My favourite antenna Jpole in 450 Ohms ladder all the time I've made lots off it for different bands great for DX it has lower angle work better than siro 827 and lower noises.
Hi Al, The beauty of the Yaesu ft-920 is it has so many levels of filtering, noise blanking, IPO, and DSP. It's great because it's very "hands on" Incredibly the radio is regarded as "old skool" Kids these days haven't got a clue!! 😂
If I could find a way to get my recieve loads better and cure the QRM I think that would be a winner. Cheers bud. I really dont think Rich would join me tbh.
Great vid Alan ' most proberly the building as you say ' have you ever thought of using a super sled lifting parafoil for wire antennas ofcourse that would give you alot more height clearing the building as you've said before you can't install antenna on the roof ' got some antenna work to do this weekend on small repair on the yagi ' the joys ' good weekend
A J-Pole has a lower angle of radiation than the dipole. This would make a big difference depending on the antenna Ady was using. J-POLES - are great IF you choke them at the feedpoint. A lot of j-poles that aren't choked with ferrites, coax coils, etc are coupled in to the common-mode of the coax braid, which can skew the pattern. This may not be a big issue - it all depends if you REALLY want the antenna to do all the work. Try the Jpole across the pond it should work better than the dipole if they are pointing North West!
I believe that you are correct. The building could be reacting with the antenna's radiation and recieve signals. I have watch you experiment with a lot of different antennas. The dipole is the winner.
Interesting experiment Al,seems a mixed bag at your place, definitely worth trying up on your perch against your usual setup. I also need to see more of those collectibles on that top shelf!👌😄
It's a damn pain here for radio, but I keep trying and it keeps me on my toes. I'll certainly give you a tour of the back shelf one day. Big star wars fan.
I have 2 wire verticals hanging in a tree at the same height (40ft)one is a hawkins 58 and the other a jpole the jpole outperforms the hawkins on transmit and receive pretty much every time
Very interesting, there is a tree close by, but not sure the coax would quite reach, but I keep eyeing it up and wondering if I could somehow get one up there. Cheers.
Hi Alan can you get that antenna right up on the roof of that building i also live in a block of units and i have my I MAX 2000 up on the roof of the apartment block about 100 feet high it screams out 73 43 WHISKEY RADIO 044 DOWN UNDER
I know its a long shot but with all the radio's you've got any chance you would consider selling you alinco dx 70 I had one years ago and I've got an itch to get another one. it was a radio I wish I had never sold.
Hi a very long shot and sorry , but no chance as it is a fantastic radio, but ill keep my ears open for one if that helps? I know when I sold my stuff back in 1996 i wish I never had 😞
find a c. w. beacon on 10 meters and swop, a 20% s/n or more drop is worth a few s points... hearing station back of box is better than not hearing them at all... id give it 2/3 weeks to average the test in different directions etc...
Cheers the problem is its to close to my block of flats and I really do need to get any antenna away from the building , but its all worth a go and see what happens.
you wont like me Al... but your ALC can come up to 70 /80 % and turn compression off... you, ll get sharper penetratining audio i would think.. no red on ALC... you, ll get more average power too...better in DX at least... imho... you have good mike
No problem bud i actually got settings for the Mic from another RUclipsr as I do like my audio to be spot on, all I can do experiment and I get very good audio reports, I don't mind tweaking though.👍
@@Al.26TC101 Radio is strange, I asked for a radio check one day, we were a good few miles apart, a big mountain was between us, he was working at the bottom on the other side. He should not have heard me at all, yet we were getting very good signals to each other! I have seen less stop a signal before. Never ceases to amaze me, there is always something to surprise one. Lol yep I have heard good things about a few of the yeasus with excellent filtering, maybe my next radio to try.
You have a nice looking set up from what I was able to see. Great video as always. ✌✌
Cheers bud, can be difficult from here, but it works well and I just keep trying to make it the best it can be. Keep your ears open for me

Cheers bud , it certainly seems to be working well, I'm going to try and get it further out away from the building and just see what happens.
Hi Al hope your well mate , I will have a listen for you tomorrow on the bands ,if you can put a post on RUclips with a frequency that help 👍
Sorry bud as much as I wanted to make it out today I've had other things that needed sorting, hence my late reply. All good though, just life.

Your videos are fascinating. That app seems quite useful as well. I wonder if you can get permission for an antenna on the top of your building?
Cheers , im afraid i cant get it on the roof I have asked but afraid its a no go 😞

Ajust the bandwidth to mid for dxing you will get more talk power wide when its local
I don't need an app to see what is blocking my signal, I just have to look out the window at all the mountains! 😐
