My mum has always been a big Narniahead and she read the entire Chronicles series to me. Never really got back into that world once I became interested in other fantasy so it would actually be really nice to see the series from your POV

Loving the new set up. 11/10 would add to my Pinterest board 👍 Congrats on your move.
now THAT is a compliment
I had thought the background couldn't be more charming but then David brings more plants in. Nice way to "go green" as it were! Oh and I think i know the direction this theory will go...
I don't know if this is a hot take in the LML community but your analysis of A Song of Ice and Fire through the lens of mythology has always been fascinating and extremely thought provoking.
thank you! I'll take it as a great compliment :)
@DavidLightbringer My RUclips recap says I spent nearly 12,000 minutes listening to you this year. That is 110% because of the variety of ways you torture uh I mean, analyze the text.
It is a correct take! And The Laughing Storm is one of the coolest epiphets in all of fiction imo
The Smiling Knight is another good one but it's only effective because we learn that in reality, he was an infamous criminal. This gives us an image of a killer deranged enough to take great pleasure in hurting people.
With the Laughing Storm though, we dont need much more than that to see him as a great champion skilled both in battle and courtly appeal
Definitely not a hot take in this community! GRRM pulls a lot from mythology and Lightbringer is great at connecting those dots.
Love the Green myth talk. Also I’d totally geek out over some Narnian chronicles discussion. The relationship between Tolkien and Lewis is so interesting.
The split between the Green Men and the White Walkers mirrors the split in the traditional fae of the Seelie and Unseelie. Normally referred to as the Light and Dark Elves, the Seelie are the traditional reclusive, mischievous, and potentially dangerous fae most are familiar with while the Unseelie are angry, dangerous, and outright hostile to humanity.
Not sure I’ve ever been more excited for a LML notification. Can’t wait to watch tonight, thank you David!
Dave!!! the art, the film setup, the humor-this hit all the marks. You’ve been killing it lately!!🎉❤
The Others being corrupted/iced-up Green men makes a lot of sense. I remember the last major video on the Green Men/Old Ones that you made, the theory really kicked off, it seems. 😮
David, you make these videos look effortless. You draw precise conclusions out of an extremely dense and sometimes vague text. Keep it up brother, you are doing the 7’s work!
haha, nice handle
I love all of your theories, analysis, and breakdowns. Please don't ever stop.
Appreciate the entertainment man you really bring the story to life I started reading the books after watching one of your videos a few years back keep up the great work I’m hyped for this video 👍🏼
Really gives cutting back the trees from the Wall an extra layer of meaning.
I get chills imagining the Others appearing down south when the magic holding them back is released. It will be one POV of chaos to the next. It didn’t make sense why the Night King didn’t fly south and take control of Kingslanding and its inhabitants in the show.
the Night King is an invention by the show,
To a certain extent, invent is too strong, and gives them too much credit. George clearly created the Night’s King and the Great Other. Obviously the show combined those ideas into the Night King. Also I specifically said “in the show” in my original comment.
As someone who is fluent in Irish i just have a quick note on the pronunciation of Tuatha Dé Danann. We would pronounce Tuatha as two syllable. Very close to how one pronounces Twah in hawk twah. In Munster irish at least.
Two-ah would be close.

One of the topics I'm most passionate about, thank you for exploring this in such detail, David! :)
The new artwork is fantastic! congrats to you and Jeremy! great stuff 👏👏
Props to you David, the set design is super cozy. And the side art is very welcome
I would LOVE some Narnia lore videos!!!
When you said that "weir could also mean dam" it made me think of how the Wall is kinda like a dam, and if it's structure is made out of weirwoods that would add another layer to the word play.
it's described as a frozen stream, and since it weeps, it's also a frozen "veil of tears"
It stops spirits, monsters and dragons but Nightswatchmen and their friends can pass.
One could even describe the others turning people into ice wights as some kind of corrupted mating ritual
dude when i got the notification i thought it was another short but 53 minutes? This is the best thing ever!!
Yay! Happy Holly-Days Dave!
Hehe. Haus Lightbringer slaying boots down ✨️💃🏾👌🏾👌🏾

Another fascinating adventure into mythology, symbolism, and the importance of conflict between humanity and nature (supernatural) in Martin's world. The emphasis on the Fair Folk, ancient trees, ancient barrows, conflict between people and ancient forest spirits, and many of the other points discussed in the video reminded me a lot of the opening chapters of Fellowship of the Ring. We know George is inspired by Tolkien's work with a goal of subverting or adapting elements of it to make it fit his vision of the world and of morality. What if the world he was building and the core symbolic components drew inspiration from elements of Tolkien's Old Forest and the myths behind it?
In Middle Earth, the Old Forest was a dark and ancient woodland made up of oaks, ash, and other ancient trees. This is the home of the oldest beings in the world, born long before the elves awoke on the far side of the world. The three oldest beings are Tom Bombadil, Goldberry, and the corrupted and vengeful tree spirit Old Man Willow. The Old Forest was the last of what was once a vast wood, cut down by wave upon wave of beings arriving in Middle Earth, until the ancient magical forest was reduced to a fragmented and shadowy patchwork. The tree shepherds, Ents, now just a legend rarely seen by common folk. Bombadil relates that of the corrupted trees of the Old Forest, "none were more dangerous than the Great Willow; his heart was rotten, but his strength was green; and he was cunning, and a master of winds, and his song and thought ran through the woods on both sides of the river. His grey thirsty spirit drew power out of the earth and spread like fine root-threads in the ground, and invisible twig-fingers in the air, till it had under its dominion nearly all the trees of the Forest from the Hedge to the Downs."
The Hedge Tom Bombadil refers to is the giant living wall created by the ruling family of the Hobbits to hold back the ancient forest that seeks to reclaim the land from the settlers that usurped it. For many many generations, the Bucklanders maintained the hedge to guard against the danger of a vengeful forest on the other side. The only way through it was a great private gate that the ruling family could access to clear back the forest from the far side of the hedge to prevent the trees from invading Buckland.
Within the forest was a tributary river called the Withywindle that flowed to the Brandywine. The entire forest acted as a catchment for the Withywindle, funneling and channeling the water and everything else towards a specific point, the clutches of Old Man Willow (the weir/garth/ancient demented tree that ensnares and consumes people). Old Man Willow represents corrupted nature, the fusion of the tree with an imprisoned and vengeful ancient mind poisoning the living world around it with darkness. Tolkien writes of "how that grey thirsty earth-bound spirit had become imprisoned in the greatest Willow of the [Old] Forest."
On the far eastern edge of the forest, we find the Barrow Downs, the ancient burial mounds of long-dead men. The wights of these men still haunt the mounds. These are based on the ancient barrows, passage tombs, and cairns of Britain, Ireland and the Northern European legends. For the Irish, they are the homes and palaces of the Fair Folk, also known as the People of the Mounds. Tolkein's Barrow-wights come from draugrs of Norse myth, so we can learn something important about George RR Martin's symbolism from the multi-faceted meaning of "draugr" in Old Norse poetry. While the most visible and common form of draugr is the undead knights or spirits of ancient warriors that do battle with Icelandic or Norse heroes for the treasures (or magical weapons) buried with them in their tombs/palaces. What makes the concept of draugr more interesting in our case is the double meaning of the word through the Old Norse concept of kennings, which uses wordplay to add meaning. The other meaning of draugr, "a tree trunk or dry dead wood, or in poetry could refer to a man or warrior," comes from one of the Norse origins of humanity. One belief is that Odin created the first men from trees, so in Norse poetic wordplay, a felled tree's trunk has the same symbolic meaning as a dead man's corpse. We have seen these revenant undead all over the place in ASOIAF so far and the connection to the trees is highly visible.
The Starks are the children of the First Men, born of the trees, and the keepers of the largest and grandest portal tomb/barrow mound in Westeros. Based on the proximity of Winterfell to the Barrowlands and the construction of Winterfell atop a massive portal tomb or barrow mound, the Starks could be living in a draugr's palace, guarding the dead and the hidden treasures buried deep in the Otherworld below. The iconography of wolves for the Starks adds to this from the symbolic connection between wolves and death/the dead in Celtic and Norse mythology. The Norse saw wolves as the untamable force of nature while also associating them with the cyclical nature of life and death. Celts in Ireland saw wolves as the intermediaries between the living and the dead with the ability to communicate with spirits.
In the Fellowship of the Ring, when the hobbits escape the trance and death ceremony of the wight, Merry (the keeper of the key to the Hedge gate) wakes remembering "only a death not his own" with the personality of the dead warrior's spirit within him freed from the evil corruption of the Witch King's wight. This fits well with the idea that some of our heroes in ASOIAF may need to enter the trance of the dead to rescue the dead warriors/trees from the evil corruption preventing the world from healing.
hey it's a super long comment that was actually outstanding, thank you. Yes there is certainly more to be said about draugrs and wights in Norse myth and how that influences ASOIAF, and I love the bit about them being analogous to felled or rotting trees. That askr / embla myth is one I think GRRM is thinking about.
That's cool about Old Man WIllow, it's been a while since I've read the main books. Sounds like something worth exploring re: the corruption of the weirnet and the idea of AA's dead spirit being in there as the Great Other
Yes! The ents! They are like Green Men and living, talking and walking weirwoods all at once! Guardians of the wood!
Banger video, as per usual👍

Late to the drop, but so hyped for this!! Praising Garth as I watch
Hello everyone. Much love from South Africa 🇿🇦.
Haven't had a chance to listen to this yet, but i sure as hell will. Love this topic. History and lore of the Wight Walkers, baby
2:17 YASSSSSS NARNIA
Would actually love to see some Narnia stuff from you, even if just in the form of parallels and inspirations for tsoiaf. GRRM definitely read those books.
I’m here for the ride my friend I’m here for all the analysis. Praise Garth and long may you bring the light! Also that cabinet is 💯 the vibe.
im praising Garth so hard right now
(Garth is one lucky fella)
🌚🌠
Just got home from a run to get Garth-praising-supplies to see this upload. I am R-E-A-D-Y
@Leif_of_Kasper I have the sugar of Garth. The sweetness of the forest is not always green, nor is it always a flower. In truth, it resembles more closely Weirwood paste that has been dried to be crumbly. The Old magic of the woods, distilled by the arts of man.
@Leif_of_Kasper and by "man" I'm using it in the archaic sense meaning "people" in general. There are many women and non-binary friends who work in the industry now. Especially in places with 100% legalization! I'm glad it can create jobs for people, in fact my bestie manages his own Garthstore
Been waiting for this one since your calendar art/isle of faces video 😬🎉
I'm in the 25th minute of your video. You just mentioned the ice spiders, & I have to tell you- I was listening to a video regarding lore on the Nahanni Valley(?) in the far northern reaches of Canada & there was mention of "spiders the size of grizzlies" or something to that end. It made me think of ASOIAF, & you- so I'd already been dying to bring it to your attention & the instant you mentioned the spiders, it sprang back to mind & I had to tell you.
Oh yeah- also, I would adore some Narnia analysis.
Dang, I love this set. The radial cabinet thingy is pretty cool. We have a nice cosmic breadtube vibe.
Phenomenal work as always 🙏
YES YES YES!!! PLEASE DO CHRONICLES OF NARNIA SPECIFICALLY THE BOOKS THAT WERE NOT MADE INTO MOVIES! THE MAGICIAN'S NEPHEW, THE HORSE AND HIS BOY AND THE SILVER CHAIR WERE MY FAVORITES!!!❤❤❤
Behind my house is a 300+ year old Indian Burial Tree. I'm nearly 7 feet tall and it's over 7 feet around and still alive. Behind it, embedded in the mountain is a circle of 13 stones. All it needs is a spooky face.
Yay!A new video!Thank you!Have a happy new year!
Love this episode content but also love the decor... Thats a gorgeous cabinet
Regarding "Can you plant a Weirwood Tree?", yes you can. You are also right the roots do have to connect to the rest of the weerwood root system for it to grow. This comes from the chapter discussing that unlike every other castle (I'm guessing not including dorne) the northerns brought a Weirwood Tree to as a gift, the attempts at planting on in the Eyrie always failed, which they dont put much attention to in book but as we the audience know the Eyrie has a solid rock base we are left to wonder if the Weirwoods connect to each other physically, not just magically.
it doesn't say how the attempt was made tho - did they take a cutting from a living weirwood? We've never seen seeds. You can't tear one out of the ground. I'm guessing a cutting... it's interesting that it's not specified
@DavidLightbringer I'd always assumed it was a cutting but hadn't thought much of the mechanics they used, given GRRM was also involved in Elden Ring which has a small mountain of lore around tree maintenance it would be wild if it ended up being important to the story of ASOIAF.
I just noticed the little Weirwood tree on your beautiful cabinet thank you for this i needed something to Brighton me up
been listening to the book's on U Tube by David Reads ASOIAF that I'm totally enjoying
Do you think it's possible that in order to get rid of the white walkers or purify the corrupted weirwood trees, that they will have to combine different forms of magic? Especially when you consider that the official name for this series/saga is "a song of ice and fire"
yes - Jon will probably be frozen like Coldhands and could provide the ice
'While a thousand stars watched coldly" - '"A thousand eyes, and one"
Bravo! Keep up the great work D. BEEEZY!!
Gimme the Narnia goods lore daddy
hahaha that's what i call a request
Hereforth ...this shall be thine title..Lore Daddy 😌✨️... Amen
Has anybody considered that the word ‘weir’ refers to the old Germanic word for man, as in werewolf, or wolf man. In fact, the old gothic word would have been ‘waír’, which is pretty damn close. In summary, weirwoods are man trees or people trees, thus the faces etc.
Praise Garth! 🎉
Chronicles of Narnia from your perspective would be incredible!
The Old German Forests were so thick there is historic testimony of Roman soldiers going mad after a week of marching through the woods and never seeing an end to the dense growth.
Narnia lore would be amazing. It would work well for your channel, and when you drop HOTD or ASOIAF material, you know it would be welcomed with open arms.

A narnia video would be amazing!
Bless this Stoney Day
Awhile back I commented in another video about the Yin/Yang imagery Martin creates in the Prologue, AGOT. The symbol helps to reveal the setting for the “Dance with me then” moment as an ancient crater.
Yes please cover Narnia!
I feel like this adds to my theory that it was the cutting down of the weirwood trees that created the others. If we're trying to figure out what caused the others to become disconnected, then perhaps the most obvious is one of the best answers. Their connection was quite literally cut. As you said yourself, all the weirwood trees south of the neck were cut down. It's just something I've been workshopping, but I think it could explain a lot.
Good video. Long enough to have lots in it but not as rambly as you sometimes get when you are too exited and keep digging in the same place :p
In the limited Dungeons and Dragons line for Lego, the Forrest Men have antlers attached to their hoods, but they have dwarf legs, so kinda combined the two.
Praise Garth!!!
My favorite part of the godswood scene was Daemon seeing the green man and going welp I’m tripping again, oh joy. Like he was just fiiine I’ll have one more crazy AF vision
