    Prof, I think you were too kind on the manabase with painbow. Yes it's an improvement over ur-dragon but the gap between this and even a budget 5 color EDH Mana base is huge. No reason enemy pain lands (or ally but apparently that's too expensive for wotc to reprint) and/or filter lands or heck even a cycle of kaldheim snow duals (same synergy as tango lands with slow fetches) could have been included instead of so many basics. And keep in mind this is a very pip intensive deck with a proper wubrg commander that costs wubrg and a bunch of high costed multicolor legendaries. I have a feeling there's gonna be a lot of players unhappy with this out of the box and basically bricking each turn and not having enough pips to get out all their stuff.

      I mean... there IS one reason, though the validity of it is debatable: that gold expansion symbol. New players aren't likely to be excited by a deck where all the rares are lands, unless in the future we get a sweet "Oops, All Lands" commander. 5+ rare, mana fixing lands is already WAY above curve for what they usually do, and it works well with the budget common and uncommon lands. Maybe adding the common fetches from New Capenna wouldn't have been the worst idea though... A slow mana base is better than one that doesn't work at all.

    • @MalteLewandowski
      @MalteLewandowski Год назад +2

      I see were you are coming from, but personally I have no problem being a bit slower in a 5c deck. I have the advantage of having access to all colors in return. Also, in some playgroups it is even not as good, to be hyper efficient in the beginning as you can be seen as the main thread very fast. I totally get the point of a perfect mana base in an 1:1 environment, but in multiplayer, a lot of different things count, like politics, threat assesment and in general having 3 opponents.
      Usually, in my playgroups, if a player is a bit slower (e.g. he missed some land drops or something like that), he will not get targeted that much, as other players are seen as the threat. Also I am an advocate of playing more board wipes in such a deck, as they can catch you back up.
      Overall, I feel that optimized mana bases are not as important as peope think they are in commander (besides very competitive playgroups and cedh of course).

    Funfact I bought painbow and before modifying it I played about 4 games with it. Other decks were made by other players I don't remember whole deck setup but two of them were creature based win decks and last one was a combo deck. I won two of those games by simply using Jared's 1st and second ability and other 5c creatures especially two-headed hellkite and maelstrom angel. I used single removals to get rid of problematic creatures or permanents. It was usually like this. Put krosan verge on 2nd turn (both my wins happened this way) crack it at third turn. Put Jared on 4th turn put a kavu as blocker. At 5th turn I often had 6 mana so I played two headed hellkite pump it with Jared's -3 along with kavu suddenly a flying meance 10/10 attacks someone I draw two cards. Someone killed the hellkite? get it back with Jared's ulti rinse and repeat. Other cards kept people in check long enough for me to kill everyone with Maelstrom Angel or two-headed hellkite. Iridian maelstrom and time wipe let me kept my biggest creature on board and getting it bigger while cleaning everyone else's board. After modifying the deck I might even lowered its efficiency honestly I might be just keep it as is only to replace the lands with triones and new capenna ones.

    My recommendation for a slight mana base upgrade (still budget though) if you want to run less tap lands is to run the 5 panoramas and 5 odyssey filter lands and take out the tri lands. The panoramas and slow fetches are both great stand ins for budget players to replace with true fetch lands when they are ready and shocklands for the tango lands and odyssey filters. These 20 cards (panoramas, slow fetches, tango lands and odyssey lands) have been my go to budget mana base for 5 color decks for a couple years now and are a nice balance between fixing and tempo before upgrading to true fetches and shocks

    Painbow's better once you make some you tweeks to it. I added Child of Alara, Esika, and made Jodah the Unifier my commander for starters (while keeping Jared in the deck). I removed the two Ikoria mutation legends since their addition was really odd and also added Jegantha, the Wellspring as a companion by removing Time Wipe and added the Legacy Weapon as well. I also added the World Tree and the NC triomes. I did make some more modifications, but I can't remember off the top of my head and the deck's at home, but the deck is a lot of fun once you make your own tweaks to it (as is the norm with these precons).

      Dihada's deck can be crazy if upgraded too. Putting Underworld Breach, some tutors and flicker results in a competently powerful breach deck.

    • @CKarasu13
      @CKarasu13 Год назад

      @@SammySlamma92 you don't need demonic tutor. Sidisi works. There's also profane tutor. You only need to find a way to get Underworld Breach into your hand, and flicker to hand or grave(unmarked grave does this, as does milling it off of dihada).
      You can still make powerful deck with some affordable upgrades.

    The new decks cost 5 dollars more than all the other decks do. Over here all the pre-cons had a fixed price at approximately 55 dollars.
    Remember when you'd get one 60-dollar game for your birthday or Christmas? Maybe even two?
    Now we're bombarded with product that is super tempting to buy, at least every other month. I guess I shouldn't complain that they're doing their job well. I want the cards!
    It's just annoying that it's so expensive. Along with food and power getting more expensive (no politics; that's just a fact), it sours the mood a little to see the already luxury product getting just a little bit more expensive as well.
    The best solution is to buy singles when necessary. If they print a whole deck and I want enough cards from it, then whatever. I just wish they'd cut the price of the decks in half. I bet they'd still make a huge profit. Sadly a huge profit isn't enough. It's gotta be the _biggest_ .
    I'm sorry I'm complaining so much. It's a neat game, and I'm having fun playing it still! It's just... like the Prof said; "it is okay to love something, but still be critical of it".
    Also, they can technically ask any price they want. It is completely within my power to not buy... or to buy. I just wish I could have my cake and eat it too. In fact, what saddens me is that it hasn't always been like that; we've had less expensive commander decks in the past.
    Thanks for the vid, Prof!

    I like Jensen better as the commander in the Painbow deck. Easier to keep on the field and there are 10 all color spells that can trigger the Serra effect. Nearly forgot to add...the two mutate creatures would be the first two I'd replace. Throw in Garth One-Eye, Maelstrom Archangel, Esika, Najeela, etc. there are a lot of creatures that could work very well.

    I have a multi color draft cube and I've been using slow fetches and tangos with signets for fixing. It works great.

  • @cosmicprison9819
    @cosmicprison9819 Год назад

    I actually found the slow-fetch + tango land combination to work less optimally than for the Ur-Dragon deck. It looked nicer on paper, but worked out worse in practice. That's because the tango lands enter tapped more frequently than in a three-colour deck, given the low count of basic lands in Painbow. And since the fetchland already enters tapped, you still end up with two tapped lands for two turns in a row. It looks like a mimic of fetchland + shockland, but it doesn't work in practice. I'd rather have lands in there that tap for all colours, even if they're as slow as Rupture Spire / Transguild Promenade / Gateway Plaza / Archway Commons, as well as Path of Ancestry. They also could have reprinted Reflecting Pool, City of Brass, and/or Mana Confluence, instead of stuffing all the Mirage fetchies + already over-printed tango lands in here.

    Great as always. I specifically enjoy your focus on mana bases in precons, and am likewise awed that Wizards finally printed a good one.
    I do wish you would add a caveat to your financial section when doing day 1 analyses of precons. The price of precon exclusive new cards is always inflated during the presale and first weekend period. The fact that most of the cards of value from both decks are the new precon exclusives means the decks will lose a significant amount of value in the coming weeks. These cards that are over ten dollars on presale and day 1 are very likely to drop by half or more in just a week or two unless they turn out to be completely busted.
    Basically what I'm saying is that someone could order a deck based on your breakdown, thinking they're getting a handful of 10+ dollar cards, but those cards could easily be only 2-3 dollars each by the time the deck arrives.

    I would like to point out that the cost of these precons on MtGO is 29.99, which in conjunction with the fact they sold the Commander Legends and Kaldheim precons from late 2020/early 2021 for 19.99 suggests 29.99 as an MSRP. Of course, without an official MSRP, well...
