So much praise & love for the editors; fantastic work with that intro!😂 As much as it raises the blood pressure of so many magic players, when a new secret lair (alert) comes out, it's always fun to see what Prof does, and rather than checking the email/website, seeing what the secret lairs themselves will be on here. Oh, and congrats to D&D for 50 years! Crazy to think it's been around that long, but i'm only 28.
To the Prof and the writers and editors and all the staff at Tolarian Community College- I love all the work you do. In my opinion, this is the best MTG channel. I'm thankful for the honest reviews and mtg news that isn't skewed so as to not step on WoTC's toes. You are an excellent voice for the MTG community. Thank you all.
I bought my first secret lair with this drop. Karlachs rage seemed like a must when Karlach/Raised by giants is my first built from scratch commander deck and one of my favourites to play! I cant wait for it to arrive in the mail!
Same here. I think Prof might be underestimating the popularity of BG3 and the effects it had on this set. Most of my friends that bought it did so with the mind set of collecting and not card value or card power. I’m stoked either way.
I bought my first - and probably only - SL: An Exhibition of Adventure. Faithless Looting and Goldspan Dragon card art: chef's kiss I do not like and do not play TTRPG D&D, but am a sucker for the old school art
You can tell Prof actually plays Baldur's Gate 3, because at 11:01, when he shows the cards of the origin characters that "got cool new art, and maybe next time" as 'fan favorites'. He left out Gale...😂
@@tysnow9524 have you seen the secret lair dark ritual? Foil is $80. yeah its a 50 cent card. Trust me the foil DMG faithless looting is going to be worth the drop alone.
The limited availability leads to a lot of people not able to buy it. I would have loved to grab the Astation one for myself and the Karlach one for my wife. However, I couldn't step away from my job to drop money in a limited time window before it sold out. Naturally, once I got home from work they were sold out. WotC's newer way of doing Secret Lair not print to order is causing them to lose out on lots of money from customers working day jobs to earn the money to spend on the hobby.
Just buy it secondary there's always someone looking for a quick 10%, you can't pay five or ten extra dollars for it? You're already paying out the ass for worthless cards. I can't understand Magic players.
I ordered the Karlach set because I just got Baldur’s Gate 3 and she’s my favorite party member. Not to mention I already had a Karlach deck that was using some of those cards so now I can add some cool art to the deck.
I grabbed the foil pack with all the various D&D book art. I grabbed it as a collectors item, not to play, which I never thought I would say. The artwork and packaging was worth it to me. Thanks for analysis!
Sorry, I am not up to speed. Does Karlach see more play in Europe? I mean Karlach is Karlach and Karlach is awesome, but I thought she would be loved everywhere.
I wouldn’t say it almost instantly sold out. The bundles were available for a while and the individual ones (except Karlach and Astarion, those took a little bit to sell out) are still up.
I bought the Monster Manual versions because I appreciate the art from Dungeons and Dragons and is the only reason why I bought them. They are art pieces at the end of the day and won’t be used unless necessary
Got on the site an hour beforehand to be safe, had my order for the foil bundle in within 7 minutes of release 🎉 Went back and ended up getting the non foil later on. Some drops are still left.
Thank you for not skipping out on the already sold out SLDs. It's still nice to know how much they're worth and the grade you give them, even if they're unavailable.
I have a Karlach EDH deck, and it's a lot of fun to play. I use the Inspiring Leader background and lots of Boros on attack triggers. I was happy to order her secret lair for the combination of great art and cool cards
really happy with the xanathar drop, all playable in the same commander deck, all perfectly on theme, amazing art, and while the value isn’t outstanding it at least matches the cards. I already had a xanathar deck planned but this seals the deal
Amazing video, like always. I was able to made in time and got the 2 Beholder themed packs in foil. I'm happy with it, and I hope I can build a deck around Xanathar. But I'm still disappointed that WotC didn't reviewed their sale process for SL. I also wanted to get the Astarion pack, but it was sold out by the time I reached to the payment step... an hour and 20 mins after the release! Now, if I want those cards, I need to pay an absurd amount of money to greedy speculators.
I want to watch this video, but I am super pessimistic. The ones I wanted sold out before I could get to them yesterday. The question I'm asking is - is it worth it to even think about Secret Lair if it continues to require time off from work? This magic product is for someone else.
I work from home so that's how I was able to purchases the SLD drops. For this D&D drop yesterday, soon as the sale went live at 9am PST, within the first minute I refreshed the browser to join the queue and the estimated wait time was "over an hour". Crazy how these drops are getting
Ended up grabbing Exhibition of adventure, since it was still available when i got to the site. The art is highly nostalgic for me and ive got decks where each card will see play.
My first deck I built was Astarion, I even have my commander signed by Neil and I couldn't have been happier to have this set. All five will be in my deck even if mortify isn't the highest value. I am 100% in team worth it for the art.
See now Prof, now you have a problem on your hands. You and your editors went and did the best intro I've seen on this channel, and I dont know how you can top this.
Karlach is exceptional as a commander. If you get her through with some buffs its easy to just win. Cultist of the absolute is an amazing background for her
You can say that about literally any creature that you put things on. Multan and Yargle is so exceptional as a commander because if you put some buffs on him and they don't block you _just win_ bro he's SO INCREDIBLY POWERFUL
Ace-re-rock, like how you pronounced it, is one of the accepted pronunciations. I think the more common one that I'm used to sounds like Uh-sair-ruh-rack.
This will probably go to ver looked but I can’t think of a better channel to spread this message on. I just got my DnD secret lairs in the mail. Since I ordered four the individual envelopes came in one sealed box. Upon opening the box I saw my Karlach’s Rage rainbow foil edition envelope was opened and the cards were gone. None of the other three were opened just that one and I believe it’s cause it was worth the most money. This had to have happened at the shipping facility or maybe even on the line somewhere. I hope you see this prof you’re the guy to go to when our voices need hearing.
I didn't want the Karlach or Astarion ones but got the Dimir beholder and the dungeon guide ones. By the time I'd been in the queue for an hour (from a minute after them going live) the Astarion one had 'Technical Difficulties' and the Karlach one was sold out.
Your video intro is just awesome! Got 2 foil drops of Karlach. They are all cards I use in my deck, and man that Dolmen Gate is wow! I would really have loved to have a drop with Laezel and Shadowheart however (as I don't really like Astarion personally, I didn't buy it). Maybe next time!
What's cracked is that they had full availability with no waiting on the D&D Beyond website (which actually sold physical cards, despite what was implied), to the point where people were still able to buy foil copies of the Karlach and Astarion sets at two hours after the SL launched. The only reason anyone even knew about that as an option was because I had to create a thread on the Magic subreddit after someone mentioned it
Honestly, I'd go wild for a second set based around BG3, not just for a new shot at all the party members now that they're personalities and designs are finalized, but also for all the characters that just didn't make it in. A commander deck set could also be fascinating if they had a way to give everyone a good showing throughout the decks. Raphael is the *only* villain from the game with a card in MTG, and honestly he's more a generic devil typal commander rather than representing the cunning schemer we know and loath. Ketheric, Gortash, Orin, The Absolute itself, a dozen of sidequest antagonists and protagonists, hell, Dark Urge could (and should) have a card!
The Karlach and Astarion secret lairs are sold out now. But they fortunately anticipated greater demand for this product than the Monty Python secret lair and most everyone I know who *really* wanted these secret lairs got them.
Prof. Myrkul comes in with a new secret lair alert! :D Yeah, this video came out 13 hours ago... 23 hours ago I was looking at the mystery box 2 being sold out. I don't know if European secret lairs are different from American, but we'll, I simply didn't get one because it sold out too early again. :(
Those would've been great things to pick up. Unfortunately wizards seem to refuse to actually send me a notification mail even though I had put my it down multiple times cause there were some Secret Lairs that I was interested in (spoilers, all of them were sold out when I found out that they were up for grabs). Secret Lair has evolved from a fun product to one that just keeps me frustrated and I try to interact with it as little as possible. Not that I'd get to pick anything up when I'm actually interested in something.
Great, Last time i was on the secret lair page it wasn't shown when the release will happen. Now I see that everything I wanted is already sold out. Nice.
This will be my first Secret Lair. Half of the set was sold out by the time I got online, but I got the 3 D&D sets (non Baulders Gate). As a long-time D&D player, these cards make me happy, and that's all I care about ;P
I picked up the Karlach set because it had a couple cards I was already interested in buying as singles (Dolmen Gate and City on Fire), I could likely find a home in my Commander decks for all of the cards, and I only had one of them already (Thrill of Possibility, the cheapest one). If it wasn't for the fact I was going to buy some of them regardless I would've skipped but since I was, might as well get this version for about the same price!
1:54 did they print enough that it's still available, or is it still available because people aren't buying it as expected due to product burnout and/or in protest that an entire set is on secret lair only?
Got Astarion and Karlach just because I loved Baldur's Gate so much. Wish they also had Lea'zel. Luckily had that time during the drop free and also an hour wait to even checkout
Another secret lair i didn't get an alert for, but i got to go online and look at it when i got home from work. And Karlach and Astarion were sold out.
I wasn't even gonna bother with these DnD cards, but now that not all of them sold out on Day 1, Im actually getting the Exhibition of Adventure in foil. I love this more classic art, even if I dont think I'll be using many of the cards xd
The best way to say for the bakdurs gate 3 characters is that at the time, people did not know who these characters were. I will say legitimately just make a secidn run of the set, with a new set of rpecons built around party members of bakdurs gate 3.
More important is Why are the D&D characters not properly classes to worn with the D&D party deck (which requires warrior rogue wizard cleric). Meanwhile druids, barbarians, knights, etc can’t even function in the deck
Well Astarion is a Rogue so that works, but D&D has a lot more classes than what the party system allows for. Karlach is quite literally a Barbarian in game and lore. I do understand the frustration however, I'd much more prefer if they simply expanded what constituted a party and simply added the addendum that it can only count up to 5.
I mean, first of all, Party wasn't designed as a DnD mechanic, even if it was in the set right before the DnD set (to the point where they had to come out and say Party wouldn't be in it). Secondly, are you saying every single DnD character needs to be one of those four types because of this failed shitty mechanic no one likes? If she's a barbarian she should be Creature - Barbarian, who still gives a shit about Party

That Astarion card looks zesty, how fitting of his character. And knowing that everyone loves Karlach, I can see it selling like hot cakes.

I wasn't even gonna bother with these DnD cards, but now that not all of them sold out on Day 1, Im actually getting the Exhibition of Adventure in foil. I love this more classic art, even if I dont think I'll be using many of the cards xd
how exactly prof does a NEW SECRET LAIR ALERT for every new reveal stays entertaining
Nice intro prof!
The best way to say for the bakdurs gate 3 characters is that at the time, people did not know who these characters were. I will say legitimately just make a secidn run of the set, with a new set of rpecons built around party members of bakdurs gate 3.
Thanks for this.
More important is Why are the D&D characters not properly classes to worn with the D&D party deck (which requires warrior rogue wizard cleric). Meanwhile druids, barbarians, knights, etc can’t even function in the deck
WOTC strikes again.
