Great review, I had a newbie question. what makes the defender different from other 4X4? do you have a video that goes through more technical aspects that makes this a "better" 4X4?
There's something misleading on most reviews like this one, all that leather and luxury nonsense is optional, standard you get a screen, plastic, rubber, cloth seats, smaller steel wheels and regular shocks (except in north america where they get air suspension standard).
True. And it is possible to have such a specced car. However, keep in mind that most people will go for a more luxurious spec. Especially if it's someone who is just going to drive around in the city
To be fair to this review, he tried out two versions, top and bottom. The latter with the all spring suspension is more in the low-tech spirit of the original.
@@Nodrog832 You are welcome....and on top of the standard Stainless steal one there is a Titanium version and a Black DLC (stainless steal) one (I have the black one)...like some other guy said: "for the ones who cant afford a RM"
I love the new Defender, and would own one if I could justify it, but you do have to admit that it has given up quite a bit of repairability. The old ones could be fixed with twine and chewing gum, this one will need electronics and air suspension when it goes wrong. That still means that for the vast majority of owners, even some who get off-road regularly, this new one is better, but there is a group of people who will still need the old one... or a Toyota.
Shocking reliability aside which I hope gets sorted out over the coming year, this thing is awesome and I would definitely buy one. Civil enough on road to not be a typically obnoxious Chelsea tractor, yet performs better than the old one off road. Hope we get a 200+ mile EV version some day 🙏
I like the looks, I like the interior and I’m certain and as demonstrated by the video is an immensely capable car. However, Land Rover should’ve called it Discovery and priced it a lot lower. As it is, a few will be pulling expensive boat trailers, some horse boxes but most will spend their life in -laces like Chelsea... sad 😒
Completely agree. I didn't like the new defender to start with but it is really growing on me if I don't consider it the replacement for the defender. As a part of the Land Rover collection is it excellent and I would love to have one, but in my opinion the design of the defender is too iconic to chance is such a drastic way.
I like the new Defender especially the Defender 90 but I wonder how capable it actually is off road and in extreme conditions compared to the old Defender 90 and 110. I’ve seen old Defenders drive through water obstacles with water filling the entire inside of the vehicle and up to the drivers chest and continue out the other side and kept on going. I somehow don’t think this new Defender would do that and keep on going. If it did make it through it all the electrical components would be ruined. In extreme off road situations it’s sometimes better to have the old basic technology over the new high tech systems that are destroyed by water and other things.
That is a course designed by LR 40yrs ago, with a relatively hard base, with mud on top. I don't have that luxury here in S.Island NZ,so rely on my real defender (2013 110 DC ),to get me through the rivers and mountainous country when hunting. I'm not really impressed by lots of electronics in vehicles, especially land rovers,as they are renowned for breaking down.
Yes, gotta agree, have had several land rover products including two much maligned p38 rr which were excellent, yes I have put brakes and other consumable items on bunone have left me stranded, it is really annoying when folks slag off a vehicle they most likely have never owned and moan about it being built abroad yet buy German cars, your spot on, welcome to you tube!!
(Have not read through all comments, so I apologize if this was covered already, but...) Did the front bumper / hood take some damage? There looks to be a bungee cord running from below the bumper to the back of the hood in a few shots.
Would you plz advise, shall i buy brand new X5 or Defender ? Looking for a reliable luxurious car that can do off-roading and accommodate a family of 2 kids , deeply in love with them both which made it too hard to decide :(
Reliability...my 2009 Freelander II was as reliable as a lump hammer...it just worked and you never thought of it failing. The replacement Discovery Sport had a missing rubber seal under the bonnet and the rear entertainment screens (I have probably the only car with that!)needed a reboot at first but since then and at 23,000 miles, it is running well. There is much to read of JLR failures but most is owners failing to get software updates done or simply too impatient for systems to work..and yes, they should be faster but it is easy to simply readjust your thinking. The new Defender...yes there is plenty of evidence that it has had early troubles..it needed to be better but I believe JLR are getting that sorted. I would buy one but not until next year. Remember just what it will do..REALLY DO...it is highly capable and do not be put off by stories..they are no worse than any BMW or Audi...and next year, time to buy! 🙂🙂🙂

I think it's pretty common these days that car reviews will usually be on the top spec trims.
@@naysunhuang Yes, but they should mention that. A base Defender will cost half as much as one loaded with options like this one.
That's a very good point.
To be fair to this review, he tried out two versions, top and bottom. The latter with the all spring suspension is more in the low-tech spirit of the original.
Land Rover did a great job with the retro design (and including a 2 door!!!!)

Great design!
Defender vs Bronco vs Wrangler...I really like the Defender
Excellent
Shocking reliability aside which I hope gets sorted out over the coming year, this thing is awesome and I would definitely buy one. Civil enough on road to not be a typically obnoxious Chelsea tractor, yet performs better than the old one off road. Hope we get a 200+ mile EV version some day 🙏
Good review

Priced up a 90 on the LR website.
£71k.
£71k!!!!!! In your dreams Land Rover.
😂
No. In your dreams. ;)
I am sorry, but I couldn’t disagree more! Drove the 110 and it felt like a Discovery,
So what is wrong with a Discovery ? Have you driven one? .Extreemly capable machine is my D3
I like the looks, I like the interior and I’m certain and as demonstrated by the video is an immensely capable car.
However, Land Rover should’ve called it Discovery and priced it a lot lower.
As it is, a few will be pulling expensive boat trailers, some horse boxes but most will spend their life in -laces like Chelsea... sad 😒
@Robert Johnson try taking a Freelander through those “camelback” obstacles. That off-road performance was the real deal.
Completely agree. I didn't like the new defender to start with but it is really growing on me if I don't consider it the replacement for the defender. As a part of the Land Rover collection is it excellent and I would love to have one, but in my opinion the design of the defender is too iconic to chance is such a drastic way.
Can you fit a Labradog in the back of the boot?
What a machine!
The only issue I have with the new Defender is those back-seats..
They don't get water intrusion !
Brilliant video 👍
I'm just here to read comments about land rovers unreliability.
That, plus - its not a REAL Defender...
@@cmacd8879 Have another toss !!

Drew, an excellent review Sir. The only things I missed were the price(s) and the engine specs, diesel or petrol. Maybe I need to watch it again.
They already covered this in a previous off-road review while test driving it in Africa

That’s a really good review 👍
Wonder how reliable they’re going to be.....
I've never seen so much bitterness and resentment on the comment section. Maybe second only to whenever a GT-R is beaten by a 911.
Welcome to RUclips. It gets a bit much doesn't it. People just want to complain.

Will there be a pickup version?
No
Yes. And a 130.
I really want to see the articulation on the short wheelbase coil sprung version.
Not sure why it would be different? AFAIK it is the same suspension design, all-independent, just one has coils only the other has coils and air.
@@cmacd8879 the air suspension has variable rates and is cross linked
No different than any other IFS IRS like Toyotas and the new Bronco has IFS
Fantastic vehicle
(Have not read through all comments, so I apologize if this was covered already, but...) Did the front bumper / hood take some damage? There looks to be a bungee cord running from below the bumper to the back of the hood in a few shots.
Yaaay a carfection video about the new D90, oh no that guy with 2 watches 🤦🏻♂️
We really want to see Henry when we come here, right ?
Would you plz advise, shall i buy brand new X5 or Defender ? Looking for a reliable luxurious car that can do off-roading and accommodate a family of 2 kids , deeply in love with them both which made it too hard to decide :(
Have you tried the new Jeep Grand Cherokee. It can do the same thing but fully loaded with 4 people on board?
The 90 version looks way nicer than the 110.
Ever has this been true.
its the best looking box I've seen
I like them but Land Rovers legendary unreliability puts me off.

I am a Land Rover owner from way back in the late 60's and the family have had them since the 50's. I'm a great fan. Love the marque to the max. The question I am forced to ask is why it took about 8 different vehicles to produce the 15 minutes of footage. I thought it was the same vehicle until I watched the video a 2nd time.
because it broke seven times
I think some are press videos released by LR, while others are their work.
Great video, I'd really love to have one... But question the reliability, especially with all the electronic systems.
WTF are you thinking .This has coil suspension and no more electronics than any other modern vehicle LOL !

It is a great new version. The electronics and computer systems are still working out many bugs. Do the reliability issues have anything to do with the amount of drinking present in the design and assembly culture? It was an issue with Detroit.
Bloody brilliant. I really want one
Wow, I'm gobsmacked at what this vehicle can do, though a little worrying about the maintenance costs after say 10 years or so 🤔
