- Today I give you my thoughts on the Disney Plus documentary series "On Pointe". It follows life at the School of American Ballet, the official school of New York City Ballet. I lived this life at both SAB and NYCB, so I can give you my honest thoughts about it's accuracy (spoiler- I loved it!). Here is my reaction to the show.

Things I loved and appreciated most about On Pointe: THE DIVERSITY. The poise of the students. Brandon (I adore him). They showed the dancers eating multiple times and it was casual and normal, which doesn't often happen in dance shows and documentaries (Spoiler alert: dancers eat and we eat a lot). No manufactured drama - no one was breaking someone else's pointe shoes or being catty or anything else.
I adored every minute and I wish the best for every student featured.
Yeah eat a lot for a mouse maybe🙄 I’m starting to realize everyone has their own definition of words🙄
@@rein7015 ???
I agree SO articulate! I was telling my husband about that. The way the 10 year olds were speaking-I was so impressed!
I know right?! I can’t believe how young and well-spoken they are!
Generation Z and Generation Alpha are more academic than previous generations. We’re likely to be lacking in basic life skills (parents push academics over life experiences like jobs or even chores) , but far more academic.
Literally just having this conversation with my mum as we are watching this too!
LOL! When I was a girl, I knew some ballet students. As an adult, I have also crossed paths with some former ballet dancers. I didn’t notice how articulate they were in the show because to me that’s how ballet dancers talk.
I watched it together with my sister in one sitting. She doesn't care about any kind of dance at all, but she loved the series! It's very inspiring and as an adult dancer it felt like I was living vicariously through the students.
I look up to you so much!!! I remember, before my first summer at SAB, looking through all of your videos! I am so inspired by you!!! Thank you so much for this!🤍🤍🤍
Taela! You are such a beautiful dancer. You have SO much talent and such a beautiful presence. I can’t wait to see what the future hold for you because it is truly bright! So much love! ❤️❤️❤️
Taela and all these "kids" have so much courage. That's what struck me more than anything about the documentary.
I can't believe you are on this video! You were my favorite person in the series! 🙂
hi! i loved watching you on the show! i also watch your channel! you are a huge inspiration to me!
And I feel honored that your share your life with your fans, on this platform. You look like you are happy...and your hair looks healthy. I was worried your thyroid issues would return with the stress of the pandemic. So grateful to see you doing so well!
Thank you so much!
Thank you for your kind words ❤️
You are STUNNING Dominika. You have such a bright future. Keep going girl! You've got this!
@@kathryn_morgan thank you so much!
Dominika, I absolutely loved watching you on the series! I must admit you were my favorite 🥰 because of how poised and elegant you were the whole time! I just don’t have enough good things to say about you and I hope you are doing well 💕💕
@@annalisevezina thank you so much this is so sweet
I'm am honestly so shocked to "find" you here. I binge watched this series because I thought it was so beautiful.
And you were so great all the time. Like so nice and fun and talented and everything. I hope you are doing well.
I’ve been enjoying the series. I loved hearing the input from the ballet faculty as well.
Yes I agree!
On the complete opposite spectrum to this, I'd love to see you react to Tiny Pretty Things (very far from reality I'm sure, but I think it would be entertaining!!) Loved this
I binged watched the first season, as a dancer I loved it!
Katie is so classy I can’t imagine her reacting to that show or even watching such a cheesy drama lol. I loved it though and loved the dancing in it. I bought the books to read too.
I tried to watch it! It was too fake. But maybe I’ll try again.
@@mahoganydrive I agree. I couldn’t watch it. Too much drama. But what I saw of the dancing was beautiful. I can’t imagine Katie would like it but her commentary would sure be entertaining!
Did not like Tiny Pretty Things. Thought it over exaggerated as to the brutality and personalities.
HAHA OKAYYY, me in the picture with arch
You're awesome :)
I watched pretty much the entire thing in two days, I loved it so much. I started ballet a few months ago (as an adult) and it has been really tough being a beginner during lockdowns since I've only been to the studio six times but their determination, at the end of the series inspired me to keep on pushing
Thank you for the inspiration, I also want to start ballet but was unsure because I am an adult
All the students are amazing but my heart absolutely melted for the younger kids. Kai and Brandon were so so sweet!
As soon as this came out, literally my first thought was, “I can’t wait to hear Katie’s thoughts on this series!” ❤️
Yes!! I absolutely LOVED On Pointe. Thank you for your incredible content, always! 💕 🩰
My pleasure!
i go to sab and i was in the series a little (i didnt like speak or anything but i was in some clips) in the last episode they show the poli dance and im in it! so cool that u watched it
I love that shirt (and lip) color on you... really looks lovely with your hair and complexion. 😊
Thank you!
@@kathryn_morgan Please, what is the lip color you’re wearing? It’s so lovely.
I have to say that I was disturbed by Sam’s injury. The fact that he was coming back from an injury and than got re-injured made me upset with teachers and his physical therapist. I could feel his pain sitting on the side. Especially after being recently promoted to Advanced Level.
Overall the series was enjoyable. I’m glad Disney+ produced the series, I think anywhere else it would have been hard to stomach.
Ms. Morgan thank you so much for your insight and all your Beautiful dancing. I will say I had the pleasure and honor to see you dance over the years. Seeing you and others dance and loving ballet led me to start a ballet scholarship almost twenty years ago. Thank you so much !!❤️🙏
Now... I loved the video, I didn't know that this was on, on Disney+
BUT GUUUUUURL, YOU'RE SERVING TODAAAAYYYYYYY!
LOOOOOOOVED that red lipstick, red fits you SO WELL!
You look happy, you look healthy. Believe when I say you've done so much for me, when I don't know what to do, your humor and your wisdom have been a guide through ballet and through life. Girl you deserve all the good stuff that is happening in your life and I'm happy to see you happy. Waiting for K-Mo and friends. More health, more love, more blessings this 2021, YOU GO GURL!
Thank you so much! I truly appreciate it!
I thought the kids spoke sooo articulately ... what bright kids😌🌻
I thought it was so adorable how mature and articulate these kids were.
This show was so well done. I felt like I was one of those kids every episode and was so emotional. I think I cried tears of joy every time. Though I’ve never danced at that level I know what it’s like to want and love something so badly. Thank you for reviewing this Kathryn. I was wondering how accurate it was.
I’m not even a dancer but I enjoyed watching the series!😍
I watched this show in one evening with two of my roommates who know nothing about ballet and we all loved it. It made me excited to get back in the studio again!
I finished it and it's so inspiring! Finally a dancer reviews this show.
I just finished it yesterday and I was so so good💕✨
Same. My fav series!
You should watch a German series about a ballet student called “Anna.” It’s a 6-part Christmas series, and it’s hugely popular in the German-speaking community.
Is it available on Netflix or Amazon prime? I love watching every dance series.
@@tammystiletto its on YT in a poor quality, and I think it’s also on prime
ruclips.net/video/utz0q1MtrqE/видео.html
@@tammystiletto or youtube? I speak German and try to keep it up watching films etc
I loved it but my heart was breaking for those advanced students talking about apprenticeships and showcases that we knew were going to be cancelled. 💔 Those kids worked so hard just for COVID to mess it up
Same :-(
Ditto!!! I found it somewhat ironic that I started watching On Pointe because I was a couch potato after getting my Covid vaccine (I don’t do ANY sort of needle well, so it could have just as easily been a tetanus shot, flu vaccine or routine blood test that caused me to be a couch potato).
Ruby is now a corps member and went back to performing in fall 2021!
Yay, I was hoping you would talk about this show!! Binged this over the weekend.
I love your honesty and passion!
Thank you!
You inspire me everyday! I want to be just like you!
Aww thank you!
You're very welcome! You are a role model and a wonderful soul. A light at the end of a dark tunnel.
I loved the series and wondered if you had watched it and was interested in your perspective! Thank you for sharing! I must say, Dena was my absolute highlight of the series. She’s truly a legend (like you said)... She’s obviously meant to do exactly what she’s doing... so poised, in control, lovely, and clearly admired/respected by her students. Fabulous series. P.s. - You look lovely! That deep red is your color!
I love hearing this from you. that show is what got me back into ballet and ironically enough into your youtube classes. I took ballet from age 10-19 but with college and working it became too hard and I sadly couldn't keep it up with it anymore. Now I am 32 and have taken a class here and there over the past decade, but otherwise can barely touch my toes anymore lol. After watching this series TWICE because I loved it so much and I called my mom and asked if I could have my ballet barre at my apartment. I figured who needs a dining room table when they live alone in a pandemic. So my new dining room is now a ballet room and the first class I found was yours :) I've been watching your videos every day and I love it so much. I hope that I get strong enough to get back on pointe eventually. So ironic that the person whose youtube classes I started to take was someone that also went to SAB which was the show about the same school is what led me back :) full circle moment here! I hope you keep making videos :D
I never went to a dance school like this. I did audition for the royal ballet school but didn’t get in 😔. I just love watching what happens in these dance schools. It’s so fascinating
I enjoyed it so much! I feel so bad for those older kids who were working for apprentice spots right before COVID hit. What an incredibly tough time to be starting your dream career and trying to prove yourself to the company! Those kids have some serious grit and perseverance! I want to see more! I hope they make more of these episodes once things are back to somewhat normal! I used to love watching those City Ballet videos about the school and company too!
Right?! When listening to those older students talk about spring show and the future apprenticeships, knowing those weren't going to happen was just heartbreaking
Ruby and Dominika are now in the corps!
What struck me most was the potential impact of COVID on these young dancers' careers, because a long interruption in training could be disastrous. It was heartbreaking seeing the excitement of the new NYCB apprentices - not knowing they won't be onstage at all next season.
Even my husband who knows almost nothing about ballet or dance loved it. That really shows just how special and moving ballet is.
I really enjoyed it and it definitely seemed real and not dramatized, glad to know it wasn’t. What a trip for you to see people you worked with and know so well!
Loved the docuseries too!!! ❤️❤️ Can you please also do a reaction video to tiny pretty things on Netflix?
Haven't watched it yet, but we are planning to at some point!
I do agree with that ^^
but would STILL love to hear your thoughts around ballet portrayed in modern/ mainstream media. There are just so few shows about dance/ballet. Tiler Peck makes an appearance in one of the episodes, so what do you think about dancers crossing over to these types of dramatized versions of ballet/dance?
Perfect timing! I was wondering if I should watch the series 🙈.
Yes you should! It’s sooo good!!!
I ve just started the series. I like that they re working so hard to be more inclusive on both a class and racial level. Going out to schools rather than only taking summer intensive students or students that can go to them is amazing.
Thanks for doing this, love the inside take on it. I binged it over 2 days I loved it!! Was a shame they had to end it early. Megan interviewed Dena and I recommend it to everyone, she added a lot of additional info about it. What made it even more fun was that NYCB’s streamed Nutcracker on Marquee was from 2019 and when On Pointe was filmed. So I had a blast looking for the featured kids in the documentary and rooting for them, and also the one who got her apprenticeship, you could pick her out if you looked. And thank you Disney for focusing on them as the high performance athletes they are! 🙌🏻😍❤️❤️
In the series, we see many of the students volunteer to do various things like monitor the children’s auditions or TA some of the children’s classes. Are those strictly volunteer or are they selected to do those jobs? Also, since you lived not in the dorms, I’m assuming most of the people who do it are those living in residence?
Yay I was hoping you would do a video like this!! I really liked the show.
So glad to hear this! I danced with a small company, but mostly had experience with UNCSA (and am from the town where it is), and I would say watching it was very accurate. I had many friends from UNCSA who went to SAB.
Anyway so happy to hear your thoughts! 💗💗💗
Kathryn, I wanted to thank you deeply, I have been doing one of your videos almost daily in the past few months, and they have helped me and kept me going through these difficult and unstable times. Thank you very much, your videos really do mean a lot to me.
Watched all six episodes this afternoon before coming back to see what you thought. Loved it! The way their year ended had me crying.
I'm so excited to get my pass for the new commentary service you are going to start!! 😊 #KMAF
Thank you!
I LOVE On Pointe!!! It’s captivating and so well done!
I'm now very curious about this show, thanks for sharing your thoughts!
Her eyes look amazing with red! Isn’t that weird? Wonderful color contrast!
Loved the students on the series! Hope they all continue to dance one way or another.
I loved it. Broke my heart knowing it didn’t happen this year.
KATIE! PLEASE PLEASE DO ANOTHER SAB Q&A!
Hey, Kathryn! You mentioned how the dancers don't rehearse with the orchestra until the dress/day before performance. In your experience, is the transition from piano to orchestra a little strange for the dancers? Does the conductor sit with you guys during rehearsals with piano to help the transition?
Yes- the conductors always come to rehearsals, which helps a LOT. However it is often very strange when you first dance to the orchestra. Especially if you are not that familiar with the score. We relied on counts a lot of the time!
Thankyou for your take on this series. I have to admit it bothered me when 9 or 10 year old kids talked about how stressful things were. Kids that age shouldn't be that stressed- they shouldn't know what that means! I would love to see your reaction to the Aussie series Dance Academy some time.
i’m so glad it’s accurate! i’ve always been interested in the subject of professional ballet schools and what it was like.
i’ve always been interested in ballet and my goal is to be on point by the time i’m 25 at the latest (i’m currently 17 😂). i’ve been in and out of ballet classes my entire life and i really enjoy the art and the skill it takes. thank you for spreading the passion and the encouragement to keep me going to me goal ❤️
Love hearing your thoughts on this, thanks Katie!
I love hearing your input on this! I’m debating watching it, as I had a lot of childhood trauma from my experience as a child ballet dancer with a big company in another state. I’m worried even though it seems to be very positive & not as “reality show” produced (which I’m really glad to hear!), I still may get triggered and taken back to bad memories of a similar time & experience in my life. But hearing your thoughts as someone who lived pretty much this exact situation is really fantastic, so I really appreciate this ❤️
@Rosa Dalton thank you :) I’m at a much better place years later now, I have a degree in vocal music and perform as a professional actress (well during non-covid times at least lol)! slowly but surely trying to get back into dance bc I still love it despite everything’s that happened, I just have to take it slow & safe on my own time ❤️
Remember you can always stop watching! Make sure to take care of yourself. So glad you’re in a better space
kathryn- this was such a fun video! this is kind of like a once upon a pointe!!
That was my first thought too! These children are all amazing and so so smart!!!
I really love these videos, glad to see you're looking healthy
I binged the series of On Pointe. I loved it.
Less than a minute into your video but I have to stop and agree with the comment about how articulate the students were. I've always said that you can spot a dancer as soon as they open their mouth. The vast majority of dancers I've known (Danced at a pre-professional school for over a decade so I've met a lot!) are intelligent, poised, well-spoken... On Pointe absolutely FLOORED me in that regard.
Isn't the school much more racially diverse than it used to be? Especially when it comes to WOMEN students of color? I know NYCB has had black males, but black women have traditionally been rare.
Yes you are completely correct women of color being rare. It seems ad though the school is really focused on adding diversity.
You look so chiselled in the face now - hope you are okay and not overworked - much love and many thanks for your years of video fabulousness xx
I loved on pointe! I'm so glad you loved and reacted to it!
I've watched 4 of the 7 episodes so far and I love it! I wish it was a longer series! Thank you for sharing your feedback about it. It makes me love the show so much more now that someone who's been through SAB and NYCB has approved it!
I believe it was going to be longer but Covid got in the way!
@@kathryn_morgan aww that stinks! COVID is so annoying! The show is so great my ballet friends and I love it
Loved the series and after hearing your insight, I want to rewatch it!
Yes! As soon as I saw the On Pointe series on Disney+ , I was really hoping you'd do a reaction video :)
I haven’t even watched the video yet and I’m so happy....... I’ve been wanting something like this for a while😊😂
I have a question! Did you cry at all while watching? At what part? I definitely shed a few tears
Ooh! I was so excited to see this! I need this education for writing purposes! And I LOVE YOUR LIPSTICK! MY GOSH, YOU ARE SO PRETTY!!!
Brandon was amazing!!!!! I just loved him!!!!
Soooo sad that they removed it! You can't watch it anywhere else. I'm crying rn
Yay! new video!
Thank you very much and good luck 💖
OH MY GOSH, I loved this, please do some more reacts! Like in movies, to black swan, etc!
Loved it !!!! I as in awe of the Who le nutcracker production . Fabulous !
Nice to hear your opinion ! Thanks 🙏🏻
I watched it all day on the day it came out!
I would love to see you review/react to centerstage if you haven’t, it would be so funny!
I loved On Pointe and was hoping you'd review it! I kept thinking about you while I was watching and thinking, "Oh wow I bet she went through these things too!"
Even though I’m not even close to being a professional ballet dancer, at my studio the first nutcracker rehearsals of all the scenes are complete chaos.
What a life you are having! 🙏🏾❤️👏🏾👏🏾🙏🏾
I can’t wait to come to CA and take your classes!!
I was watching that series and I saw that one of my prior classmates is on the show! And I was like wow look at him in that banana suit 😂
First for once in my life! This vid's going to be really interesting !💜
Edit: No I'm not first. Just refresh 😂😂
I love the show on Disney I was worry that it wouldn’t be accurate but I am glad that you made this video about it makes me know that there is still great people out there.
I'm excited to watch it! "On Pointe" makes me cringe a little though haha.
Me too. I'm like, "I get WHY the show decided to write it that way...but I hate it" haha
I love it! "En Pointe" wouldn't have made sense to an American audience who doesn't know French or French pronunciations generally. On Pointe is a happy medium - a cross between the reference to these kids needing to be "on point" in order to fulfill their dreams, and the reference to the dancers being "en pointe". It's a perfect title.
@@livetodance30 Thanks for explaining it, I haven’t watched the show yet so I didn’t understand the double meaning. You’re right! It’s a great title!
@Eva Yeah haha.
@@evelyncollins7 It's a pun, and an almost cliché one at that; much like the show Breaking Pointe.
This was so fun!!!! Thank you Katie 🥰
Love your videos! Please do more ballet classes videos! They are great ❤️❤️❤️
I started watching this last week and I was wondering what you thought about it and if it was accurate. Excited to finish it now that I know that it is! Also I completely relate to what you were saying about realizing that you're not the young one anymore. I am 39 now and I keep getting that feeling quite a bit in my everyday life haha
I was glad for the innocence focus on the day in a life of a dancer athlete, as opposed to tiny pretty things which was great and intriguing but I could never share that with my mom or half of my younger friends that train with every day 💁🏼♀️ I don’t think you need drama to sell a show. You just need to show the human condition. That can be intriguing enough 🙌🏻
I thought it was interesting that they made the school look very diverse. When you visit NYCB, you do not see that on stage nearly as much as this series portrayed. Was that fake for the show, or is the company trying to slowly evolve by having a more diverse school?
The new administration has taken diversity very seriously in the last couple of years. They have hired several dancers of color in the last year, but of course everything starts at the school. It will take time, but they are making an effort.
I’m glad you commented on the series. I enjoyed it very much and the closest I’ve ever gotten to dancing was sitting in the audience.
My Bestfriend is Taela Graff in the documenary
I love this. Now I want to watch the series because Katie endorsed it. Whatever Katie endorses, I want to try. We love you Katie!!!
Omg I remember when Henry dressed up as mr Hendrickson for Halloween 😅
I feel so old seeing all the new faculty. I remember when I was younger y'all were just starting within companies and it's amazing.
When things open up, I want to see The Nutcracker! Also, I think a few of the adult students were featured in The New York City Ballet Workout Book so that was quite a thrill for me, LOL!
