      I agree with you... and they also alienated him from many elements of the storyline as the seasons moved on. You want your favorite characters that you invest emotionally in, or what's the point of the series. Which is hell to do and keep everyone coming back. They should have gone and done spin-offs. Like star trek, it would allowed for the older show to fade away. And newer ideas to flourish. where the 1st season is introduction to the worlds situation, New characters and previous series guests and so on. They looked to make something as integrately entwined as the wheel of time series and that's hell on tv.

    • @richetoku
      @richetoku Месяц назад +107

      Too complex to bring in new viewers without them being lost. Ultimately, I think this show failed because of the TV format. New viewers could not just jump in and so, as they lost viewers, they were not gaining new ones to replace them or grow their audience. This show would have greatly benefited to the streaming format and would probably still be going if it started as a streaming show since new people could watch from the start.

    • @M4570DON
      @M4570DON Месяц назад +84

      @@richetoku Outside of procedural dramas and reality shows, all tv shows have a format that would leave a new viewer lost if they just jumped in on a random episode of a random season. That's not complexity. That's just how narratives work. Also, while the show aired on SyFy, it was streaming on Netflix.

      I saw this comment at the top before watching, so had it in mind still when OP was discussing. I think the point was that this show was not a streaming original, so in order to gain new watchers after the first season, viewers would be asked to jump in to a story that really built upon past events more than some. I don't think it was meant to be critical of the writers so much as just to explain why viewers who stopped watching weren't being replaced at the same rate. Like, compare with Doctor Who, which has constant callbacks, but they are never central to understanding the current episode.

    I think The Magicians is one of the best examples of a property being adapted in a way that is true to the spirit of the original work without being a direct "faithful" adaptation. I think they really nailed being "The Magicians" while still creating something new. The series includes many great moments from the books, but doesn't just rehash the entire story in another format. Don't get me wrong, I love faithful adaptations, particularly because unfaithful ones usually go VERY wrong. This is one of the few examples that went RIGHT in my opinion, they managed to do just enough different and just enough the same and I love it. I'm also not that bothered by them killing off the main character, I don't think the way they ended the series was all that bad either. The last season might not have been the strongest season, but it wasn't as much of a let down as many other shows.

    • @Jsa460
      @Jsa460 Месяц назад +6

      That's the thing. One of the complaints about the show by many people was that the main characters weren't all that likeable. They're NOT meant to be likeable. Magic comes from pain so they're often all a bit broken in some way than can manifest in a way that they are not people you would normally want to be besties with. For example Quentin tends towards being unhappy and sullen with a wannabe nice guy main character syndrome. Alice is socially awkward and often comes across as haughty and cold. Penny just comes across as an angry AH much of the time. Margo is the privilaged pretty girl who comes across as catty, over competitive and shallow. Elliot can be defensive, sarcastic and underneath that seems often seems depressive, insecure and dependent. Anyway, you get the picture. They do evolve to become characters you may decide to like and the viewer learns more about them and why they are behaving as they do which gives the background to understand them, but on episode 1 you're not meant to think they're a great bunch of people that would be fun to hang out with. They're meant to be more complicated characters that are played off against the concept that people who are happy and fulfilled do not tend to be the ones capable of learning magic.

I even remember at the time reading an interview with one of the producers saying he needed to go because the Magicians was about subverting fantasy tropes, and having a white male protagonist is the biggest fantasy trope. While Quentin's death may have contributed to ending the show, I found it very meaningful and a logical conclusion of his arc. Also, speaking as someone who considers The Magicians to be his no. 1 favourite show of all times (sorry Buffy, your reign was long and well-deserved), I much prefer it running for four perfect and one very good season as opposed to it overstaying it's welcome, becoming watered-down and thus tainting it's legacy.

      Q's funeral was one of the best scenes in the show, period. I think it also made it possible for other characters to fulfill their fates without worrying about leaving him behind. I don't think Alice would have been ok as the new librarian if Q was still in the world. Elliot may have never let himself be open to love again if Q was still a possibility. The conversation Q has with Penny at his funeral (asking if he deep down wanted to die & that's why he sacrifices himself, etc.) made it feel to me like this was always an intended outcome the show had been working towards since season 1. It also gave so much more meaning and reason for Q's ability being able to fix small broken things. I'm never happy when a character I love is written off a show but in this case it felt right, noble, purposeful and necessary for the other characters to fulfill their destiny too.

I can see how it might've been difficult for some casual viewers to follow, but the world-building was great in my opinion, and I particularly liked how they developed the magic system and hand movements. I found it a little odd at first, but the way they broke it down into mathematics made it feel more "real" if that makes sense, which I thought was super cool. It was also nice to see how free and open they were with sexuality, as well as love in general amongst the characters, (both romantic and platonic). Margot and Elliot's dynamic was fantastic, and the Quentin/Elliot episode was so sweet but sad.

After Q got killed off (even knowing it was coming bc the actor was leaving) I couldn’t do it. For me personally the story doesn’t work without him. It wasn’t that I wasn’t interested in the other characters, I absolutely love them (even if the show did my girl Alice EXTREMELY dirty…) I feel like the writing just went south. I can’t even do a real rewatch of the show bc I just cannot watch his last season. The first few seasons were really great, especially the first season. It’s a shame though, I wish more people knew about the books & the show. I was pleasantly surprised to see this video up. I like the fact Magic isn’t just about saying the right words & pointing a wand. It’s a WHOLE freaking process, I think it’s cool they have to physically use their hands to create the spell, it’s something you have to practice, work on constantly to get just right. Don’t even get me started about Circumstances & the position of the moon at any given time. The breakdown is INSANE! It gave me an appreciation for how hard they have to work, even ones like Alice where they make it look easy. Quentin's whole POV changed from thinking primarily of himself, and thinking that the world was better off without him (and he without the world), to thinking and giving everything for his friends, and by extension, the world.
      He went from having a warped sense of his place in the world, and depressed that he lacked a place in other's hearts, to playing a pivotal role on a grand scale and in all those intimate emotional ones. Even if he didn't completely understand, we the audience definitely should have by the end.

    When I tell people about this series I explain simply as, "Think of it as Harry Potter and Narnia, but make it for adults, and add sex, drugs, and rock and roll." Lol! In the books, Lev goes more into detail how magic works. And as a practicing Pagan/Witch, I can honestly say that I feel like he did some real world research, because we take into consideration the time of day, location of the nearest body of water, moon phase, etc., etc. And in the books, all of these details are explained. As for Tutting, while it is fanciful in the show, some practitioners actually do hand gestures while performing rituals and spell work, so it isn't something just made up for the books/show. I thought it was awesome that Lev incorporated these details into his world and it made me fall in love with the series so much more.

Yes they are above an ordinary human who doesn't know magic, but when you compared them to the magical creatures and other magicians, they aren't particularly special. And whenever I think about it I am always brought to the scene when Quentin learns that his specialty is minor mending. It inspires me because the main characters are just ordinary people to some degree, but even for not being special at all, they have had a huge impact on the world.

    I strongly disagree with Quentin’s death being a fridge. Fridging is a trope, not the actual cause of a characters death. You’re conflating the two. In this case, Q was not fridged because his death served a purpose. It was set up extremely early in the season and previous seasons involving the mirror world, there was proper foreshadowing.
    Being fridged requires the character’s death to only serve a single purpose: as motivation for other characters. Q didn’t do that. He saved his friends and the WORLD in the ultimate sacrifice and died doing what he always did. The core of his legacy. Just a little minor mending.
    That is NOT fridging. And the only reason it’s a trope is because so many popular characters in comics and film have their entire families murdered and it is what makes them the main character. Not the main character being killed of for some emotional rugpull for supporting characters. Take a look at Batman’s parents. Uncle Ben. The punisher’s entire bloodline.
    Q’s death is, imo, one of the most beautiful and powerful ways to send off a beloved character when the actor is ready to move on to other projects.
    I think it speaks volumes about the audience when half of them leave because the one conventionally attractive white guy gets a really good death scene and follow up in the afterlife. Especially in a show that gives us clear rules and expectations about death and the underworld, and how it’s a temporary stop before the afterlife. To explore that with a beloved character after their greatest moment in life is quite interesting, to me at least.

Quentin's death was deeply important to the arc of his own character, the underlying themes of the show, and overall plot. A character that is fridged is one that exists solely to die for the benefit of another character's development. That does not apply here, even a little bit.

    Great show! I miss it. One of the shows which didn't insult the viewers intelligence. Totally original and not predictable.

    I've never really gotten into fantasy type of shows.... Except The Magicians! LOVED IT!!! I was very sad when it ended.

    The hand gestures were my least favorite thing about the show. They just looked dorky outside the context of dancing. I much prefer the more fluid hand movements that Agatha Harkness uses in the MCU. Something like that would have been more visually pleasing.

      it gave a technical aspect to the magic practice. it was cool

      The whole point is that magic was more technical. It was a field of study to be learned and mastered, not just something to feel your way around. I thought the hand gestures were awesome *and* visually pleasing.

      I felt like it was another way to nod to modern gay culture, esp in NYC, which a lot of the show riffs on. Wizard duels & demos felt like watching voguing 😅Haven't caught the WandaVision spinoff yet to compare tho.

      @ I see that now. I just enjoy the more graceful and fluid hand gestures that were created for Agatha. I also like how she’s used them for so many years that the gestures have become part of how she moves in general. It’s a great show, even if you’re not into the whole MCU thing, which I’m not so much anymore. I still absolutely LOVE The Magicians. I’ve watched the entire series about 6 times now.

    Despite its faults, I will always immensely value this show for how unapologetically bold they decided to be with their choices. Not enough people are willing to create tv that genuinely stands out from the crowd.

    Quentin's death really struck me on a emotional level. It's one of the first series that really made me 'cry' about a character death. Thought that episode on itself was a masterpiece, I felt like the series went downhill after his death. It's a shame really, this is probably my all time favorite series.
