- You rarely hear people talking about Eddie Van Halen's brilliant piano playing. This is one of my favorite ballads we wrote for 5150. In 1993, Neil Young invited me back to do another Bridge benefit and I brought Eddie. It was so special and unusual. We had never done anything like this. Please enjoy this treasure.

Phil Norman ... I wish I could have the pleasure of finding out. I've been a Hagar fan since before he joined Van Halen. I can't say Montrose, I am familiar with the band but I'm not old enough to be a fan while he was in it.
Sammy’s range is unreal. This live version is everything with Eddie doing his thing on piano. Pure talent between the both of them.

Well stated and bringing tears! Eddie was one of many music heroes whom I got to meet on several occasions, and I got to tell them all sincerely how much they enrich my life!

@Sammy Hagar Hard not to give this performance a lot of love. Dude, your singing is so strong and Ed’s beating the piano into submission, but with beautiful sound coming out of it. My dad was a professional and ended his career on keyboards - he would have loved this.

You can really hear Ed's talent as a musician, its not easy to carry that tune on piano and make it sound interesting.
His rhythm is just incredible.
There's people that play different instruments and people that play an instrument great and great musicians and Ed was all three.
The piano/keyboards was one of Ed's great loves and what he was originally trained on before he ever picked up a guitar. All the great keyboard and synth melodies of the band were Ed's doing and they are as recognizable as anything he did on the 6-string. He had a knack for great jungles, chord progressions, and fills on the keyboard. When you hear just 1-2 notes you instantly know is a Van Halen song.
Ed’s hitting those keys like he’s playing drums. Phenomenal. And Sammy’s killin ‘ it on the mic.
I love this song and Sammy's voice! No auto tune. Just a piano and their voices! AMAZING!!
You can really appreciate Sammy's voice here. No distractions.
Eddie Van Halen was by far one of the most talented musicians I've ever had the pleasure of hearing live in concert.
Let's not forget that Eddie also played the drums and guitar!! He was a virtuoso!! 🎶 So so talented!! He is missed but we were lucky to have him. 😍
And all keyboards, ukulele, everything with strings I think lol, and the cello! He said he relaxed playing cello

We can mourn Eddies loss, or we can celebrate his music, or we can do both. I, too, was a pimple faced, skinny teen punk in ‘78 when Van Halen I was released and never in my wildest dreams did I think that one band, one guitarist, would have the impact on me the way Van Halen did. I built my bedroom into a shrine in respect and love for Van Halen.
My son texted me at work on the day it was publicly released that Eddie had passed. What a monstrous gut punch that was and still is; his passing was, as others have said here, like losing your best friend or favorite sibling.
Thanks EVH for everything. The music world will never have another like you.

The piano was the first instrument the Van Halen brothers learned. Their father was a musician, so that ability is in their genes.

The VH brothers were classically trained at the insistence of their mother, and later Eddie started on drums with Alex on guitar, then they switched, but l had no idea how good Eddie became at playing and writing on the piano.

@@johnkramer7161 Well, not entirely true. Eddie took piano lessons, and be took a class on theory in Jr. College. But he could not sight read music . He quit piano after a few years, but to say he was "Classically Trained" pianist is wrong. If he were classically trained, his lessons would have gone on for many years and he would be able to sight read music. His father was a Classically trained clarinetist though. But he is obviously a good player. But you are incorrect here. His instructor may have been a classically trained instructor though.

I wish Eddie knew to what magnitude he affected kids with his music. He was my whole childhood. When he died I felt like I lost a best friend that I never met.

Classically trained, but he couldn’t read music. He won a number of awards for his piano playing when he was a kid. He was destined to make his mark in the music world, and he most certainly did. 🙂
@@ladybuggs11 I remember Eddie saying he couldn't read sheet music and just "played by ear", repeating what his teacher would do, but given that he came from a musical family and he took college level music courses, I've always found it a little hard to swallow.
@@TheJohnnyCotts FWIW, all of the piano songs in the VH library are in Cmaj/Amin because he admitted he had to transpose everything he learned to C because he only uses the white keys. Lol
I love Van Halen but I don't tend to read up on every detail of artists so all I've ever heard about Eddie Van Halen is how great a guitarist he was,which is true, and not that he could also play piano 🎹, This is a beautiful song and personally I think that most accustic guitar versions of songs that are usually electric guitar led lose a bit in translation but this version of "Love Walks In" is as good even though it's a piano version with NO guitars.

Eddie was never a singer. He even said himself that he wasn't great with words, so he would talk using his skill. I always admired that. He let his skill do the talking. He was humble and calm, which made him a great father and an all-around good guy. He has been and always will be missed. I hate to see you only in Dreams now, Eddie.
Eddie actually had a very good voice when he was in his 20's.

When you’ve been in the Studio as much as Eddie, it’s impossible to play any instrument without having a built-in metronome playing in the back of your mind.

I love the mistakes!! Makes these Gods human. But boy, in between the few mistakes is soooo sweet. I saw Sammy open for a band before VH, and i yelled, WHO is that??? Man, the perfect rock voice! And Eddie had so many talents beyond his magic guitar.

wow, this is a phenomenal video. Talk about putting yourself out there to sing this song with only keyboards behind? Nobody seems to do this stuff anymore.... all track vocals. Sammy started his career when I was like..... 3 years old, so his early stuff was a little before my day. By the time Sammy joined Van Halen, I was a huge fan and continue to be to this day. We went to his beach bash in Huntington beach, and though they were overwhelmed by the turnout(ran out of food, booze, gates opened hours late) it was still so much damn fun. I have been listening to Sammy's "The Essential Red Collection," during my workouts for the past few months. Just love his music and the man. I blew it a few years ago and was selected for his birthday bash but we couldnt go. Hopefully we get a second chance. Love ya Sammy!

As much as i love original VH, this music was magic beyond magic....
A lot of people disagree with me, but I have always thought, and still do believe, that Van Halen was the absolute best with You and Eddie Sammy. I liked Van Halen with Dave, but you being in the band brought Van Halen to a whole other level. And as much as Dave fans scream otherwise, Record Sales prove it. It's too bad that it didn't keep going on with Van/ Hagar because there was still so much to be able to do. Unfortunately....it will never be again. I give it to Wolfie for addressing that Van Halen is done now. It's very honorable of him to keep Van Halen what it was. Thanks for sharing this with us Sammy.
Thank You Sammy for continuing onwards with Chicken Foot and Full Circle. Mostly, though, Thank You for burying the Axe, (in this case an actual guitar), with Eddie, and both of you finding forgiveness with each other. Truly shows the brotherhood and Love you both had for each other.

I definitely like VH with Sammy. Loved Sammy solo and with Montrose. With VH it's just magical.
I agree, it was great with Dave, but this is magical.
Dave VH was spirited and fun, but Sam VH was the perfect match of instrument + voice. The last thing they wrote together ('Humans Being') is an epic track, that shows the musical partnership had by no means topped out. It's a shame it didn't run longer, but it was great while it lasted.

@@rnladyn906 My comment was not a slight on his vocals at all they are amazing. I think even Sammy would agree that there have been better vocalists, guitar players, songwriters and frontmen. As a complete package I can think of few that are even in his neighborhood. Add the humility and genuine love for others and he sits by himself.
No one will Ever agree on a single best vocalist of all time, so that's debatable for life.
I personally think Sammy is on the Mount Rushmore of American born singers, especially considering He's belting it out Better in his 70's than many many have ever done.
