19:31 I noticed he didn’t do Mikey and his weapon but Michelangelo got the nunchucks because he’s actually the most naturally gifted at being a ninja but he doesn’t really like violence and likes fun so doesn’t focus well. Nunchucks are really inefficient weapons but Mikey not only is gifted enough to use them effectively but it also helps him focus and have fun while doing so.
I love the idea of the Foot Clan in this. It's not just a ninja group, it's a cult luring kids in with games and food and friends to train them as ninjas. Awesome, but also kind of terrifying.
That is something that is not really shown when it comes to other iterations of the shredder. This version of him, adds reverence To the idea of being a ninja for this clan. That the mask is worth more than anything money could buy. You really think about the things that he had asked of them. It’s not really that ridiculous that people would just listen and follow. Steal this take that. It could very well have been things that they were already doing before they were taken in. Go after a news reporter? She’s reporting on them making the public aware they exist that’s dangerous for them so of course they would need to silence somehow. There are these creatures that have been stopping us. All they needed was the order from shredder to go after them. Critics try to say that everybody who works for the shredder are a little crazy because they don’t question going after a bunch of giant turtles. But truthfully, once you get rid of the unusual of what they’re going after why they’re going after them makes sense for their organization . And there’s another thing to think about. Essentially, this is the story of two rival ninja clans clashing, It isn’t some grand superhero story, shredder isn’t about to enact some planned to take over the world. He’s the clan leader of us, New York City sect of ninjas that are just stealing anything that isn’t bolted down. It’s kind of refreshing to have a surprisingly grounded plot.
Also fun fact: before she started work on this Judith Hoag was working on Cadillac Man with Robin Williams. And when she told him what she was doing next it turned out he was a big Ninja Turtles fan so he gave her some information about her character that she said turned out to be very helpful. Just one more way that wonderful man shaped our childhood.
So big, that his daughter, "Zelda" appeared on 2012 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (as Mona Lisa) and 2018 Rise Of The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (as Karai).
If i remember correctly she also looked down on this role back then which ironically ended up being her most popular role by far..shes obviously embraced it since then
When they were hiding out in the farmhouse, it was actually Mikey who yelled for Splinter on the roof, not Raph. It was supposed to continue his arc about not wanting to even consider the idea that one day they will no longer have him around. When Donnie tried to talk about it, Mikey changed the subject acting like he didn't care. But that moment on the roof of the house, and a deleted scene where he was training in the barn, was supposed to tell us that Mikey is the one struggling the most from Splinter's absence.
Turtle 🐢 Power !!! & here are a few fun facts: - All of the actors inside the turtle suits make cameos in the movie like Josh Pais (Raph which he also did the voice of) was a taxi passenger, Michelan Sisti (Mikey) plays the pizza delivery man, Leif Tilden (Donnie) & David Forman (Leo) both play Foot Clan Ninjas - Judith Hoag didn’t like this role including the idea of the iconic yellow jumpsuit, but actually Robin Williams (a huge TMNT fan) helped her by telling her everything about April - Jim Henson helped out with the turtle costume’s & puppets
On the subject of non GPS pizza delivery: You had a clipboard/packet that had a map of the area your store delivered to, usually black and white with numbered sections marked off, for each of those sections you also had a smaller map that was blown up to display just that section. For example one order might be in Section 3, so you drive to the section three area, then use the section three map to locate the street, then drive to the street, then locate the house number. Most people in the day would have a porch light on or something to help you find the house, but it was recommended to purchase a spotlight lamp so you could shine it on the house to see the numbers from the street for safetly.
I was always shocked when the pizza guy managed to find my house back when I was a kid. We lived in a literal marsh/swamp with no landmarks, street signs, or lamps. But the guy always found us. I still don't know how he did it.
All of the suit actors for the mutants have cameos out of costume. Mikey’s is the Domino’s guy, Donnie’s is the lead ninja who attacks April in the subway, Leo’s is standing behind Sam Rockwell when he’s talking to Casey Jones, Raph’s is the guy in the cab in the first Casey Jones scene and Splinter’s puppeteer and voice is the guy with the umbrella who walks over the sewer when Raph screams.
Fun fact, tho the Ninja Turtles were huge during this time with cartoons and toys, no major movie companies would agree to making this movie. So this was actually an independent film and was the highest grossing independent film until it was beaten by The Blair Witch Project
3:40 - The thing with the suits was that they kept trying to make them more and more similar to the cartoons. There were actually people who felt that the original suits from the first movie were "too scary". 4:22 - There's a Domino's near me that still has the big map of the area on the wall near the back door the delivery drivers use. By "big map" I mean 4-foot by 6-foot poster size. There's a deleted scene where Shredder walks into that big meeting hall and sits down, has has the four guys who failed to mug April attack him, and fights off all of them without getting up. You can see one of the guys in the background holding his injured arm when Shredder gives the new gang member his Foot Clan mask.
HELL. YES. This movie had no business being this amazing, yet here we are. The best part is that it's mostly based on the OG Turtles from the 1984 comics.
(At 16:05) surprisingly I actually like the idea that "Raphael" was the one jumped by the foot clan instead of "Leonardo", because this gives Raphael more character development to grow.
Dude THANK YOU for bringing Idle Hands to my attention. I never heard of this movie and looked up the trailer and now I'm dying to see it, I would totally watch you guys react to that movie
I've always felt like Splinter's line "All fathers care for their sons." can almost immediately lose its weight cuz, yeah there's a lotta folk out there that shouldn't be having kids, but I always interpreted his words as "You are only a father *if* you love your children."
I was 10 when this came out, and my sister and I got to go to the theater by OURSELVES! (She was 9), and theater was filled with nothing but kids. It was insane
(At 7:45) I don't remember who played Raphael in 1990s, because I was born in 1990, but from what I read when Raphael took the trash can off his head, the actor who played him in that suit broke his nose.
It’s interesting separating Hamato Yoshi and Splinter in some things Not just here but the 2003 tv series and Michael Bay films. These times Splinter started out as a rat and not a man But this is the first I’ve seen Hamato and Splinter both together at the same time
This is how it was in the original comics, it was the 90's cartoon that introduced the idea of them being the same, I believe both to simplify the backstory even more, but also because that way they remove the murder from the backstory as well, making it less violent.
The song as the building starts to burn is so good. Elias Koteas is also the hands down MVP, literal Casey Jones perfection. No one will EVER top him as the character
Fun detail that some people miss, but when Casey and Donnie are working on the truck together at the farm, and they keep insulting each other...they are insulting each other alphabetically. Vocabulary lessons, NYC style 😂 Also, this soundtrack slaps hard.
You know you guys would probably love the movie Batman vs the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Yes there is a movie with a Batman and Ninja Turtle crossover and it’s epic. Leaving this here as a recommendation.
I'm sure a lot of what I'll mention has been said. The puppeteer of Elmo is Splinter. There's very obvious ADR in this film that makes me believe this film was originally rated PG-13 and had to be edited so kids could see it. Tatsu clearly killed that Foot Soldier, but the coughing was dubbed in with someone saying he'll be alright.
I think my favorite 'fact' of this movie is that they use the actors that are in the suits in different roles. The Dominos Pizza man is Mikey, Raph was the passenger in the taxi he flips over, Leo's is one of the gang members, and Donny's is the person who slaps April.
Jim Henson might have been proud of the suits but didn't like this movie cause he was one of those that thought it was too violent. Also , one of the creators of TMNT (Kevin Eastman) has said he prefers part 3 over part 2 but to each their own, I liked them all, still do actually . The first movie is a nice mix of the comic and the cartoon. Second one is more the cartoon while 3 is back to comics with some cartoon.
(At 7:15) they did the same thing on the anime series in 2003 and 2012. Raphael gets jumped by Casey Jones and loses to him because he loses his temper.
I never get tired of watching these movies, the third one included. I’m at the point where my memory ain’t what it used to be, but I can still quote quite a good amount of this movie. It’s why I probably can’t watch it with anyone, because I won’t be able to resist talking over almost every line .
In the original cut, after the antique shop battle when Tatsu beats the shit out of that student he actually kills him. Also when they first show shredder, he fights 2 of the foot that failed there missions and takes them to near death all while sitting, the clips are on youtube and the bluray.
fun fact: this was one of the first acting roles for a very young sam rockwell. he was the guy showing the kids around the hideout and told the cops where the hideout was in the end. yep. this movie had a future oscar winner in it. also, in various continuities, the turtles do have sex with females of other species: other mutants, aliens, dimensional beings and humans. yeah. they got it on with regular human women.
2:08 apparently Judith Hoag was real difficult to work with and was rude to the stunt crew so they had already planned to replace her almost immediately. 5:06 I use gps so if I want to go down a different road or stop someplace off the beaten path. Also lately Waze has added a ghostbusters theme where your car can be Ecto-1 and the voice is Ray Stantz that gives you tips and lets you know if your car is possessed. My daughter loves it when I use it.
the opening about the Twin Towers reminds me of last year during the NBA playoffs, ABC aired stock footage of New York before a Knicks/Heat game and it had the Twin Towers in the background... the Knicks were so infrequently in the playoffs that the networks refused to reshoot any timelapse footage
Is there a community post incoming about this change of scenery? It actually caught me off guard, and I'm now noticing some recent videos on this channel adapt to this new setting. Glad to see you guys are getting more comfy.
27:35 is my favorite part of any TMNT property. The head going down into the shell indicates to the viewer that these aren’t just ninjas that happen to resemble turtles, these ARE turtles! They don’t do this sort of thing often enough, in my opinion.
fun fact: my mom worked for the Jim Henson company for a very long time back when we lived in los angeles...but anyway she worked on the second movie for this series, as well as many other Jim Henson properties, like Muppets, dark Krystal, labyrinth, etc ^-^
Also I learned something to actors from this movie return to the 2012 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, everyone doesn't like. Corey Feldman (Donatello) and Robbie Rist (Michelangelo).
I love the nunchaku showdown between Mikey and that Foot Ninja. But the scene that will always hit me in the heart is when the Turtles are sitting around a campfire, and they get a spectral message from Master Splinter. Fun fact about Master Splinter: He was puppeteered and voiced by the same man who originated Elmo on Sesame Street, Kevin Clash.
One of my ALL TIME FAVORITE MOVIES. This film is PERFECT as an adaptation and amalgamation of the pop culture turtles and the original Mirage comic TMNT turtles.
A RUclips channel called Gaijin Goombah has a video on some of the Shredder content cut from this movie that has roots in legitimate ninja practices. It was super cool. If I can find the OG video I’ll post the title in the replies.
3:09 "i feel like there would be a more efficient way to do that" If you're referring to Raphael throwing the sai, a sai is actually a throwing weapon.
Fun fact: Tatsu appeared as a boss in 2 of the TMNT games for the Sega Genesis (back when companies like Konami had to make separate licensed games for individual consoles due to the rivalry between Nintendo and Sega, i.e., Turtles in Time for the SNES got rearranged levels and some different enemies like Tatsu and became The Hyperstone Heist for the Genesis)
Fun fact 1: The whole 'getting ambushed and beaten by the foot and thrown through April's window' is actually Leo's thing. In the original Mirage comics it was Leo, and in the 2003 and 2012 series it was also Leo. I wonder why it was changed to Raph for this though. Fun fact 2: Now I don't actually know if this one is true, but I heard that the shot with Raph screaming onto of the roof at the farmhouse was actually supposed to be Mikey. Mikey was supposed to go through this whole anger arc at the farm house, but it was cut and edited so it was Raph instead. So if the bandanna on Raph, in the roof scene and punching bag scene, looks a little too orange, then that's because it was originally Mikey.
It makes more sense for it to be Raph..he's the hot head who likes doing things alone, like..makes him great target for foot. Leo being responsible would be someone who stays around to keep watch on others or take someone with him. Cause he knows it's better to stay together..But they're teenagers, so the fight between him n Raph makes sense and someone like Ralph could get under Leo's skin to make him say things he said..thus he feels the most guilt as failing as a leader and most important as a brother, when Ralph is hurt.
Oh my God dude...I remember Saturday mornings, sitting on the floor playing TMNT on Nintendo, in my TMNT pj's, eating TMNT cereal, out of my Leonardo bowl (with Trix color changing spoon). The marketing force was strong with this one. This story bears repeating: My brother and I went to see the original movie when it came out as kids (7 and 9?) Afterwards we were looking down the sewer drains to try and see them on a rainy night. 30 years later...he and I went to see the special anniversary theatrical release. It was absolutely amazing nostalgia. As far as your "Liberal Cities" go. This was filmed mostly in North Carolina
You guys. Thank you for reacting to this movie!! Off topic: I GOTTA know where you got that Ginormous Appa plush that's between you. My best friend will LOVE it
if you watch the 2012 TMNT series (highly recommended), they do an episode where Donnie becomes frustrated using just a bo staff and tried to tech it out, but it backfires on him, leading to the realization that his mathematical mind is what makes the staff so effective. Mikey used nunchakus because they used sweeping motions, which complimented his breakdance-style capoeira, and Raph used sai because he could reverse them and use them as brass knuckles for his brawling style.
Their colors match their personalities as well. You rend to see that in a lot of things. Certain colors represent certain characteristics. Blue is usually nice, red is hot headed and etc.
So I really think yall should react to the 2003 TMNT show as it would be right up your alley. Lots of action and story especially through season 5. The last two seasons aren't as good but are still awesome. I don't know if it's been suggested or not but it would be awesome to see you guys watch it
TMNT was my absolute favorite thing as a kid. i had all the toys, shoes, everything. and i knew every line from these first three movies. and every song and dance move from their Coming out of their Shells Tour, anyone remember that?
Shredders defeat here is pretty good in my opinion. When Splinter called him out not only was his name revealed, something he clearly intented to keep secret, but also that his old rival was still coming back to haunt him because Splinter knew his masters techniques. After everything that happened previously and now this Shredder snapped and let his rage consume him which ultimately led to his own downfall.
This movie was my childhood and introduction to the turtles. I never knew it was being very faithful following the same beats to the comics. Not only that, but every single event in this movie has referenced itself in other renditions of the turtles in a way. (I've also grown accustomed to the early 2000s TMNT cartoon) What bothered me was that this was the one turtle movie apart from the other three films, that they used their weapons for fighting. Parents made complaints about it being 'too violent" so the 2nd and 3rd film toned it down with the use of weaponry
Requiem for a Dream - Jared Leto, Jennifer Connelly, Marlon Wayans Vanilla Sky - Tom Cruise, Penelope Cruz, Cameron Diaz Eyes Wide Shut - Tom Cruise & Nicole Kidman
I was born in 1979 in Queens New York, off Jamaica ave and 212 st. i was a child in the 80s.. we got robbed at knife point for my pizza, and another time we got robbed coming out of the chinese food spot 2 blocks away at knife point for $14 in change.. them cats had a knife to my throat.. my cousin STILL wants to find them dudes that did that us.
There are a couple documentaries about the history of tmnt and the making of this movie. It's one of the most accurate comic book movies out there with only a couple minor changes.
I've always had a theory that Mikey is definitely the most skilled of the group and that he only pretends to be dumb in order to get his opponents to underestimate him.
I had never heard of that weapon theory, thats sick! But you never mentioned why Mikey used nunchucks? My guess is that its to counter his high energy and distractability. Give him a weapon that requires a lot of focus to use properly...
He is also the most naturally talented of the brothers and least prone to violence, so the weapons that are more about leveraging skill and finesse than pure lethal power are a perfect fit.
I don't necessarily think Donnie was boring, he was just really smart. He had the mind to do a whole lot with a little, hence the staff or whatever he used. He was also the tech, invention and gadget kid.😁
To me, this Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie from the 1990s IS THE BEST ONE! Watched it when I was littel and I still love it to this day! It will always be the best one with the best ending rap song! TURTLE POWER!
Such a good movie. Probably my favorite TMNT movie. Even my mom enjoys it. And yeah, it is full of minor things that eagle eyed viewers can spot. Like the actor's faces in the Turtle's mouths. Isn't there also a guy just crouching in April's apartment in one scene of this movie? Or is that the second one? I remember noticing it when I was younger and being really confused.
I always like to see if anyone recognizes Sam Rockwell is the Thug leader for the non-ninjas. You might know him from Galaxy Quest, The Green Mile, Charlie's Angels, Iron Man 2.
@@greato80 it wasn't until years later that I realized that the actor for Keno was the little kid in 1985 Red Sonja staring Brigitte Nielsen and Arnold Schwarzenegger.
OMG, I'm the same with GPS. But I still learn the area where I live so I can at least communicate how to get from place to place...I will still have google maps or wayz up with my phone in the vent clip holder and hooked into the BlueTooth of my car, but yea I can get around without it if I had to, now would it take me hours to get somewhere that shouldn't take 30 minutes? Maybe. So I tend to rely on GPS more. But that's usually when I don't know where I'm going at all.

fun fact: this was one of the first acting roles for a very young sam rockwell. he was the guy showing the kids around the hideout and told the cops where the hideout was in the end. yep. this movie had a future oscar winner in it.
also, in various continuities, the turtles do have sex with females of other species: other mutants, aliens, dimensional beings and humans. yeah. they got it on with regular human women.
I still have all three movies on the original VHS tapes and I'm never giving them away!
(At 19:50) That's only three two turtles. You didn't mention why Michelangelo has the nunchucks.
😂 splinter came on the roof with the straight 8 mile line. "He think he a shredder? His real names Clarence."
(At 24:20) What are those things made of, 50 lb of lead?
I love how in this movie Splinter is the one that comes up with the famous cowabunga catchphrase, then he laughs like an old man.
That was a great touch and how they saved it for the very end!
Love how Ralph hugs Splinter in the end while others celebrating.
One of my ALL TIME FAVORITE MOVIES. This film is PERFECT as an adaptation and amalgamation of the pop culture turtles and the original Mirage comic TMNT turtles.
Dudes and dudettes, major league butt kicking is back in town!
I like how all the turtles were raised in New York but only Raphael is the one who has the accent.
Am I in the minority in that I wanted a hangout like the non ninja teens hangout? Half skate park half game center, all no Fs given.
A RUclips channel called Gaijin Goombah has a video on some of the Shredder content cut from this movie that has roots in legitimate ninja practices. It was super cool. If I can find the OG video I’ll post the title in the replies.
3:09 "i feel like there would be a more efficient way to do that" If you're referring to Raphael throwing the sai, a sai is actually a throwing weapon.
grew up watching it and love it
Fun fact: Tatsu appeared as a boss in 2 of the TMNT games for the Sega Genesis (back when companies like Konami had to make separate licensed games for individual consoles due to the rivalry between Nintendo and Sega, i.e., Turtles in Time for the SNES got rearranged levels and some different enemies like Tatsu and became The Hyperstone Heist for the Genesis)
PLEASE DO BATMAN VS TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES, PLEASE!
I got that movie when it came out, and I still rewatch it to this day lol
(At 12:45) Oh man you cut out the part where they come back crying, after losing their father.
(At 8:35) is there a difference between getting jumped and getting mugged?
I had to come to the comments as soon as I heard Ruff mention a possible Idle Hands reaction to state that I would totally watch the hell outta that.
19:58 the Turtle/Weapons combo was confirmed and mentioned in the comics.
I don't know if it's been suggested or not but it would be awesome to see you guys watch it
This TMNT film hits home for me so much, a household favorite of mine from when I was a kid and still is to this day!
It's always funny to think that Uncle Phil from The Fresh Prince original voiced the Shredder in the first animated series.
The gang member in the white no-sleeve shirt is a young Sam Rockwell
TMNT was my absolute favorite thing as a kid. i had all the toys, shoes, everything. and i knew every line from these first three movies. and every song and dance move from their Coming out of their Shells Tour, anyone remember that?
When the actors I did like the best has to be Corey Feldman as Donatello.
7:25 I swear when I first watched this movie I thought raph said “won nothing” instead of “1/nothing”.
This movie was my childhood and introduction to the turtles. I never knew it was being very faithful following the same beats to the comics. Not only that, but every single event in this movie has referenced itself in other renditions of the turtles in a way.
(I've also grown accustomed to the early 2000s TMNT cartoon)
What bothered me was that this was the one turtle movie apart from the other three films, that they used their weapons for fighting. Parents made complaints about it being 'too violent" so the 2nd and 3rd film toned it down with the use of weaponry
The Suits in this are so great, although I can't look at them again after seeing that one banned commercial
Requiem for a Dream - Jared Leto, Jennifer Connelly, Marlon Wayans
Vanilla Sky - Tom Cruise, Penelope Cruz, Cameron Diaz
Eyes Wide Shut - Tom Cruise & Nicole Kidman
I was born in 1979 in Queens New York, off Jamaica ave and 212 st. i was a child in the 80s.. we got robbed at knife point for my pizza, and another time we got robbed coming out of the chinese food spot 2 blocks away at knife point for $14 in change.. them cats had a knife to my throat.. my cousin STILL wants to find them dudes that did that us.
There are a couple documentaries about the history of tmnt and the making of this movie. It's one of the most accurate comic book movies out there with only a couple minor changes.
14:48 did anyone just get the Darth Vader reference when Schrader said I am your father
Casey was like 'I whoopsie a murder' lol
When Tatsu threw a tantrum and beat that kid up, he was originally going to kill him. They added in an dialogue in post saying he's alive.
I got this on BLu Ray a few Christmases ago. One of the best Christmas gifts I ever got.
If there's any doubts about trapping a spear like that, I did it using my granddaughter's martial art belt, just to prove that point...
I don't necessarily think Donnie was boring, he was just really smart. He had the mind to do a whole lot with a little, hence the staff or whatever he used. He was also the tech, invention and gadget kid.😁
21:14-21:15 That wasn't scripted, but they kept it anyway cause it was like universal karma on Casey
This movie despite its age is still amazing and while I love this movie, the story adaptation that was in the 2012 show is some how even better
The first TMNT movie is timeless. They have to watch the sequel for the ninja rap.
I always like to see if anyone recognizes Sam Rockwell is the Thug leader for the non-ninjas. You might know him from Galaxy Quest, The Green Mile, Charlie's Angels, Iron Man 2.
Yeah I did..also Michael Jai White cameod in part 2 when Keno and thugs being recruited.
I love how Shredder throws a knife into a CRT and it doesn't explode XD
