Me: How do you move a vertex?
Everyone: ....
Me: You Grabbitt!
You make the internet a great place.
Hes, Hes he does
Lol the pun
just about four years later and the knowledge you've shared for free out of kindness is still teaching new people. I've tried to get into blender over the course of five or six years, and just couldn't wrap my head around it (even with the donuts). This is the farthest I've ever gone on the blender journey, and I feel like I'm actually learning rather than just following along. Thanks to you I can come home and spend my time doing something constructive. Thank you Grant, I don't plan on stopping!
We want texture uv mapping video of same knife. Everybody pls like comment so he could see it.
lol Grant sees all comments.
@@grayjackgaming1746 And favorites 99 percent of them. At this point, I'm beginning to wonder how much longer he'll be able to do that with the influx of subscribers and all the new videos he's publishing almost daily.
He usually does go into the texturing in a separate video too.
Yes I'd like to see how you specifically textured this. I'd guess stencil?
Hope you make the video
I think a texture follow up is really necessary at the hard surface level it's at. Texturing when dealing with complicated objects and edge loops (when the texturing is not procedural) is something that really needs to be covered off
Whenever you come to a point where it looks like there will be a triangle I always think... "well there is no other option than to just make a triangle"
me 10 seconds later... Grant is a wizard confirmed!
Gray Jack Gaming
Nothing’s impossible
triangles arent bad ngons are, all perfect quads are more for movies a lot of game ready models have tris
Sigh.. I just love you and all the effort you put into the community, so effortlessly. Thank you Grant!
Now that i'm finally early enough, I can tell you how much your tutorials help me. I'm trying everyday to become a good 3D artist, I must say that you are a nice teacher and most of all, Thanks.
Thanks :)
You commented this 1 year ago, how's your progress now?
@@lem3579 he's dead :(
This video was like a warm hug of an explanation, so nice and calm and informative! I would love to see the texturing as well as your take on doing the small indents on the blade
Oh wow, adding the textures will turn this stabber into a photo-realistic beauty. It would definitely be beneficial to see how you'd do it Grant! Gives me something to look forward to after finishing nodes 4 noobs.
I tried last night, Uv unwrapping was fine, i found some free PBR leather, wood and metal textures, but when i applied them, it all came out flat. :S Definitely need a follow up tut.
@@count23all I hear ya, Texturing is a whole different beast to handle.
You always find something interesting to teach, even on simple meshes. Thank you Grant!
I always find these videos so helpful, very clear and informative without being too detailed and cumbersome. I vote for showing the texturing!
Your channel is my favourite timepass these days :) I learn so many things everyday during lockdown. Keep it up please!
i just made the metal handle and i did a retopology and it felt great that im able to fix the shading issues at the curves.
You really helping me keep up the good work!! Maybe i can get myself outta the 9-5 jobs thanks to you.
Much love.
Man I love your videos. It never feels like 20 minutes or 30 minutes. Keep on keepin on brotha!
Love to see a texturing tutorial on this knife! Great work!
An elegant potpourri of modeling methodology. Nicely done, M8.
Thank you for uploading these tutorials in systematic way. I'm about to finish this series 😆. Your teaching methods are really good. Example e to extrude s to scale. By listening it everytime those hot keys get cemented in mind.
This was almost zen to watch. :) Thank you for sharing!
At last! An in-depth video showing how to model from vertices. Thanks.
Glad it was helpful!
you are one of the best instructor out there!. and yes! texture it plz.
Hey Grant Abitt, thanks for the tutorial, you are a good teacher
Great Tutorial! Thank u!
These sure are ramping up!
Just as with part 10, I followed your challenge to give it a go by myself, and I think I managed something pretty close.
In fact, now that I look closely at your model it seems I overshoot, since I made mine as closed to the photo as possible, including the 5 semi-circular holes in the blade and those fancy hooks on the hand guard (which I don't think I got 100% right, but I did manage something reasonably close).
Time to watch the video and see the better tricks I could have used :P
Great Guru, within an hour i was watching the well tutorial and this one, i learnt a few important tips like bringing an image, bend, applying matcap etc. you are wondeful.
Finally, a guide with a knife. i like it! :D
Thank you 😊
Super helpful and yeah, would like to see the texturing of this as well.
Bloody hell. I decided to give the notches on the blade a try with Ctrl Minus / boolean, and the amount of correction and loops I had to add so they could be well defined.
Mate you totally rock.
I really love your videos. Everytime I'm happy to see that notification on youtube
same here! :D
Very thankful for this one!
My pleasure!
Good tutorial!
Thanks mate. was having issues with the blade of my sword. this helped alots!
Grant, it may seems not much to you, but your videos keep me inspired to carry on. Thank you ever so much!
Thanks :)
I have grand plans of what I want to do with my Spaceship and other sci-fi designs but the huge holdup is texturing them and doing it well enough for my post production in Photoshop to be minimal - what I need is a workflow from Blender to Photoshop or something - so any texturing tutorial on this would be really helpful
Definitely want to have the texuturing tutorial!! I was trying to image paint on my knife but it just doesn't look realistic no matter how I adjust the metallic and roughness in the shader node at the end.
Большое спасибо за видео! 🙏😃
thanks for this free tutorial very useful
always a good work out👌
Your tutorial are so helpful to me... great work keep it up
Thanks!!!
No problem!
top content, thanks!
Your voice is so soothing. You sound like the Bob Ross of Blender. Makes it less stressful to follow along lol
Oh thank you!
@@grabbitt I really have been enjoying your videos and learning a lot from them. Thanks you for creating such valuable content for Blender beginners!
Sir, you rock!
You really saved my life by saying the shortcut for Merge in 2.83 or greater is M. I have 2.9 and I have been hitting Alt+M Every single time, surprised that the window doesn't pop up.
I was wondering the same, thanks!
Its Awesome 💜💜👍
It seems there is a pole with 3 edges coming out of it around the tip of the knife the whole time, and for me I just use your technique in part 8 to make every vertices have 4 edges, then I found it really easy to just bevel around to get sharp edges...don't know if this is a better solution but I'm really happy that I am able to apply what you have taught...really appreciate it!
I would love to see the texturing of it. Thank you for the video.
Nice one. I was a little disappointed when I finished it and found out that the texturing part is missing. I trust you to complete this one soon.
Wow extruding vertices would have safed me so much time trying to create complex shapes... At least i know about it now, thank you :D
You're welcome 😊
Wow this is really cool! Now I will make my Rambo knife :D
Hey Grant (or other knowledge commenters) What would be the best way to model a leather wrapping for the knives handle?
Any good resources anyone can share?
i don't get why views dropping down but anyway big thank you for such a great series i really began to understand edge flow theory, it's yet hard for me from time to time, but not incomprehensible like it was before
big thank you sir!
I read that interview with you in CG Cookie. How dare you use left-button click!! You betrayed the brotherhood!
I dont know if you know this but there is an adon wich lets you add a single vertex, its called ''extra objects''. Then you can add the vertex with Shift+A, add mesh, single vert. Thank you for the great tutorial.
It would be great, the video of the texturing.
how did you extroud verti.... 10:40 without going in z and y exis for knife blade and body
modeling this was extremely fun. Also, I think this was way easier than part 10
yeah tricky to get the levels right :)
Awesome tutorial need some character face modelling and rigging tutorials too please
Rigging, I don't remember, but check out the playlists, there's a playlist modeling a game character. It's the Friday livestream at present.
edit: then I scroll down through a couple more comments and see a link "Rigging a Low Poly Person | Blender 2.8 | Beginners"
Maybe I'm wrong. but to make quad instead of triangle, you can also try gg and connect some vertexes or you can subdivide one of the edges.
Hey man. I really appreciate the video here. It's getting me to think a bit differently about the sculpting process.
20 minutes is no big thing, man.
Thanks :)
Omg.. You said the knife was in the description and I stopped watching as soon as you said that and tried to model it by myself... What a mess ! I tried to model all the holes at the top of the knife too and when I came back to the video, with sweat dripping everywhere, you forgot the holes !! :O xD
Nice vid btw ^^
Is there a reason why the vertices did not connect at the sharp etch of the blade (the whole bottom part), but did so at the top?
at 6.40 i try to adapt the shap by G , it will create a hole in mess in some point,
hey, I don't find the edit slide on my sidebar can someone help me :3
thank you for the great tutorials, i got a questions tho, when you modelled the handle you used the mirror modifier to add thickness, but what if i used the solidify modifier, is there any difference?
Yes mirror is more precise around the edges
Hi @Grant Abbit, Thanks again for yet another great tutorial! A noob question: I see in many tutorials that to add a single vertex you start with a mesh and dissolve it. Why not just Ctrl-Right-click to create a new vertex?
not sure what you mean
@@grabbitt At the beginning of the tutorial you started with a single vertex, then extruded it along the path. To create a single vertex you started with a plane then dissolved it to a single vertex. I usually press Control and right-mouse click on an empty spot to create a single vertex. But I see in many places that they use your technique, so I just wondered if there is a reason behind it.
Sorry, my bad... You can not enter edit mode unless you start with some kind of object...
I really related to the last 2 minutes of this video
I had trouble with the initial outline, because it wouldn't extrude properly. I figured out that my viewport was not perfectly flat/square as I drew it, so the individual vertices were not all on the same axis.
Thanks Grantt, for the "holes" on the top do you just use booleans?
i would inset faces
Hi! Thanks for all of your efforts to teach us Blender! These videos are very helpful.
I was hoping you could help me out with this one - Any idea why do all my handle modifiers apply to my new cube object when I try to make a guard? I keep starting over and it always happens. I use Blender 2.83
Don't know about that one sorry
@@grabbitt Thats ok, I'm sure I'll figure it out eventually :D Thanks!
After doing the handle, how do you decide whether to start with a new shape for the finger guard, or just extrude the faces of the handle?
Copy the reference. If it's a new object make a new object
Wow, reeeally wish I had heard not to model the complicated bits on the blade before I paused it. Looks nice but probably took four times as long.
thats was helpful. thanks. i had a problem with the bevel at the end. when i bevel it the shape is getting very strange. i dont know why. anyway. and i wonder if at our models there are triangles is a big problem? not at this. i generally speak
and yes i would like to see texturing too :)
Thank you for this series, although I must say I'm kind of dissapointed with this tutorial, I spent over 30 minutes trying to model all those details and concave shapes cause I though you would model the entire blade...
Well at least it was fun, but definitely I need something more advanced. Any suggestions?
Great tutorials as always Grant, one question about the mirror I couldn't quite figure out even after fiddling around with it. My viewport and object orientation (looked at the xyz gizmo), origin and 3d cursor was pretty much identical to yours but when I used the mirror modifier I actually had to tick the Z axis for the same effect, the Y axis was giving me an upside down reflection of the mesh on the same spot and I couldn't figure out why.
Edit: Figured it out, had to do with the object transformations, after applying with ctrl + A it worked with Y mirroring.
@Voi_D That'll get ya' almost every time. Gotta' apply your Transforms (Location, Rotation and Scale) and you'll be all sorted.
I managed to model the notches on top of the knife and it looks great with no artifacts but the topology is quite bad (lots of triangles, poles and bad edge flow)... but it looks good. My question is how acceptable is bad topology in the industry even if the model looks good? Perhaps a good idea for a tutorial would be to give us a complex model that we all try and you can correct/comment on various versions of the model that we send you. This is the best series on blender modelling, love your work Grant!
bad topo is fine as long as it looks good and isn't showing up bad when animated
Hello! I noticed your position for the vertex (y) is -0 I was just wondering how you did this as when I lay down my vertices they do not follow the y axis. Thanks (:
You must be in side view
15:16 Hunting butter knife :D
and how do you trace?
Hi , grant , i'm trying to complete this playlist and until now it's really fantastic playlist (thank you so much) , and i'm trying to learn modelling for creating assets for my game , so do you think after completing this play list can i hand modelling gun or is still so far to create it? i know it depend from person to another but at least can i handle it or not?
you should be able to yes
@@grabbitt thank you so much i will try to even if it fail i try again ,(thanks for your response as always)
this is the voice that makes me go sleep
My biggest problem on making this are the blade. Took me a while to understand.. But i manage to make it as well. And yes i would like to see the texturing.
Can you do classes on retopology please. i find this subject rarely on youtube in blender. flippednormals did it but not in detail
eventually :)
so which better to keep the topology perfect and minimalist?
*mean crease* or *support loop*
because my tecaher said that too much vertex looks ugly he said
any help?
edit: i like using mean crease, but at the same time i'm scared if something goes wrong with the topology.
It's whatever your comfortable using and what's best for the output needed
Please do a texturing tutorial for it
Why we dont smooth the normals? It also smooths better than subdivision surface modifier
not used the smooth normals yet myself
If you NEED the texture paint tutorial earlier you can look at this one: ruclips.net/video/lmbAs9jE1vI/видео.html
But we still want Gabbitt to make an even better one c:
11:54 , Did the exact same thing and FILL doesnt work.
Right click - Fill : error ; '' no faces filled '' . I need to select 2 edges and Rclick 'new face from edges' one at the time. Maybe it has something to do with the "select 2 verticies then press F to fill" that i can't do using the industry compatible keymap. Any solutions ?
not sure what's happening here sorry
Does the "Mean Crease" parameter cause compatibility issues when exporting the model to other 3d editing software or engines? just looking for an excuse to use an extra edge loop instead. Mean Crease seems to be really powerful and easy to get used to, but I'm not sure if its the most versatile option when you work with different software. Great tutorial btw. 😊
No it's not compatible
I'm confused with the edge loop selection - I use alt+lmb, but it selects the entire loop instead of just the top, or bottom edge that you're modifying with g, g?
edge loops dont run through triangles
@@grabbitt I must have broke something along the way. I'll give it another try! Thanks!
What the they key for the picture adding thing?
not sure what you mean
@@grabbitt nvm i found it
how to lock the extrusion on z and x axes?
Press e then the axis you want
Excellent. I think you should make a car tutorial
yes i may just do that :)
Please do the texturing but also add those divets into the knife. ;)
I’m hella confused @ 13:50 I thought that face in the top of the blade was a triangle so how was he able to loop cut through it? Then he deleted the edge that I thought turned that top face into one big face with a small triangle at the tip. I’m completely lost. I struggle with topology. 😔
OMG Grant You genius I see it now! You added that vertex so that the top face is a quad my mind is blown
Normals....gets me every time....man
Hi grant would modelling the new ps5 controller be more tricky for a beginner?
@RealTimeX well... the console wont be out until winter holidays 2020, but 2 days ago the controller official pictures were released.
I think the PS4 is trickier. The PS5 design is more like the Xbox controller...
i'll take a look :)
@RealTimeX their controllers r being reviewed on youtube but not their consoles not yet
@@grabbitt thanks!
How do you introducing these small complicated details without adding to much topology?
You have to add a lot of topology there is no real way around it
But doesnt this mess up other parts of the model, the result is that I get a lot of topoly in place that dont need it. Is ther no way around is. I get like the general modeling flow but once I try something on my own I never achieve to add like small details. A good example is adding bolts, of course you can add them as seperate objects but sometimes you want you surface at that spot slightly indented. Is there ways of seperating you object in parts with less and more thight topology?
We are going a a more interesting territory for me, hopefully we may get a firearm modelling down the line.
Thanks as always
CG Cookie did a paid-for series on the M4 carbine many years ago. They've since released it on their RUclips channel. It has 15 chapters, each with a duration of 35-60 minutes each.
While it uses Blender 2.6, Jonathan Williamson uses application agnostic modeling techniques. You can use the series to model in any 3D program. Or any object, really.
@@coreys2686 I followed that one with a rather satisfying results but I would like to see more of that kind of thing from Teach here
Grant Abbitt, hi.
Before, the Ukulele Tutorial was very helpful.
But I re-created ukulele with blender 2.8.
It didn't work out.
It doesn't clean the hole in the body.
You'll know if you try it.
The 2.8 version of Subdivision surface is different from the 2.7 version.
Let me know if you have a solution.
ukulele? not sure what you mean. Subdiv from 2.8 to 2.79 should be the same
