Haven't read the many comments but have a recommendation to lower the compacted compost a couple of inches below the top of sidewalks and driveways. You want the mowed surface of the new lawn to be level with the concrete. Also this avoids ponding issues when the turf is above the concrete.

Well, I think Sacramento has a lot of heat in the summer, like I have here in Texas. You might get consider doing what I do. I have bermudagrass growing in the spring and summer, and it lasts even into the fall. But when weather gets cold and the days get shorter, bermudagrass goes dormant and turns brown for the winter. For me, That’s the perfect time to overseed the lawn with perennial ryegrass. That way, I can have that beautiful green color until it turns warm again. At that time, I can spray out the ryegrass and let the bermudagrass come back to life.

Great idea on how to level the soil. Will be installing KBG sod this Spring and will want to get it as flat as possible. I mow below 1" with my Liberty 43. I also have the Earthwise 7 blade , Fiskars and Great States mowers as well and I was using the Earthwise daily and The Allett on the weekends so I could stripe. The Earthwise was the best of the 3 manual reel mowers to me to minimize the washboard effect and if you mow in multiple directions they do go away. I have a small lawn so it's easier to do that. The short answer is yes, but it depends. I would prefer to mix in some better soil with the cheap stuff, then spread it around. If you can find a way to enrich the soil with some organic matter, or even mix in some manure or compost, it will help improve the soil much better.

Great tips, and great informative video. I will use this technique myself. I'm a subscriber now to learn more tips about lawn repairing and levelling. I was just wondering two things:
    1. Do you compress the soil in some way afterwards to make it more compact or just leave it as it is. Just wondering about footprints and sinking when walking on the new grass.
    2. Do you fill in the gaps in the soil in some way after removing the pipes. Would love to see you in action doing this, since yo seem to do everything in a smart effective way.

    • @jasongarringer12
      @jasongarringer12  3 года назад

Thanks for the kind words! Yes, it’s necessary to go back over the soil with a lawn roller to press down the soil. I also wet the soil (lightly, no pooling) to assist with settling. Also, after removing the pipes, I filled the gaps with soil and rolled the area with a lawn roller. Thanks for subscribing!

I love your tricks of leveling. I wonder if you know what soil to mix for lavender plants and rosemary. I am in the Bay Area. My rosemary plants die very easily even in a big pots.

It could be something other than the soil. Too much, or not enough sunlight? Too much water? Too much fertilizer? It’s hard to make a recommendation.

I learned something which is nice. You did yours when there was no lawn. What if I have an existing lawn that’s just real uneven. And I live in the northeast. Pennsylvania

I would mow the grass as low as you can before you add the soil. Some say to completely scalp it down depending on the grass you have. Mine was more of a renovation, so any grass I had was scalped prior to putting down the soil. . That tree in the front yard did most of the work of shading/killing out most of the grass. What kind of grass do you have right now?

Now I have a mix of zoysia and fescue. I continue to put fescue seed down hoping to kill the zoysia out.

I would say, if you’re willing to keep up the overseeding with fescue, I would mow as low as possible and also dethatch before putting down soil. Zoysia is prone to a lot of thatch build up. I know it’ll be a lot of work up front, but the lawn will be level AND you’ll be giving those seeds a great seedbed for maximum germination. Mow low. Dethatch. Remove all the clippings and thatch. Level the lawn, then overseed and water.

Also I forgot to mention a couple of the reasons why you want to mow so low: When adding topsoil over existing grass, part of that process is to work the soil into the lawn until the grass blades poke back through the soil (so the grass plant doesn’t get smothered.). If the grass is too long, it will just lay over under the weight of the soil, and it will be harder for you to get the blades to stand back up and work the soil down towards the roots. Hope this helps!!

Did you take videos for when you did the rotary and reel mowing?

Sub'd! Man, that was some work! Do you rotary or reel mow? Wondering how the top soil with sticks/twigs works out if reel mowing.

Thanks man! Appreciate it. Since I planted perennial ryegrass in the front, I bought a manual reel mower just to see how it cut. I bought the 7 blade reel by Earthwise off of Amazon. It has pros and cons but overall it works fine since I’m not cutting below 1-1/4 inches usually. Go any lower and you’ll see the washboard effect. The twigs and sticks have stayed put below the surface of the grass, so no issues there. I have bermudagrass in the back yard but I cut it mostly with a rotary mower.

I live in Florida and in order to keep the water away from homes in our community when we get hurricanes, there is a small valley between each property. No more than about a 6 inch height difference but it made all the difference when that filled up with water In the last two hurricanes, and all that rain stayed away from my house.

Great video Jason, even holding relevance and quality well after initial posting. We are in the process of looking to regrade/level off areas of our yard. Did you do anything to remove unwanted grass/weeds prior to putting down your 50/50? We have some imported grass the previous owner plugged in one section of our yard that needs to go, just trying to determine best way to go about tackling that while also leveling out other surrounding areas as well. Would appreciate any thoughts

Thanks! I did scalp the lawn prior to regrading. I’m also familiar with the turn and burn method, where you can mow it really low (super low/scalping) first. Then, spray everything with RoundUp herbicide for a total kill. This works well as long as you wait a few days before planting the seed. Just follow the RoundUp herbicide label. This option is best suited for major renovations. Only thing I did before seeding was apply a preemergent herbicide that wouldn’t interfere with perennial ryegrass germination.

Great video! About how much does a truckload of top soil 50/50 run? I was thinking about scraping up some dirt from my woods area. Its super soft and full of years of leaves and stuff.

In my area it was around $300 USD for 5-6 yards of material (delivered.). I think soil from a wooded area is a great idea. just make sure you get some of the underlying soil in the mix with the decomposing leaves and other organic matter. The subsoil will help provide structure to the mix, and you will have less settling over time.
      Thanks for watching!
