basically, take out the specific ballet terminology and replace it with any other, and you get a universal "how to make it in the world" video :) good advice, as ever! I always look forward to your videos!
Sameee.... I tore a muscle while stretching and lost all the flexibility in my right leg because it took two months to heal... I still have my splits but they hurt quite a bit and require a lot of stretching before doing them :( plus it hurts to do a lot of things in ballet classes now that im not so flexible
NEVER DROP STRAIGHT INTO SPLITS WITH COLD MUSCLES that is the worst thing you can do. This is why you over stretch or strain muscles. Before you start make sure your muscles are warm by doing active stretches like lunges or such you can look up more stretches online or ask your teacher, but usually, like the stretches in a jazz class are pretty good so like running, chasses, ACTIVE STRETCHES ARE KEY
Personally I think being pushed while stretching is ok but only if you do it safely. My coach pushes me when I'm stretching and it made me more flexible so
I have nothing to do with ballet, so I have not experienced any of this. I just find it fascinating. Nevertheless, I LOVED the way you expressed this; especially the one about confidence and health. I really believe it will help a lot of young dancers. Love your channel!
Could you do a mini-series on your pre-stage routine? Like a playlist of your warm-up routine, your hair routine, your pointe shoes/tights rituals, costume tips, tips for stage fright, that sort of thing. I know you did the makeup but I'd really love to see the other things you do.
Ariel Burrow even if you started late, if you have any intention of trying to make it into a company, these will help tremendously!! She is totally correct in saying that work ethic and love of what you're doing and need to succeed really are what get you there 👍🏻
It does not necessarily targets people who have been dancing since they were young. Anyone, even those in your age, can apply all those tips and eventually be a professional dancer! Sacrifice, determination, and passion are important! 💜
Keep on top of your mental health too, guys! Be safe and healthy - I had to realise that my (very Russian :D) teacher wasn't correct about being as thin as humanly possible. And I made it into a company, I joined the corps this year :)
So many jewels of wisdom here. Not on a professional track, but I still found these so relevant to making sure I'm reaching for my full potential as a dancer. Loved it. Thank you x 100!!
Katie, my favorite thing about your videos is that I actually find myself applying your advice to my own studies (self-motivation, dealing with criticism, efficiency etc.), and I'm a Classics major (Latin and ancient Greek!) - nothing in the world to do with ballet, except that I love it and enjoy learning about it. :D
I'm not a dancer, but I like watching your videos because they give me great insight about the ballet world and what goes behind a performance. I have a huge respect towards dancers!
I'm a new grad physical therapist from Ireland and I love your videos, they've taught me so much! Your classes have inspired me when prescribing exercises to patients; ballet requires more control over body movement than any other art form or sport! Unfortunately I was only able to do ballet for about two years before my teacher quit and there were no other classes that I could make it to - I miss it terribly, but hope to go back to it as an adult soon!
Nanna Vendelbo Look at yourself in the mirror, check your form against the others. Say to your teacher 'I feel I'm off with [insert exercise here], how do I look to you?' Otherwise, if you have friends in the class spot each other.
Nanna Vendelbo does your teacher give general corrections to the whole class? Chances are these will apply to you too. If the teacher gives another student a correction, take that as a learning opportunity and make sure you work on that too
I started dance at 16, I’m now a sophomore in college and fully realizing it’s my passion and I can’t live without it. I am not looking to be a professional dancer but I am looking to complete a masters in dance to teach!
I thought myself ballet with the age of 13. I always wanted to be a professional dancer. I'm now 14 and I dance the same level as other teens my age. Everything is possible you just have to want it^^ (and of course work hard too:))
I'm 13 and I'm starting on wednsday! i took ballet when I was really little and I lost most of my knowledge, any tips? also are you still doing ballet?
While I am not a dancer, and can never relate to the life of a full time or professional athlete, I've learned the hard way that pain, even just an ache, is always your body talking to you. I've had a joint issue from birth, and learning to listen to my body has been a hard lesson. I love hearing Katie teach younger athletes to take care of themselves first, it's so important!
I never did ballet. I just watched this video out of curiosity since i have a child in pre ballet (I enrolled her because I noticed she liked to twirl around to music). Believe me when I say your advice is applicable and helpful for all careers outside of ballet! Even if my child never pursued a professional dance career, I feel the things she would learn in ballet lessons will serve her well in her life.
Watching your videos is making me want to join an adult beginner ballet class. I always had dreams of dancing and had given up on it. I love you Kathryn!
I would say your tips are working also for 'normal' professions. I like the suggestions you are giving. They are so true. Most of them are applicable also to other jobs you could have. So thumbs up for your advices and tips. Thanks.
Wow, that was one of the best videos!!! This tips will really really help me and so many others dancers. I think that "Confidence" is the most difficult for me. But I'll work on it. Love your channel!
I'm 15 and started ballet a few weeks ago, after dancing classical Chinese dance (my grandma is Chinese) for about 6 months. I'm getting on pointe next week. My teacher is advancing me really quickly and I feel like I am terrible! I even got chasse wrong today:( I cry in ballet a lot... but I love it. Do you think I could still become a professional ballet dancer even though I have a really late start?
Just remember..... EVERYTHING IS POSSIBLE..... You may need to work even harder than everyone else, but I think that if you're born to be a professional dancer, you'll become a professional dancer....... And about crying. That's completely normal....I'm 17 and I sometimes cry in the class, too.... what's too much, it's too much ....I think that everyone have these "days", and if not at class, than at home, trust me....... I wish you a good luck and a ton of health and passion in dancing....If you really want it, just trust yourself and DO IT......... (Love from a colleague)
She shouldn't be getting you on pointe after a few weeks! That's really dangerous! Two years minimum of dancing before pointe is good, not that short amount of time. For my studio it's actually 4 years minimum.
@@IATEALLTHECHEESE she did traditional Chinese dance before, for what I know, traditional Chinese dance is quite similar to ballet dance despite not on pointe shoe, so she is not new new, just for ballet is new.
even though im just a teeny tiny ballet beginner and most of your videos arent relevant to me i still think they're so interesting and well done and they calm me down... your channel is one of my happy places on youtube, tysm
Could do do a video geared more towards people who wanna teach or have their own studio or company? Like how to plan lessons and make barre and center combinations?
Isabella Sacca right?!?! That's kind of the weird stuff you don't learn when taking classes but would be super helpful for dancers who wanna teach haha
So helpful! I worked for Disney as an entertainer/ dancer but I never worked in a ballet company. I completely agree with you about all of these things and I am gluten-free because I noticed it was hurting my career.
Great tips! I completely agree especially with the pointe work aspect, when I transitioned into the professional world I was overwhelmed by the pointe work and it took awhile to get comfortable wearing them all the time. I definitely recommend taking class in pointe shoes as often as you can once you are an advanced dancer looking to find work.
So true...thank you so much for your real talk while staying positive (and hilarious and humble). I'm an adult dancer but I see a lot of the negativity that surrounds the pre-professional and professional world. I absolutely love your videos and I hope you keep making them! I would appreciate any additional tips you have specifically for dancers who started as adults - I am luckily very flexible but have issues with turn out for instance.
I’m not a dancer whatsoever. I know very little about ballet. But I love your videos. They’re fascinating to hear about this world from the outside looking in and videos like this one can relate to just about anything in life.
Im a dancer from Australia and I’m 13 years old, it has been my dream to become a professional dancer for as long as I can remember it truely would make my world. Recently I realised that my dream wasn’t going to happen unless I really worked for it. I currently go to dance school that teaches in lots of styles and doesn’t prioritise ballet which I want to pursue.the training isn’t enough to get em to a professional level but it breaks my heart to leave because the girls are my family and I’ve danced there since i was two. But regardless I’ve realised that I have to make sacrifices my overall abilities isn’t any wear near enough to be able to get into the Australian ballet ( does all of Australia’s ballet proformances and is considered the highest of ballet achievements in aus) so I’m instead trying out for the Melbourne school of classical dance there an amazing schooo that prioritises ballet, I’m going in for a class and then they will let me know wether I’m able to join. They have a pre professional programme but at this stage I’m not skilled enough to even have a chance of getting into it. My plan is to try out for there standard programe and do it for a year or so untill I feel confident trying for the pre professional one. After 2 or so years of that I want to audition for the Australian ballet after receiving that good training. By then I’ll be 16-18 so I don’t know if it’s to late. The pre professional programme at the Melbourne school of classical ballet requires you to be homeschooled and I don’t know if my parents would allow me to become homeschooled for dance. Since I’m not amazing at the moment I don’t think my mum takes my passion for dance seriously and I feel as though she doesn’t have any faith in me. I’m worried that I won’t even get into the standers program, I’m worried that it will be to late for me by the time I try out for the Australian ballet I’m worried I want get into the pre professional programme I’m worried I won’t get into the Australian ballet and I’m worried that my mum won’t let me become home schooled for dance. I know this is long but if you have any advice I would really appreciate it.
I started ballet when I was five. I started performing at about age 16, made a professional career in ballet and other dance (tap, jazz, kick/chorus line) at age twenty, and retired by age thirty-five from performing ballet. I still do ballet but for exercise/practice. Your list rings true!
Such great tips. I feel like I’m still a Teacher’s Pet! It really helps to have solid preparation from a young age. Little things like callouses on feet matter. Who can smile through bone searing pain. You think I’m kidding? We faced the wall when we first started on pointe. That gave a false illusion that it doesn’t really hurt. Put one hand on the bar and start doing a simple tendu then go progress to pull ups..,I’m listening but as someone who trained to be pro, wanted to be pro, made it to the highest level preprofressional in her state by dancing with multiple companies, attending a visual performing arts school at Governor Thomas Johnson in Maryland, and being selected for the Maryland Gifted and Talented Arts program yet still wasn’t selected professionally? Well YOU HAVE TO FIGURE OUT WHAT PEOPLE WANT. You have that knack Katie. You’re a pretty dancer, yes. But you give what people want. I agree with your entire list. Unfortunately for me while I saw myself as an athlete, trained so, I still had curves and that is what wasn’t wanted back in the nineties. Not curves like fat; curves that showed I was still menstruating.
Hi Katie, what is your opinion of Capezio's new arch trainer "shoe"? Also, could you do a video about your favorite jazz/lyrical/ballet shoes? Which are your favorites for all around dancing/technique? Like, if you could dance in whatever shoes you wanted, what shoe would you choose the majority of the time? Which ones are best for turning? Leaping? Etc. Thanks! Love your videos!

Thank you so much for this Katie!! Thanks for being honest too! I really want to be a professional ballet dance( with the San Fransisco Ballet Company) but I was starting to feel like I can't do it since I started kinda late. You completely changed my mind. Now I feel like I can do it and more! Thanks!!!
I'm twelve and I have ballet class 3 days a week: Mondays from 4:30-6:45, Friday from 6: 45 to 8:30 and all day Saturdays. Each day has multiple classes and I also take dance during school 3 days a week (One period: 45 minutes of stretching and all that jazz) would I still be able to become professional when I get more training once I am a bit older? By the way, I love your channel your videos are so entertaining and helpful!
Erin McCarthy I’m sure you can if I were you try to get classes in the middle of the week, it doesn’t have to be your level, me personally, I started a little later, so I do a lower level class on pointe and that has helped
Thanks for the video Kathryn, I don't have a desire to be a professional dancer (that ship has sailed!) but I was surprised to see how many of these tips apply to finding success in any area. Young people really need to learn the work ethic and outlook you talk about in this video. Thanks so much for sharing.
Kathryn, I loved this video so much! I live in Mexico and have been dancing (comfortably) for 10 years now in a small local and tradition company (yes, a loooot of up and downs). I agree 100% with everything you recommend in this video. You said things I knew but could never put into words as well as you did. I'll show your video to some fellow dancers, everybody can get some use out of it. THANK YOU! xoxo
I just wanna say that you are helping me so much with all your advices ! i try to put them in my class bc i feel really inspired by you it´s really hard for me to trying to be a dancer but i love ballet so much thanks!!!!!
You are such an inspiration! I'm not even a dancer, but I can totally relate to most of your advices. I gave up a regular job with a moderately well paid salary in order to become a freelance translator, and sometimes it can be very hard. But then I ask myself why did I make that decision, what is there in my current lifestyle that looked so appealing back then, and every time I find that it totally pays off. You need self esteem, to be able to self motivate and to be willing to work hard. I know this has nothing to do with dancing, but I guess some values are universal. I really enjoy watching your videos. :-) (Sorry for my English. I'm Portuguese.)
Thanks a million for posting this video! I'm going to show this to my dad in the hopes of convincing him to let me do five days a week (a total of 9 and a half hours) of ballet so that I could go for a professional career. The school I want to go to this year is much better than the one I was in before. You, with your stories and videos, helped me to raise my voice and state loud and clear that I want to do ballet. Thank you so much, Kathryn ❤❤❤
I really learned so much from you! I am only on pointe for half a year and I really really learned veeeery much from the videos you make. My teacher also asked from where I know the things I teach myself. Thank you do much!!
I am still very young and I haven’t started in a real ballet school yet because I’m under 14.. But I am practicing for the future, I have 1 ballet class in a week but I stretch everyday to become the perfect ballet dancer in the future! 💕💕
Omg! I could just now watch this video sadly because of school. And love it!!! I didn't get to know that before I hit the like button though because I tapped it at 0:04 lol . This is great note to leave off on before I'm off to ballet, thank you Katie. Hopefully this becomes one of your 300K view videos :).
A performance warm up would be amazingly helpful. I'm always a little unsure of how to warm up without getting fatigued and when to go down to the stage to warm up in good time
Seriously... I am biology major student but sometimes I feel that my brain's burning out even more than when I am dealing with my anatomy or chemistry classes while I am dancing. I totally understand what you said about #7 BE SMART. My teacher who taught me how to stand in right position and that gave me 'the world of difference'. Since then, I realized that it actually requires lots of intelligence, too.
i really want to attend 6 days a week ballet class, but in my country there is no ballet academy that have a programme like that, and we only had 2 classes a week😭I have only started at 14 and i dont know what to do cause my parents dont really have the money to give me more ballet classes😢
A warm-up routine to do before performances would be so helpful!
sayura I'd like to see this as well.
I will do that! xoxo
Can you do a post class/performance cool down?!?!? Thanks!
sayura yeah! That’s a good idea, I’d like to see that too!
basically, take out the specific ballet terminology and replace it with any other, and you get a universal "how to make it in the world" video :)
good advice, as ever! I always look forward to your videos!
Thank you!
Can you do a video how to stay safe while stretching? Covering things like over splits, pushing to hard, using other people etc. Xx 😘
Lisa I've overstretched my muscles several times so far, so yeah, that would be really helpful.
YESSS me too
I have nothing to do with ballet, so I have not experienced any of this. I just find it fascinating.
Nevertheless, I LOVED the way you expressed this; especially the one about confidence and health. I really believe it will help a lot of young dancers.
Love your channel!
Thank you SO much Nadia! I truly appreciate it!
Could you do a mini-series on your pre-stage routine? Like a playlist of your warm-up routine, your hair routine, your pointe shoes/tights rituals, costume tips, tips for stage fright, that sort of thing. I know you did the makeup but I'd really love to see the other things you do.
Hannah Evans yessssss miniseries!!!! Would be awesome Kathryn!!!!!!
OOOH I like that idea! Thank you! I will add it to the list!
A lot of these seem to be targeted at people who have been dancing since they were a kid. Can you do one for people like me who started at like 13/14
Ariel Burrow even if you started late, if you have any intention of trying to make it into a company, these will help tremendously!! She is totally correct in saying that work ethic and love of what you're doing and need to succeed really are what get you there 👍🏻

No it isn’t...
OMG yes!!! I noticed that too!! It would be great if she made one fo people who just started
This video was very helpful even though I felt like it was not for people who just started
Keep on top of your mental health too, guys! Be safe and healthy - I had to realise that my (very Russian :D) teacher wasn't correct about being as thin as humanly possible. And I made it into a company, I joined the corps this year :)
I know this is late, but congratulations!!!
Your makeup is looking stunning, really suits you!!! Love watching your videos
Thank you so much!
So many jewels of wisdom here. Not on a professional track, but I still found these so relevant to making sure I'm reaching for my full potential as a dancer. Loved it. Thank you x 100!!
Thank you so much!
I'm a 61 year old woman who has never danced in her life but I love watching your videos. You're enjoyable to watch!
Pleeeeeease do a before performance warm up videooo
You are awesome for one more time and you somehow motivate me in a crazy way 💜💜💜💜
Thank you! And I will! xoxo
I love Kathryn Morgan
Thank you!

Ask her after class!

Thank you for posting this. My 3 year old (4 on the 29th) is in love with Ballet currently :)
Awww that's great! And my pleasure!
Thanks Katie! So many great tips here, this video is bookmarked for whenever I forget where my track is.
Yes on performance warmup. I need that!
Wow, that was one of the best videos!!! This tips will really really help me and so many others dancers. I think that "Confidence" is the most difficult for me. But I'll work on it. Love your channel!
A pre-performance warm up would be really great! Thanks!

So helpful! I worked for Disney as an entertainer/ dancer but I never worked in a ballet company. I completely agree with you about all of these things and I am gluten-free because I noticed it was hurting my career.
it's so amazing that you were the dewdrop in NYC nutcracker! my sister's ballet school is doing a performance and she's the dewdrop. so excited!!!

Thank you Grace!
This video really motivated me and made me think. I want to get to being a professional someday, but now I know that these things are key to being one
Kathryn, thank you! This video has the most realistic and sensible advice for aspiring dancers I've seen!
Please do a pre performance warm up!!
I really appreciate this video Kathryn it was very helpful ❤️❤️❤️
Hi Katie, what is your opinion of Capezio's new arch trainer "shoe"? Also, could you do a video about your favorite jazz/lyrical/ballet shoes? Which are your favorites for all around dancing/technique? Like, if you could dance in whatever shoes you wanted, what shoe would you choose the majority of the time? Which ones are best for turning? Leaping? Etc. Thanks! Love your videos!
Put one hand on the bar and start doing a simple tendu then go progress to pull ups..,
Performance barre warmup sounds really great!
Thanks so much for publishing this, it really encouraged me! PLEASE do make the pre-performance video!
Yes please for the performance bar video!!
Thank you so much for this Katie!! Thanks for being honest too! I really want to be a professional ballet dance( with the San Fransisco Ballet Company) but I was starting to feel like I can't do it since I started kinda late. You completely changed my mind. Now I feel like I can do it and more! Thanks!!!
You always post the right videos at the right time 😂❤
I just spent 15 minutes staring at how pretty you are! Love your makeup you're so gorgeous
this really helped! im 13 right now and i’m hoping for in the future i can dance at san diego ballet! ♥️
I watch you Friday night, so I can have that motivation for Saturday 8am ballet. I love your videos!
A performance warm up would be great! thank you so much Kathryn for another amazing and helpful video!!!
Wise and wonderful, as ever Katie.
Such wise advice from someone who has been there. EVERY young dancer with hopes to become a professional should be listening!
Yes please! A pre performance warm up video!
THANK YOU! xoxo
Very important video. As an older man who gas been around, this is excellent advice for whatever you do. Ladies - listen to every word!
I just wanna say that you are helping me so much with all your advices ! i try to put them in my class bc i feel really inspired by you it´s really hard for me to trying to be a dancer but i love ballet so much thanks!!!!!
definitely do the performance warm up!!!
Now I know what I have to do better and what is wrong. You helped me so much! Thank you!
Hi Kathryn i'm absolutely obsessed with your Ballet commentary videos are there any more you have because they are my favourite!!! xoxo
Thank you Olivia! Oh yes- I have a lot more I can do! So stay tuned! xoxo
Excellent, reallstoc advice.
Thank you for sharing that with me Isabel! I am so glad I have helped you! That means a lot to me. Much love!
Yes please!! A warm up video would be great, thanks! 🤗
I really learned so much from you! I am only on pointe for half a year and I really really learned veeeery much from the videos you make. My teacher also asked from where I know the things I teach myself.
Thank you do much!!
Yes please please do a before performance warm-up
I am still very young and I haven’t started in a real ballet school yet because I’m under 14.. But I am practicing for the future, I have 1 ballet class in a week but I stretch everyday to become the perfect ballet dancer in the future! 💕💕
Great video! Self motivation is so important as a professional dancer!
this is so helpful thankyou so much xxx
I love the tiaras just casually hanging on the barre...not surprising at all since Katie is a princess!
Omg! I could just now watch this video sadly because of school. And love it!!! I didn't get to know that before I hit the like button though because I tapped it at 0:04 lol . This is great note to leave off on before I'm off to ballet, thank you Katie. Hopefully this becomes one of your 300K view videos :).
Thank you! xoxo
thank you so much Kathryn, this was so helpful, you are always so inspiring!!!
Kathryn please relabel this video to “10 secrets to becoming good at anything” this is great advice that applies to so many areas of life :)
As always your video is really helpful! Thank you Kathryn 💕
Thank you!
I love this video! What you spoke about was so important and you are so inspirational xx
I would love a video on self motivation Katiexxx
Very well thought out as well as expressed.... Ballet calls you
Best video you've uploaded Katie! Xx
before performance warm-up would be awesome!
A performance warm up would be amazingly helpful. I'm always a little unsure of how to warm up without getting fatigued and when to go down to the stage to warm up in good time
i am not trying to be a professional dancer but all these tips are so great for just getting awesome!! I love this channel
This is superrrrrrrr helpful! I love these videos so much!
Can you do a video on how to get noticed in ballet and how to stand out in a group 😊love ur videos
Smile
Pre performance warmup would be amazing!!!
You are amazing Kathryn!😁
Seriously... I am biology major student but sometimes I feel that my brain's burning out even more than when I am dealing with my anatomy or chemistry classes while I am dancing. I totally understand what you said about #7 BE SMART. My teacher who taught me how to stand in right position and that gave me 'the world of difference'. Since then, I realized that it actually requires lots of intelligence, too.
This was so helpful because I'm auditioning for the PNB Summer Course and I'm super nervous. This really incouraged me to work harder.😊
Thank you so much! This is a really great and helpful video!!
Thank you so much! I will definitely follow this, and hopefully one day I'll make it as a professional dancer!
I love your videos so much and you are such a sweetie.
i really want to attend 6 days a week ballet class, but in my country there is no ballet academy that have a programme like that, and we only had 2 classes a week😭I have only started at 14 and i dont know what to do cause my parents dont really have the money to give me more ballet classes😢
Great wisdom!
