pre-ordered Sony Xperia 1 II with a pair of Sony WH-1000XM3, was time to upgrade from my 6 year old sony xperia z2 can't wait!
Problem is most of these features will be overlooked by "regular" phone reviewers. Then when samsung or iphone copies it it's suddenly a revolution.
- 4k,hdr,oled,643ppi density - the highest by a huge margin,1B colors screen, 60hz tho.. with fake 90hz,

these are some of the features that stands out and if you pre-order the phone you get a pair of Sony WH-1000XM3 or WF-1000XM3 included !
This phone looks like a complete package only cons are some bugs that can easy be fixed and front camera aren't that great, 60hz with fake 90hz and ofc its very expensive.

@@ashalexander1186 It depends on the retailer i guess. In Norway Elkjøp is giving the WH for free on preorder while Komplett gives the WF, dualshock 4 controller and a smart clip for the controller.

This will be my first Sony phone. I can't wait. I just wish I didn't have to wait until the end of July to get it.

I've had quite a few Sony phones in the past. Pretty much, the only reason I swapped to the S10 was because of the removal of the headphone jack but ironically enough, Samsung have just removed it from their new flagship phones and Sony have brought it back. I loved my Sony Ericsson back in the day and I loved my newer Xperia's. It will be nice to go back.

@@atlgator1928 I'm going to omit the 5G thing since LTE has not magically gotten slower all of a sudden. LTE speeds will be fine for the next 4 to 5 years and beyond. The price I can agree with though but that's my only real negative on the phone.

I really enjoyed your review of Sony Xperia I Mk.II. Sony did something genius with its power consumption on gaming mode with HS power control. If I game on the go or watch movies from the phone and there is no available outlet, I can simply plug in a high capacity power bank and use that instead. It saves your phone's power for more important things.
TK . Love your video and yes I will be getting one.
A few things about motion blur reduction as I understand it:
1) most of the video content is filmed in 24/30fps, so even 60hz display is enough
2) unlike native 90hz motion blur does kinda help to smooth video content and make it more crisp
3) unlike native 90hz it does not affect battery life this much
4) the reason 1ii doesn't have 90/120hz is SD865 doesn't support these refresh rates on 4k panel
Please correct me if im wrong somewhere.
I think also, Samsung isn't making 90/120hz 4k panels either, so Sony had to use motion blur
video smoothing is the bane of many TV enthusiast... gonna try them when I can myself 😅
Also a plague for all smartphones at the moment, none has autoframe rate to adjust the frequency of the screen to the movie playing and avoid stuttering when playing 24fps on a 60Hz.
Ipad have this featur where the display switches to 24 Hz, hope it will come one day to android hardware...maybe having 120Hz refresh rate panel will help with this little problem....but yes i think i rather have a 4k image @60Hz instead of 1080p @24fps when needed.

Great review--can you check if the video is true CFR or the old VFR? VFR is a constant hassle for mixing phone vid with camera vid. Tx.
That is dark mode, that's how it is.
As to Netflix, that bug isn't there in the latest Netflix beta.
Funny enough it's the other way around on my 1+ 5T, the notification shade is dark grey while settings are black. I guess it comes down to where you spend more time, in the notification shade or in the settings menu, in the long run. For me it's notifications, these days I only mess in settings cause the 5T changes my bluetooth codec on it's own (among other annoyances).

LOVE this mobile. Definitely my favorite mobile design in many many years. That said I really hope they improve the standard camera app too. I LOVE the manual controlls but vast majority of the time when I take a photos it will be in a few seconds. Phone out of pocket, launch camera app, select scene, take the photo and trust the camera has the smarts to nail the shot. If they can at least match camera options and quality of Pixel. Things like Timelapse, Night Mode, Astro shots etc would all be great to have. Maybe GCam will support this mobile? Would also be nice if they added HEIC support
I havent been this excited about a phone since the LG V10. Good camera options. Well built. The audio isn't getting rave reviews, and my current phone's an LG G8 so hopefully its not too much of a step down. Hopefully this will be the phone I've been waiting for since my v30 died.
The screen alone is just out of this world, movies and youtube look amazing!

@Tessoro Desoto that may be correct. A lot of other ppl who already grabbed the phone and reviewed it, only used the android built-in app, as I don't believe the photo pro app is available in Japan yet. Which means that software must be still in it's early age. Hopefully with some updates Sony will fix the poor video quality when shooting 4k, or the telephoto's lens lack in clarity. I still plan to pay for my pre-order when it comes, but I would like nothing more but to "get rid" of all that cash with a big smile on my face, instead of having second thoughts about this purchase (with camera being the main reason for me buying this). If only pixel 4xl would have had a wide angle lens... :)
@Tessoro Desoto well, in Japan they don't have photo pro app available yet, so I assume the camera software is still "work in progress" to some extent.... meaning that I really hope they will improve the HDR/4k video recording/etc. They say night mode is coming with the next update so I keep my fingers crossed to also get all of the above! having fixed that, with the true to life colors this phone reproduces, I believe it will worth every penny!
From the samples I've seen, camera could do with some work still especially the 1080p 60 is just wrong. Hopefully they keep updating and refining it throughout the year.

Thanks for the detailed review. In case huawei don't get access to Google apps I am looking for new options to replace my p30 pro when the time comes. This Sony seems like a good option, with attention to all the important features such as audio, screen, camera and battery. I hope to see a dxomark review of it soon.
Is DxoMark relevant for you? They won't rate it high. Mark my words.
To be frank, dxomark will not use photo pro and cinema pro for their review which seriously knocks down its score. The cinema pro app can record 10-bit video in the wider colour gamut BT2020 in 4K HDR that no other smartphone manufacturers can do yet. The photo pro app with live eye AF and 20fps burst shot is unrivalled. It will probably be better to watch RUclips reviews after release for a more realistic take on cameras.
@@peterdurum434 Yes. I am aware of problematic issues with their review method, however they do issue highly detailed repetitive reports and it's convenient to have a numerical scale by which all cameras are judged.

The dynamic range it's very beautiful
They just need to add a night mode for the camera like the 10 ii (and everything else). I know you can configure it using the camera app but that’s slow to set up so you might miss what it is you want to shoot.

That Netflix bug probably has something to do with navigation gestures. I have it too on my Xperia 1 but when I switch to two buttons gestures it works fine.

Hey TK Bay, it sounds like you are really enjoying this phone. I'm thinking to buy it after your videos about it. I'm also interested in the Oneplus 8 pro, which of these do you prefer the most?
I wish someone would do a video showing the white balance changes that you can make with the presets and how it effects the screen, and then if there are any customization that you've found that you like even better than the presets in certain situations
also how does manually changing the white balance compare to apple's true tone display or google's ambient EQ, thx!!!
It actually supports 5G even with US model, there is just no any US carriers' 5G frequency bands that are match or compatible for now for the 5G bands of this Xperia 1 II (mark 2).
Interesting and informative video but how about the max time recording 4k @60fps does the camera turned down at some point because of temperature?
I had my phone 5 hours ago and I love it. Everything you can expect from a flagship model. The audio quality is so good, crystal clear and loud. The display is just gorgeous and it feels like it was more than 60 Hz... One thing that I don't like already, the side of the phone is so slippery, without a case it feels like it's gonna fall out of my hand.
I'm looking forward to try out everything this beautiful phone has to offer...
@TK You did not mention anything in your review on the battery life which i believe is a very crucial part of the review.

Hi TK, just a quick Q about the quality of your normal videos vs the quality of your Saturday morning with tech live streams, the video quality on your normal videos is much better, is that down to editing or are you using a different camera to record your sat morning vids vs your normal content? Keep up the good work!
At 8:22 was this shot of your family taken with the selfie camera or the rear camera? If the latter, what app did you use? Exposure and HDR are on point.
I'm in the UK and have pre-ordered it, been waiting for a phone like this for a while. But, then I think I could buy a Ricoh GR II/III for a similar price.

It's to late for any concerns, I preordered it the first day it was possible. Hopefully they'll soon start shipping (Europe), I'm so impatient, waiting for so long for such a device. Still using my Xperia XZ Premium and can't imagine having any other brand than Sony. All the other phones from other companies got some "features" which totally disqualify them for me, e.g. a notch (god damn, I hate those things), no front facing speakers, no headphone jack etc...
90 or 120hz might be nice to have, but we lived years without it, so no problem. Except for Pc gamers hardly anyone ever experienced anything above 60hz ;)
Will you take pics in auto mode and compare them to the ones taken in photo pro mode? Curious how different the images really are? Buy phones every 4 months and I want 1 to keep for at least a year. This checks a lot of my boxes like front speakers, ip68, 4k display, decent size battery, and triple camera set up. Plus not many people in the US have Sony phones. Do you know how much of a difference the 1ii's ToF sensor makes to video/photo compared to the 5ii? How does it change things? I'm so stuck trying to decide between 1ii and 5ii, the impact of the ToF will be the deciding factor

How do Xperia flagships hold up in the long run? I had a midrange Sony handset a few years back and boy did it not age so well.
I bought the flagship Xperia Z5 in 2015 and apart from a battery change in 2018, it never gave me any troubles and still works fine. Of course, it feels slower now compared to new phones but hey, it's been 5 years.

I've eyed this phone, the LGV60 and the Pixel 4a.
But decided to just replace my OP6 battery, flash a ROM maybe next year and maybe by 2022, this phone will be cheap and I would upgrade to it only because it has what I care most in a phone.
The only thing that keeps me with LG is the Quad DAC.
Was tempted by this but even as an amateur photographer I find it hard to justify the price (for me, I'm not saying phone is not high quality before people jump on me).
While tempting it would only ever be a toy equivalent of a semi pro camera at best, with results in line with that.
I really can't see much difference here compared to other high end flagship photo results from what I've seen so far, jn the end it's still a tiny tiny lens compared to even the cheapest compact out there and the sensor is about as big as the smallest compact had it about 10 years ago, no amount of software control can get past that fact.
I also very much doubt TK Bay will be using it as a camera to film his videos, despite his enthusiasm.
I think it will have educational value for someone wanting to learn about more manual filming and shooting without going out to spend 2k+ for an entry level Sony Pro kit.
Though Sony is hoping that person will then eventually proceed and do just that.
I think the approach is pretty great and something novel, but I also think that in a market desperate for originality it's also a bit overhyped at this point and would only provide real value compared to a more regular and often cheaper flagship device to a very very niche audience.
It would've been better if they added an additional USB c port on the side like the Rog phone 2 to better utilize some of the features.
Can I ask, I can’t find any review that comments on the phones haptic feedback. Can you tell me how good it is in everyday use, navigation etc

My laptop doesn't have the most accurate screen. So it'll be nice to cast/remote desktop, my laptop to the phone to check color accuracy.
it's more like the 5g from snapdragon chipsets in USA are disabling the 5G. it's impossible for the manufacturer to get rid the support of 5g tho except the firmware did help to disable it imo. but it's bot something that would be bothered much. 5G was sure a future mind blowing internet speed but it's still not ready until most of the flagship with chipsets are support at least with 5g mmWave.
Lack of 600 and 700mhz with TMobile is unacceptable. Having it and not having it is the difference between European and us/India based firmware on my old OnePlus 7 pro. It's all capable with Qualcomm and lame I can't get "5g" with TMobile by Sony simply adding the bands.
From what i heard that 5G exclusive with carrier and Sony always have problems with them in US so their phone cant use 5G in US
@@minhthuc1232003 my OnePlus 7 pro is global device works on tmobile enhanced network and that's older chipset. Google Fi mvno too.
@@svnbit8408 Yeah it has 700 MHz (Band 12) on the 4G LTE network for T-Mobile, but STILL NOTTTT 600 MHz (Band 71) on 4G LTE. Sony, what are you waiting for dudes??!
And yeah, no U.S. 5G bands on the 1 II is just inexcusable! This is a main reason why I won't buy it, even though I want to! They didn't even discount it to $1000 for no 5G, which is even more insulting. Also, no dedicated Face Unlock is idiotic for a 2020 flagship phone IMO. And that screen brightness.............600 nits??! The competition is offering up to 1300, or more than double.
If Sony fixes all three of these issues in the future, I may reconsider. But for ALL the many great things the 1 II offers, Sony should've been smarter about all this.

Hey, I've just got my Sony Xperia 1 II but the brightness is less than my note 9 at max brightness, with auto brightness off, does anyone know if there are any settings I'm missing?

Right now only showing 1080p the Xperia 1 I have does show 4k on prime for me, so it's a matter of the phone actually launching for Netflix and Amazon to activate the service

I think i will wait to see what the Pro variant offer for 5G and at least with the micro hdmi input maybe i wont depend on a developer's app will to allow 4K streaming or not on the phone
I need an advice, I am a fan for beautiful screens on mobile phones and currently have a galaxy S20 Ultra but I am seriously considering buying this Xperia phone because everybody say that the 4K screen is gorgeous but I am not sure if the 4K resolution is worth at 6.5 inches compared to the 6.9 of the galaxy not to mention the 120hz refresh.
The reason I am asking is because in order to pay for the Xperia I will sell the S20 Ultra and of course there's is no way I can play with the phone now at least here in USA to make my decision, I know, I can always wait for the phone to be released and go to best buy to physically touch and experience the Xperia but by that time I will loose the free earphones during the pre order offer.

Looks like a great phone. It's unfortunate it's not 5G that is a deal breaker for me. Everything else sounds great. I've had to upgrade and gone for a mid range phone for now.
Have you tried to use the sony BT remote? GP-VPT2BT
Does the Xperia 1 II have WiFi calling? I’ve seen yes and no on the Xperia 1 and someone even said the carriers don’t allow it for Sony. I have one on order and must have WiFi calling. Also, the subscription bell for notifications is turned off on the iDud 6 and states this is so for children’s content.
TK, I am using iphone XS Max now and I have my eyes on this one. Would you say it would be a good one to switch to? May be the bugs are just pre-public release bugs? One more question, how is sony when it comes to release Android software updates? Please help TK

@DukeMedo This is no better than samsung really. Sony generally offers 2 major OS upgrade this is no better and certainly not faster than samsung anymore.
Also i am ok with additional delays as long as it is finally delivered.
But yes Sony has quite a good reputation for updates

Have the Netflix popup issue also on Huawei devices. looks like a netflix issue
How is the audio from the headphone jack? I know it can't beat LG but still... 😎
LG is the King this is better than most as it has a dedicated DAC but the amp could have been better
