    Great discussion. Dave Rat did a pretty good video a couple years ago where he opened up the X and M and talked about the differences.

    Yay! for the shoutout to Neutrik. I built all the patch cords and mic cables in my studio. Nothing but Neutrik. Hands above the rest.

    I had two X32 racks and got two DL16 stage boxes. I sold one of the racks and bought an M32C. I like that combo. This was a great video, thank you.

    Awesome video, laughed my a$$ off while you were talking about the plastic boxes, and the young un’s not realizing how it could be. I love the in your face sound of a good point source system. I run Martin audio wooden boxes and I am sure you know how much fun it is to mix on a well built analog system

    I’m a Presonus guy and I’ve been wondering your thoughts on it so thanks for sharing. You only mentioned series one and RM series, check out series 3, it’s a huge step up for them, I love it! I have the console and rack mixer and have never had a problem.
    Anyway, future topic idea would be Power. I noticed that little distro back there and I’ve seen it online and pondered getting one. How do you tie it in? Ever ran one on a generator?
    Oh and a shop tour! Let’s see it all!
    Thanks!! Really enjoying it!

    The goal is to make the most money with the least investment that will do the job. I used to own Digico's and now I use M32's and a wing with dl32 and dl251 stage boxes.

    Love your ideas about the 32channel rack. Just add an HDMI out so i can see all the meters if i want. The app works great, sometimes its just nice to be able to see that spike

    I have the same relationship with Allen&Heath as you with Presonus 🤣 A friend's bar's QU16 crapped out, got motherboard and PSU replaced under warranty, then again after two more years (6 weeks downtime every time). Sold it immediately after the second repair. GL2400-32 made trouble during a live gig (open air, 100 degrees high humidity, I live in China near Hong Kong) the master module started distorting in all sorts of places. Also SQ5 needing several reboots during soundcheck ... On the other hand, an X32 mixer is surviving since 2018 in a jazz venue that goes from piping hot and humid to freezing cold almost daily, 5-6 shows a week and flawless until now, but it doesn't move. Drum hardware in that venue is rusty 😂 M32 and X32 rack are ubiquitous here too, especially the Midas full size M32 and the C, very sturdy and extremely common with local pros. Had one M32C survive while in its flight case forgotten at the beach overnight during a storm, sea water and sand got inside but it wiped off nicely and worked without issues. That venue did lose the majority of a Meyer Sound system that night however. I saw the system in storage the next day, not sure how to salvage that.
    I completely agree with you that a good analog speaker system is much easier to work with than the plastic box stuff or Chinese knock-offs, but I wouldn't discount all the Chinese line arrays either. Some are indeed crap, but ZS for instance sounds quite good out of the box, often paired with M32s by pros here, they have excellent service in China and are reputed to be robust and durable while obviously a fraction of the cost of a D&B or Meyer system, the latter mostly being found in government funded projects where money seems to be no object. Our local opera house has a Lawo console that nobody knows how to use, basically no mics, a D&B line array system and acoustics of a concrete warehouse, governments know the way🤣
    Also don't discount the Chinese XLR connectors, they're improving every year and there's some good ones, although I agree that the Wing rack with it's probable high price should get Neutrik. I really hope for a Wing core rack, that big display and controls on the huge Wing rack will surely price itself too high vs the X32 rack. But I did work side by side on M32C and Wing, Wing definitely sounds nicer, and FX are way better.
    Greetings from Zhuhai !

    Where does the M32R stand in terms of being rider friendly. For many years I've been mixing on the SI Impact, and it's been a good mixer since I've had it, but I'm trying to build a turn-key system with mixer, mics, and IEMs all in one case. Obviously, I'd have to buy a box designed for its high profile.

    • @thegrumpysoundguy

      Most of the Riders I see will only accept the full size M32 live. But it depends on how bad the artist wants the gig. I’ve see a few making really good money mix on whatever was there. lol. Money talks.

    I own an X32 Core because it's a cheap way to get into OSC programming for the X32/M32 - wrote a meter bridge & mute sync (sync mutes between consoles - useful in broadcast).
    On a side not the massive 10 year warranty the M32 had silently disappeared. The support from Midas has evaporated.
    I'd probably get an SQ today primarily because of the increased bus count & more onboard inserts & actual support from A&H. Particularly when locally (AUS) the M32 and SQ are basically the same cost wise. The X32 still makes sense on the low end - the flexibility & SDP curb stomps anything else at that price point. Is the M32 & X32 a bit long in the tooth? Yes, particularly in the routing and DPS department. Is the platform close to it's end? Well it's closer than the SQ but the M32/X32 and the rest of the AES50 eco system will be around for quite some time.

    What if you need more than 32 ch? Like for a studio set up. What do you suggest for a studio mixer with at least 48 channels?

    • @thegrumpysoundguy
      @thegrumpysoundguy  3 месяца назад

      Unless you’re recording orchestras, I don’t know many studios recording more than 48 tracks at one time. So 32 channels could easily work in a project studio anything bigger than that is going to have really nice and probably old analog mixers in place such as Rupert Neve consoles.

    If you care about longevity and are using the hardware more than virtual control get the M series instead but the x32 Rack is robust and well capable I use two of them with dell touch monitors the only difference is the preamps but they still run through the same converters and DSP you can upgrade the sound by going Dante or adat and using studio quality pres and converters instead

    I would also say that if the point of reference is x32/m32, they don’t how good it could be. Unless mixed on better digital consoles like Midas pro, ah d live, Yamaha dm you don’t know

    I had to use a presonus 24.4.2 ai this weekend. I hated it. It was super glitchy and I was not a fan of the eq or compression. Definitely made me appreciate all the X32/M32’s I’ve mixed on.

      I had the first series 1 console then got two RM and had 64 channels with that setup. Used it in that config for a particular band that had 60 inputs.
      That thing was great and the only reason I got rid of it for the x32 rack is they stopped supporting it.

    Hello, hello..
    without any doubt, absolutely no doubt, M32 (in any of its versions) is superior and better in everything than X32..
    in audio quality (the X32 preamps are not Midas as many people still believe), and in construction, better faders, better connectors, stronger and more resistant construction, etc etc..
    I have had an M32R since 2017 (it works perfectly..!!!!) and with that mixer I have done and do all kinds of shows, small and large, small events and giant 1st division festivals, without any problem or any objection or acceptance by anyone..
    here in Spain, M32 is an industry standard..
    I would like to add that, however, the X32 rack version (with DL 32 from midas) is the most used as a monitor mixer.
    even more than M32C..!!!
    it is the most used monitor mixer by everyone here, (from a tablet or a laptop or even from the front controls of the X32 rack.),
    X32 rack is a standard as a monitor mixer in mid-range shows, at least here in Spain.
    greetings from Spain..

    I'm one of the guys that commented about the X32 and no one should be buying one at this point. And I absolutely have had a high investment in gear I'm not some guy with little to no gear. I used to own digico D5 consoles. My beef with the x32 is the age overall and the build quality. Thats why I wouldn't buy one at this point even though I have owned 3 or 4 of them. Now I would buy m32's over the X because the build quality is better. I still own and use M32's all the time but I have had them a long time. At this point they are old technology as in processing power compared to what is current. Hey just my opinion that's it.

    • @AlecSpence
      @AlecSpence 3 месяца назад +1

      What a complete load of balls. X32 isn't trying to be a D5, and is nothing to do with that market.
      No idea why being a 12 year old design is such an unbuyable prospect. If 32 in, 16 out is sufficient for you, then the "ancient design" is fit for purpose. Especially at the price, which remains a transformational feature.
      Grumpy Soundman's point of asking how many times paying punters have complained about shitty 12 year old 48kHz X32 is it.

      Do you think anyone in the audience of a gig where an X/M32 is on FOH duty, is standing somewhere thinking “That mix sounds like it’s coming from old technology…” Nope. Only big headed engineers seem to think the highest of high end gear matters.

    • @AlecSpence
      @AlecSpence 2 месяца назад

      @@jakegodman Not at all. The key thing X32 does is offer a decent IO count at a bargain price. At X32 launch, its price hugely undercut LS9. There's nothing remotely near X32's price. Doesn't stop the pricier competition being the right choice for many situations, but X32 is still king where budget is low.
