      @@namenotfound8747 lol. In fairness, I TRIED to like it. But first of all, I'm not much of a reader, at least where most fiction is concerned. So I never got into the books during middle school or high school like a lot of people my age.
      The movies were good, but there was so much time between them (understandably so) that I just stopped caring after the second one. To this day I've seen all of maybe 10 minutes of Return of the King as it played onscreen while i was flipping through channels.
      Finally, and this is going to sound strange since I play Magic, I'm not all that into the whole fantasy thing. I used to love it. I played AD&D in high school, I read a decent number of Dragon Lance and Forgotten Realms novels, I loved Zelda games back then. But somewhere along the line, fantasy and pretty much all of its derivatives just started to bore me to tears. They all felt so same-y, with a fee small changes here or there. The most Game of Thrones that I've watched is when my daughter wanted to show me the Mountain/Viper fight.
      Honestly, if Magic changed its entire setting to a futuristic or sci-fi theme tomorrow, I'd love it.

      Let's not pretend it wasn't always a gatchya game in its fashion. You could work around it easier by purchasing singles, or using proxies, but you were still working around the original system to some extent.

    • @Xoulrath_
      @Xoulrath_ Год назад +9

      @@ryanjones_rheios not even close, man. Not even close. I started in 97. I played Extended (aka Modern now basically). I bout duals for $10-$15 a pop with ease and regularity and my lgs. I had Type 1 and Type 1.5 decks (Vintage and Legacy) that cost a couple hundred bucks, sans the Power 9 (Moxes were already $100 each by then, Lotus was $200+). So no, it wasn't so godawful, gotta have all the latest greatest cards to win game since its inception.
      Sure, the duals were necessary, but that was always the case simply because of how Magic was designed. Outside of that, cards like Swords to Plowshares and Lightning Bolt were cheap. Cards like Serra Angel (an actual tournament staple back then) could be had for a few bucks as well. The majority of cards, save lands, were not double digit in price.
      You could crack a box, make some trades, buy the lands that you needed, and have a genuinely competitive deck for a couple hundred. Again, the majority of that cost being duals.
      Now we have a situation where you either play the new cards or lose. The only other real option is to spend hours of time, scouring Scryfall, for other cards that could be options at a better price point, and just make an anti-meta deck on a budget. That's work in and of itself, and I say that as someone who does exactly so.
      Wizards screwed up when they decided that it was OK to charge us twice as much for MH packs. The players screwed up when we allowed it to succeed. At this point, I'm pretty sure that Wizards only cares about Commander, and is trying to turn every new offering into nothing but Commander. It allows them to just print money. They've stopped caring about the actual game.

    • @ryanjones_rheios
      @ryanjones_rheios Год назад +4

      @@Xoulrath_ I mean its certainly gotten worse but every collectable card game has its bones in gambling (both mechanically in regards to the deck and by its economic plan). The goal of WoTC was always to have people buying packs to try and crack the dream cards like Mox. The card game was the bait and they had to make it affordable at onset or nobody'd have wanted the chase cards. Over time they've had a larger and larger player base and less and less reason to maintain the bait themselves.
      But I could just being overly pessimistic. My negativity over everything WoTC's been pulling since at least 4e D&D, and honestly sooner though I ignored it, has sortof backwashed over everything they've done for me. I don't see goodwill or passion in it, just manipulation and purely pragmatic deals (Garfield making Magic to get his real pet project funded.)

    As a strictly commander player I (Jim) was really underwhelmed with what was announced for Magic 30. It seems like an event aimed at Magic generalists, but if you don't draft, don't care about UN-sets, and don't see Maro or Richard Garfield as reasons to go, it's just paying a lot of money to go to a busier CommandFest. Given that it falls on Halloween weekend, the cheapest hotel nearby the con on the North end of the strip was going to be $1550CAD for the weekend, plus 475 for a flight and another 450 for access to the command zone.
    I don't think CommandFests provide good value for the cost of entry, but Richmond cost me $1000 less and isn't materially different from Magic 30 when it comes to the things I care about.

  • @LowBatteries68
    @LowBatteries68 Год назад +5

    I don't think I'd have any actual issue with the pricing if they had an option for a day pass/weekend pass that did not include the random packs. For instance, if the day pass didn't have the mystery booster pack and the DOM collector booster and was priced at $30 or if the weekend followed the same and was priced at $80. That falls in line a lot closer to other convention as far as I know and is much more affordable if you only want to go for the panels + artists, etc. You also now have ~$30-80 that can go towards drafts/events at the event itself

    • @Toasty25000
      @Toasty25000 Год назад

      Yeah, but not including those packs wouldn't save WotC money, it's just a free carrot for them to get you to buy the expensive packages. I don't like it either.

    A note about masks... N95 *or better* helps. I got P100 at a hardware store. 3M makes the filters, and they keep paint fumes out. It's still not perfect, and you can't take it off inside the contaminated area to get a drink. There is a company making a valve you can install in disposables to allow a straw, and it re-seals. (Cue Mass Effect's Tali, "Emergency induction port")
    I do hear good things about upper-room UV with a ceiling fan, but REALLY need more data about rooms with LOTS of people. But... ugh, airline air, so far, seems like the WORST part of the equation. Like, all these flights being cancelled because the flight crews are out sick! That's an unsafe work environment...
    Covid gives me brain fog, and it does brain damage. I can't afford to lose anything upstairs, life's hard enough as it is. Sorry if I'm a bit ramble-y. I just... really don't want my twilight years going how my gran's went. One forgot the world, the other forgot how to be kind.

In how many other communities do you get so much push-back for criticizing something that is obviously terrible? When you state the truth that a crappy thing is crappy, you shouldn't have to assuage so many people by having to remind them that they can still enjoy that thing if they really want to and have to say that you're not "yucking" anyone's "yum" just because there are _that_ many people who are so addicted to it that they cannot bring themselves to stop supporting something that is sub-par, let alone criticize any single part of it.
