  • Joel describes the discarded number from River of Dreams as "a dog. It was an art song called `The Winter Crossing' which I took out back and shot. It was really pretentious and stupid. " He played the doomed tune once for Danny Kortchmar and engineer Niko Bolas. "I'm watching Danny and Niko behind the console. I see their entire faces, and as the song goes along I see less of their faces. Now I only see up to their noses. Then, as I'm further into the song, I just see eyes -- very wide, open eyes. And I realize, as I'm singing it, that this really is a piece of - - - . And I stopped and I said, OK. I'm sorry. And that was it. "

This song should not have been written off. It brings everything full circle back to Cold Spring Harbor. Imagine Billy Joel circa 1971 singing this song. If Danny Kortchmar had any clue about Billy Joel's artistry he would have seen the potential and encouraged further development of this song. I doubt Phil Ramone would have made the same call to exclude it from the album.

Danny Kortchmar and Nicolo Bolas are clearly tone deaf and insane. This is musically very clever and very beautiful to listen to. ARGH. I hope he comes back to it one day.

This song had so much potential, Lord have mercy! My friend was a close friend of Danny's. Danny, what were you thinking, this song is way cool! Anyhoo, almost sounds like Sting singing and of course I know Billy is friends with him. C'est la vie!

LYRICS: When I was just a boy I dreamt
    I'd run away to sea
And sign aboard some merchant ship
    And sail across the ocean
    When I became a man I put
    My childhood things away
And gave up all the dreams I had
    Of sailing on the ocean
    So long, so long
I wave goodbye to my old friend the sea
It's winter time and you know
I'm not what I used to be
Sometimes I feel so far away
From all the ones I love
The storms that raged along this coast
    Keep every ship from sailing
    And who would brave
A voyage in the January gale
The boy who ran away to sea
    Can make a winter crossing
    Come on, come on
    He cried, come with me
    To the other shore
But I've been gone too long to make
    The crossing anymore

Sounds a bit like a Macca song called "Winter's Rose" not all that bad, maybe the middle eight needs to be brushed up a bit....but would not call the tune awful, by any means.

It's in the theme and character of Stong. Just needs work, and it could be a masterpiece.

If produced properly, this could have been something. At the least, it's a Sting/Martin Page type of ballad which may have done better in their hands.
