No notch and 3.5 are great underrated features.
I'll never understand why a notch is so much different than the punch hole...I personally don't like a punch hole...actually don't care...lol
I don't really like either. I wish Android would letu s completely disable that strip where the camera is so it doesn't cut into video or games. It's so stupid.

I'm so tempted by this phone but not sure I will do the phone justice being an 'average' Joe. Needs to be bought by someone who knows their way around a camera.
Notches are such a dumb fashion. It's a compromise to house superior face unlock technology for Apple. But some crappy selfie camera? Not worth it imo.
Most of the time, the hole punch on my Note 10 fades away into the background. It blends in to the black bar at the top in portrait. For most videos I don't notice it, and most games don't stretch that far, but for those that do it's horrible.
In general whenever I notice it though I really wish it wasn't there.
That H.S power mode is gonna have everyone going nuts about it when Apple "invent" it in a few years time.
Yup. It's too good a feature not to include.

It's a really "smart" feature for smartphones.
Unfortunately for Apple users, they are just using a basic phone with simple touch screen controls.

Almost nothing is missing. It's truly one of the most complete options of the year.

Sony's phones have always had that mystique of being premium device and u know what it's worth it.. the built quality.. the waterproof rating, the battery, there's so much fine detail they don't get any credit in this industry
get my xperia 1 in a couple days. most people see the battery size and assume it sucks, but everything i've seen from people who actually spent some time with it say battery life is surprisingly good, and the batteries are especially good long term. i'll find out for myself soon enough.

I'm currently running on my XZ3, and I'm definitely getting this phone, I'm a Sony fan for a reason, they NEVER follow, when you review the retail unit please focus on the audio, you're an audio guy, i am too.

Got mine I also Had the XZ3. Front stereo speakers are an improvement over the XZ3. Yet to test out my B & W PX wireless headphones with it yet.
Just make sure you turn on the Dolby Atmos. It isn't on by standard and it drastically changes how amazing this phone sounds
I also have XZ3.. But is it really worth upgrading already??? The camera on XZ3 is really good, is it much of a difference compared to X1 ii??

Who even cares about pillarboxing apart from people trying to be obnoxious...
The whole bezels are bad thing came from marketing departments needing to find something to sell their next devices on anyway... The lack of bezels actually makes phones super inconvenient to use one handed which is usually what I'm doing... Unwanted inputs galore!
Especially on curved screens.
You text while driving I'm guessing...why else would using your other hand on your phone be so inconvenient, since you are concentrated on your phone anyway. Don't give me the holding a cup or eating either...you text and drive...smh

Swipe typing is easy yet faster than the normal two thumbs method. And last I checked you can't use two fingers on a gesture keyboard.

I just love how we still have bezels on Sony phones. Don't really like those full screen mini notch displays...look all the same.
I think bezels look better than notches.
... and then there are punchholes. Another step in the wrong direction.
I personally wouldn't mind popup cameras if it means retaining some bezel that helps to hold the damn thing. But no, pop cameras have to go because they move - even though it's actually hard to make them fail.

Finally... a Sony smartphone that (on the surface) lives up to their rich pedigree in the tech world. So many Xperias in the past were half baked middle of the road smartphones. Unapologetically Sony is a great way to put it, this thing looks properly professional and will likely be my next device down the road. Also Juan is the right guy to review it, I appreciate the depth your reviews offer, nobody else on RUclips can match that level of analysis.
You're taking phone reviews on a different level. Surely, those who are bothered by Sony's choice of names are the least creative people, not reviewers.

Bravo on this review. I had a budget Sony Xperia Z3, I think, and it was really one of my favorite overall phone experiences. I always wondered why the last 5% of the charge took so long. Now I know it was to preserve the battery. And I think the industrial design on this phone is perfection.

It is kind of sad that a lot of people is not even checking this phone up... they start criticizing everything, the battery size, the name, the prize, they question the cameras both photo and video... and I am like ¨what?!¨ Yes I am sony fan, and personally owned three Xperias and a Sony Ericson; but really why we have to criticize the phone so much when honestly is still cheaper than a S20 ultra, yes you can trade in a device to get it cheaper but it does not change the point and the same goes for Apple.
Sony just simply build yet another extraordinary phone.
It really feels like some folks only review based on popularity, which is a shame.
Samsung and Apple basically taught them to forget about camera controls and trust their auto software processing entirely.
Try giving them a proper professional digital camera like an A9II and I'd be surprised to know that they actually know the modes on it.

I REALLY need to make this a long term follow up phone.
Different target audience - the p40 pro has a more marketing quality of photos, for example, it makes a day out of the night, which is liked by the mass unsophisticated user, but most photographers dont like it.

So excited to upgrade to this phone. The first phone this year I've genuinely been interested from a consumer fulfilment perspective.
Not to many gimmicks just all the that would be greats specs and features that other manufacturers are seemingly forgetting in the quest to have the next big wow feature!
It's kinda crazy. There's a LOT of refinement, but I can't point to anything that feels frivolous.

@JuanBagnell, I have never watched your reviews until you and TK did the Live stream. Your in-depth style, with a focus more on real functionality, is great stuff. Sounds like the Xperia 1 Mark 2 doesn't quite measure up to the V60 Quad DAC, neh? I don't suspect Sony would cannibalize the Walkman market - good enough for light listening, but my NW-ZX300 and FiiO M11 will still need to be part of my EDC.
Oh for sure. If you're already on hardware like that, you'll hear the difference on this headphone jack.
Good video, thanks for checking out and posting a video about the Sony. The phone looks great - it has all the features I would look for in a phone, plus a LOT of features I never thought of.
The two features I’m not sure about are the side mounted fingerprint reader and the 21:9 aspect ratio. Not that I’m against those two, but I would need to actually have the phone in my hand to see how I would like using them.
Unfortunately, Sony doesn’t seem interested in selling phones here in Canada, which severely limits my ability to check one out in person.

Sony xperia xz2 premium this is my phone from Sony it just got another security patch update yesterday for June 1st 2020 what you just talked about in the video hilarious and my phone is how many years old since it came out in the market to buy and I bought it a year and a half ago LOL

@@SomeGadgetGuy yeah, i was deciding between a galaxy s10 or s10 and an xperia 1 and chose the x1 largely because it just looks much nicer to me. also with my current galaxy the battery life got worse each year, and i've been hearing a lot that the sony batteries are very good long term, and also the battery life is better than the battery size indicates.
Here waiting this Xperia 1 Mark II to update my Xperia Z5 :') I years specting something similar but better, and here we got it! Full screen, front stereo speakers with 3.5 jack, battery life saving, amazing hardware for gaming, amazing cameras for life :)

Where can i get the iron Man mark two wallpaper? I've been using Xperia 1ii since a month now and have been trying to find this picture but didn't find anywhere.
Man I’m so stuck between the IPhone pro max and this Xperia II. Great “review” dude, best one I’ve seen and I’ve seen A LOT. I’ll wait till you release the “complete review” to make my choice lol.
Side sense works best in manual mode. For me it works every single time. Switch to 'operate on inner edge of screen'. Keep light transparency to see where to press.
Awesome review as always. I like the way you do a completely honest review on phones. And you also give credit to manufactures for things that may seem meeehhhhhh to some people but are actually a awesome idea. Like the battery charge feature this makes absolute sense to me, having the device manage the charging. I put my phones on charge at night to be ready for the day ahead. However this isn't the best thing to do as we all know, so Sony takes the problem away. I am sure I am like most people, I use my phone until its time to sleep and I want my phone ready to go with 100% battery in the morning. Well done to Sony, a small thing but a awesome thing.

It's really a shame features like that don't get more attention. They're not "sexy" but every time I show someone an advanced charging mode, or a better battery saver, it always gets a solid reaction. Even non-techies "get" this stuff.
@@SomeGadgetGuy thanks for the feedback. I myself love phones and swap and change all the time. I would love to do your job. I have gone a slightly different route with my latest phone and got the realme x50 pro. I am loving this phone, it does things so well with top specs. Fastest phone I have used. People have turned around and said to me it can't be any good because they haven't heard of realme. I find some of the fancy stuff you get on phones like Samsung actually makes the phone perform worse. Gimmicks sell I suppose.

Unlike other manufacturer are delivering some existing features from others. Sony did contributed a lot in the past such as water resistant, stereo speakers, ldac, side mounted fingerprint, eye AF. @@SomeGadgetGuy It's still strong and is actually built like a tank, the battery is still giving me 7-8.75 hr SOTs. I haven't seen any new phones recently except this that really shows granular camera control and great out of the box image color. Also no more black and white sensors from Huawei :'(
Yeah. Huawei crushed it with dual sensor, but now that we have more options for larger sensors, it kinda balances out the advantage of multi-camera capture.

GCAM is pretty much available for every Android phone in the planet, but Sony's camera app, which gives off natural and almost unprocessed images, cannot be found elsewhere.

What phone can you recommend for gaming and movie watching for a budget I have metropcs so would have to be unlocked 300$ at most used is ok
My current phone is still doing great but Sony and LG are my options if I decide to upgrade eventually. Always underrated options.

Which one did you find had the better audio quality wired and on loudspeakers?
@@truthseeker.3 honestly, i could not tell much of a difference between the wired experience. Loudness I'd say, slightly went to the V60. Quality though went to the xperia 1ii. I felt like I had a nicer phone with the Sony. It was an overall fancier experience
Eagerly waiting for it's comparison with cameras of iPhone 11 Pro max, Samsung S20 ultra, Huawei p40 pro +, LG v60 and one plus 8 pro!!
Do consider making a video like that cause it'll generate loads of view...in it'll be difficult, but also amazing!!
8:57 I think the option would be nice, as pressing a physical button shakes the phone, and you need stillness when using low ISO trying to get the most out of the small sensor in lower light. I hope it has a timer at least

Very informative review. I think the Sony camera phone design with the buttons only on one side of the phone stems back to their Sony Ericsson Satio 12mp camera phone back in 2009.

JuanBagnell I’ve no complaints. Still very happy taking photos and filming with my XZ Premium and Xperia 5. I think with the Cyber-shot range of cameras in sharp decline (excluding the RX series) Sony are now rightly ‘focusing’ their attention to the smartphone market. This is where mass market photography now is.
Can't even buy Sony in Australia anymore but still so cool watching your reviews... Kinda want one but of course I do just because I can't have it

1. Is the Cinema pro only able to shoot in 16:9?
2. Is the sxreen recoding option only for game mode or I can also toggle it elsewhere?

1. It always shoots in cinema 21:9 aspect ratio, but there are grid line guides for 16:9.
2. It works for as long as you use Game Enhancer on other apps. You can pretty much make every app work with it anyway.
3. No, only the main camera can.
Sooo.... is there going to be a followup at some point? The phone has been out for over a month now, and the updates to the camera apps are in my opinion awesome.
