- UPDATE: my updated review here - • Amazon Echo and Dot re...
The Amazon Echo is a great product, especially if you can picture yourself using it in any of the scenarios from the video. Check the latest pricing here: geni.us/amznecho
I also highly recommend using wemo switches with the Echo for lamps and other things, like in my case my christmas tree - amzn.to/1TGfgMm
In this review, I did not go over every single feature with the Echo, but instead, I wanted to show the main uses that I think the majority of people would find helpful and interesting.
Using it with Hue lights was just awesome.
Thanks for watching!

I got one for an 83 year old, and he loves it. He would never log on to Pandora, or listen to a pod cast or an audio book. Just tuning in the radio was a chore. With Echo he just says play and the call letters and the station comes on. It's opened up the internet to him and being from the Radio generation he likes to listen and the sound quality is much better than a 1945 Victrola. I would highly recommend it for the elderly as long as you are willing to do some tech support.
* Old Time Radio
* Pill Reminder
* Controls lights, he no longer has to go into a dark room to turn on a light
* News and weather on command
Froshewoo now this it what it should be used for. elderly. not the pieces of fuck 30 something's that are too lazy to work and do dishes
first name last name It doesn't do dishes, deludenoid.
Actually I used to own a 1930s 'Stromberg Carlson' radio that had excellent sound quality.
Thanks techfreshness for taking the time to share such a thorough review!
I still use and love this model. Was our first Echo and I think it is the nicest non-screen Echo that Amazon ever made.
Definitely the most honest review i have seen on Echo, Good job man.
+Rodgen Hope thansk a lot rodgen
Best and most thorough review I've seen to date. Thanks!
Love my Echo. I have three in my house and an Echo Button too. Starting to use TP-Link to run my lights.
Mine arrived yesterday, so far I am truly amazed
A thorough and relevant evaluation; very well done!
Great, practical demo of Echo. Your videos are great. Thanks for sharing them with us.
I love my new Echo, I haven't touched any light switches in a week. I bought one for my friends in ATL, gonna bring it down nex4t week for their birthday.
Great review! i love your balance between appreciating new, useful technology that integrates with my life bigtime... and when a feature is really not practical nor helpful and once the newness wears off it will just be another shelf decoration. props.
+Scott McGregor thanks so much scott! my sentiments exactly
awesome video, covers everything and honest. glad u pointed the out the ups, downs, and hopes for the next release.
That was one of the better reviews I've seen for practical usage. Nice video, thanks.
+condor1016 you are welcome! and thank you
They have improved Spotify. I've had mine since late Nov... frankly I don't know how I'd live w/o it now... especially for the shopping list feature. Love the paranoia comments in the comment section. They really made me laugh. This is one of, if not THEE best review video I've seen so far. (and I've watched a bunch) Thanks!
Great video on Alexa. I got mine yesterday. I turned on this video and when he said "Alexa, when does the Hawks play, my Alexa gave me the same answer! I love it!
The review I've been looking for, well done.
Great review, I enjoyed the style of it and the way you do the demonstrations. Subscribed and liked, keep up the great work.
+Liam Arvin thanks a ton liam, coming up with the style of the video is like the hardest part for me and what takes the most time, glad you liked it!
This was an excellent video. I am considering an Echo. This was so helpful. Thank you for posting.
I have had this for a while now and I agree I recently moved to a condo and use echo much more with a 1 floor home. glad u finally got your hands on one. keep up the great work
+DieselDan09 thanks dan! you were right, the thing is pretty great.
Received an Echo Dot for Christmas. Been playing with it since. I LOVE IT! Ask it to check weather, sports update, play Beatles or Oldies music. By the way, I LOVE IT!
excellent. so glad you are enjoying it
What an amazing product. With this thing I'll no longer have to take the arduous five steps to my nearest light switch. Not to mention the added comfort of my home being recorded with voice recognition technology at every second of every day. Sounds like a great idea, 5 stars, must buy.
haha, what about going all the way upstairs to set the temp. if you can have the conveniences of life why not?
Thanks for the concepts you have shared here.
Great review. It really gives you the most complete information and benefits of the Echo.
This was a great review! I didn't really understand what the Echo was, and your review was very helpful. :)
+Cindy H excellente!
Love my Echo's, I have three of them. Audible audiobooks, general radio and music listening, sleep timers, alarms, occasional quick answers to math questions, spelling, wikipedia info.
For me worth it for the Audible integration alone. Love it for that most of all.
like the features, setup was difficult for some of my devices (August Door lock, ruclips.net/user/postUgkxhB5YOMNj04GuoAosExygP4cH-dKeb4aB Bose speaker)... but all switches and outlets (5), thermostat, tankless water heater. Unfortunately all I can do is turn on/off Bose. It doesn't support volume or changing channels, but I believe that is due to the particular speaker I have.... Worth getting if you already have other devices to use it with... I don't sit around and ask Alexa questions much so that doesn't really matter to me....
Great info, thank you for posting. I would get one but from what I hear my UE Boom would play music better (sound better) and that is one of the main reasons I would want one of these.
I have had the Echo for a month and I agree with all of the comments and suggestions. Excellent video review.
You answered all the questions I had about the Amazon Echo. But I might wait until next generation so it can get more features and updates
+SomdahSaysSo yeh i hear you, a lot of people are waiting too, the good thing is they are updating the current echo constantly at least. but glad i was able to answer your questions!
Best review on Echo I've come across. Thanks.
+Gerard Brown welcome, and thank you
One of the better reviews of the Echo on RUclips. I like how the reviewer gave the viewer and sense of how the product is in real world rather than others' which were done in a studio and just spoke to its features.
Why did it seem like you were shouting whenever you spoke to Alexa? Did you feel like you needed to, to be heard? Or would it not register if you spoke too softly? I'd be interested on how low one could speak for it to still accurately pick up the words.
I have to admit this was the best and most honest review of the Amazon Echo I have seen. I have a large house and was thinking it might not be a good idea to get one right now. I figured a smaller home would be they way to go and your view covered that for me. I think I'm going to wait for the next gen Amazon Echo to see if they do make it so I can have a few that work as one unit as you stated in your review. Thank you for a honest review!
+Jeppy Frost welcome jeppy, glad it helped, yeh i think it wouldn't work in a large house, except for a man cave or rec room or such. i wasn't lying about the title, ha.
Great Job! I just got mine and I love it. Can't wait to buy the hue lights so that I can use the lighting feature.
+Sandra Diaz awesome! will warn you the hue lights are addicting ha.
Great in depth review. Question, what speaker or something of that sort that would be great for playing primarily music from different sites? Even youtube. Very loud music.
very interested in getting one for the basic simple features as you do . do you know which lights are the simplest to link to it ? im not looking for multi color and really expensive ones just your basic on and off stuff . thanks in adavance and great job on this honest product review .
Great video. Thanks for the comprehensive review, Techfreshness!
you welcome!
I am getting one for Christmas, I can't wait!!!
sexisaweapon lewis Out of stock !
So it does what your phone does?
techfreshness good job on your tech review!!! thank you so much for your excellent and very honest opinion you are a very professional and smart guy i am a fan now of your channel
Hey wow!! At minute 8:40, we have the same Ikea lamp. The bulbs that came with the philips hue starting kit dont fit that lamp. Where did you get your light bulbs
Good honest review. Last year at this time, Amazon was sending out invitations for the Echo. If you were a Prime member and received an invitation, the purchase price was $99. The only downside to this was waiting 4+ months to receive the device. I was lucky and got mine in February. The Echo was one of the best purchases I made in 2015 hands down and it is used several times daily. Now if only she would say "you're welcome, when you say Thank you.
+Michael Carson ha very nice you got the early deal, i remember seeing the invite but didn't really understand the need at the time. i'm with you on the best purchase of the year too. funny you say that too because my girlfriend is always thanking her and i'm like wth, no need, she is our slave, lol
great video!!! Im planning on doing a review on the echo and the dot my self!!! def subscribing to your channel! keep up the good work!
Damn, you were right. That was the best review I've seen so far. Simplified and very clear. Great job.
ha thanks a lot mate!
Just fyi - I purchased one just based on your video. Have no regrets so far.
ha, thats awesome man thank you.
Great video.. My Echo will be arriving Monday. You have to tell me where you got the couch.. or at least who manufactured it? Props on the decor of your condo, man.
Great - thanks for that great demo.
Really nice review. Thanks.
hey mate, did you need the new square bridge for hue or dose it work with the original circle bridge?
really good review thanks
Great, practical review.
Great review! I'm actually considering buying this thing now :)
+Efrain Espinet :P dooooo it! ha
Awesome review! Thanks a bunch!
Will this work in addition to zwave switches
wonderful review of Amazon Alexa your speaking voice clear and demonstrations excellent..I've seen many reviews and some were good but yours...* * * * * 5 stars...good job
Donna
Great review... Thanks.
Thank you for making this video. Thanks to you I will wait a bit more to get and "Echo"
Good idea, look into the new Dot
This video lives up to it's title. Thanks for the straight dope dude
+Nathan Dean haha, thanks a lot nathan.
Question: I want to get an Amazon Echo but I really want to get surround sound for my room. Are the speakers in the echo good enough to not need additional speakers for a single room? If not, is it possible to connect Alexa to other speakers? Thanks!
You cannot add speakers to the Echo, you need the Dot. It has a 1/8" jack or can be paired by Bluetooth. It's available now for pre-order for $49 shipping in Oct 20.
Great review! Also, nice shirt (Go Braves)!
ha, thanks dr!
Thank you very much for your excellent review.
would I be able to turn off my Lights even if their just 100w bulbs?.
what bulbs are in your ikea lamp?
can you just connect it to your phones Bluetooth to listen to RUclips or music from my phone ?
yeap, sure can. it shows up just as a bluetooth speaker.
#Black Friday>>Certified Refurbished Amazon Echo, you SAVE $51>>www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00Y3QOH5G/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B00Y3QOH5G&linkCode=as2&tag=httpwwwechipk-20&linkId=f5fa9009c2b4ecdaf193345b4dda3ea7
Very very nice video. I found your video on my recommendations and I'm glad I did. You showed Echo in a way other reviewers don't, and my use case would be similar to yours, except that I don't have those fancy Hue lights... I should look into those.
Anyway, your condo looks nice and techy. I want mine to be like that too. What would be one gadget I can start with that can make the biggest difference? Are those wifi lights really all that?
I've subscribed to you. Keep up the good work.
+Jhon Pereda (JPere) hey jpere, glad you found me as well! thanks for the comments man. well i do love the hue lights, but they are very expensive, worth it but not without their quirks. you want one 'gadget' for your place to make it techy? are you a music lover? good speakers/sound are like my number 1 priority in any place i move to
Great review
Great review! Now I really want to buy one! Thanks 😉
+Nicolle Rodriguez welcome! :P
This is so helpful!
LOL! While playing video my Echo started to answer your request!
omg i want it!!! lol i never have to wait for the news anymore lol
Great review! Thanks.
Does your phone need to be bluetooth paired with it constantly?
Great video. Thanks man.
Good review! I picked up the echo for the same reasons you did when they had their black Friday $150 sale. I love the shopping list, timers, alarms and Phillips lights features. I use it all the time, and it is much more convenient than grabbing my phone to do those tasks.
I do wonder if they will ever integrate Spotify. Amazon may see it as a threat to their Prime music service and not want to offer it, but Amazon is pretty limited compared to Spotify.
+kme06d nice, i wish i got it on that sale. yeh good point about the spotify, ams lacks a lot of stuff and their desktop app is confusing as hell. i really wish you could set an alarm and have her say the specific reminder though, much needed feature imo
Where did you get your sofa with the ottoman? Possible link? And great video as well!
+Steve Savo thanks steve, its was from by bydesignfurniture.com not sure if they still make it though
Your review is spot on! Excellent job and nice to watch, you've a beautiful home too. I got one of the first Echos sold, have it in the kitchen, and love it. I create a shopping list, a separate "to-do" list, run my Harmony lights, play Prime music selections, set cooking timers, get date/time, news and weather updates daily. I would love it to run my Nest thermostat, TV, and door locks too.
+Kathryn Zusmanis hey kathryn, beautiful. that sounds like you are getting a lot of good use out of it! glad you like the video too appreciate the kind words
very comprehensive. thanks!
+Juan Macias yeh boyee. thank you
If you’re not interested in listening to music through the echo would the dot be a better option as it seems to to everything the full size version does?
yes, especially considering the price
What are your thoughts of the echo a year later? Do you use it more often now that it has direct compatibility with Nest, Ecobee, August and such?
hey good question. i still love it actually and very much miss it when i didnt' have it hooked up during my recent move. i have since added a nest but no other devices. i still use it often to make shopping lists, random timers and controlling lights. those are honestly the main things, but they are extremely helpful to me in my day to day.
so is this good to use as an alarm clock? or speaker to play around the house
most def
great job man
How does it turn on the lights? Some kind of special plugging? It can not be the regular wall connection right?
that is correct, you need a hue or other type of hub to have it be able to control lights.
nice job with the review
Thanks for the thorough review. I've been curious about this product for the longest time. I really don't think I'd use it enough to justify the expense, though. So I'm gonna pass on it for now. But if I someday automate a bunch of stuff in my house, then perhaps I'll take another look at the Echo to see if it's compatible. Also, it would be a big plus for me if it could connect to my iTunes natively.
hey greedo, do you mean itunes on your computer?
Wait I would have to upload my music to Amazon? Or would it work with my music on my phone?
How or where do you register the device? When trying to pair Alexa tells me my device is not registered... Help?
I love mine, n i agree w you. I think one of their biggest next steps should be interconnectivity w other echos, something along the lines of what Sonos does. Better n different speakers for different rooms that can also respond to commands. So that it feels more like Tony's Stark home assistant in the Iron Man movies. That omnipresence feeling it'd be quite something. Then I think it'd be a no brainer for anyone. All together I think home automation should be standardised, so that no matter which brand you buy it still plugs to your hub. In my case, I really like what Lifx is, no hub n their lights are interconnected. If they so happen to add plugs n switches to their line up, w this new update where the Lifx comes as a skill for the echo, I think it should be a pretty neat set up. Add to that voice controlling your entertainment set up, TV, home theater, DVDs, projectors n what not. Change channels, volume them up/down. Could be the best ever yet. The echos got a lot of potential, a lot. It's a shame that the app makes you feel like amazon doesn't really care, nor does it plan to make it better, or at least what it would be
Best review. thank you
Excellent review 👍🏻
+FlashForum thanks flash, appreciate it
so you would most likely not recommend this product for going to softball tournament i need a speaker that is loud enough to here for a good distant? if not whats a good speaker for just playing music??
well amazon echo is the mother of the amazon speaker meaning this is the main speaker that does voice commands and act as a bluetooth for that it must stay pluged in the wall not outside that doesnt have a plug. amazon is making some cheaper amazon speakers for different situations amazon Dot, and Amazon Tap. amazon dot is a small speaker that must be plugged in also(only does voice commend but i dout it plays music. The Amazon Tap is a Bluetooth speak where you can take it anywhere with you (no plug needed) in acts as a voice command and speaker like you need. but to get to your question the sound quality is okay in a small area but can get distorted when turned up max volume so you might want to invest in a amazon tap look it up. hope this information helps 👍
I use Alexa for my lights as well. Since this review she's had some updates and works with nest thermostat and adt pulse alarms. With Nest you can set the temperature and ask Alexa what the temp is in the room but you can't yet tell Alexa to cut it on or off. Amazon tells me their working on getting that into an update.
Alexa also now gets SiriusXM which sounds a lot better on the echo and show. You have to be a have SiriusXMs most expensive package for it to work on Alexa.
The fast response and low latency seems incredible
+Drew Peterson yeh, it is pretty impressive actually.
I have one question, does the light off/on thing have to be with Wemo or with all lights?
+Jordan Kertesz it can be with wemo, hue lights, or a bunch of other compatible type lights
Oddly as I was watching this video on the LOW volume Alexa still heard what I said and did it lol. She added toothpaste to my todo list too
Solid review sir.
+Scott Bitterman thank you sir
LOL I was watching this video in a room in my house and when my echo heard from this video "Alexa" she started to answer the question. That was cool.... Great video too!!
+Hector Rodriguez ha thats funny, yeh when i was editing the video i had to turn my echo off
perfect review
Great review. Best one out there.
+boboc50 appreciate that boboc
I do wish Amazon would make this product available outside of the US, I live in Australia and I'd buy one of these in a heartbeat if it was available.
Amazing, I waited a couple months for it to come back in stock. Shipping was fast, when I got her (Alexa) I felt like a child on Christmas day : ).
Right out of the box the set up was simple. One thing though... I'm from a Caribbean island Trinidad & Tobago.I set up a JetBox account, I give Amazon a Miami address, they ship product there, JetBox ships it overseas to me. So I'm limited a little bit : no app for my cell phone, no Pandora or rest of Premium audio stations, thank God I can still use Tune in & surprisingly Amazon Prime Music, can't buy songs though, can't access Prime Video either. I'm a regular customer on Amazon & with access to their Prime music it's enough for me to stay a Prime member now : )
Alexa works really well, I'm limited for now till next month to fully Automate & upgrade my home with lights, sensors, plugs... the works. For now She understands about 90% on the first try 5% on second, 3% have to rearrange my words, 2% nothing, I understand her about 99% of the time, sometimes she talks a little fast.
Her sound for her size is amazing. When I want the music loud I tell her to raise volume to 8, 10 would be overkill. Sometimes I forget where the music is coming from, I have a Bose sound system, of course no great base but you hear everything clearly. You can stay across the room & talk to her & she hears you clearly, but if music playing more than volume 6 she may not here you, I bought the remote separately, works great, so music can be loud & I just use remote.
On youtube They show a lot of easter eggs... things you can ask her & she responds in funny entertaining ways, maybe over 80 cool responses she gives you, then there are cool skills you can access (from amazon site & app as well) to further upgrade her, of course there are a few Quirks with some of the 'skills' & some useless ones, but a lot are unique & can entertain children & adults as well.
She plays music from my phone as well with no problem wish she could answer & make calls for me as well. She is well built, feels sturdy & sleek. Can't wait till I can use her to her Full potential : ) Customer care looks at your responses on the Amazon site, I gave a feedback that she didn't understand a question I know I asked clearly, they responded like 5 minutes with an e mail indicating they checked into it & that by refraising the question I'll get the desired response, I did & it worked, give those guys a raise of pay.
Europe to please
Alexa can't understand you guys from the land down under, just like non computer people from the states cannot understand you. haha. Jk.
Lachlant1984 I use mine in China. it works fine. It simply goes directly to Amazon cloud . you can use in Australia fine . I cannot just ask what time or the weather . I have to ask for the time and weather in my city..Example "Alexa, what in the weather in Beijing China ? It is no problem Any questions just ask. will check back tomorrow.
It's available now in Australia!
I just love how you yell »Alexa, stop!« and »No.«. I'm going to get one just for the lulz of doing that.
ha you must speak to it with authority, thats when it performs the best funnily enough
good review
do you need your app on your phone active whn you enter your home?
