      I met someone once that paid $4000 for a purse. What killed me is her showing it off. Everyone else in the room was NOT admiring her, they had looks of horror on their face, and she just couldn't get that she was not being admired for being so stupid with her money. The "to each their own, it's their money" is just whitewashing the issues of what is really behind that kind of spending. No one looks up to people like that unless they are the same kind of people.

    Artificially inflating prices by curbing stock grinds my gears like nothing else. Because that IS artificial inflation. That's why I will never pay exorbitant prices for any plant. Won't do it. I'll either wait until that price comes way down or I'll never get the plant. There are so, SO many gorgeous plants in the world that don't cost an arm and a leg.

      Some plants grow slow and die easy and there's work and greenhouse real estate involved. Your not buying the plant, your buying the man-hours and the rent that went into growing that risky plant for months or years. But a fast growing hardy plant? That's rough. Just means I won't get one, because I set a cap on my plant spending... Hopefully all the hobbiests noticing the price gouging will disrupt the market control with competition. I can hope. I can wait.

      @mrparts 3 года назад +7

      @@secretspy44 yes. Many people don’t understand that many of these plants are “rare” simply because they’re not profitable to produce in large quantities. Many grow too slow to reach quality marketable size and nurseries don’t have infinite greenhouse space to wait.

      Exactly what is done with obliqua, they cut the runners up into one node wet sticks, which will take a long time to get going, rather than treat it like strawberry and stake the runner into different pots, while keeping it attached to mother plant! This would be much quicker than removing from the mother and chopping it up!
      I wonder why they do it the slow way? Maybe because it gives the impression this is super hard and slow to propagate, this then drives price up. Shady as!

    This video is so interesting when comparing it to NZ and what's going on here right now. Firstly, so interesting about the ficus.. we can get a full plant for about $50NZD here in New Zealand. It's soo common. But vmon are (were) really uncommon here ... people used to be selling 1 leaf for about $1000NZD or more. We've just had 1 company in NZ release a heap of them like 100s at a lower price ranging from $300 -500NZD and they've specifically said that their intention is to flood the market so they become more common and so the price will come down, and have been begging people not to spend more than what they're selling them for... so really interesting when comparing it to other nurseries around the world who are keeping the price up. But I guess at the same time it's also making them money because they're the only people in NZ who are selling them (other than private collectors) and so they're getting all the money for them as well.

      I'd say it depends on how esthetically pleasing I consider the plant to be. If I decorate a room, I wouldn't consider 50 € much for an art piece or a painting. So why should I consider a plant that I hold in the same regard as a beautiful painting, as less deserving of that price? But only for collections sake? Yeah, than 50 € are too much.

    I bought a medium-sized Shivereana earlier this year for $30 because I fell absolutely in love with it the moment I saw it, however, the feeling does not seem to be mutual. I own many other ficus and rubber plants, I may or may not have accidentally started collecting them, and they are all happy as ever, except for my Shivereana. Within a week of bringing it home, the leaves started getting brown spots, I freaked out a little and thought it might have been given a bit too much water, but the browning continued and a few leaves dropped off. I re-potted it and check the roots and it was completely healthy. The browning continued, although much slower after the repotting, and I recently gave up and cut off most of the leaves that had the brown spots, and I'm still not sure what to do about it. Looking at it now the only thing that seems to be off with it is that on the underside of the leaves, some of them have some red streaks and some just a reddish tinge to the underside. I have no idea what that means and the plant's growth has slowed down immensely. I can't seem to find any relevant info about this plant, since does seem to still be a bit uncommon here in Aus, but if anybody has any info or tips please share! I absolutely love this plant and I really don't want it to be the first one I accidentally kill.
