TRUCKING 101, Tips for new drivers: Scaling and Balancing a Load

- Here's a few tips on how to balance your load when you pick it up at a shipper. If you use these tips I show you in the video, you should be able to scale and balance your load faster and put more miles on the odometer.. Any questions, feel free to drop me a comment...
Depending on which direction you slide the axles, each hole you slide will shift approx. 300 lbs. For example, if you slide your tandems forward 4 holes, you have shifted 1200 lbs from your drives to your trailer axles. (4 holes x 300 lbs/hole = 1200 lbs). Hope this helps.

You guys are great! I really appreciate all this info. Thnx
Thank u, thats helpful
Always slide tandems toward the heavier weight
My trainer must have explained this about 100xs. It just didnt register in my head. Thanks to your video, it's finally clear. Thanks a million!
That makes one of us.
My trainer never even mentioned it.
What a shit trainer.
And I passed my upgrade test.
So in 3 days they're sending me out on my own to drive solo.
And I am completely clueless.
Am I nervous?
Nah.
What could go wrong.
@@kriskringle6173 You should have requested a new trainer.
Wow, you need to be a teacher lol thank you so much for explaining everything so we all can understand it.
Great job on explaining to us that didn’t understand any of this stuff.thank you for your video
Studying before going to school. I have heard/ saw many, even my fiancee wasn't able to get clear to me. Thank you for writing it out, pen and paper black and white always helps with No confusing explaining.
Wow! I've never heard of that trick with the rivets. I always calculate with the holes. Neat trick!!
That is a wonderful drawing. It is at once childlike and wonderfully accurate.
This video was so helpful for me! Thank you! It's a blessing to come across nice, helpful truckers.
You are very welcome! Thanks for watching.
Great scaling explanation! Also fuel plays a part on the drive tandems.
you gotta best video i have ever seen in youtube to help me out as a new driver
I appreciate the compliment sir! Thanks for watching!
Man PERFECT video!!!!! This video just saved my life. Thank u my brother 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
You're very welcome sir. Thanks for watching!
Thank you very much! The information was so helpful. Appreciate your time on this. Thanks again
coming back after a few years off. just looking at backing and refreshing stuff on youtube. this video is well done and simplifies this perfectly. thank you.
Man you balanced the hell outta that load. Jeez. That's why loads under 38k is the best bet. 40k max is what I plan on hauling.
As long as your drive axles and trailer axles are at or below 34000 lbs you are legal. Sometimes the way a shipper loads the trailer makes it next to impossible to balance it out perfectly. I had a load that weighed in at 34000 lbs exactly on my drives and 31500 lbs on my trailer. Although it wasn't balanced, it was still legal. Hope this helps.. Thanx for watching!
Out of all the videos ive watched, this is basic, straight to the point and perfectly explained.. Thanks brutha....
Nice info. I worked for the railroad (now retired). My office kept tabs of the intermodal shipments. Much cargo would come into Long Beach & transfer from ship to rail for movement to Chicago. Once in Chicago it would often go over the road to an Indiana or Ohio receiver. I know that the drivers would usually have the load scaled before leaving Chicago for the East. Often they would have to shift the tandems. Thanks for explaining how that works!
You’re awesome man great video it’s extremely helpful and nice n simple! Unfortunately my OTR trainer was really unable to teach me this because he kinda guessed with it.. 6 months OTR training with him we never hit a scale not once! Not being negative.. the guy must known what he was doing because we never got a ticket! Now I know the process though, thanks!
You're welcome sir. Thanx for watching!
Thanks. Very clear presentation.
Great info, specially the hinges and marks from inside out the trailer to know where your 45k lbs should be with your load. Thank you brother 🙏🏾🇺🇸
Thanks LowlyTraveller - that definitely clears it up. I appreciate your response and your videos!
Yo this is the best advice ever! Been trying to figure it out with other videos but yours made a lot more sense. Thank you!
Depending on the weight of each pallet, they may load a few singles in the middle to balance the weight better. I was unable to see how they loaded this one. And yes, you can slide your tandems forward of California bridge and be legal in all 50 states. California just doesn't want the tandems farther than 40 ft. of the kingpin. You can be closer to the kingpin if you want. Hope this helps.
Great video, nice and easy, I saw many videos before this one, and I tell you what, some a hole up there are making everything look like it’s hard and complicated, this was perfect, you only say what we need to know as new drivers
Thank you
Good job and great vid driver!
look who's here : )
Thanks for all those advice. I will appreciate if you can make a video about winter driving ( black ice ,snow, rain ,wind).and if possible to talk about the engine Break ,safe speed, and proper way to break.thanks again
Thank you very much for your information I had a horrible night last night try move my tandems this helped out thank you
Thanks for the info. Straight to the point.
What a great video, I also work for Knight Las Vegas division, keep making more videos and keep up on trucking.
Very good information.thanks
Enjoyed your vids. Been driving a while but you gave good clear concise info. Keep going
Great explanation bro be safe out there
The tip about putting the tandems under the end of the load was helpful. I picked up some beer in Houston, TX and the weights were pretty dang close to even when I weighed it.
I'm guessing you picked up a AB. They do a pretty good job loading there. Usually if you set the tandems at California Bridge you'll be spot on. It worked for me anyways.
Awesome video, thanks!
Thank you! Fine info...
Real big help. Thanks
Just the best explanation what I found on RUclips.
Than you, body !
Igor Silkin you're very welcome.
you are the best! I was in trouble to understand it but now I'm good. thanks a lot
Excellent, excellent video sir.
I've run into that problem last week with the mudflaps being ripped off. Apparently the yard dog hit the curb too fast with the trailer and ripped both mudflaps off in the process. Needless to say I wasn't happy. Concerning the diesel as a lube, I have a can of PB Blaster I carry with me in the truck, and I also heard that dish soap works well. Thanx for the advice.
Thanks for the TIPS Driver ... Be safe out there.
Good video .. new driver here.. thanks for the info...
Are those air lines??? Haha.. good job bro..love it

+jose martinez Some trainers are in it just for the money. To them you are just there to run miles and make their paycheck bigger.
What about 45,400 pounds ?

i just started cdl school.. great vid, thanks...
cool vid I have just completed my in class and this cleared all that up for me
Thanks
This video is PERFECT!!
There's one thing you didn't mention in this video concerning weight distribution. That is how much fuel you have in your tanks. If you pick up a load with close to empty tanks you have to remember the added weight of the fuel you get. Just a thought from a driver of O.T.R. of 10 years.
iMmarkyMark

Thank you!!
You're welcome sir. Thanks for watching!
@@TheLowlyTraveller and a new subscriber to boot. I'm sure I'll be asking a few newb OTR questions.
I'll answer them to the best of my ability. I don't drive truck anymore. Been off the road for 5 years.
Sometimes I gotta play with my fuel tanks sometimes take chains off of tractor, that's cutting it close.
I haven't had to do that.......yet. The way I see it, if I can't run with full tanks of fuel, then the load is too heavy.
Nice vid
thanks, now can you put a video on the flywheel, how to slide it an ect...
