You and I distribute weight difficulty. I would move your 5th wheel 3 notches forward, and move the center of the load 1' to the rear. That should make your weights close to 11k, 32k, and 37.

Very cool on the explanation I’ve always wondered how you drivers balanced out you load. Remember when you picked up done plastic piping. You put a cover on the front don’t remember the name you called it sorry but I was driving and went on I280 from HWY61 and a driver was parked on the on ramp with a load of pipe out of Wilton Ia or at least it was blue like the pipe they make. Long way around to ask a question but is it a law that you should cover the front of the load like you did or was the load requested to be covered that way? Last question you not over on your weights but do you run your route differently to go around any chicken coops? Traveling in the early morning they maybe closed anyway. Thanks for the upload!!!! I'm not Dan, because Dan is the man! But I know the answer to ur question. What ur talking about is referred to as a smoke tarp. They r used for various types of loads, but u see them mostly on pipe loads. The ideal behind the smoke tarps is to keep the exhaust from the "smoke stacks" from getting inside the pipes... U may have noticed alot of trucks now dont have stacks, but rather have what we call grass burners. With the emissions in place now, the exhaust has to go through filters now, and alot of trucks just have the exhaust pipes turned towards the ground right under the truck. Grass burners, because the exhaust is still hot, and can burn the ground underneath. Smoke tarps are usually required buy shipper/receivers, not really required by law, however, of coarse there is are a small number of states that to require them i think, and I have heard Michigan is one of those states but I'm not sure.
I can scale 48k with my 48 foot trailer, so I look at it as 1k pounds per foot. If I’m over 3k on drives I will move the product back 3ft. Just an example!
i always kept my 5th wheel in the center of my drives. maybe it was a silly thing but when pulling the pin on the 5th wheel you didn't get so dirty, if your tires had mud or ice on them.
Even split at the middle is a rookie move. You can carry 6k more on the rear, so it only makes sense to go 1 or 2 feet back from the middle, and consider that the middle of the trailer, and split there.
I'm used to weight distribution on a C-130 Hercules. Arm x weight = moment. Knowing our weight distribution was obviously much more critical. But I'm surprised truckers don't have a similar way of determining the exact center of gravity for the truck once it's loaded to ensure it's within the envelope.
They roughly cost $30k additionally to add the "side kit". So if you are not tarping or doing LTL tarped loads, it's not worth it financially. It also bars you from doing certain loads.

No, you can't exceed the 80k GVW, but, being able to redistribute the weight is very handy, sometimes - like this load. Gives you more flexibility. On this load if he didn't have the spread axles in back, he'd have to move the load forward to get both sets of tandems at 34k or less. The disadvantages of the spreads; more tire wear and harder to back unless you can lift one axle. WIth both down you don't know which the trailer will pivot on in a backing turn.
In usa if you have a spread axle over 10ft apart (10ft 1 "), they're 20k each and you CAN pay more for your license plates and go over 80k pounds. I used to pay for 84k pounds on my spread axle flatbed. Some states make you stay on Interstate if over 80k

i'm a flatbedder who doesnt have to tarp my pipe and steel how do you know if your straps got loose if you got the tarp covered it ?? I guess u an pull over and feel em but still I like knowing if one of my straps need tightening from looking in the mirror. My warehouse they load like crap so I usually pull over after driving 10 min and check re tighten my load

Yes they do. I was like Dan kept the wheels turning I had Karen for a load coordinator we worked very well together especially on staking loads to keep me moving and when I couldn't stack loads we both watched the load boards and we made it work
What's the range on that drone? What happen when you get close to it's max range? My last 7 loads been north of 45,000 need to give my truck a break with some lighter loads
with that spread axle your allowed 40000 20000 per axle but can still be nabbed for overweight if one of the axles goes over the 20000 even though your under 40000 one axle can be 22000 the other 18000 still overweight

How much does your truck and trailer weight when you are empty?

When I tighten my straps I bear down on the cheater bar until I hear something crack, and back it off 1 notch on the winch. Simple. :)
Why do you have to tarp that metal roofing, it is made to sit outside for many years, so i guess it would survive the trip on the trailer :-)

Question Dan why don’t flat bedders use those curtain side trailers instead of those tarps ?

Basically you need to have some type of air system on the truck or trailer for this to work.

What is the max legal weight again for your front axle? If you said 12k, you're wrong. It's 20k...just like any single axle.
