    It shocks me how many people have gotten into plants lately and I’m kinda just waiting for the hype to die down so I can go back to my normal collecting. The sudden influx of interest has made buying rare or even uncommon plants insanely expensive. I’ve been into plants since a young age, originally outdoor plants since about 6 and I moved to indoor tropicals around 10. Every birthday I would go to local nurseries and Walmart garden centers to find new plants instead of normal gifts. It saddens me to see people get tens or hundreds of plants only to lose interest or do it solely for the attention. I had to drag some dude who said he couldn’t understand why people collected plants if the rare ones would eventually become common. Like bruh that’s the point of plants you’re supposed to grow them and share with others. I’m just gonna trade on Reddit in the meantime :3

      "YES GIRL! so done with this heteronormative world 🌈🌈🌈🌈" This is kind of a shitty comment honestly. The world isn't heteronormative, it's simply that being hetero is the norm. And before you say it, I don't mean by that that being LGBQT is abnormal. People assume Kaylee is hetero because she most probably is.

    • @NakiLovesCinnamon
      @NakiLovesCinnamon 3 года назад +37

      @@LeMAD22 well just because most people are heterosexual it doesn’t mean that she is. And frankly, us LGBT+ people are so tired of people assuming we are heterosexual. Stop assuming people’s sexuality. Just ask if they have a partner, this makes us feel included. For me people asking me if I have a boyfriend puts me in a position of either having to come out or lie. I cannot just say yes as if they ask “do you have a partner”.

      @@LeMAD22 Saying that some marker is the norm based on a probability-distribution doesn't deny the heteronormative-statement. based on the fact that people think it is okay to just assume that everybody falls into the category of the majority (whatever that majority refers to) is what enables people to feel marginalized and deviant from this norm. Being done with the heteronormative norm can just simply mean being done with people not doing the extra-work to respect and include minorities in their first-assumption-pattern thinking

    • @rosvokisu
      @rosvokisu 3 года назад +20

      @@LeMAD22 "being hetero is the norm" is literally the definition of heteronormativity. Whay you don't seem to understand is that heteronormativity is incredibly toxic to gay people in so many ways. Technically yes, more people are straight than gay, but you still shouldn't think that it's ok to just act like everyone is straight until proven otherwise, because it makes us invisible. It's incredibly hurtful to say that, because it also implies that we don't matter and heteronormative thinking is ok just because straight people are the majority. That is othering. Stop othering us.

    • @mathilda6763
      @mathilda6763 3 года назад +3

      @@LeMAD22 you're treating a word that basically means "being hetero is considered the norm" like a swear word...it's not. Please try not to be offended, this is just stating a fact and that it can have an negative impact on minorities.
      Just as it /can/ have a negative impact on left-handed people to be raised and taught by people that don't accept anything else but right-handed children. There's loads of aspects from looks to hobbies to relationship preferences that can make people different and this normativity can be hurtful if it is forced on people with social sanctions, less opportunities or physical harm.
      Of course being not average in some way or there existing a norm doesn't mean that everyone experiences the "I am not like them" in the same deepness. A norm can be soft and inviting like "I expect everyone to speak German until they tell me they don't an we can try to work shit out in another language that we both speak" (because the majority does speak atleast a little German here ) or hard as beton like "that person should leave the country if they haven't learned how to speak my language in a few months".
      It's not an insult that being non-average has an impact, it's a fact. It doesn't have to be a huge life-scarring thing but you sure /notice/ if you're part of a minority.
      Overall it's nice to be acknowledged as a pretty normal person even if you're part of a minority group.
      I mean...people could just mind their own business and try to not assume at all, because what other people do in their bedroom shouldn't concern them as long as it safe, sane and consenting but apparently other people's relationship/sexual preference is still a matter of public concern?
      Which is the point.
      If a person says you "I don't want to talk with you about certain aspects of my private life" (may it be their relationship status, sexual preferences or medical history ) and people still keep asking, assuming and speculating, that's really intrusive and disrespectful.
      People shouldn't do that.
      We should respect their wish for privacy and stay out of their intimate business.
      Edit for typos.

    G'day from Down Under. I rarely comment on anything, anywhere, but I've been meaning to address the whole troll thing to you Kaylee each time you call it out. I'm proud of you for doing so and it's refreshing to hear from someone with very similar expectations of peeps behaviour as I have. I'm mid 40's and somehow been stuck in some form of customer service all of my working life. I've also been on the net since it first started so have seen it's evolution. Arse holes are not unique to the internet, they are everywhere, but they are far from the majority. They are just the squeaky wheel that gets the attention by being so appallingly behaved. Most decent people have lives and feel no need to be trying to gain attention, so their presence isn't as obvious. I've learnt so much about peeps bad behaviour over the years, and they still never fail to astonish me, but I can and do handle it much better now. I have so much to advise on this topic, but as I said I'm not usually a commenter, I've already ranted enough. I will say though, that I have learnt that these O2 wasters, really don't matter. They are so unimportant and have much less impact than you may think. The people that are important to you and your business are not them and won't be affected by them. It's very obvious Kaylee, who you are as a person and what you do, and you have nothing to worry about. Stay true and you will continue to have great success. Cheers

Just like the plant craze in the 70's, it will die and the only ones left behind will be the real plant lovers who will get today's "high end" plants for pennies on the current craze's dollars. Real plant lovers will always love and own plants.

    It’s on Facebook and run by my friend Lacie - Unicorn Plants UK (Buy/Sell/Trade/Chat). She left other groups due to their exclusivity. This group is inclusive, she’s made it a safe place for sexual assault survivors (can you believe there are plant groups that aren’t safe for them??) and it’s just so positive and kind ❤️

    Giiirl. The painted plant scammer got me too! She sent me an empty box and I was DRAGGED through not only the group I was in (which admin blocked me immediately) but also in a bunch of groups I wasn’t even in. I experienced the full toxicity of the plant community during that time and it honestly made me not want to take part in any more plant groups anymore. I’m still blocked from even that group from the admin and they never apologized to me because they were dragging me also. So I’m totally on your side. I appreciate you calling them out. The drama needs to stop.

    I hate gate keeping but that insta post was infuriating. I hope that all those people were vegan. And to add if any of those people are reading, you have know idea what people are thinking when they make decisions. None. It might have been second hand. Some one deciding to get a fur coat might give up meat for a year to offset their own feelings about it. If someone wants to own a leather or fur anything, it is their personal freedom to do so. And if you think there aren't negative impacts caused around the world by your fashion choices, then you are mistaken. If you would like to learn more you can check out the fashion transparency index. This is put together by a group of "fashion activists" that are trying to grow the conversation about sustainability and employee welfare around the world in the fashion industry.

    Question. How do you inform someone that they're purchasing an overpriced plant unknowingly without it coming across as price shaming?
    I'm not for the shaming but I have seen many times when new plant people are overly excited and get plant happy and sometimes purchase a plant (when it's apparent they might not have the knowledge of the general market price for that plant) and end up buying a plant inflated 2.5x. and you want to let them know from an honest place that they are possibly being ripped off?
    Hope you know what I mean.

      I tend to message people directly, if I can be bothered, when I see things like that. My view is still generally that how others spend their money is up to them, but of course you can't see someone running towards a cliff and not at least giving them the knowledge that they are, so they can make their mind up.
      Generally though, I think it's more productive to provide people with information beforehand, and to raise community knowledgeability is a better approach than confronting sellers directly. Of course you can do both, but an educated and well informed community won't need you to fight their battles.

    • @aniaariadna
      @aniaariadna 3 года назад +2

      I think you don't because what if they really love the plant they bought and don't really mind the price? Not everything has to be the optimal price. This has not happened to me, but I have seen people fall in love with a specific plant and buy it, even if they could get a cheaper price for maybe a smaller/less high quality plant. Ultimately, it's up to people how they spend their money and which plants they want to get.

    Anyone who knows what fur coats cost (I.e. thousands of dollars) should know that these days almost no one except the ultra rich are wearing real fur anymore. To assume that someone who is not known to be particularly wealthy is wearing real fur just to harass them is ridiculous. Vintage fur is also becoming a popular way to ethically source fur products and there are some climates where it is literally so cold that real fur and other animal products like eider down are the only things that keep you warm. What if it had been real fur and it was a family heirloom or something? People need to mind their own business. Plus, the other thing that no one talks about is that natural materials like real fur products last far longer than synthetic ones, I.e. why people still inherit hundred plus year old mink stoles and coats and pass them down generation over generation. How many synthetic fiber coats ended up in landfills during that time? I understand people are coming from a place of wanting to be compassionate towards animal suffering and I 100% do not support inhumane fur farming practices, but taking that compassion and using it as an excuse to harass someone who is in all likelihood not wearing real fur is just an excuse to be nasty and it’s ridiculous and I’m so sorry that happened to you, Kaylee.

    • @sabrinadeep7154
      @sabrinadeep7154 3 года назад

      you can buy them second hand pretty cheap actually. I think they are horrific cause I have seen the fur industry with my own eyes and yet I have also seen people trade the fur of animals they killed or found for butchering with the first nations people. They are wearing fur and no one cares. Its only if you are affluent that its a problem. The world we live in is very strange!!!!!

    • @DieuwertjeSara
      @DieuwertjeSara 3 года назад

      Thats not true. There's many types of cheap fur and many coats with fur lined hoods for example have real fur eventhough most people think they don't. You can buy real cheap ish coats with real fur without knowing. Now those pimp like fur coats that basically look like you're wearing 20 foxes, yes those cost a fortune.
      Besides that, by wearing faux fur you still popularize wearing fur and this expands the demand for fur, real and fake. Not saying you deserve big amount of anonymous hate for stuff like that, but to people who are very against the fur market this is not "not a big deal" so the anger or offence, while not neccesarily justified, is expected and understandable. It's all based on your norms and values if you find fur a big deal or not

    Hi Kaylee, I can put a date on the beginning of my plant obsession, and it began last week when I began watching your channel. I have since begun my own rare plant collection and taking proper care of the plants I already have. Thank you for being an inspiration!
    As I was watching this particular video, my ears perked up at the bit about your faux fur coat, as animal rights activism is what we specialize in :) We're sorry to hear about the barrage of negative comments you received. It is always proper to ask first and to be regulated in our exchanges with others in order to get the message across properly. The fur industry has been a hot topic in the animal rights community as of late. We finally made the sale and manufacture of new animal fur illegal in California, and the rest of the world is mobilizing.
    Faux fur is a WAY better alternative to animal fur, although as you've now probably realized, it can be so indistinguishable from animal fur at times, that it either sends animal lovers on a tailspin or might encourage people who are likely to purchase animal fur. You were rightfully upset. It's clear that you respect animals and want people to know where your values stand. So for that, we thank you.

    Many people don't understand that the price of a plant isn't just the value of the plant. Price can include for example: shop rent, cost of the transportation, quality of the plant, how much you have to do before putting the plant in sale (grow it, change soil, check out if there's root rot etc. , prune it). People who haven't ever sold something don't understand why the price might be higher or lower even if it's the same product. So next time you see a product with "too" high price, think about it. Think what they have to do before the product is available for you. Also some cases are frauds, people might put crazy prices on products that shouldn't cost that amount of money (Philodendron Pink Congo for example is pretty shi**y example of fraud) BUT I'm not going to explain everything because there is so many sides and opinions.

    Thank you so much for addressing this. I have also been price shamed in facebook plant groups (even though there are rules against that). When someone takes the time to make accusations it does feel like a personal attack, especially when they could just pass if they don't like the price. It's especially bewildering when I know of sellers who have prices 3 times as high and they are not being questioned.
