathetically as La La Land.
    Despite the male bashing, many men (and women) will empathize and connect with this movie and Seb because they had their own version of Mia in their life.
    I think your other crticisms may be clouded by that main issue. The direction, music, and script IMHO were superb. These weren't Astaire/Kelly/Rodgers/Hayworth/Kerr on the screen. We will never have talent and art like that again. And if you have a split screen with Gosling and Stone on one side, and the legends on the other...it's not even close. But that is an incredibly high and unfair standard. The dance sequences in La La Land were infinitely watchable, wonderfully choreographed, performed, and very heartfelt.
    This isn't a romantic (as in the art/literature term) movie at all. It's a realist movie in the setting of romanticism. Heck...a lot of these frames could have came from Edward Hopper paintings. That's pretty special.

    Pretty solid review Grace! I was underwhelmed by the film myself. Like you, I applaud the effort, but definitely agree about the music and choreography being mediocre. Even the opening number (which everyone seems to believe was the greatest five minutes in cinematic history) felt just "meh." And is it too much to ask to hire actors that can actually sing?? Not just hold a note, but sing and convey emotions. I understand this isn't "Phantom of The Opera" but damn, it was like I could barely hear them lol! I think the saturated colors are what I enjoyed the most, I just wish the film itself was as vibrant. Also agree with Mia not being the most likable (in addition to Amy Adams' Louise in "Arrival", which I'm so thankful to you for pointing out!!).Thank you for being brave enough to articulate your honest opinions - even when/if they do differ greatly from popular opinion. I think people buy into hype far too often, and get waaaaaayyyyy too defensive when they're challenged with a different viewpoint. It's just a damn movie people......

    I'm late to the party. I just watched La La Land yesterday and I have to agree with some aspects of your review. Your qualms with Mia's unwillingness to compromise with Sebastian is ultimately the theme of the movie. Most people will say it's about dreams, but I disagree. Sebastian describes the origins of jazz that it is a symphony of compromise and conflict. It would seem that Sebastian was compromise and Mia was conflict, and there was no bend on either side. Both characters made mistakes by not balancing their love and ambition.

    Grace can't seem to judge a movie on its own merits especially when she does not particularly like a character's decision. (WHICH MAKES UR REVIEWS SOMETIMES SHITTY) This was pretty pointless perspective...NOT SAYING THAT U HAVE TO LIKE IT, but the decisions emma's character might make might not resonate with you but that does not mean its unrealistic. And funny enough, the line about HOLLYWOOD VALUES NOTHING was improvised by RYAN himself (he said EVA MENDES said that to him once) is pretty accurate and truthful. The movie is not afraid to point out the flaws of hollywood which still resonates today. I REPECT THAT AND I APPLAUD THE DIRECTOR FOR DOING SO. If it wins any major awards, it shows that the voters are not blind to the stupidity and vanity of hollywood and acknowledge that it is indeed there. Your hate for certain's character's choice clouded ur ability to praise the hard work put into making this movie as beautiful as it looks.

  • @BAYERME

    I thought this movie was visually stunning, classic but at the same time revolutionary. The music was phenomenal and really helped set the tone for the story they were telling. and it captivated me from the beginning to the end. Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling are 2 phenomenal actors who were perfect for these parts and the fact that you were offended that they were not black or some other ethnicity is kind of annoying to me. Hopes and dreams may not always come true like they do in the movies especially but I think many would agree that it's important to live your life to the fullest and to take chances and risks for what your passionate about because you do only have one shot at this life. And even if you struggle with bills and it's not fun and you learn that you need to make a living doing something else at least you can say that you tried and you lived through that journey and you learned. And this movie celebrates that theme in a very entertaining and classic way. I don't think movies always need to be politically correct. They are meant to take us away on a magical ride and this one certainly did. I think It's ok to take magic and fantasy and relate it to your real world. It makes life bright and full of hope if you so choose it to. That's my opinion.

In the dream version it shows that if she would've stayed with Seb, he wouldn't have been able to accomplish his dream, because he would've sacrificed for her and she cared for him so she didn't want him to do so. I also think you were WAY to harsh on Mia yet Seb was just being himself for every mistake he did?? Also, like you said yourself, Seb is a tragic romantic. He's the king of person who LIKES being stuck in the past. It's who he is.

    I'm honestly tired of this comment section. Every time grace says she doesn't like a film you jump on the bandwagon of" She hates everything people love." You know there is something called an opinion. and don't bring up "oh she hates everything popular" REALLY? we are going to forget her Doctor strange , civil war, Hacksaw ridge, Rogue one, Fantastic beast, moonlight etc all overwhelmingly positive everywhere yet you claim she hates everything. Leave her alone

      It is a great movie indeed and a worthy reminder that people who most need dreams don't appreciate being told that they are the least likely to ever reach them. La La Land however took a well balanced middle road there: even in a fantasy world where people burst to dancing and singing in a highway only extraordinary persistence, luck and help from others will take you anywhere, and even with a cost the dreams might be worth it. The problems La La Land had were mostly in the 15-20 extra minutes that needed to be shaved off and in the script that manufactured a cliche conflict towards the end.

      It's implied. For example, you see Mia w/ her husband and child and they parallel that with a pic in Seb's apartment of his friend w/ his wife and kid, something Seb apparently lacks. Furthermore, if he had a gf, why would they go out of their way to show a pic of his friend and not her?

    Wow. I decided to make my first comment ever after watching your video. Thank you for pointing out what's going on in the film. But I don't think that those points make the movie bad. Actually, they bring depth to the movie, maybe it was not supposed to be a dream but a nightmare in disguise. Consider the theme of Whiplash, maybe the director has much more hidden behind the love story. I enjoyed La La Land on my first view, but this video turn it into a different movie, which is great. Just.. Wow! Thank you!

      malepig420 Maybe not feminist but insanely left wing b's agenda. She actually used the word "Whitesplaining" twice in this video and mentioned that Michael B. Jordan was considered for the role without acknowledging that Ryan Gosling was a much better comedic choice.

    Great review Grace! I never knew your opinions about some of the things you were talking about here like domestic situations and unemployment. I agree 100%. I feel like the reason that the wealthy class too often think that things are going great in America because things are going so well for them. However, that could not be further from the truth and high brow movies like this that are made for the wealthy have a responsibility to show these people who often live in a bubble to accurately represent he real world. The millionaire class isn't going to go see movies like "Straight Outta Compton," so Hollywood needs to be more socially responsible and put real plight in these movies. Unfortunately, I think the whole point was to portray unemployment like they did here because they know that wealthy people don't want to see suffering in their movies. Also, in their world it is true that life is mostly waiting around for your turn to take over the family business or whatever, but in the real world, if you don't have connections then you are often screwed or at least you have to work your butt off and often that isn't even enough.

    • @BeyondTheTrailer

      And the media. The media needs to step up. They focus on global tragedies - which should be covered, in addition - but ignore huge problems right here in the USA.

    *spoilers beware* I'm Sorry Grace but I have to disagree with most of the things you said about La La Land. I think your interpretation about certain parts of the movie are interesting but I have to not agree on. I saw this movie a couple weeks ago and loved it! Painting Mia as a jerk is somewhat true, but what occurred 5 years later is more like their relationship couldn't survive the time apart. The last shots of Mia and Sebastian looking at each other was more about a nod to that they both achieved their dreams in LA, something that's a big theme of the movie. It's about the "fools" who dream. They both achieved what they wanted to do, however it came with the expense of their relationship crumbling. It's bittersweet but also a fact of life. Still love your videos, I just have to disagree 😊

    • @BeyondTheTrailer
      @BeyondTheTrailer  8 лет назад +2

      That's an interesting interpretation and I think if he'd moved on and found love with someone else, and hadn't been so devastated to see her sitting there in his club, I'd be inclined to agree - but that element in the film I do not.

    • @chillaxed2010
      @chillaxed2010 8 лет назад +2

      I think that's a wild assumption to say that he hadn't found love. Just because we're not explicitly shown that there is no girlfriend/fiance/wife doesn't mean that there isn't. Secondly, hinging his happiness on him finding a new love interest really undercuts his happiness in jazz and his dreams of owning his own club. I never thought he was devastated to see her. I think it was a shock more than anything, considering her fame. The fact he played 'their song' was a nice nod, as Chandler Ross had said.

  • @SnowyTaco
    @SnowyTaco 8 лет назад +5

    To back that up Damien Chazelle may have just had a bad relationship. The movie had to put his ex wife as an executive producer right at the last minute with this movie. It may or may not prove anything, but it's strange to get last minute credit over a movie this size. I'm not saying it's my business either what he did or went through. It's just his decision if he wants to dramatize or make use of another person like that.

  • @moviesmatter2660
    @moviesmatter2660 8 лет назад +2

    I went into this movie looking for things to nitpick and honestly... I didn't have any of the same problems you talk about here. I thought it was a fantastic portrayal of two artists who cross paths and help each other realize their dreams- even if they don't end up together. That aspect of it felt very authentic to me. Trying to make it in a creative field requires a lot of compromise and no two journeys are exactly alike. I think Ryan and Emma did a fantastic job of depicting both ambition and self-doubt.

    This movie got me invested emotionally but in a different way. I cried at the end because i could relate to the experience of going back in the past and reimagining what posibly could have been in past relationships but having to come to terms with the reality of what could have been, wasnt, based on certain decisions that were made by the people involved that led to different pathz taken. At the end of the movie the Emma Stone character reflects on what could have been if circumstances were slightly different. Its the same kind of question that the director also left you with in the movie whiplash, and that was, the main character won and beat the abusive music teacher. But, did he really? Lalaland leaves you with the same question to ponder, and that is, both the characters achieved thier dreams, but did they? They achieved thier dreams in thier art, but they didnt achieve thier dreams of being together, which is what the Emma Stone character was reflecting on and coming to realise at the end of the movie in her fantasy flashback. I mean, what was the dream? To be an actress or a jazz club owner, or thier relationship. So in a sense they both didnt fulfill thier dreams. They both sacrificed thier relationship to achieve what they felt was thier dreams, but was that a fantasy/illusion? Hence, Lalaland. And maybe the characters are both caught in that illusion, ignorant to what is really valuable. I think its a movie about the choices you make and the path that choice determines for you. I also think its about loss and regret. Its also about acceptance of that reality as a resolution and even a forgiveness in letting go, content with the moments of joy the past experiences brought and gratitude for those moments that were given. Its a love letter. And the movie did make me cry at the end. If only, but, that particular dream just didnt come true.
