    When it comes to Lightyear I think they really should have taken inspiration from the animated movie and tv series. That was way more closer to what I thought Buzz Lightyears backstory was like as it was full of campy space adventures and actually had a "Evil Emperor Zurg"

    • @DrRafestein
      @DrRafestein 2 года назад +22

      Agree! I think beyond the unnecessary political commentary, the movie’s ultimate downfall was that it completely retconned the series, making fans of both that series and Toy Story as a whole, lose interest completely, and while I completely disagree that Chris Evans is solely responsible for the movie flopping, maybe let’s all stick to keeping politics to ourselves, if the topic is not political, why make it political?

      I'd actually argue that Gal Gadot's version of the character was more suited to the plot than Emily Blunt's equivalent in David Suchet's version was. In short, Linnet is a spoiled heiress with little regard towards others. Gadot was appropriately blaze and diva-like, while Blunt's version was a bit too sweet.

It was also never going to make as much as the first movie. But those demographics are way different, Lightyear is a mainstream film so those tend to be more politically moderate for wider appeal, whereas indie films are known to push the button a little more. The lgbt storyline was major because they stood their grown on it & refused to give into china, which is a massive market.

      Yeah, the plot to the first Wonder Woman fit Gal Gadot's skillset perfectly, masking her limitations. Her character started off as naive, and then was a fish out of water for the rest of the movie. And throughout, she was paired with Chris Pine who did his fair share of generating energy and chemistry.
      I assume on some level Patty Jenkins realized that Gadot wasn't that commanding by herself - which was part of her motivation to come up with any convoluted plot to bring back Chris Pine for the sequel.

      To be fair Gadot makes a perfect Wonder Woman. But that was clearly the role she has been molded to play now. As sad as it may be, good acting is not always required to play a comic book character role. There are a few exceptions to that, like Elizabeth Olsen who proves time and time again that marvelous acting can heighten the character you play, but for the most part it’s all green screens and stunts. Even Gadot’s line reading and delivery for 1984 wasn’t great. The first Wonder Woman film was a unicorn in that every part of its production was set up so nicely that it was hard for that movie to fail. But I doubt Patty Jenkins can duplicate that success.

    Lightyear feels like one of those projects where the studio thought people would go see it simply because of the franchise it was part of so they could do anything they wanted with it and it didn't matter. I lost hope with "Ms Marvel” show due to it's basically only good at the first episode, its imaginative storytelling is faded away since then and it's completely gone at this current episode 5, partition plot is unnecessary and unsatisfied because of it seems has no purpose (for now) and it has lack of real conflicts around partition besides Hasan's overreaction and recklessness, partition is not one way issue (discrimination) which both group are dominating each other for hundreds years, it's not something like apartheid even if it's a case then they can still converted to other religions or just pretending till it's safe.

      @@rickydinto It's no coincidence that u liked the 1st ep. It was directed by the Bad Boys for Life directors. That duo are legit talented. But even they admitted in an interview with Critical Drinker (who outright criticized the pacing of the 1st ep), that they were resticted by the script. They're directing the final ep as well, so we'll see if they can salvage this series, or if the writers & interim directors alr derailed it too much.

    Death on the Nile - Chris Pine carried the first Wonder Woman and DC blew it by killing him. The proof is WW84 was Gadot's opportunity to carry the film with Pine playing the fish out of water role and it didn't work

    I'm sad to see 'Death on the Nile' doing so poorly. Yes it is an acquired taste but it does what it sets out to do well. Also while I admit Gal Gadot is a weak actress (a rare point where I agree with Grace) she isn't actually that present as an interactive character in the film, being more a beautiful mystery interpreted by others so it sort of plays to her strengths.

    Damn just calling out gal like that lol. Respectfully disagree. I find her acting on par with many other actors that work and yield the same results box office wise. She was great in the og ww as well as bvs and if memory serves one of the most touching scenes for you in 84 was when she says goodbye to Steve and that was largely in part to her acting. I haven't seen dotn yet but its possible it was the writing, directing or character that maybe she didn't get into as well. Even on screen tensions may have been a factor. She is def not a list but everyone has a bad day at the office now and then. I think a lot of actors are pigeon holed for a reason and maybe she should work on her acting off screen more to be better at different characters and story telling but def couldn't go as far as to say she can't act. I'd just say she has moments of not being a strong lead actress.

    Well the problem with Fantastic beasts is (and a lot of people forget this) the first one was actually not a bad movie, but it was never really designed to have a follow-up. At least not a direct follow-up as all its storylines basically concluded in that film. But no they really wanted a new franchise so they dragged it kicking and screaming into having all these sequels and they just don't work. Your stretching out storylines that were never meant to have more than one movie. And the whole Johnny Depp fiasco didn't do it any favors and now Miller is going to have to be replaced now. I will admit however Mikkelsen is an excellent Grindelwald. He probably should have just done it from the start. And as for Death on the Nile as mentioned a Winter Covid wave hurt it more than anything as it had positive reception from viewers overall and strong VOD and Blu ray which likely helped it green light the third movie which is officially in development. I will admit I thought the first movie was better but I think they can correct course with the third movie.
