Yes, except the A7III isn't as convenient and portable as this phone, and definitely doesn't have the insanely fast camera capturing and autofocusing capabilities of this phone. I'd say reserve the mirrorless for special events, because this phone is basically more than just a handy mini mirrorless camera in your tiny pocket, as it can even be a great mini professional film making camcorder, so it's essentially a two-in-one tool with quality reaching the passing standard even if not as good as the two gadgets.

Wow, this is a great and articulate review that seems to GET who this product is for whilst is still very fair on its drawbacks. Amazing job guys and especially your Chris.
It is obvious. HDR is not used all the time because the software has no idea what kind of photo you plan to take. Photo Pro blocks HDR when you select burst mode 20fps, because image stacking is only for standing subject. HDR easily messes with colours. Galaxy , Pixel and Iphone are the ones more distant to real scene, the ones with more HDR applied.
At 9:02 - 9:06, I felt that. If we can draw an analogy between the cars and the phones, Sony would definitely be on the manual transmission. It requires some bit of skills to pull it off but its fun to drive shifting gears to your liking without the computers calculating what gear ratio you should be at what speed. It's the same here. You can rightfully claim the image you capture to that effect is really yours, not some AI who do it for you.

Highly unlikely. Eye auto focus is Sony's bread and butter in the photography world, there are others out there that do it, but they are no where near as accurate and fast!
Good job engadget. Finally good product and good reviews of Xperia 1 II. The high speed shutter is cool but I can't remember the last time I've needed that , and needing to break out a manual mode Everytime you want to get a competitive shot, alot of the times a photo can't wait for that ...
the most important thing at this time is the camera resolution which is not present in this phone at all and the battery is very small and the phone gets hot while making a movie and the hands get burnt while playing games.
I'm waiting for the Pro model for that sweet HDMI port so I can get rid of my big heavy camera field monitors. Sony is making smartphones great again. The headphone jack truly is the cherry on top.
I would’ve definitely taken a bigger sensor on the lenses for better detail and clarity, even if it means the autofocus wouldn’t be as good. Also would’ve taken a 1440p display, if they could’ve made it a bit brighter. All in all though, there are three flaws with this phone (those two being, and the lack of 5G being the other), compared to lots more with every other phone on the market. This is the only android phone I’d consider buying, and if sony can make this phone better via firmware updates, I’m all in.
This was a grate review but If I am not mistaken they forgot to mention the HDMI in that phone has that is use mainly to use as a screen for your camera and review footage but can be use for other stuff to and is a pretty unique feature.
I started with a Sony phone about 20 years ago - just for the camera. I've been searching for years, for that experience again. Just decided to throw in the towel with Samsung and Apple and order one of these!
That 2k 120fps slow motion video of the cyclist is probably the best slow motion I’ve seen, other flagship phones slow motion is so bad , it’s grainy and doesn’t look good at all, because they sacrifice quality for making it slower which results in super grainy footage that doesn’t look good at all

And for those who didn't know... IPhone cameras have Sony sensors :) up to this day! CONGRATS to Sony for the new ❤️ Xperia 1 II ❤️ crushes the competition hand's down!
7:08 - I highly disagree. I have the Xperia 1 II, and the selfie camera is the best out of any other smartphone I've ever had! Some people are just nitpicky with certain things. When it comes to photos looking natural, the Xperia 1 II is better than my Xperia XZ Premium. Even Lewis from the Unbox Therapy channel liked the front camera, he said that the camera background in a Sony phone is finally paying off, and I agree; with the Xperia 1 II, in the background of the front camera, you literally get next to no grain at all.
At 4:45 so you can adjust the background blur intensity and focus point using Google Photos? No other reviews mention about this. Anyone with 1 II can confirm this feature?
Maybe if they make the Xperia 1 III screen size to be 6.4" or 6.35" or even 6.3" (instead of the super tall 6.5" display of the 1 II), then there will be more space to put in a better selfie camera, and even some facial recognition sensors. Don't make it too small, though, the more compact screen size of 6.1" of the Xperia 5 II makes the phone almost the same width as the width of my Nexus 5 4.95" 16:9 screen - too narrow for me. I'm not into selfies though. As long as it's comparable to my Galaxy S9, I don't have a problem. I have a problem with the Xperia 1 II not being offered in dark midnight blue, however. The Xperia 5 II has it, why not the 1 II?
I think Sony missed the mark with this one. It seems to be aimed at photographers. But the thing is anybody who cares about those pro features are most likely going to have a proper Mirrorless or DSL are anyway. I shoot with Sony cameras professionally and if I’m going to take the time to dial in settings I’m going to do it on my actually camera instead. What would have been more useful is integrated support between the phone and alpha cameras. Things like being able to use it as an external monitor, quick RAW file transfer or a screen that is Super colour accurate and actually good for editing on Would have been better. I was so excited by this phone but will now be skipping it for the note 20
More and more people have advanced cameras. This is the future. Ppl are on their phones all the time. Plenty to play around with camera settings. Click and shoot is the past.
I hate when reviewers always complain about standard apps and not try a photo pro in proper way, Sony know they sell in niche market (people who want to have fun with manual mode), but specs reader reviewers always complain not like Samsung/iPhone / pixel

@@sasorishino seriously SG?, because if you from Indonesia, the importer come with HK phone
The best review for this machine. Conglatulations 🇧🇷
I'm watching this on my Sony Xperia 1 II bought since last Halloween of last year and I must say, SUPER WORTH IT!
I hope that type of eye auto focus will come to other manufacturers. That is some amazing tech to have in your pocket.
Highly unlikely. Eye auto focus is Sony's bread and butter in the photography world, there are others out there that do it, but they are no where near as accurate and fast!
Looking forward to mine next week to start making content and of course, take advantage of that 20 fps capture AF!!!!
The cyclist shot is very artsy, it's like a campaign ad for a product. Heck, I might buy what he could be selling.
Thanks
finally someone give justice to this phone
Actually the photo pro app has hdr, just turn it on in the settings. Also it's not available while using continuous shooting.
Mind blowing. That motorist photo..
Good job engadget. Finally good product and good reviews of Xperia 1 II. Most testers dont understand this device and even Auto mode is too dificult to manage (photos looks not good... at least on polish sites). On my channel there's a video and link to Google drive with real samples from Xperia 1 II. Device for people with a childs soul.
Wonders never cease, an Endgadget review that does not hate hate anything except Apple phones. WOW a positive review from biased endgadget.. we are entering a new era indeed :)
The high speed shutter is cool but I can't remember the last time I've needed that , and needing to break out a manual mode Everytime you want to get a competitive shot, alot of the times a photo can't wait for that ...
Exactly, an average user does not even know how to tweak the pro mode. Sony should have given the auto mode some software tricks like pixels.
It does have auto hdr. It's in the pro app
can't wait for this release!!! this will be next upgrade
Your review made justice for this kind of phone.
My favourite brand ❤❤Sony❤❤
Finally. Someone gets it!
the most important thing at this time is the camera resolution which is not present in this phone at all and the battery is very small and the phone gets hot while making a movie and the hands get burnt while playing games.
I'm waiting for the Pro model for that sweet HDMI port so I can get rid of my big heavy camera field monitors. Sony is making smartphones great again. The headphone jack truly is the cherry on top.
Yoo how are going to take that epic photo and not state the SS, ISO or white balance? That picture is amazing!
Good reviews, honest and fair
Thanks for the detailed camera review! 👍🏽
This particular model has no HDMI port. Sony will be releasing the Xperia Pro in the near future and that's the one with HDMI.
I started with a Sony phone about 20 years ago - just for the camera. I've been searching for years, for that experience again. Just decided to throw in the towel with Samsung and Apple and order one of these!
That 2k 120fps slow motion video of the cyclist is probably the best slow motion I’ve seen, other flagship phones slow motion is so bad , it’s grainy and doesn’t look good at all, because they sacrifice quality for making it slower which results in super grainy footage that doesn’t look good at all
Fun facts about Sony phones

CONGRATS to Sony for the new ❤️ Xperia 1 II ❤️ crushes the competition hand's down!
Why compare this phone against the pixel and the iphone every time? It is in its own league.
if you have trouble in brightsunlight shooting photos its simple.there ARE more controls than the ISO you know. CHANGE THE SHUTTER ANGLE duuuuh!
see kids, megapixels are nothing when we compare cameras. 12mp outperforms any smartphone camera today.... sony is pure quality
I thought my phone is acting up when the audio was out of sync. Until I read the comments then I feel safe 😂
Heads up, there is a sync issue with the audio. It's pretty out of sync at around 3:41 for me.
Hmm. Sound doesn’t sync for this video?
This a camera not a phone 😂
7:08 - I highly disagree. I have the Xperia 1 II, and the selfie camera is the best out of any other smartphone I've ever had! Some people are just nitpicky with certain things. When it comes to photos looking natural, the Xperia 1 II is better than my Xperia XZ Premium. Even Lewis from the Unbox Therapy channel liked the front camera, he said that the camera background in a Sony phone is finally paying off, and I agree; with the Xperia 1 II, in the background of the front camera, you literally get next to no grain at all.
nice review.
Nice review but the Audio en Video is not sync correctly in this review.
I hope it will come to Indian market..
At 4:45 so you can adjust the background blur intensity and focus point using Google Photos? No other reviews mention about this. Anyone with 1 II can confirm this feature?
Yep, that's exactly what I was doing!
Nokia Lumia’s had this 6 years ago, good to see it. I can confirm it works on portrait shots taken with the standard camera app on the X1ii.
It looks like a light field tech.
I liked your burst shots but when will someone do astrophotography with that phone😓. Nice review btw
I like that old school bike
Is it a Peugeot or Panasonic??
Anyone else experiencing synchronization trouble between audio and video here?
Is this review done with the latest firmware/software with the new night mode?
Maybe Sony and Google should partner up. Sony can make the Hardware and Google can make the software
My daily phone no regret it awesome to me.
I was so excited by this phone but will now be skipping it for the note 20
does it have face unlock, album widget and smart unlock as previous XZ family?
More and more people have advanced cameras. This is the future. Ppl are on their phones all the time. Plenty to play around with camera settings. Click and shoot is the past.
Will the camera pro app be available on Xperia 1 and 5 via software update?
Will this be available in the Philippines? I wish it'll be available soon.
You can buy it online through Expansys but I think VAT will apply.
Is the audio out of sync on this video?
yes it is haha
damn that night video looks solid.
can we program pre sets for faster use when we need it?
Finally something that might take my beloved Nokia 808 out of my hands.
2020| Best Camera Phone 📸
Best Display- 4k OLED HDR
Is it only me or is the audio track not synced properly with the video?
I hate when reviewers always complain about standard apps and not try a photo pro in proper way, Sony know they sell in niche market (people who want to have fun with manual mode), but specs reader reviewers always complain not like Samsung/iPhone / pixel
