I live in central Florida. We got some real wind from Milton. I live in a 126 year old house. I know very well things happen. We prepped the house by getting the roof tied down to the burrid and concreted in cinder blocks. Our neighbors lost their roofs in charlie but doing that is something my dad always did while i was growing up. Then we started packing the truck Incase we had to go. We had food for us, the dogs and cats. Blankets and extra clothes.
That was just in case we had to leave in an emergency. Inside we had all the supplies we needed to hang out for weeks if needed. I had the dogs in crates and cats in carrier's during the storm. We have extra crate's in the back of the truck if we needed to carry them out. If we needed to leave all we had to fo was Carry the cats in their carriers. Animals freek out and i didn't want to try and catch them if we had to go. Everyone was safe and by the front door. We all stayed in one room during the storm.
I even tied the coop roof down so they wouldn't lose theirs with the wind. It was good i did because the wind tried picking it up. The nails have give now so i know the roof felt it.
My wall was shaking. It was seriously scary but we were prepared as much as possible. In hurricanes if you have to go now you don't have time to go get those bags. You only have time to get up and run out. My dad was always ready for any situation and taught me by showing me how things were done. Also our weapons were on our body because you just never know.
We also had a big tent Incase we had no other options. At least we would have shelter. Trying to find a place after an event like that is a nightmare.
Yes please do some videos of meals in a jar. Also the pepper sauce. My husbands Dad used to do that and we would love to see it done. It has been a long time. Thanks for your videos!!

Thank you for the reminder. Seeing how the hurricanes displaced so many without warning made me realize I have to get some basics in case I were to have to evacuate. I don't have an emergency to go bag, despite having a couple weeks worth of food on hand in jars. Realize I need a copy of my important papers too.

Frozen veggies are super cheap. They are already blanched, so they are thaw, rinse and dehydrate ready. Canned veggies are drain rinse and dehydrate ready. Mylar bags with an oxygen absorber are much lighter for bug out bags. Water is the heaviest item that should ever be in a bug put bag. Jars are better for shelter in place.
Thank you for your examples of what you do. To go bags are important and from you today I learned to tell everyone 'don't worry about whose you get just get one and we will sort them later!' Sounds simple but might be very important one day. After you said it i thought, yep this one will be saying where's mine or to another saying you've got mine and that one responding 'no i don't this is mine' and here we are in an emergency bickering over "wheres mine"! Thanks!

Mr. & Mrs, I know you are prayer warriors. After watching Milton hurricane lift up some prayer for guidance. Was on the verge of moving to Florida from Chicago. I’m taking a serious pause, hitting my knees before I do anything. If you can agree with the scripture that promises, The Lord will send his angels before me to lead and guide in the way I should go to the place he’s already prepared for me.

Think about getting your landline phones back for several good reasons. I got mine back after my smart phone and flip phones went down for way over a day and they went down several months ago too. Many blessings to you all.
If using plug in to an outlet, that’s not a landline. Landlines are the old rotary and touch tone phones connected to the wall and not using airwaves.
They are trying to get rid off all landline in 2025 except those that can use voip
I have one princess phone on a regular landline. I pay 30 bucks a month for just local service! But it has come in handy in the past. I won't pay the highway robbery cost of long distance service.
The FCC got rid of the copper lines we all think of for land line phones. Now, it's all over fiberoptic lines like internet. It would probably be better to have starlink mini and a solar powered battery. You could still use voip, but wouldn't worry about a line being broken.

The tornado outbreak from milton was ridiculous.
Thank you Mrs. H...great advice for all. I made 5 gallon dehydrated veggies and canned meats. I made them by genre, Italian, Mexican, Southern etc. I have 6 tubs stacked along my kitchen wall, where I can grab them and go. Each can has a manual can opener.

Cooked, dehydrated beans also go by the label of quick beans... if folks are interested, you can do that with rice also.

I saw a lady here on RUclips that did a tote with a weeks worth of food. I thought that was a pretty cool idea. Put the tote in a certain place and a couple cases of water next to it. Then have the go bags with changes of clothes and such in there.
Meals in jars and how to prepare would be soooo helpful. Can Red beans and rice be done this way so all you add is the water?

I'm getting ready to do my pepper sauce as well! I still do stockings at Christmas for my grown children (I know it's silly) and I put pepper sauce in their stockings! They love it!
I love fast beans--dehydrated cooked pintos, great northerns, etc. I'm trying some cooked with the spices, seasonings, etc. made into fast beans.

Suggestion??? Dollar Tree has vacuum bags for sweaters blankets etc., suggestion take one of these bags and place your Mylar dehydrated foods or cans vacuum seal this bag which helps to keep out oxygen. My canned food after experience of buying way too many cans of food over Two years ago just sitting, note I’m not throwing them out as I understand they are still good, but watch for nutrients. If I can my jars as Mrs. H, I ensure healthy varieties. Will be canning this week as much as possible, God willing.

I have been switching from canning jars for dehydrated items to plastic jars that I am recycling from store bought things like peanut butter, mayo, and such. They are air and watertight and aren’t as heavy as glass jars. Just a thought. You don’t have to spend money on ziplock or other plastic containers.
