NEVER get out of the tractor without setting the tractor brakes, EVER!
Hell I've done it basically my entire time driving, now my new truck I don't have as much but still do it sometimes, don't be a chicken
@@gagemoorhead4144 I’ve seen wayyy too many trucks roll off and hit something doing that . I used to do it as well but definitely not safe driver aha
It's very, very simple.
Slide the 5th wheel toward the light end.
Slide your trailer axles toward the heavy end.
If you're heavy on the drivers & light on the steer, slide the 5th wheel toward the light end, to the front.
If your heavy on the trailer tandems and light on the drives, slide the tandems to the heavy end, to the rear.
When sliding the 5th wheel if you have air suspension, lower the landing gear ( dolly down) till the feet just touch the ground then dump the air. Now you have no weight on the 5th wheel and it slides very easily. unlock the 5th wheel, move as many holes as you think you need to, lock the 5th wheel, re-inflate the suspension and raise the legs back up. Generally there are two types of sliding 5th wheels. Ones with the holes closer together shift about 250 LBS per hole, ones with the holes spaced a little farther apart move about 450 LBS per hole. One time shifting and paying attention will tell you which you have. Same with trailers there are some that move about 250 LBS per hole and some that move about 450-500 LBS per hole.
In this video he is figuring about 250 per hole on the trailer, see time hack 4:36. He is figuring to move 750 pounds from the trailer to the drivers. His trailer is 34,560 now. If he moves 750 to the drivers the tandems will be 33, 810. His drivers are at 32,480, if he puts 750 on them they will be 33,230, close enough. Actually moving 4 holes (1,000LBS+/-) would be closer. The trailer would go from 34,560 to 33,560 and his drives would go from 32,480 to 33,480, within 100 LBS front to back. Better balance gives a better ride, more balanced braking, better handling around curves, more even tire wear, and other advantages.
It's so simple you just wrote an entire book about it 😂
I was always taught to slide the axle toward the weight. If the trailer was heavier than the drives, you moved them toward the rear. If your drives were heavy, you slid the tandem forward. I never had to move the fifth wheel. I was probably lucky in that respect.
I'm not even a trucker, but that whole process was explained in a way that makes total sense. Nice video.
Appreciate this video Jerry. I've been using your videos a lot lately to get a better understanding of what I've gotten myself into.
Thanks for the tips!!!! New to sliding tandems here!!!!
I picked up chalk for my tandems! Thanks for the tip!
I am a new Schnieder Driver, this is helpful. thanks man!
Yea sorry. I don't care if the trailer brakes are set or not. You set the tractor brake when you get out.
I often found that looking out the driver's window at the ground was the best method to gauge how far I had slid the tandems when I was trucking. I often would pick a particular piece of gravel or mark in the pavement to use as a gauge. I would over shoot a lot less when I did that than when I just guessed at it. Just a suggestion if drivers are having trouble getting them in the spot they want them in.
God bless you man, good tips !
Makes me appreciate my straight truck!
Redimix truck 72k loaded, just have to dail the tag axle pressure to the yardage I haul.
You really need to set your tractor brake when you get out. Even though you have the trailer brakes set, the truck can still move if the tractor brake is not set. Remember slide towards the problem. If the problem is the drives, slide towards them.
Thanks this is so less confusing!
Great job explaining
Like the t-shirt Jerry .... mine arrive the other day here in Austria
Great video thanks
Great video.
Nice video Jerry
Awesome Video As Normal Jerry.
Our trailers are 6” centers. One hole is approximately 400 lbs. fifthwheel is approximately 200 per single hole
over 4000 power units in the US and 400 power units in Canada not a small company and they do seem to have a lot in the Eastern half of the US but one of their biggest lanes runs between Canada and Mexico with stuff going into Mexico being the largest as we have 3 terminals in Texas alone
I love your videos lol
Thank you
ya they are heavy trucks my other one I had the 5th wheel all the way back but this one it's 3 notches up I believe and you saw the steer weight in the video
thanks dude I just upgrade doing team I'm a trucker now I follow your video since training what your digit if I need help with tandem
Yup! EVERY time you have to adjust the tandems.....
that's what I said in the video and what I did My weight was on the tandems so I slid the tandem towards the rear of trlr taking the weight off my tandems and putting it on the drives
I just started driving but not sure where I should move it to.. err.
Thanks a lot
we do lot's of stuff coming in and out of the rail yards as we send lot's of our trlrs to California and to Mexico as far as dedicated no not really just the Chrysler but there is a waiting list to get on that
glad it made it
Hey Jerry, Have you noticed your prostar being heavy on your steers? I drive a 2013 prostar and even with the tanks under the sleeper I had to move my fifth wheel back as far as I could go to stay under 12,000 on heavy loads.
Good video
Welcome to Ontario
maestro!!!
Wow, great video and you're very patient..now I understand why to bring chalk. Thanks!
Marcy The Hookah Smokin' Caterpillar check this out to make it very simple to line those axles on the 1st time everytime.
Kwick-align @ Facebook & youtube
So does any regulatory agency ever check the scales to see if they're giving readings anywhere close to reality?
When I was looking at the Celadon website it looked like the most of the terminals are Eastern USA. Never heard of the company till I started watching your channel.
Their main terminal was off of Post Rd. in Indy.
Clear as mud
Man that's a workout
Do you guys celadon. Have dedicated runs here in Chicago but I don't want to drive here in the city lol but yeah do you have any ?
Fuel
Damn, wish I'd watched this sooner, would have saved me a third re-weigh. Of course I did the rookie thing and did it bass ackward, Thanks Jerry,
They are for sale $10 + s&h
I sometimes see trucks with two pins what does that mean it isn’t just one ?
Hi Jerry, just wondering if you got your money back on the 1st scale. Showing the other two, may have reimbursed your 1st weigh in.
Safe drive my friend..
I always try to put more weight forward, so that I’m not dragging it. Think of the trailer like a big sack full of potatoes. It’s easier to pitch it up on your shoulder, than it is to drag them in the ground. 😉👍🏼
The new trucks actually give more or less power depending on weight on the tractor. I try to get the truck tandems between 200 and 1000 pounds heavier than the trailer tandems. That seems to be the sweet spot range.
Why doesn't Celadon use tridem vans ? is it mainly because it is American company and does most of its business on the Eastern seaboard ?
Ok thanks bud
Is that a 48 or 53 footer because if it's a 53 your past bridge la
If you slide the wheels forward you're pushing the weight forward if you slide the wheels back you're pushing the weight back
yeah, im normally setting around 11,800 or 11,900 90% of the time.
I like this guy
What about bridge law in CA
4 “ slides are about 250 lbs 6 “ inch are near 1000. Before you seal your trailer, get inside and see the load placement. 1200 lbs per foot on trailer floor. Why is that hard?
yes all driver should carry paint marker - those new scale box on the new trailer only tell the weight of trailer? Loaded or M T Weight.
akush55 these are for sale for $ 10 + s&h
I learned that is not unusual and is probably due to the scale shaking. If the variation is 100 lbs or less that is acceptable.
I'm gonna get my CDL permit soon. So...soon as you get your load from the shipper, you gotta go get weighed because the shipper just loads it and doesn't give a crap about axle weights?
Yup. Good shippers have an idea how to load properly but loads can differ a lot.
❤
Seeing that,
I'm so glad we just run tri axles on most of out trailers here in Australia. You don't have to worry about fiddling round with shifting the axles and turntable (fifth wheel).
aussiestumpy you can get a split axle trailer here basically the same thing obviously minutes on axle
did you get off the truck damn
nice video. do you have to pay for al the scaling??..and what did the wheight after you slided the last time??...intrestning videos im watching from sweden i drive a timmbertruck with a loadcrane on..but im think off try to get a visa to Canada and drive there...so i hope you understand my english?..im gone subscribe to you channel too*L*..so i can bug you whit questions hehehee

It's very important to know how many pounds is each hole.
f'd up'd love it
Don't put your parking brakes on while weighing read number 2 in the directions on the cat scale directions
If no chalk available, do it old school style. Count the holes, write it down , work it out, no chalk needed.
So is there a cost every time you go through the scale?
Johnny Chingas $11 first weigh, $2 for each reweigh after that.
Megan P Thanks Megan P
Johnny Chingas check this tool put I created & designed as a driver of 16 yrs & trainer of 6 yrs. They are for sale $10+s&h
yup company paid for all
Hey great video how do you how much the holes are 400lbs each or ? Thx
Gonz 565 Kwick-align.com @facebook/youtube
not sure where you got the idea they do most of there business on the eastern seaboard cause it is not true and all the trailers are US plated and have to be able to go anywhere in Canada, USA and Mexico
How far can you legally drive after getting loaded to a scale to adjust the weight
To the nearest scale.
@@Bendigo1 what if that scale is a hour away
@@Artlopez105 if it is the nearest scale it is the nearest scale. Unless you have the scale built into the truck. If you have a scale 10 miles away but its the wrong way so you chose to got to the one the other way but is 60 miles thats on you. But if there is legitimately no scale nearby all you can do is go to the nearest scale. If you are pulled into a weigh station you tell them there were no scales and you were going to the scale they should give you a chance to weigh at their scale.
Ok thanks
@@Artlopez105 your welcome hope it helps. Good luck.
You never showed your final weigh
How much weight each whole
250 to 400 depending on the trailer and the load I usually calculate 275, it works 99%of the time.
You need to explain why instead of just saying slide five holes.
yhx
Great Vid Jerry, I think you should go back to being a trainer......lol
all the scales are off. weight limits are only a road tax
Id tell the scale guy not to scale till I get out and make sure you have very little fuel.
Never! Scale your load, unless you're tanks are full,
Oh ya guys, one extra very important thing NOT TO DO WHEN WEIGHING.
*** NEVER PULL YOUR RED TRAILER BRAKE HANDLE, BECAUSE IT WILL SCREW UP YOUR TRUE TANDUM WEIGHT (sometimes up to 1,000 lbs) SINCE THE SUSPENSION AIR BAGS DROP DOWN.
Think about it, when you roll across a dot scale or down the road, your air bag SUSPENSION system is fully filled. So why in the hell would you pull it on a cat scale or a dot scale ????
What’s this “too quick on the button” nonsense? You think the CAT Scale company would set up their scales to rely on someone inside standing there watching for some cue to manually press a button to finalize the result? They would surely automate that.
Kwick-align.com @facebook/youtube these are for sale.
Man you must have wasted a good hour plus just doing this smfh
Super trucker dumb stuff.
Downtown which way you going to slide backwards for you don't even say oh we got to side back three more four
