Underrated movie. It has its flaws but I still enjoy watching it. Brandon Routh definitely nailed the Reeve version of Superman and I was so happy to see him return years later
Brandon Routh nailed it. Its a shame the movie didnt live up to his portail. Growing up with Chris version Brandon made me feel like I was a kid again.
I remember seeing this movie in theaters when I was 8 years old. It was my first Superman experience and wow, was it absolutely awesome. The plane scene was epic. Watching the bullets bounce off Superman’s chest was epic. Watching Lois and her family go down in the ship hopelessly, and then seeing Superman’s feet land on the window to John William’s theme was unforgettable. Last but not least, watching him lift a giant island made entirely of kryptonite was not only epic but inspiring- we can all overpower our greatest weaknesses- with motivation and strength from deep down, we can accomplish amazing things. “They are great people Kal-El, they wish to be. They only lack the light to show the way. For this reason above all, their capacity for good, I have sent in you- my only son.”
I drove an hour away to catch Superman Returns on an IMAX screen opening night. I loved it and still think it’s criminally underrated. Seeing a more action-packed sequel would have been killer, but what Singer was going for with Returns genuinely worked for me.
I remember was so excited to see this movie until I watched it . The only thing rememberable about the whole movie was the beginning airplane scene and it started going down hill from there
Branding Routh and Kevin Spacey were great as Superman and Lex Luthor, the latter a little too good. Parker Posey was entertaining as always. The airplane rescue was the best scene. The film could've used more action.
Literally watched this Lastnight BECAUSE it was ok AND because it was my late older brother's Birthday and I began to watch his movie collection that I've inherited.
Worst Batman Begins made 373.3 Million and it got the Sequel (for me was weaker the the first movie) and went on to make a billion. Superman returns made 391.1 and WB thought it flopped.
That's because they're adding up what they spent on Superman Lives. Tim Burton and Nicholas Cage got paid for that movie. Even though it was never made.
Film was fine, and it's box office return would have been okay too if not for the money they spent making it. What on earth did they spend that kind of money in the production on??
4:40 This wasn't really the budget. It didn't really cost that much. Warner Brothers tacked on the cost of their failed Nicolas Cage Superman Lives movie on to this film. They had already paid Nicolas Cage $10 million, plus all of the pre-production and costume tests and design costs, plus Tim Burton's fee. So Superman Returns had to make back its own budget, plus the budget of a previously failed film that never even started filming. Superman Returns is underrated and had it not been strapped with that other film's budget, and had WB pushed a sequel into production like was supposed to happen, I believe this franchise would still be going to this day.
Routh was the best thing in this film. Singer is no Donner, but his idea to place this behind Superman 2 was the right one. Too bad he didn't have someone like Tom Mankewitz to write the script! He also needed a better Lois Lane. Perhaps one that had chemistry with Routh.
Warner Bros Lumping in the Superman Lives budget with the Returns budget was like putting a bullet in their own knee. Idk why they didn’t get a tax write-off for “Lives”. They began shooting footage when they canceled it.
**** Kate Bosworth was NOT given the role of Lois Lane she auditioned for the role on Tape**** Later Brian Singer saw her video and made his decision to cast her. This is in the bonus DVD that came with Superman Returns. You can LITERALLY see Singer watch her Audition tape then say - Kate Bosworth as Lois Lane.
The movie has it’s ups and downs, but Brandon Routh has a tone of admiration and love for Superman, and I’m glad the CW gave him a chance to return to that
Returns failed because nothing in it could sell toys. Supes fights no one. He catches things. He lifts things. The only villain you could sell in toy form was Luthor and it wasn't even a battle. He put Kryptonite on Supes and kicked him a lot. It also failed because it was mostly a retread of Superman 1. Luthor wants land again. Whoopie. It failed because the actors for Clark and Lois had no chemistry. It takes place after Superman II, five years afterwards, but somehow all the characters look younger. It wasn't an awful film, but things like 'light on action' held it back from really cleaning up at the box office
They were trying to capture the magic of Christopher Reeve's first Superman film in that there was almost no conflict for most of the movie. It worked because of the writing and acting. They tried making Returns just as character driven but it fell flat.
I personally liked the film. But I loved the soundtrack. John Ottman really nailed it in adapting John Williams’ original leitmotifs and expanding on them! The biggest compliment I have for the film is that I happily rewatch it- unlike Man of Steel which makes me angrier every time I’ve seen it to the point where I can’t stand it.
I played the fuck outta the game that came out for this movie on the OG Xbox. It was the only game I know of where you can fly around as Superman in an open world.
It’s not a bad Superman film. And Brandon was a great Superman. It was great to see him step back into the role on crisis on infinite earths crossover.
The little action in Returns is fucking great but the movie is too long and badly paced in between. Bosworth is a total miscast as Lois. Everyone else was good. Just not a lot of energy. At least it understands Clark's better than Snyder's movies.
It's crazy. Superman coming back to Earth to find Zod ruling over and terraforming the planet is a much better story. I feel bad for Routh. The gave him a shit script, a Superboy suit instead of a Superman suit, and gave his Superman nothing to do. The best scene that was actually filmed that was cut. Routh's take on Clark was amazing at times.
The new Superman will be out in 2025 also 2025 will be the 95th birthday of the director of the 1978 Superman Movie Richard Donner also we will celebrate his birthday alongside the release of James Gunn's Superman in 2025 Joblo this man made Superman what he is today also great video on Superman Return i was born in the same year when it was released in theaters in 2006 also Christopher Reeves Superman is my favorite Superman Joblo you guys are still awesome.
The movie that made me disagree that Superman 3 and 4 were the worst Superman movies. Brandon Routh looked good as Superman but the suit was awful ..but I will say it looks a lot better than the new Superman suit lol
Met Routh in July 🤌🏽 was still star struck and didn’t know what to say, even though I prefer Cavill. Crazy how the president of WB said SR should’ve made 500m and be a success but MOS made almost $700m and wasn’t good enough
G'day it's Steven from Down Under A seriously underrated film, it had a lovely charm about it with a somewhat retro feel and an obvious connection to Superman & Superman 2, overall the cast was ideal and Brandon Routh was perfect for this dual role, too bad we didn't get to see more of him develop this character further. The SFX were very good for their time and nothing about this production felt cheap or off, one of my favourite SFX scenes was with the space shuttle ( Richard Branson cameo ) and crashing commercial airliner. A $400 million box office may have seemed like a modest success but I feel that in typical Warner Bros ineptness and incompetence they overspent and then cancelled the sequels, in my opinion they should've moved forward with a sequel, however if they had we may not have received the successful Man of Steel or have been introduced to the very capable and popular Henry Cavill. Right now I'm thinking that the ever failing Warner Bros being a hot mess and owing hundreds of millions of dollars in debt should consider releasing a directors cut of Superman Returns on physical media, if they have the content then bloody well release it to the fans and make a buck or two before you burn and crash in 2025...and let's hope for the sake of the world's first and greatest superhero known to mankind that the forthcoming and seemingly farcical Superman Legacy ( or whatever it's called today ) is a success and not the anticipated and evident disaster. I'm not a Gunn fan nor am I a Snyder fan but I did enjoy the so called Snyderverse, and Warner Bros/ DC has damaged this IP so severely that people are disinterested and the fandom is seriously fractured and divided, this is something never seen before. Look out the Gunntists are lurking and ready to pounce. Gunn + cultists = Gunntists
Why go to the theater and pay to see a low action, drab Superman film when Smallville was full fo twists and turns, bright, and overall doing Superman better?
Bryan Singer bailing from X-Men 3 to do Superman is also why Trick r' Treat didn't get a theatrical release and sat on the shelves for several years before a DVD release. His production company did Trick r Treat and Singer angered someone he shouldn't have angered.
I love this film. There are so many beautiful moments. Brandon Routh actually looks like an alien or more human than human. And most importantly, he took the beating like a G.
It was Hollywood greed that killed this movie and any sequels. They set their expectations of the money they would make too high. They needed to make another and build the franchise back up.
I haven't seen Superman Returns since its original release. I do remember a lot of us didn't know if it was a sequal, reboot, or stand alone. As a sequal no one realized it was a direct sequel to part 2 and not 4. That type of thing wasn't common then. When watching it a lot of it didn't make sense at the time. Why was he gone? When did he have a kid? It might supposed to the place in the 80s but it felt more like modern times. That just made it more confusing. I wanted to like this superman but I was a Reeves fan and probably didn't give this Superman a fair enough chance
Superman Returns was the third best of all the Superman movies. Superman The Movie, Superman II and then Superman Returns. Superman III and IV The Quest for Peace were horrendous as was the Man of Steel movies. I don’t have much faith in the upcoming Superman movie due out in 2025.
How did Lois remember sleeping with Superman but not that Clark is Superman? I remember looking forward to the Krypton stuff that they ended up cutting.
Brandon routh play superman again on arrow verse during the biggest cross over event, and producer said he was playing with same superman for superman returns too
While 'Superman Returns' is visually beautiful, I thought the movie was boring. To me, the movie felt like a partial rehash of '79 'Superman' while the new material wasn't my cup of tea. I found it amusing some time after the movie was released, 'Superman Returns' got bundled with 'Justice League Unlimited: Saving The World' as a Walmart-exclusive set...with the JLU cartoon being the featured DVD.
the storyline was crap, but the cast and visual effects are the shining light and it definitely was a nostalgic adventure for me growing up with Christopher Reeve
Kevin Spacy is so good in the film. My favorite piece of dialog from this film and Lex is "Now Fly" right after he stabs Superman with krypton in the back. I'm also happy Brandon got to do his version of Superman years later despite or Crisis turned out.
I saw this at the cinema when it first came out and I was just bored. There certainly was a genuine effort to try and make a good Superman movie but it fell flat on its face. It wasn't bad like Superman IV was, but just too long, slow and uninteresting. The best scene was the plane crash and it went downhill from there.
The pacing was off… made the movie feel longer than it was… they should have had a different more exciting villain for it being a re-boot… and Lex for a sequel
Superman returns isn't what I was talking about. I was talking about other superman, movies, and comic books that have been remade over and over talking about Superman's origin story.
Visually, SR is good and I didn't dislike any of the casting. If Singer had kept a lot of cut material in the film, such as the scenes of Supe exploring the remains of Krypton, Lex's deception of Kal Penn and not had the kid in it from the get go, it probably would have been better received.
This movie would have been more successful & spawned sequels if at the end Superman fought an robot the size of a building that Lex was in or controlling. Also Spacey isn't acting that him off camera.
Superman Returns was a pretty good movie, especially the stand out plane sequence, however Lex Luther has already been overused as a prime villain in previous movies, and also for many years on Smallville. They should have started with Brainiac or another villain, or have 2 villains. They needed a bigger draw at box office than just Lex as the prime villain.
My year 10 school formal had to be moved to another venue due to the filming of this film (scene on the roof top where superman gets shot in the eye). The production company paid for the upgrade and we all got to save superman paid for our formal.
Wow the movie could have been 30 minutes longer with a focus on a side character? The movie was already long enough. The darker lighting really evokes a sense of "sleep" that hinders anyone's enjoyment or entertainment from the movie.
I think it's likely to be the case that they had ALWAYS planned a sequel to SUPERMAN RETURNS. BUT they spent so much time planning for that, we were left with a sluggish slow paced story, scrutinising how he has returned to an unfamiliar modern Earth, where he boringly questions the need for his help & heroics, the plot line was thin & drawn out
they could’ve had it be an elseworlds superman story cause there’s liberties took that don’t have it fully fit as being after superman 2 such as the suit & some modern technology in metropolis when it should be tech from the 80’s but brandon done well at filling in the boots after christopher
kind of a funny fact and by going based the actors ages at the time of filming, clark 21 got underage lois 17 pregnant before leaving for five years. bosworth was only 21/22 during filming.
Thry should have tried a sequel, the biggest problem with the film was, not enough action, too long and no fight scene. A sequel could have easilly adresses all three
people kind of forget how kind of silly Superman and Superman II are and this was meant to be a sequel to those movies. And I would have Superman Returns any day over Superman III or Quest for Peace.
They should have just done a reboot because routh and bostworth were fairly young and too have them play Chris and Margot's Clark and Lois was the worst mistake they could ever make
I was ok with how they didd this but it had flaws. I actually thought Spacy's renditions of Luther was off the chartd great. he made him feel evil while working with what he had to work with as a character.
I enjoyed this film but it lacks fun and exiting action scenes. Also, I'm not a fan of the early digital cinematography. The movie looks like it was shot with home video camcorder.
He was also a good Superman-but in an underwhelming movie 🎥 Needed a new villain ( Brianiac, Metallo) Also they should have put the “S” on the back of the cape
Underrated movie. It has its flaws but I still enjoy watching it. Brandon Routh definitely nailed the Reeve version of Superman and I was so happy to see him return years later
You said it… great example of what alien Romulus perfected… paying homage as well as keeping the paying audience entertained
Whatever flaws this movie has, it sure isn't Routh. He's amazing

It's Bobby Long! Star quarterback from my high school!
"TRUTH JUSTICE AND THE AMERICAN WAY", was the original saying. Which is NOT a problem.
Superman Returns was released on June 30th 2006, not on June 28th 2006.
I enjoyed it much more than “Man of Steel”.
people kind of forget how kind of silly Superman and Superman II are and this was meant to be a sequel to those movies. And I would have Superman Returns any day over Superman III or Quest for Peace.
They should have just done a reboot because routh and bostworth were fairly young and too have them play Chris and Margot's Clark and Lois was the worst mistake they could ever make

Spacey was found not guilty on every single charge.
Donner - not Lester! Donner brought him to life. The Richard Donner cut of part 2 is superior.
I was ok with how they didd this but it had flaws. I actually thought Spacy's renditions of Luther was off the chartd great. he made him feel evil while working with what he had to work with as a character.
"Truth, Justice and the AMERICAN WAY"
I enjoyed this film but it lacks fun and exiting action scenes. Also, I'm not a fan of the early digital cinematography. The movie looks like it was shot with home video camcorder.
He was also a good Superman-but in an underwhelming movie 🎥
Needed a new villain ( Brianiac, Metallo)
Also they should have put the “S” on the back of the cape
I do not understand what the hate is about with this movie is actually my favorite Superman right after Superman
Should bring Routh back for a Kingdom Come movie.
