When we got our Sheltie 15 years ago (she passed over the rainbow Bridge a year ago yesterday), we paid for pick of the litter. At 6 weeks, we went to her 1st home, and I put my hand in the pen and called to Cassie, and she came. She was exactly the right dog for us! Three weeks after she passed, we went to ASPCA and the county Animal control (Pound) looking for another and after deciding to rescue a dog, hopefully to miss the house training stage, we ended up with a cur hound - who loves to snuggle on the foot of the recliner! We love Dixie, and she loves her forever home. Both dogs are part of our family and are unofficial service dogs for my husband, who is a sevice connected veteran.
Good Morning!! Aussies are such great dogs (I have four, Sadie, Whiskey, Buster & Kaffe) They all have different personalities and they all will be your "shadow". At this point, I would let the dog choose you, and if you can't decide which one to choose, choose them all! Whatever puppy you choose, you will have a GREAT friend!! Good Luck and congratulations!!
Oklahoma Stat University is currently doing a study with cattle and pine bark as a natural anthelmintic, (parasite killer.) My Border Collie picked me. I was looking at a dark male but Tessa would not let me alone. It's been over 6 years.
My last dog, Chelsea, picked me. A couple had 3 litters of mini dachunds at the same time and mind you this was around 24 years ago. But, anyway all these little doxies were everywhere and I looked at my side and there she was curled up asleep next to my leg( it was a girl ) I wanted a female. Knew she was the one for me and we had her for 16 years. Needless to say she lived a wonderful life.
Nice pie Olivia. All it needed was cheese shredded on top... and some... KETCHUP! I chose my pup by his picture on a Facebook group. I used to Whatsapp my husband cute puppy pics and I just loooove the brindle ones. Didn't expect him to buy it for me though but he did! He is giant now at almost two years old but still likes to jump on me.
In my experience of breeding dogs for the past 21 yrs, I've only seen a few pups actually choose their owner. I remember in particular one instance where I had one guy come, wanting a specific pup which kept running off away from him, while another pup kept coming and sitting on his boot. He did choose that pup which was smaller than the one he wanted. Most people choose a pup themselves based on gender, size, colouring, markings of what they prefer. and activity level. This is hard to tell as pups bcz as you see in your video, they're in naptime mode. You need the breeder to give recommendations based on them watching the pups for their personality over time that is best suited for your needs and lifestyle. Some pups are outgoing and wild, others are laid back and relaxed. Some may narrow down the choice from that and then choose the pup that comes to them. No matter what pup though, you'll end up loving it and it will love you. I often find people choose the first pup that is handed to them. Not always but usually. If the pup is for Olivia, let her have the final decision but based on guidelines set by the parents is my advice.
Thanks we spent a good amount of time checking out all the different puppies. I think Olivia choose the best one for us. We can't bring the puppy home until the middle of January
Depending on what you want the puppy to grow up to be (i.e. livestock dog, herding dog, couch potato) you should consider the puppy's activity/energy level. If you want a security dog, you would NOT want to pick the shy puppy that sits in the corner. Whatever puppy you choose will bond with Olivia if she is the one who feeds and takes the puppy outside etc.
I've been a long time follower, you have a Beautiful family, you have inspired my family to start this journey of homesteading thank you for sharing keep up the great work
You definitely pick the puppy Their personalities as pups will be similar to the ones as adults We picked 2 dogs, the 1st was sleeping all day and in the middle of their shared dish bowls every meal time and loved cuddles He has exact same personality as a adult My other one was a little shy, loved sleeping but had a attitude to her Now as a adult she sleeps most of the day and has conversations with me and is extremely loyal and seeks comfort in me One of their siblings who were more energetic as a puppy ended up being more of a guard dog and runs around absolutely everywhere and chews things he shouldnt be chewing on! Just spend time with them and whichever personality your drawn to go with that one, if you want em to be more relaxed then go with the sleeping ones, if you want one full of energy go with the ones acting a little crazy
Thank you very much for allowing us to follow along with you guys on your amazing, loving and event filled days :). Olivia did a splendid job spreading the potatoes wow! Great family time and great memories! We are truly blessed arent we? Life happens for us to evolve and to imprint love unto others.
We picked by the characteristics we wanted. So as this was going to be our only dog and could be spending chunks of time by themselves, we chose one that would get up and move away when all the others bundled on top. Helps that she was also happened to be the one I fell for from the pics I saw before we went. Our doggy is brilliant, very social with other dogs and people but happy to be left by herself too. Never had any chewing issues either. Wish I could attach pics to here to show you our awesome girl Echo
After Daddy passed, my Mom was having trouble coming home from school to that big ole house. ( family of 7). I took her over to Grandpa Gill'. She looked at me and I reminded her how many times she wanted Chihuahua puppy. So we went into the back yard. She saw two she liked, but they would not come over. She held about three and just stood there until Grandpa Gill said, "Marian look at your feet". The runt was all over Mom since we got into the yard. So, I leaned down and handed her to Mom. The pup licked her and snuggled into her neck. We took her home. She was Mom's companion for around 15 years.
We have always went with “ you pick the pup and the cat picks you”, if that makes any sense. Thanks for sharing. With those names, some really likes Charlie Brown. We also have a rule, you don’t name animals you don’t plan on keeping, let the new owners pick what fits.
Beautiful Olivia is just A-D-O-R-A-B-L-E!! She, most definitely should be the"chooser" of the dog! Every child needs their own pet. (since it's already the middle of Jan. 2019 I'm sure that choice has been made). And she is such a good helper on the farm... already a wonderful homesteader and bright as can be. I wish I would have been blessed with a child like her!
I usually start this differently. I picked the breed based upon what my farm needed and most important what my farm didn't need. I needed a herder, I didn't have enough work for a border collie but I needed something with reliable herding instinct and the ability to settle to be a good house dog to boot. So I went looking for a non border collie that was actively herding. Found a English shepherd breeder with working dogs on a cattle farm and a litter in the works. Then I let her know what I wanted which was a social dog, without too much drive but a moderate amount of prey drive. A year ago I brought him home and he is the best, easiest dog I ever owned. Easy on the small stock, active, healthy, and loves people.
Thanks what you call recycling the tree! Our goats love evergreen needles and bark also. Olivia is such a trooper, she didn't give up on that can opener. I think you should pick the puppy out. We let the puppy pick us, the first one that crawled into my hubby's lap. That was a mistake because the dog is shy and anxious.
I make a "winter garden" in a large brandy snifter for my granddaughter. She enjoyed watch the worms working in the soil. Part of the "garden" was violet plants, and grasses. It was lovely. Then, one day I noticed the greenery was missing. I lifted the glass from the top and, looking down into the snifter, spied a grasshopper looking back at me. My granddaughter had added this to see what would result. I am not certain, but I think the grasshopper looked up at me and said, "Is there any more?".
I love the winter coats on the goats. I’ve never seen the goats with such thick coats, most of the homesteaders I follow/know are in the south so they mow the lawn year round.
Find some of that heavy plastic strip they use in warehouse freezers to put over the goat door, then the goats can come and go but the door is still sealed. Good job on the farm.
worm composting is so rewarding, but man the setup is difficult if you don't have a warm enough indoor space. I did it for months until the bug population was taking over our house. It makes such great nutrition for gardens! A huge difference.
I think it is a bit of both, the puppy picking you and you picking the puppy. Such cute little Australian Shepherd puppies, I used to have two Aussie sisters,a black tri and a red tri. They were wonderful. One of my dogs now is an Australian cattle dog,she is very similar to the Aussies. Happy puppy picking!
The last time we picked out a puppy it was for our son, we let him pick out the puppy and it was spot on the best dog still to this day some 10 years later.
I was in your area this fall dirt biking(Lisbon NH) what a cool place to live. We left from Haverhill and did a big loop. I will take my dual sport up to Mt Washington in the spring. Cool channel.
Olivia..I love those chocolate discs with the white beads on them. Those are some of my favorites!! Love watching you homestead! Are they Australian Shepherds? I can tell you the best dog I have ever had was an Aussie/Lab mix. He slept on his back when he was a puppy and he still does at 9 years old. An awesome log. Love puppies!!!
You will never regret allowing the puppy to pick YOU!!! You will always have a best friend. I will sit down and let the pups come to me, and normally one will stay and the rest wonder off, tho I did go home with two, once!!! HAPPY TIMES ;-)
Heres a few tips i used for picking a pup... Drop keys test n watch their reactions who runs who goes to it first who doesn't care...also bring like n umbrella n pop it open outside of puppy run n watch...you will get a good judge how they react to new things n confidence level...I choose the one who goes to keys n recovers quickly from the umbrella ... edit: Another hint get a bigger bingy n put pallets in it to potty train in a puppy play yard.. eventually u can move it next to door n so on...
The puppy definitely chooses you... Our ACD (Blue Heeler) picked me (and by proxy, my husband) 8 years ago. Dingo constantly reminds us that she chose us and she could have picked another family.... we are her (willing) hostages. Working breeds are the best!!! Congrats you guys!
cute puppies it would be hard to pick just one. Liv is very good at helping you cook and help with the animals. She is one smart little girl. Happy New Year to you and your family
Years ago I adopted an aussie that had been abused. It bit my son while I was making supper. He was afraid of it after that. I moved to a rented farm and when my back was turned he would run off to a neighbors to play with their dog. After he did that numerous times I got tired of bringing him back so I asked them if they wanted him. He chose them so I let them have him. He was good at herding and he helped me to catch all my ducks and geese by just knocking them down while I grabbed them. I would get another aussie but start off with a pup. Love the merles.
You should pull out one of your garden pump waters that you use for your seedlings. It would be easier for your daughter to water with. Just a thought. Can’t wait till the end of the video to see what/which you choose.
This is the first time I have seen your channel. What a beautiful family!!! Who still says grace before they eat!!! What a blessing to accidently come across, on this blessed Thanksgiving! Thank you! EDIT I CANNOT BELIEVE THIS!!!! I don't even know how I came across your video. I stopped to comment when I saw you say grace. But here is the true mind blower for me!! Tomorrow, we (me, my adult son, and his autistic son) go to get our new family addition. AN AUSSIE PUPPY! What are the odds???
Great video. Ended with the puppies. Everyone loves puppies. So I'm way against me having goats but yours are so calm. Makes me think. I hate that. Do you have to trim their feet?
When will you breed the doelings? Most goats can be bred to freshen at about a year old. Putting a small amount of vinegar in the water will increase the number of does you get at freshening. Worm composting seems to be a way to go. I wonder if the benefits will be better running vegetable waste through a worm, a chicken or a pig? I guess the idea is to use the scraps to make compost and not flushing the scraps down a garbage disposal . Great work All. Great information. God bless you for a great 2019. I would have never thought of feeding my goats on a Christmas tree. We usually leave our tree up until after January 6th. We have even left our tree up until after Mid February. Life is sure different in New Hampshire than in the Texas Gulf Coast. Al you ha really been blessed. I remember when you we approaching 5000 subscribers. The casserole looks neat. What a great way to use left overs. God bless Our troops, God bless America's and you great family. .
I just ordered some worms from your link. Can't wait to get them. I've never tasted goat milk but it's on my goals list for 2019! My crazy chickens have been laying in the coop so I put fake eggs into the boxes and they kicked them out and only one chicken will lay in the boxes! Lol! Awe! Cute puppies!
We had to pick out a pure blue heeler, going to the breeder, we found that all the puppies were very stand off-ish to us except two and because im better with dogs and behavior work, I let the puppy that picked my husband be the puppy that we picked. I think its important to find a dog that likes the kids 1st before they like the parents because that dog will learn to love you when you feed it and take it out to work.
By the way. The chickens want to be on the highest roost but that many won't fit. The poor chickens on the bottom roosts are getting pooped on. A roost against the other side can be as high as the tallest nesting box roost and there will still be room under it for the chickens during the day. Just my two cents!
I like that set up for the worms may have to think about getting one. You could save the wood from the tree as a walking stick. They cleaned it up good
Hi Al, From many years experience I would venture to say that first time fresheners, both goats and cattle, don't hit anywhere near peak production until their 2nd freshening and often in the 3rd freshening they do even better. With such a small breed you will likely need a 2nd milker to get sufficient milk for family usage and or cheese making. Personally, I'd look for another milk goat for the spring and I'd advise she comes into your herd a month or more before time for her freshening. Suit yourself....Always a nice video! Rick in Pa.
Good Morning Al & Family , I think that the goats are saying that they want some fresh browse even in the winter time. You could setup some portable fencing around some still brushy areas and get a head start on spring growth. The goats sure look fat for it being winter time. I don't know anything about choosing a puppy as I have never purchased one . All of my dogs have either been given to me or they have chosen me. My first dog was Tippy. She was a mix of German Shepard and Collie. She had the confirmation and markings of a German Shepard and the coloration of a Collie. A beautiful dog . She started life as a farm dog. But , she wanted to be a people dog . One day she showed up at my house and stayed the day until the farmer came looking for her. A few days later and she was back again. And again the farmer came looking for her. And then a third time. The fourth time the farmer said, " You may as well keep her since this is where she wants to be anyway ." From then on I was her human . A smart , obedient , friendly dog. Until , one day a bully pushed me down to the ground. That was when we found out that she was not going to allow her human to be treated like that as she pulled the bully away from me by the seat of his pants . And then she went back to being a friendly dog again. No one ever bullied me again ! At least not when Tippy was around. And Tippy never allowed me to go anywhere without her. Except to school. Even then she was waiting for me at the schoolyard gate when school let out. My mom always said that she could set her watch by when Tippy left the house to go meet me after school let out . Tippy was quite a dog and she found me !
Depends if you want a working dog or a best friend. I went to choose my first puppy last weekend, id never done it before but had seen pictures and was pretty certain I was going to go for this particular one. I was chosen by a completely different one and after an hour deciding, he is the one I chose. I will be picking him up in less than 4 weeks (at 10 weeks old!) 😁 Btw I LOVE your goats.
Pluto will need extra love too, she will feel left out otherwise. And as to milk...we love our Jersey cream, skimmed off the top not machine separated, it is super thick and tasty in cocoa. It will be so cool when you get your goats in full production. We make yogurt in out instant pot. The worm farm set up looks super interesting.
And thank you for finally getting back to some of us who have been waiting for a roosting area for Andy's gang. Could you please let us know if the hens in there are laying any eggs ? Thanks! I'd appreciate it if you spent more than a min in Moose's coop, and the twice a week spot videos on Andy's gang. How are the ducks doing? Have a great weekend.
Love your channel. Why do you have two different places for your chickens? I have a Vermibag mammoth. It is crazy how fast these worms grow. I got my worms from the same place you did.
You guys in America have such cool candy stores!! Bit jealous! Puppies pick you most definitely. The way we chose our dog when I was a kid is to ask the breeder to release all the puppies and see which one ran to me. We ended up choosing the puppy that ran to me first and grabbed a hold of my pants leg and wouldn't let go lol :D I think cats and dogs definitely are the ones who choose their owners.
My grand parents use to own a bait & tackle shop in Kissimmee Florida. I must have been about 15 or 16 years old. It was back in the late 70's to very early 80's. The shop was set up on the porch, on the side of their house and they had this very huge worm farm in back of their house for fishers to buy worms for fish bait. The worm beds were made of ply wood and they were very long, very big and flat. They were rectangular and they were set up in long rows with walk ways through them. And (of course) they had a tomcat to watch for mice in the worm farm. I remember I use to go back there to visit the cat and give him a little bit of company. The shop was a Bass shop because there was only Bass fish in that area. My uncle did silk screening for my grand parents, which was one of his trades, (among working with sheet metal and welding for some place else). And he use to do silk screening on t-shirts for my grandparents' business. The logo was called (get this!) "Kiss my Bass". Lol! I know I'm getting off the subject a little now, but I just want to share another t-shirt he silk screened while we were at war with Iran at the time .... The picture was Mickey Mouse holding up his middle finger, and at the bottom of the t-shirt it said, "HEY IRAN!!". Hahahahaha! My uncle made quite a profit while that lasted. I thought I'd share this as well. Everyone loved the t-shirts he silk screened.
I tend to choose the runt of the litter, and the one who will be taking care of the puppy when it then becomes a dog gets to choose. Puppies are so addictive. Also want to note this is the nicest family!!
Are those puppies born without tails, or have they been docked (cut off)? I wondered because here in UK it is against the law to dock them, even the breeds traditionally docked, like spaniels.
Good Morning Lumnahs. I would pick the puppy that sleeps on it's back and has spots. I always think it's funny when dogs sleep on their backs and I just like spots. Lots of cuties to pick from there. Blessings to you all, especially Pluto, who has quite the surprise coming. I've been wondering about the pepper you brought in. Mine is pretty but no peppers.
A new puppy for the new year! I would let the puppy come to me, that way I can evaluate their personality. I wouldn't want an aloof dog but then again, as a guardian livestock dog, they should be more focused on the livestock and not me. I knew the goats would eat the Christmas tree but not that fast. I make pine needle tea and it is really good for you. The layer between the bark and the sap wood can be eaten as well. Another great video, Al, it will be interesting to see how the worms do. Just don't let the chickens too close! ;-)
If you want the dominant puppy for protection, choose the most outgoing pup that comes up and tries messing with your shoes and pants, it will be a more difficult pup to train, but probably will act on its own a bit better when the owner ain’t around (protection wise)
I've always picked ..... unless I was looking at only one choice - bought a German Shepherd puppy from a couple who decided they had bit off more than they could chew ~8^) .... I had him for 12+ years. He turned out to be a bruiser, which I knew he would, cuz he had some "uge" paws .... ended up weighing between 110-120 lbs .... red&black long coat ..... very handsome dog. I miss him still. I gather you are picking a puppy? I liked all those furballs .... did you say what kind of dogs they were? Have a great day of puppy picking AL, Gina & "can we just get all these puppies" Olivia.
Question: Next fall, if you breed all 3goats, won't they all dry up at the same time? Can't you stagger their breeding so you get a decent milk supply all year round? ❤🌅🌵
I think the breeder can help with picking out the right puppy for the individual depending on their specific needs. Sinse you guys are living a farm lifestyle, an aussie is a great fit, but do you want it for more livestock guardian? Hoarding stock? Home pet? Some puppies have more drive then others, drive to work. Some may be more passive. So let the breeder (who knows the puppies personalities best) help you choose.
I love keeping up with you all learn so much from you the water proof where can i get them I went to my tractor supply and they do not care them, we really need them here with the cold water and ice. keep up the good work and love god bless you and yours
What a challenge. We had our son bring home strays he would find in the park. I would say yes or no to each. We had several over the years. Loyal dogs each one.
Just wondering if your going to make a deck outside your sliding doors. Some patio furniture, bbq a place to sit and enjoy a coffee. Also have you thought about making a skating rink. Great place to play tag, race etc. Just wondering.

That pine tree is loaded with antioxidants, Vit C, and the oils from the tree are a natural anti worming agent. Gold stuff. Natures Answer.

If Charlie Brown was to see his tree now his reaction would be "Good grief". Love the lolly shop 🙂

Yalls daughter is a beautiful young lady and very good help for her Daddy building the worm garden!

Hi from the U.K. you are a lovely man with a lovely family living a great life. Thank you for sharing your world.
In my brother in law's case, the dog picked him. It was an Akita from a rescue and it put its paws on his shoulders. They've been bonded ever since. 🙏
Olivia, delicious looking pie! I bet you’re a huge help to your parents. Especially Mom coming home to a hot meal.
I usually choose the most alert. Then the one with the characteristics you need it for.
Thanks what you call recycling the tree! Our goats love evergreen needles and bark also. Olivia is such a trooper, she didn't give up on that can opener. I think you should pick the puppy out. Omg wow on the debarking of the trees with the goats lol got to turn it over so they can do the other side so you can make something out of it lol
worm composting is so rewarding, but man the setup is difficult if you don't have a warm enough indoor space.
This is my first time watching a Lumnah Acres video and I really enjoyed it. You are such a great father!
good day to you Al, Gina & Olivia !! thanks for sharing another awesome update and adventures on & off the homestead !! 👨🌾🎥👍✝
I had a German Shepherd for fourteen years and he was the best dog I could ever ask for
I was in your area this fall dirt biking(Lisbon NH) what a cool place to live.
You could tie a piece of small rope through the hole on the zipper to the worms. It will be so much easier to open and close
You can use the milk for shaving soap puck aswell, glycerin, goat milk, honey or sea buckthorn, fat or whatever you want in the soap
I've always picked the quiet shy one. But we have had many pick us as they have just shown up on our property and stayed.
Cool beans I got the same worm bag a few days ago and got the frame built. Letting it rest and adding worms this weekend. Yay. Good luck with yours.
Can't wait to hear how yours works for you!
Yes I trim the goats feet about every 6 weeks. I think a lot has to do with the breed of goats
Pluto does need a friend 🐶! We have 6 crazy dogs! Wouldn't have it any other way. Have fun with the new addition!
I know this is an older video but i use to keep worms for fishing and i found out that used coffee grounds works great for feed for the worms
I just did a ton of research on worm faming....building today....smiles. You have aweaome content...just enough variety.....aweaome!!!
I think you do great vlogs, have a beautiful family and a wonderful girl. Love your animals and good luck to Olivia with her new puppy! Peace :)
What cute puppies! Amazing how the goats made quick work out of that Christmas tree.
Rick in Pa.
Good Morning Al & Family ,
I think that the goats are saying that they want some fresh browse even in the winter time.
Those are little australian shepherds. Very good at guarding thieir food bowl. LOL
Down in Maryland it's been above average temps with tons of rain it sucks I want snow
Depends if you want a working dog or a best friend.
I went to choose my first puppy last weekend, id never done it before but had seen pictures and was pretty certain I was going to go for this particular one. I was chosen by a completely different one and after an hour deciding, he is the one I chose. I will be picking him up in less than 4 weeks (at 10 weeks old!) 😁
Btw I LOVE your goats.
We visited this candy store ,its in the Guinness book of world records, they had samples as well.
I picked my border collie online and drove 12 hours to Oklahoma to pick him up. turned out perfect.
I got ridiculously happy when I realized we have the same dishes! lol. Yes, my life is that boring right now...
The water surface is frozen and there is thus no available water for the animals. It matters not whether there is 1 cm or 10 of ice.
I knew the breed or mix but I sat down and picked the puppy that came to me from the playing bunch.
The logo was called
(get this!) "Kiss my Bass".
You'll have to tell us if the goat's milk tastes a bit like a Christmas tree 🎄 LOL! ❤🌅🌵
Are those puppies born without tails, or have they been docked (cut off)? I wondered because here in UK it is against the law to dock them, even the breeds traditionally docked, like spaniels.
The tales were docked
Good Morning Lumnahs. I would pick the puppy that sleeps on it's back and has spots. I always think it's funny when dogs sleep on their backs and I just like spots. Lots of cuties to pick from there. Blessings to you all, especially Pluto, who has quite the surprise coming.
I've been wondering about the pepper you brought in. Mine is pretty but no peppers.
That candy store is 'awesomely sweet'..My hubbie would be like a kid in that store... guess Olivia has chosen her special little puppy!😊😊
Oh boy
Puppies
Who gonna be the puppy master is the question
Looking forward to seeing this new adventure
You have to get all the puppies!
Energy level that fits your lifestyle is also important. All are beautiful, hard to pick.
The puppy picks you! A thoroughly enjoyable episode! 🤩🐶👍🏾
We have had many dogs here in the country. Abandon dogs mostly. The only one with a selfish nature was one I went and bought. I love dogs.
Wishing all of the best for you and your family Al in 2019. I’ve always been successful if the dog chose me. God bless you all.
I’ve chose puppies sometimes, other times I let the pup pick me. I usually go by the personality I’m looking for in a pup.
Love all the videos.
I have a worm farm made of polystyrene boxes - my worms are for my fish, I have 7 aquariums and a pond.
I bet the fish love the worms
You could use that stripped tree stem to make a staff or a sheep crook
Def owners pick depending on what you want the dog for and your situation. Def pick based on personality in that context versus looks.
have. a great new year from australia
Just wondering if your going to make a deck outside your sliding doors. Some patio furniture, bbq a place to sit and enjoy a coffee. Also have you thought about making a skating rink. Great place to play tag, race etc. Just wondering.
